All tragedies involve a noble hero with a fatal flaw

Including the tragedy of the Greatest Generation. C.S. Lewis understood that tragedy and foresaw it:
During World War II, Lewis realized that both the Allies and the Axis were abandoning the traditional morality of the Christian West and indeed of all sane civilizations. The great principle of this morality is that certain acts are intrinsically right or wrong. In a gigantic war among gigantic states, Lewis saw that modern science was being used amorally on all sides to dehumanize and annihilate enemies. When peace came, the victorious states would feel released from moral restraints.
There's a reason the Greatest Generation, having so nobly fought through so many challenges, also gave birth to and reared the most narcissistic generation in human history. We Boomers are the fruit of the fatal and tragic flaw in the Greatest Generation, living out that release from moral constraints and, in the process, laboring to implement much of the moral philosophy of the enemies of the Greatest Generation. We've successfully killed far more innocents than Hitler, while institutionalizing narcissism on a vast scale. Our parents wanted things to be better for us than they had it. In the country that used to be England, what they've gotten is ruins.

The Western Confucian remarks: "If this blasphemy against "the greatest generation" were more widely known, neo-cons would be removing Lewis from their libraries."

The Department of Education sends in the jackboots...

...and conducts police raids. But we're not coming to live in a national security state in which the citizenry is regarded as cattle or anything.

Initially, the story was that this door-smashing raid was about unpaid student loans. That looked particularly Soviet, so now the story has changed to a vague "ongoing criminal investigation". Big Brother is wise and just and if he decides to smash your door in and change the rationale for doing so to look better in the press, then your job is to believe him.

Today, my shuffling lackeys, I command you to be a creative genius who forever alters the face of music. Like this guy:

If you don't have something on my desk by noon, then report to Room 101 in Pits of Despair and tell the Pain Technicians I am very put out. They will know what to do. Discipline will continue until creativity improves.

That is all!

Prayer Request

A reader writes:
i am stuck in a situation that i do not think i will be able to get out of, and have been thinking very seriously about suicide for the last few days

please help
Father, hear our prayer for this precious one for whom Christ died. Grant this person hope, show them your love, and help them to grasp on to you in trust. Help them in whatever situation they are in to trust in you and find their way home to you. Mother Mary, pray for this person that they find the grace to choose life and hope. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Prayer Request

A reader writes:
Some one close to me fell out of a second story window yesterday and is in Harborview Hospital awaiting surgery. She crushed her foot and a couple vertebrae, but we don't really know her full situation till after the surgeons can get to work. She's unfortunately been waiting for some time, having arrived yesterday. She's groggy, but not groggy enough to not feel the pain, I'm afraid. :(
Father, hear our prayer for her complete healing in body, soul, and spirit through Christ our Lord. Mother Mary and St. Luke, pray for her, her caregivers, and all who love her.

Tepid Prolife Yak Yak

Memo to Rick Santorum: The Unborn Deserve Better From You

Catholic Lane takes a gutsy stand in the suffocating world of conservative Catholic politics and points out that our GOP hero is emitting "personally opposed" code while simultaneously sending the normal GOP subliminal signal that he wishes the issue would go away. Useful for rallying the base. But when meeting the press, he'd kinda like to just not talk about it too much cuz he doesn't want to stand *too* close to those prolife folk. How quickly people forget the name "Arlen Specter" and our hero's support of that pro-abort zealot. The main thing is to be a good party animal, vote for salvation through Leviathan, unjust wars, and torture. One of these days, when these everlasting projects are finished, the party might get around to doing more than yak tepidly. But till then prolifers should be grateful for the bones thrown them, shut up, and vote GOP.

It cracks me up. I vote *against* Obama and am told I am secretly an abortion supporter. Santorum zealously backs abortion supporter Arlen Specter, unjust war, and torture, and I am informed that in rejecting him--I secretly support abortion! American politics is positively Byzantine.
