New interview with Catalin Stefanescu for Romanian TV station TVR1

Whilst in Romania this July for a festival appearance I was interviewed at length by broadcaster Cătălin Ştefănescu for Romanian TV station TVR1. Some of what we discussed you might have heard me talk about before, but Cătălin was very good at challenging my own pre-conceptions and motivations, so it turned out to be one of the most personal filmed interviews I’ve given.

Home Invasion: In Concert at the Royal Albert Hall

I’m proud to announce that a concert film of the spectacular career-spanning To the Bone tour is to be released in several formats later this year.

PRE-ORDER NOW

Home Invasion captures the final night of my three night March 2018 residency at what is probably my favourite venue in the world, the Royal Albert Hall in London. The full performance is included, and it looks and sounds absolutely fantastic, everyone involved working incredibly hard to make this a really high quality release in all departments, and to capture the visual elements of the show (plus as you would expect with a show presented in quadraphonic sound audio options also include a surround sound mix). Bonus material consists of 3 additional songs not part of the main show (Routine, Hand Cannot Erase, and Heartattack in a Layby) filmed in the empty venue during the afternoon soundcheck, as well as interview / backstage footage. Over 3 hours of content in total.

Home Invasion: In Concert at the Royal Albert Hall will be released on 2nd November by Eagle Rock / Universal in a number of formats: Blu-ray, DVD, Blu-ray/2CD, DVD/2CD. A deluxe 5LP vinyl version will be released later on in March 2019.

The CDs include the full soundtrack of the concert across 2 discs, while the fifth LP in the vinyl set additionally includes the 3 soundcheck songs as well as 3 songs taken from the previous night’s performance (How is Your Life Today?, Blackfield, and Postcard), again none of which were performed during the filming and are therefore exclusive to the vinyl.

One Year Anniversary of To The Bone

Today marks the one year anniversary of the release of To the Bone, where does the time go?! Did you hear the album? Did you like it? While I’m proud of all my albums, along with Insurgentes it’s probably my favourite, maybe because both albums feature what I think of as just “SW music”, without being connected to any particular genre. To the Bone has some of my most approachable songs, which definitely helped to bring new people to my music, especially Pariah and Permanating, plus it almost gave me my first UK number one, sitting in that position for most of the release week (although it was edged out by Elvis and Ed Sheeran on the final day).

The album then formed the basis for my most epic live show / tour to date, which was captured on film at the last of the 3 concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, London in March. This should be released before the end of the year, full details and previews soon.

In the meantime a reminder that the last To the Bone tour leg will take place between November-February in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Europe, see here for dates and ticket information.

Kunst!Rasen open air show in Bonn – photos by Hajo Mueller

Hajo Mueller captured some special moments before and during the Kunst!Rasen open air show in Bonn last week. After being glorious weather during the day, a storm arrived in the evening, resulting in the band performing to a sea of pink kagools – but still a great time was had by all, thanks to the audience for not allowing the weather to dampen their enthusiasm!

Steven’s day in Dresden

Yesterday myself and the band had a magical day in the beautiful city of Dresden, where we were playing an open air show at the Junge Garde in the park. In the afternoon I went for a ride on the Dresdner Parkeisbahn, a small railway that runs around the park and has the novelty of being completely run by children (you know how much I like trains). Then there are some photos of the afternoon soundcheck, the show itself, and finally a moment at the end of the show when I jumped off the stage to get a photo with a family that had their own versions of my stage t-shirt, including a mini version. Thanks guys, I never thought I’d become a fashion trend-setter!

A perfect day, and thanks to the wonderful audience for helping to make it such a beautiful evening.

Bass Communion/Precision Surgery remixes on Kurzwellen 8

Many of you will be aware of my love of industrial and noise music, and one of my favourite labels of this kind in recent years has been the old school 80’s industrial revivalist label Kurzwellen, affiliated with ToneFloat from the Netherlands (who have released many of my projects over the years, including the IEM and Bass Communion box sets). Each of their releases so far have been in the form of hyper limited edition vinyl only releases, sometimes only 100 copies of so, and each is housed in a 24x36inch silkscreen poster sleeve with suitably grim black and white imagery. This time around the label played me a new album they were releasing as Kurzwellen 7, “Hinterkaifeck” by Precision Surgery (Hinterkaifeck being the location of a famous unsolved murder from the 1920’s), and I felt inspired to create 2 minimal Bass Communion remix treatments which are now being released alongside the Precision Surgery album as Kurzwellen 8. Both LPs are out on 7th July and can be pre-ordered from the Tonefloat Store. Not recommended for people who find the music under my own name quite depressing enough already thank you very much…

To The Bone Americas Tour Roundup

I’m happy to be back home for a few weeks following our long trip through North and South America. I want to thank all the wonderful people that came along to these concerts, you helped to make every show special. I can’t remember having a single night where I walked off stage and didn’t feel like the experience hadn’t been inspiring and unique in some way. However, while I’d managed to get though the whole 2018 tour without getting sick, my perfect record unfortunately came to an abrupt end on show 67, the (wouldn’t you just know it?) very last date of the tour in São Paulo, Brazil, at which I had finally succumbed to illness, in this case a gastric flu which meant when I walked on stage I hadn’t been able to eat anything for about 48 hours. But I managed to stay standing (well OK I sat down for some of it) for 3 hours after being lifted by the incredible atmosphere that the Brazilian audience always knows how to generate. In fact these final shows across Latin America were amongst the most inspiring of the whole tour, as we performed to 13,000 people across 6 concerts in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. The support and love for the music never fails to touch me, with the fan tributes particularly incredible on this tour. Special mention needs to go out to the whole band (including Ninet) rendered as anime characters by Japanese artist Maro (who flew from her home country to see the concerts in Seattle and Portland), and a wonderful SW puppet gifted me by a Chilean fan (my apologies for not knowing your name, but I love it, thanks!) The bootleg merchandise on sale outside the venue in Mexico City is also always something to look forward to, and this time around this tastefully designed cap was a big favourite!

For those of you who haven’t been able to see the To the Bone tour in the flesh, or if you have but just want to see it again in the comfort of your own home, the Royal Albert Hall concert film is being edited and mixed as we speak. It will include the whole of the third night’s performance in this beautiful venue, as well as some extra songs not included in the gig set list that were filmed earlier in the day in an empty venue. Official announcements on title, contents and formats coming soon.

Later in the year I’m planning on recording some new material (very different again is all I can say right now), but next there are some festival appearances from late June through July, so hopefully see some of you there. Hellfest in France should be particularly interesting, don’t expect to hear Permanating at that one!
