I.E.M. now available digitally on Bandcamp

My krautrock inspired project I.E.M. was active in the late 90’s, making 3 albums and an EP of mostly improvised instrumental music, quite similar in a way to the more abstract / spacier aspects of the early solo-era Porcupine Tree – All of the music is long out of print in any physical form, but for those with an interest I’ve now made it available on Bandcamp: iemmusic1.bandcamp.com

Gary Kemp – Waiting for the Band (Steven Wilson Remix) out now!

I’m very happy to announce the digital release of my 11 minute remix of Gary Kemp’s Waiting for the Band today. The original track is from Gary’s brand new album out on Columbia this week Insolo. The song has a wonderful sense of nostalgic melancholy about it, so I took that atmosphere and ran with it over the extended version. The mix is also very fortunate to feature Mike Garson contributing piano, not only for his beautiful playing, but also because Mike was the keyboard player in the David Bowie band show Gary saw in 1973 that served as the inspiration for the song. Thanks to Gary for the invitation to do this and I hope you enjoy!

New Bass Communion album And No Birds Sing out now

A brand new Bass Communion album And No Birds Sing is exclusively available on bandcamp, for a limited time at a super low price. 2 long pieces (41 minutes) that originated as sound design / soundtrack material for the work in progress movie of the same name. This first 28 minute sequence is assembled from material created for the film, dark industrial sound design, with cavernous metal scrapes, water drips, subterranean drones, and shortwave radio transmissions. The second theme piece is more beautiful and harmonic, built around a sequence of chords in regular intervals that only resolves at the beginning after moving through 24 different piano chords.

And No Birds Sing is a story that crosses genres, having aspects of Psychological Thriller, Horror and Mystery. Reality merges with film and the supernatural when a London director starts to experience strange events and is forced to confront his troubled past. The film blurs the lines of reality, memory and fiction where sound constantly motivates the twists and turns of the action.

So far a 4 minute test trailer for the film has been shot, watch it below!

New single ANYONE BUT ME out now!

ANYONE BUT ME was a casualty of COVID-19. It was originally the closing song on THE FUTURE BITES, the album was even mastered and cut with it in place, but the delay in releasing the album gave me the chance to re-evaluate and I decided to replace it with the more laid back and atmospheric COUNT OF UNEASE. I still love this song though. Lyrically it’s about how it’s now possible to present to the world a version of yourself via social media that may have no bearing on reality – photos of yourself in places you’ve never been, hanging out with friends you’ve never met. It’s becoming more important to create the illusion of a desirable life on social media than it is to actually live it.

Steven Wilson – synthesisers, piano, hammond organ, acoustic guitar, bass, vocals
David Kosten – programming
Fyfe Dangerfield – vocals
Michael Spearman – drums
String arrangement by SW, performed by the London Session Orchestra conducted by Guy Protheroe

PERSONAL SHOPPER Nile Rodgers Remix Out Now!

You can probably tell from PERSONAL SHOPPER that I grew up hearing a lot of disco music played in the Wilson house, including the classic Chic masterpieces, so it’s an absolute thrill to have Nile Rodgers stamp his legendary signature sound on the track.

The Future Bites Tour 2021 Update

Sadly for the second time I am forced to postpone my tour to promote THE FUTURE BITES – the rescheduled dates were due to begin in September. While recent developments made me at least optimistic that the UK shows might have been able to go ahead (though no guarantee), the same is not true of much of the rest of Europe. With it now clear that it would not have been possible to proceed with many of the shows I have reluctantly made the decision to cancel the whole tour. As a solo artist so many of my expenses are in advance, rehearsal and musician costs, developing the production, so to then only be able to perform a handful of shows at best would simply not have been financially feasible. Once again I must apologise for the disappointment and any inconvenience caused.

I plan to use the time creatively and to complete and release 2 new albums I have in progress in 2022 and 2023 respectively. With that in mind it makes more sense for me to now look forward to touring these albums instead, and to incorporate the TFB ideas and songs.

In the meantime there is more TFB related music on the way over the coming months in the form of some fantastic remixes and a release for the song ANYONE BUT ME, which was originally the closing track on the album but which I replaced with COUNT OF UNEASE. Right now I’m also working hard to finish my book which will be published later this year by Little Brown – news on all this soon.

The world is totally messed up at the moment, and the cancellation of my tour is not especially significant in the grand scheme of things, all the same I was very excited to be finally getting out there and interacting with real musicians in front of a real audience again, so this is a real blow. Thanks again for your understanding and patience. S x
