A DESERVED FRIGHT – A SCARY STORY

A DESERVED FRIGHT! © 2020

By K. B. Pellegrino

Jack Gennaro and Bobby Regan, friends, and both 11-year-old sixth-graders lived a block away from each other. They typically walked to school each day together, were noted for getting in to a few fracases together, and teased their younger sisters to the exhaustion of their parents as if they planned the teasing together.

All that had changed. It was now COVID-19 time. They were now parked in front of their computer screens listening to their teacher...

Good Prevailing?

Given the heavy rhetoric we see on national news and other broadcasts, along with the COVID-19 inspired controls on our persons, I have taken the opportunity to examine an important issue. Is good prevailing? Given my allegiance to writing in the murder mystery and suspense genre, you may ask how I'm contributing to 'good prevailing.'
Famous murder mystery writers have defended their choice of genres declaring the following: a murdered victim needs the killer discovered to give some value to a life taken away so easily and assurance to society that it is not the norm. The question of why some person would do such a 'dastardly deed' must be understood if for no other reason than the prevention of such horrors in the future. Another important issue is the society within which the murder or murders occur. What elements in society would allow, perhaps even encourage, the taking out of the life of another? How does the murderer feel after his or her act? Is their even a modicum of guilt evidenced? Murder is important to examine. It is the most heinous of sins. The mystery of a theft, unless there is an enormous amount stolen is not so important; nor are the legacy of the many other crimes and injustices committed. No, murder must be examined both in fiction and non-fiction. Murder must be examined by psychologists, social workers, teachers, criminal justice experts, economists, statisticians, politicians, etc. Murder must be prevented to insure good prevails.

WORDS AND PICTURES

This photo is one from the marketing of my first book in the The Beauregard Mystery Series, “SUNNYSIDE ROAD –

PARADISE DISSEMBLING’ published in 2018. the photo shows, in a darkened light, a beautiful street in a suburban neighborhood. The cover of the book, not withstanding the body lying in the foreground, is bright with a large sun shining on all. The shade in the picture above gives us glimpses of a setting for horrible happenings in a neighborhood in the fictional town of West Side, Mas...

OH NO! HAS INDIAN SUMMER GONE?

Fifty-two degrees and rainy in Springfield, MA today. I slept in to an inordinate and unseemly time for a working author. Still, I awoke with a vigorous attitude towards my daily duties and writing. Small jobs faced me; jobs I normally try to put off. Perhaps the extra sleep took away my unhappiness with facing boring every day duties. One after another, I checked things of my list. I made phone calls: house insurance, car insurance, Library of Congress for number for sixth book, scheduling a la...

NEW BOOK

THE PREDATORY CABAL: WORM IN THE APPLE is my latest mystery novel with MCU Captain Rudy Beauregard and his detectives solving several murders of 'the beautiful people.' Why, just why did they have to die? Yes, they pushed the sexual envelope for highs; highs Rudy and his colleagues are most uncomfortable with. Perhaps their murders have less to do with sex and more to do with the age old reasons for murder: greed, power, and envy. Policing brings all of society's problems into its framework and the detectives must look deeper into the West Side community and perhaps, look back at their own experiences. Hope you like the read.

EMPTYING THE BRAIN

I spent a weekend at a beautiful location on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, near Wolfboro, New Hampshire. This 21 mile long by 8/5 mile wide lake is the site of America’s history starting with the English Tories. The town is the oldest vacation site in the U.S. The weather was too cool for swimming and even boating in the pontoon craft available. Family was there, ensconced in a modern designed/built home with the feel of the nineteenth century. Time did not rush by. The work of the day was t...

NEW MYSTERY OUT IN FOUR DAYS....

The fifth mystery novel in the West Mass MCU Captain Beauregard series is available for order in 4 days on Amazon and in all related bookstores and epubs. I hope you will read it. Our hardworking MCU detectives face a particularly challenging scenario involving sado-masochistic practices in their small city/suburban domain. If not for murder of a beautiful woman, the pushing the envelope in seeking pain in sex would have been unknown to these detectives. Personal history for several of the detectives emerges and their ignorance and confusion on the subject of sexual mores in their community is at first an impediment for solving multiple murders. Hope you will enjoy the read with good prevailing, mostly.

Neighboring…

We all do it, sometimes. Neighboring! Good works done for someone who lives in the area; even if you are not personally acquainted. Proximity of living seems to bring out connections we don’t often talk about. I try to be a good neighbor, helping when I see a need. I exert myself to speak and smile at all opportunities when passing on the street during my morning walks. After all, we are a section of an urban area that feels very much like a suburb not two miles from city center. We have much in...

SEPTEMBER 17TH

Dear Readers, I hold this date dear! It is the anniversary of my parents wedding - their starting date. I am the third of their five children who survived the first year of life, making me a middle child with all its implications. My mom lost a little girl seven months before my birth and I imagine she may have been grieving. As a child I felt the squeeze of two above who knew everything and two below who would get into mischief and I would be held accountable. The family permanent record, however, tells a different story. It reports my misdoings as the fault of a stubborn and dreamy-eyed child who fell short of reaching the expected standards of behavior. I think however, my imperfections catapulted me to reach always for the next possibility. To my mind I wanted to achieve but only in what I was interested in at the time and not in what was expected of me. Not unlike many children today! I was a good student in spite of my wayward ways, but appeared to learn my lessons in a manner contrary to what the good nuns thought was the correct progression for knowledge acquisition. I'd read the end of all books or chapters first. I wished to see where I was expected to go to determine if the effort would be worth it. I did shortcuts in math problems without showing how I ended with the proper solution. And, to everyone's surprise, it is how I write fiction today. Never orthodox, but always committed. I sincerely hope that any writers out there stay within their personalities when they write. Still learn from other writers, but do not be dissuaded to deviate from your own truth.
