What do watermelons and the elderly have in common? Usually, not much. I learned this recently. I've been shopping for a sweet couple in their 80s, and one thing that they've told me is that they can't get watermelon anymore. And they miss it!
First of all, it is harder for them to pick up a heavy watermelon, so they don't. Second, there usually is not the option in stores near them that have already cut watermelon for them to buy.
I've solved this for them by buying a watermelon from which I share about 1/4 with them. They don't eat much anymore, so that is about all they can eat before it goes bad.
So just a small reminder: if you have elderly people in your circle, a nice thing to do is share your watermelon with them!
