The Demon’s in the Details

Yesterday marked another Book Birthday for this girl when I released The Demon King’s Destiny. It gave a most-welcome bump in my download numbers and I’d like to take a second to give a huge thank you to all the readers who have given this book and this series a chance. This has been one amazing ride.

As an author who was used to making $20 bucks a month or so on her RomComs and erotic romance (under another pen name), no one was more surprised than me by the steady increase in sales for my fantasy/paranormal series released under C.A. Worley. December and January were the best months evah! (For me, obviously). No, I’m not raking in five figures a month, but breaking the four-figure mark was an amazing feeling.

Sales declined a bit in February, as I expected them to when the first two books started to lose their new-book-shine. But then I noticed my preorders for Book 3 had increased by lots. Check it out:

I know it’s not record-breaking or best-selling-list worthy, but this was a huge deal for me as an indie author. I increased preorders five-fold each time. How did I do that? Not sure what exactly put me over, but I’d like to share some steps I took to help myself out.

I went wide with distribution: Amazon and Smashwords (which gets my books to places like Apple, B&N, etc.).
I made the books available for preorder over a month in advance (I’ve read mixed philosophies on this).
I gave away 700+ copies of Book 1 via Prolific Works and joined two giveways on the site.
I made Book 1 99 cents.
I made Book 2 and Book 3 99 cents during preorder and for a week after release.
I posted ARCs on BookSprout (you get 20 free ARC reviews via their network of readers–reviews are not guaranteed, but most of the readers posted for me).
I emailed ARCs to 25 readers who signed up via a Google Form I put on my social media.
I found an amazing cover artist on Fiverr.
I posted on my social media consistently and in several Facebook groups I joined (I try not to get spammy).
I joined an author group that does giveaways periodically and it increased my followers (especially on BookBub).
I linked my books on BookBub and an alert went out the day Book 3 was released to my 250+ BookBub followers (free of charge).
I used AskDavid.com to get tweets out to their followers (free and paid options–I usually use the free option, but joined for 1 year…$10 maybe?”
I hired Xpresso Book Tours to do a Book Blitz for Books 2 and 3. It got me onto 70+ blogs. Each time, I did a $25 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway.
I posted on sites that allow you to promo for free (not guaranteed they will accept your book): AwesomeGang.com, Pretty-Hot.com, etc. A list of them is here. Some of them are paid sites, but many don’t charge.

That’s it in a nutshell. A 14-step nutshell. Again, I’m not sure what the “magic formula” was. Probably the mix of everything. If I had to pick what was most important, I would have to say the genre I wrote might have a huge part in it. After that, the book covers and the Book Blitzes. Again, I don’t really know. So for each release after this, I’ll probably stick with what I’ve been doing.

If you’re an author, I’d love to know what’s worked for you. Happy reading and writing, y’all!

Release the Demon!

Woot-woot! The Demon King’s Destiny releases in four days! I’m excited to have it out there and to conclude the series … well, maybe Luka needs his story written, but I’ve got other irons in the fire I need to deal with first.

A huge thanks to all my readers who have already preordered. This is by far the most preorders I’ve ever had and I’m just so thankful people have given the books a chance. Trust me, no one’s more surprised than me. Ha!

In this third novel, I’m particularly fond of the middle sister, Evelyn. She’s my kind of girl and I think readers will relate. She’s the inspiration for my new heroine, Lyric, who is a badass and in a tough spot where she can’t fight her way out. Or can she? I’m only three chapters in, but I definitely got the idea from Evelyn’s life and how she handles herself. It’s a modern setting, so it won’t have the same fantasy feel as the Fate of Imperium Series. It’s still paranormal, just more in line with today’s times and language. Namely, f-bombs flying out of her pretty little mouth. Confession: I drop them like they’re hot. I’m working on not being so crass, but it’s not looking good. It’s hard to undo a lifetime of sailor-speak. I’m looking at you, Dad.

Any-hoo! The preorder price for The Demon King’s Destiny is only 99cents and I’ll keep it at the sale price until March 4, 2019. Remember, the series doesn’t have to be read in order, but it is recommended. Description below. Oh, and Book 1, The Wolf King’s Bride, is also 99cents. I think I’ll keep it there permanently.

When Marrok, the Demon King of Sundari, meets his fated mate in the dreamworld, he ignores the pull of the saatus bond. He has no desire to make a life with the female, not with his past being what it is. Unable to deny the bond for long, Marrok accepts his demon spirit’s need for its mate. He plans to use their connection to prevent him from turning rogue, while keeping his heart safely buried in the past.

Since the age of six, Evelyn has been dreaming of the Demon King. When she starts having visions of his past, old betrayals are brought to light, including an ancient brotherhood who has been working against the pair for decades. Knowing Marrok may never love her in the way she loves him, Evelyn chooses to fight for their future anyway. She’ll protect everyone she loves from the insidious group—or die trying.

***The Demon King’s Destiny is the third book in the Fate of Imperium Series. Each book is the story of a different king and his fated mate. While the three books do not have to be read in order, it is highly recommended.

Preordering Destiny

It’s almost time, y’all! The Demon King’s Destiny releases on February 25, 2019. I’ve got it up for preorder at a reduced price to show my appreciation for all the support I’ve gotten with the first two books in the series. I’ll keep it at 99cents until March 4, 2019. Remember, the series doesn’t have to be read in order, but it is recommended. Description below.

When Marrok, the Demon King of Sundari, meets his fated mate in the dreamworld, he ignores the pull of the saatus bond. Book 3 is Covered!

Universe! This one’s gonna be short and sweet. Like me. Mostly… I’m finally getting my act together. Well, at least when it comes to book covers. This is the official reveal of the cover for The Demon King’s Destiny. As with the other two books in this series, the cover rocks. Seriously. No, I don’ t have the preoder links up yet, Deborah. I’m working on it.

Back to my cover. I attribute my increased sales to my covers. I’ve sold more of this series than any other book I’ve written (under another moniker, fyi). We shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but we all do it. I have to give props to my cover artist, OliviaProDesigns on Fiverr.com. I think she created covers that truly contain the feel for what’s in the books. No, my writing isn’t as pretty as the cover, but the covers fit the stories. On very little information, she captured what I needed her to with these images.

If you’re an author looking for a cover artist at a super-reasonable price, then you need to get on Fiverr. Olivia’s my fave, but there are tons of graphic artists on the site. Some will even make promo stuff if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself. Personally, I make free promo images on canva.com. It’s user-friendly and has tons of free options.

Any-hoo, I just wanted to share my new cover. So I did. I’ll be posting links to the book this week. Happy Tuesday!

Destined to Demon

Salutations to 2019! I closed out my 2018 on an author high. I sold over 2,500 books in the month of the December–by far my most ever. The peak numbers are thanks to my Fate of Imperium Series, Books 1 & 2. Book 3, The Demon King’s Destiny, will release in the next 2-3 months. Sooner, if I can get my kids to leave me alone. Thanks holiday break, you killed my writing mojo. But it’s all good because I love the little punks.

Anyway, I’m excited about Book 3. It’s been a bit of a challenge pulling together the overarching theme running through the series while maintaining the love story of each couple as the main focus. I never imagined writing fantasy/paranormal and it’s been such a learning experience. Also, I’ve not added one f-bomb in any book. Challenge conquered! Yeah, yeah, anyone can refrain from the f-bomb, said no one in my family.

As a little sneak-peek, I’m including the prologue. Links will be posted as soon as I have them ready. Warning: this part is not romancy–is that a word?

Happy New Year!

Prologue

“Come closer, little one,” the hoarse voice reverberated through the woods.

The hairs on Evelyn’s neck and arms stood at full attention as the demon’s ensorcelled vocals echoed off her skin. Thankfully, his voice was the only thing he’d managed to get through her protective barrier.

She ignored the male, lowering her head and concentrating on her doll. Her long auburn hair fell over her shoulder like a dark silky curtain, hiding her face from the insidious creature.

More and more he had been visiting her dreams. With each visit, he grew bolder. Tonight, he’d ventured all the way to the edge of the clearing, watching her from the tree line. It was the furthest he’d ever dared.

In this dream, she was sitting on a blanket, playing with a handful of toys. Her two sisters were nearby, chasing each other through the tall goldenrod of the small field beside their home. Evelyn didn’t bother calling to them. They weren’t capable of seeing the demon when he visited.

He wasn’t like her sisters in this dreamworld. Eden and Nora weren’t actually here. They were pieces of Evelyn’s subconscious, intangible and incapable of being anything other than what her imagination deemed them to be.

The demon was real. Corporeal. He’d meant to be here. He had somehow broken through and now lurked in her forest.

She’d yet to get a good look at him, but she could sense his magic. Dark and dangerous, matching the exaggerated bass of his speech. Demons were known for their low tenor, but this one’s was aberrant, almost otherworldly.

The first time he’d broken through, she reached out with her senses to get a feel for his power. It felt cold and crude when he pushed back, like a cold wet tongue testing her flavor.

It had made her feel sick. Something about it was … wrong.

“Let me into the meadow, girl. I only want to talk.”

It was obvious he was lying. Her magics whispered to her and warned her to keep him away.

Evelyn wanted him to go away forever. She’d never been able to make him, no matter how many times she wished him gone.

Being unable to control her dreams was maddening. All she could do was put up a barrier between them and wait him out.

The demon had shown every night for a week now. Evelyn was worried he would eventually figure out how to reach her in the clearing.

Tonight, before she closed her eyes, she prayed to the Goddess of Sanctus Femina to either keep her safe or to make her strong enough to keep him at bay. She had an ominous feeling she was getting ready to find out if either of her wishes would be granted.

The male growled in frustration and Evelyn’s grip on her doll tightened. Still, she refused to look up at him.

Silence stretched as she sat on her gold and black blanket. She knew he was still there, probably pretending to be gone. Evelyn was not to be tricked. She could still feel his ugly magic.

Demons could use their powers to creep into the minds of others. They could control those they held under compulsion. Evelyn believed such powers were unnatural.

Her father, King Edward, had assured her she could shield against an attack, that her will was strong and she would not be vulnerable. Evelyn wasn’t keen on testing his theory.

Her strategy was to figure out how to simply make the demon go away, or to learn how to wake herself from her dreams.

Though she possessed a strong will, hadn’t been able to do either. It didn’t mean she wouldn’t continue trying, or that she wouldn’t stand her ground when push came to shove.

Evelyn waited patiently for him to leave. Staring at the worn and ragged figure in her hands, her fingers itched. Her powers were swirling, waiting, anticipating a confrontation.

Though she was young, only six years of age, she was not weak. If he broke through the barrier, she would be ready.

Something hummed through the atmosphere in the distance. Steadily, it grew louder, reminding her of a fast-approaching storm. The air thickened with electrical currents and Evelyn raised her face to the heavens.

A blinding light shot across the sky. She tracked it with her eyes until it disappeared, landing among the treetops, somewhere behind the trespasser.

The bad man growled again and ran towards the place where the traveling light vanished among the greenery. It was just beyond her line of sight.

Tempted as she was to investigate, Evelyn remained on her blanket. The sounds of her sisters’ play vanished, replaced by the echoes of snarls and grunts coming through the trees.

The noises disrupted the quiet of the forest. It sounded like two ferocious beasts locked in battle. A loud crash echoed, then silence fell.

Evelyn stood, concerned. Through the break in the trees, she could now see the shadow of a form rising to its feet.

“You’ve gone too far, Uncle!” the voice roared.

“No, I haven’t gone far enough! You’ll never be King, Marrok. Over my dead body will you take this throne from me.”

“I didn’t want the bloody throne, Brennon. Now you’ve left me no choice.”

The two males moved too fast for her to track. Suddenly, a body landed against the magical barrier separating the clearing from the forest, the one she’d built to protect herself.

The invisible shield pulsed with purple and white sparks. An enormous male jumped to his feet, glaring at her. Marrok. The bad male had called him Marrok.

For a heartbeat, he remained locked on her and she couldn’t draw a breath. His eyes widened slightly before quickly slanting down in displeasure.

Movement behind him caught Evelyn’s attention. “Look out!”

Brennon’s eerie tentacles of magic flew out of the woods. Marrok dove to the side and the ethereal appendages battered against Evelyn’s shield, trying to punch through it.

“You’ll never get to her,” Marrok seethed, searching the shadows for signs of his uncle’s location.

“Then neither shall you.”

A huge vortex of blackness came out of nowhere, whirling like a nest of vipers around Brennon as he stepped out of the underbrush. His eyes were wide, crazed. His mouth contorted as if he was lifting a great load.

Shite! Marrok cursed to himself. Brennon was completely out of control. He looked one last time at the youngling, praying he could hold off the menace.

“Run!” he hissed at her.

Dropping the doll, Evelyn ran for her life.

* * *

Marrok jackknifed off his thin bedding on the cave floor, clutching at his chest. His pulse raced as he felt for his heart.

Still there.

He could feel the pounding of his blood against his palm. A sheen of sweat covered his skin, cooling him in the damp air. The pain from the dream remained.

His pectoral was sensitive to his touch, burning with irritation. Marrok’s trembling hand lifted and came away bloody. Deep gashes from his uncle’s claws had shredded his shirt, easily slicing through the skin and muscle below.

He’d dreamwalked—or had he been summoned? His uncle had been surprised to see him, so it wasn’t Brennon who sought him.

The girl. It had to have been the youngling with the strange eyes.

Demons could enter the minds of others, especially when they were sleeping and relaxed. Sleep made more than just the physical form vulnerable.

He could only imagine the terrible things Brennon must have done to obtain knowledge of who the girl was. He’d purposefully broken into the child’s dreamworld. To do what? Marrok didn’t know. Whatever Brennon had planned, his uncle deserved the consequences he’d brought upon his own head.

Marrok lowered himself to his back, grinning at the thought of the Sundari royal guards finding Brennon’s open chest. Missing a heart.

“All is well, Sire?”

Marrok’s head jerked towards the sound of Favin’s voice. He could barely see the white-haired male lying across the alcove. The night’s fire was almost completely out.

“All is well, Favin. Tomorrow we return home.”

“Truly?” his Second whispered.

“Truly. We’ll tell the men in the morning.”

“But, how …?”

“In the morning, Favin.”

“Very well, Sire.”

Marrok closed his eyes, dreaming of the child who’d just handed him the kingdom.

Thank You, Mr. Vampire

Holy dynamite, Deborah! I finally figured out how to increase my book sales! Okay, okay, I didn’t actually “figure it out.” Though, I am seeing a very nice trend and I wanted to share it with my fellow authors and readers. In the spirit of full transparency, I don’t know what I’m doing majority of the time … with book marketing, parenting, cooking, you get the general idea. I’m more of a screw-it-let’s-see-what-happens sort of gal. After 2 years of self-publishing, I’m seeing some nice happenings.

Let’s rewind a bit. Up until September of 2018, everything I’ve written has been under my pen name, Cass Alexander. Those books are all humor-based romance (and a few erotic romances, as well). I released my first novel in the fall of 2016. No social media presence. No announcement of the release. I simply had it proof-read by a colleague and threw it out on Amazon. With the second and third books, I did make some effort to have Twitter going, Facebook, etc. Admittedly, I did very little to promote these aside from asking bloggers for reviews, posting on social media, and starting a blog.

It was very time-consuming (and frustrating) to get those books out there and in front of readers’ eyeballs. Eventually, I made Working On It, that first novel, permafree. Since then, it’s had steady downloads (thousands of them in two years) and often trends in Amazon’s Top 100 for General Humor. NOT in romance. Which, by the way, I find freaking hilarious.

In 2017, I started reading some amazing fantasy and paranormal romance. I wanted to try it. So I did. An author friend advised I not release under Cass’s moniker because the series I was writing was full-blown fantasy/paranormal and it lacked the level of inappropriate humor in my other novels. With much encouragement from friends, I put on my big girl panties and released The Wolf King’s Bride under my real name. I did pay someone to do a blog tour this time around ($50ish).

The result? I had more preorders for this book than any other I’ve had. Don’t get too excited. I had 20 preorders. It was a start. I think having a gorgeous book cover helped tremendously. After its release, I had steady sales, more than all my other books combined. Again, calm yourself. We’re talking an average of 10 or less a day. Nevertheless, I was very excited because I’d never consistently been able to sell books every day of the month.

In October, I set Book 2 for preorder (could have been September?). I had an explosion of preorders–over 100! I had a sale price of $0.99 and kept it until December 3rd (reg. $2.99). In November, I released The Vampire King’s Mate, and I saw a quick uptick in sales. For both books! If you look at the chart, the change is pretty dramatic. I’m averaging over 50 a day now. Trust me, no one’s more surprised than I am. I did pay $90 for a book tour site to announce my new release on 70+ blogs, as well as a $25 giveaway. This, I’m sure, contributed to the increase.

I’m working on Book 3 at the moment. Trying to write without the crazy humor isn’t easy. The first novel in the series, which sets the stage for everything, has gotten majority of positive reviews. Some have been pretty awful and I made a mistake by reading them. After reflecting, I did see how I did too much explaining and expository writing. I think I overcame this in the second book (which is my favorite one, btw). Despite a handful of low ratings, the book continues to sell. I think the biggest hurdle was just getting in in front of readers. I’ve made my money back tenfold, so I can only conclude paying for the blog tours was worth it.

I won’t discount, however, that readers might just love vampires and the sexy King of Prajna is the force behind this trend. I’m okay with that.

Release the Hounds! Er … Vampires!

Happy Release Day! No, it’s not a National holiday. It’s the day my new novel, The Vampire King’s Mate, releases. I’ve never been more excited for a release. Wait, that sounded kind of dirty. Get your mind out of the gutter, Deborah. Seriously, though, this is exciting. It’s my biggest release ev-ah! No, we’re not talking thousands of preorders and downloads. But I did have 8x as many preorders than I’ve ever had.

My Fate of Imperium Series is by far my best-selling. Yes, I’ve had thousands of downloads for my Working On It romantic comedy–but that book is free and under another name. So I don’t feel like it counts. It seems readers dig werewolves and vampires. I thought they might be getting kind of old. I thought wrong.

Book 1, The Wolf King’s Bride, released in September and has given me a good bump in sales compared to my books released under Cass Alexander. If you haven’t heard of Book 1, it can be found here, along with links to both released books. Technically, you don’t have to read them in order, though there is an overarching story line connecting all the books. Each novel is the story of a different kings and his fated mate.

With Book 2, in an attempt to boost preorders, I kept the preorder price at 99 cents. Since I have a Release Party on Facebook on Nov. 30, I’ve decided to keep that sale price through at least Dec. 1 (possibly Dec. 3–I have a crazy schedule this weekend). It seemed to have worked. I’ll shift the price to $2.99 in the next week and see how things shake out.

I don’t have much of a point with today’s post other than to shout to the Universe that my book is out. Oh, and it’s on sale, of course. I think I’ll try the low preorder price again when I release Book 3 in 2019. No, Deborah, it’s not finished yet. I have kids and they ruin everything … I mean, take up a lot of time.

Have a fabulous day, Readers!

Gift Horse

Yesterday morning, after logging on to Twitter, I received quite a surprise. I was tagged in a post by @HEAusatoday. At the time, I wasn’t following this entity, nor did I know anything about it. But that last part of the Twitter handle really caught my attention. I mean, USA Today, people. That’s a big deal, one I thought was too good to be true. So I did a little research. The results of which gave this author a nice little boost of confidence.

The link in the Tweet goes to a weekly list generated by USA Today’s Happy Ever After blog in conjunction with Smashwords, the website I use to distribute to iBooks, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, etc. The page is titled:

Smashwords Hotlist: Weekly indie romance bestsellers and hot preorders

Below is the description on the page:

HEA and Smashwords, the world’s largest distributor of indie e-books, have teamed up to bring HEA readers the week’s bestselling indie romance e-books and the hottest preorders. Bestselling books listed below can be purchased through Smashwords as well as other e-book retailers, while preorders can be ordered through Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble and Kobo.

After reading this, and already showing excitement for anything with my name and the word hotlist, I scrolled down. Low and behold, my book, The Vampire King’s Mate, was on the freakin’ list. I was beyond excited! This little gem is considered a hot preorder??? Wowzas.

I loved this! I was also very surprised by it. I mean, yes, this book has the highest number of preorders I’ve ever had for a book, but it’s not like I have thousands of people waiting for it to come out. Or, I don’t think I do. I can see my preorders on Amazon. I can see them on Smashwords, as well, but only for iBooks–I think Apple is the only distributor that reports preorders to Smashwords. I’m guessing I have to have some more with Kobo and Barnes & Noble. Which is awesome, because I think it’s the first time for me to get any preorders on those sites.

The first book of this series, The Wolf King’s Bride, is outselling all my other books combined. This explains why I’m getting more preorders for The Vampire King’s Mate. It must also be getting more than many other books up for preorder through Smashwords. It made me feel really good inside, seeing my name and my book on that blog. I know it’s not something that’s going to shoot me to super-star status overnight, but after one really bad review recently, I needed a little pick-me-up. And what a pick-me-up it was!

So, to Ms. Lamb with Happy Ever After and to Smashwords, I say thank you for providing a platform in which Indie Authors can gain some recognition. This is exciting stuff for little-known peeps like me. I know I don’t have thousands of preorders, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I have more than ever, and that’s a victory for me. For readers of my books, thank you so much for reading Book 1, then preordering Book 2.

If you’re a romance reader and would like to check out my Fate of Imperium Series, click here for descriptions and links to purchase. The Wolf King’s Bride is 99 cents. The Vampire King’s Mate is 99 cents to preorder. It releases 11/26/18, but I’ll hold the sales price through December 1 (regular price is $2.99).

Happy Reading, y’all. Oh, and Happy Halloween in a few days!
