First Look Friday: The End?

The following is a chapter from my current WIP, The Key of Eidolon.
The End?
“Well, then, let us make haste away from this place!” Captain Hagar declared. “We must throw Nyarlathotep off our trail. Of course, because you are still corporeal, we must stick to places that are in the Goldilocks Zone. A place too hot or a place too cold or a place without proper atmosphere will not do at all.”
“We could lock mind and head for Venus in the Sixth Dimension,” Zkauba suggested. “It is a fine place where we can stand tall and breathe free while we contemplate our next move. My energy levels are not quite optimal yet and I will require a bit of assistance from you to create the gate.”
“Splendid! Because I need you to invite me to leave this place with you. I enraged some half-assed sorcerer and he put a spell on me trapping me in this tenement.”
“Far be it from me to question your methods, my good fellow, but if you had managed to manifest an actual pack animal instead of a wizard temporarily transformed into a pack animal, how did you intend to receive an invitation to part from this place?”
‘Well, I supposed that if I could manifest a pack animal, I would be able to manifest a clairvoyant.”
“Your magical abilities are strong, but your mystic directional abilities require honing. You manifested not only what you wanted but what you needed. In fact, it is my belief that your spell interfered with my spell and that is why I was transformed into a sheep.”
“An interesting theory, Matey, but I was trying to manifest a mule.”
“My good fellow, this is where my spell interfered with your spell. I did not have a clear picture in my mind what form I was planning to take and as I cast my spell, a shepherd walked by the alley with his flock in tow. Our two spells melded, transforming me into a sheep. This seems to have been an odd bit of good fortune.”
“I agree, my friend. Perhaps once we’ve located the treasure, you can teach me to hone my mystic directional abilities. I was fortunate to have an adept navigator during my time on the Seven Seas, for my physical directional skills had a mind of their own as well.”
The silver key commenced to glow and vibrate.
“Captain Sammy, we must make haste!” Zkauba ordered. “Quickly, concentrate on helping me form a gate!”
“Cool, cool, absolutely. Now, don’t forget to invite me through the gate.”
“Yes, of course. Captain Sammy Hagar, will you do me the honor of accompanying me through this gate on to our next adventure?”
“With you all the way, Matey,” the pirate agreed as a shimmering opalescent ovoid appeared in the tenement wall.
With a determined bleat and a shout of “yo-ho-ho!” the pair leaped through the gate.
AcknowledgmentsNyarlathotep is the creation of H.P. Lovecraft, initially appearing in his 1920 story of the same name.
The character Captain Sammy Hagar was created as a tribute to the musician Sammy Hagar, who wrote the 1982 song “Three Lock Box,” which inspired the plot of the first Tales from the Dreamlands book. Although Captain Sammy Hagar’s physical appearance and general personality resemble the person on whom he was modeled, no implication of the real Sammy Hagar’s character is intended.
Portions of the dialogue in the chapter were inspired by the 2001 song “Venus” by Butthole Surfers and the 1986 song “The Final Countdown” by Europe.
The story utilized the 12 November 2020 Tale Weaver prompt “The End.”

WIP Wednesday: Too Many Tacos

The day would have been a hilarious experience to most observers, but not to the Yaddithian wizard Zkauba, who cursed his decision to come to the Jopsan Market in Sakrab in the hopes of purchasing a necessary component for his pilfered soft drink dispenser at a pittance. He had only intended to remain for as long as it took to obtain the part, but before he knew it, he had consumed too many tacos chased by more than a touch too much Jopsan Nectar, a zesty fermented beverage that tasted like a perfect combination of Terran apple cider with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
“Blasted Jopsan Nectar is like drinking a fizzy apple pie!” the tapir-faced, bird-headed, insectoid wizard groaned as he hurried into a clandestine alley where he could empty his bursting bladder behind a waste receptacle. “Curse it all, in my time on Earth, I learned to love Terran foods far too well! I should have stuck to my plan to get the necessary component for the dispenser and get out, but how could I resist a tasty street taco or a dozen with a pint or two of Jopsan Nectar to chase them ever so delightfully down my gullet in a fizzy fountain of flavor?”
The silver key on the black metallic cord around Zkauba’s wattled neck vibrated and glowed.
“Yes, yes, my precious friend, I am aware that they are in pursuit,” Zkauba acknowledged. “I must manipulate my form, so they are not able to spot me as quickly. I shall transmogrify myself into the form of a…”
At that moment, a shepherd walked by the alley with a flock of bleating sheep. Before Zkauba had the chance to hone his spell, he was transmuted into a sheep himself.
“Blast!” Zkauba bleated. “Well, I suppose they won’t be looking for a sheep, so this may be advantageous. Still, I had better hide lest an overly zealous shepherd attempts to integrate me into his flock.”
Zkauba glanced up and spotted a charming vase full of sunflowers sitting in a windowsill. As he looked at the sunflowers, he began to salivate.
“Oh, this is ridiculous,” Zkauba wailed, his complaint bursting forth in an impassioned bleat. “I cannot very well accomplish my mission in the guise of a sheep! What I need is a good night’s sleep. Perhaps this ramshackle building can serve as a hotel. Then again, perhaps I should just return to the base beneath Tfgil and rest for a time before seeking out the component to my drink dispenser in a place that is Nyarlathotep-free. Blast it all, why could I not have turned into a bird? Then I could flutter up and away through the window instead of having to climb stairs on four legs!”
Zkauba was conscious of the clacking of his hooves as he loped up the stairs in the nearly abandoned tenement. He had the odd thought of wondering if his wrists would hurt when he changed back to his normal form, considering that he was not usually a quadruped.
AcknowledgmentsNyarlathotep is the creation of H.P. Lovecraft, initially appearing in his 1920 story of the same name.
Yaddith, the silver key, and the wizard Zkauba appear in the 1934 story “Through the Gates of the Silver Key” by H.P. Lovecraft and E. Hoffmann Price.

The Truth About Jenny: #MFRWsteam

The BlurbWhen all-American rodeo cowboy Frank Hamilton meets an unusual young woman in the parking lot at his best buddy's roadhouse, he and his friends are in for a wilder ride than they could ever have imagined.
The SnippetJenny wasted no time revealing the truth about herself to Frank. The invasion force targeting Earth had been wiped out by unexpected space junk. A few pods were released, which fell in various locations across the planet. Jenny wondered if Frank would help her. Looking into her hypnotic lavender eyes, his mind was filled with visions of this impossibly perfect woman pleasing him in amazing ways, and he agreed immediately to assist her.
Frank realized that there was no way his services would be enough for Jenny. He had always prided himself on not being the jealous type. He was a good-looking guy, the epitome of the all-American boy. He stood six feet one, had a lean but muscular build with biceps that the girls just loved to squeeze and defined chest and abs that were the result of disciplined daily training. He had wavy blond hair, dark blue eyes, and even when his peers were struggling with acne during adolescence, he had remained remarkably clear-skinned. Frank Hamilton was all that, but he could never be enough for the woman he couldn’t get enough of.

In the Jopsan Market

In the Jopsan Market
“We are here,” he said, and Rilpu could see the gleam of his perfect white teeth in the phosphorescent glow of the map. “The star is called Lerna, the planet is called Kilnic, this moon is called Lythalia. Oh, splendid! This may work in your favor. Lythalia is an ally of Rokon and Yig. This city, famous for its marketplaces and infamous for its dens of thieves is Sakrab. This marketplace is the Jopsan Market. Fortunately, we should not have to worry about cutpurses, for the straps of these satchels are not easily hewn by normal blades.”

First Look Friday: Beneath the Bubbles

Beneath the Bubbles
“Would you like to inspect my grimoire while I gather the items necessary to invoke Han?” Nyarlathotep inquired, snapping Rilpu out of her reverie as she gazed at the bubbles forming outside the dome protecting the underwater city from Lake Hali.
“We can’t invoke Han here,” Rilpu protested, her perplexed golden eyes regarding the youthful-looking Outer God as he bustled about his disheveled laboratory, gathering various items and placing them in a bag.
“We could,” Nyarlathotep countered. “I need only utilize the correct components to cause the mirror to create a cold mist suitable to summoning him. As you can see, I have practically everything one could possibly need for nearly any magical application.”
“Your collection is most impressive,” Rilpu agreed, gazing in awe at the multitude of shelves in various states of cohesion. “However, there is one thing that troubles me regarding this suggestion.”
“Tell me, and I shall do my best to allay your misgivings.”
“Han is bound to King Rokon’s brother, Yig,” Rilpu revealed almost apologetically. “Yig is your sworn enemy. I do not know if Han would serve you.”
“He might not serve me, but he will serve you, and that is all that matters,” Nyarlathotep soothed, reaching to gently clasp Rilpu’s hand.
Rilpu swallowed hard. In this form, the Intellect of the Outer Gods was boyish and beautiful, jovial, and, seemingly, a faithful friend. Yet she could not allow herself to fully trust him, no matter how much she wished she could.
Rilpu also could not stop herself from wishing that the handsome young man clasping her hands were simply a magical boy from an underwater kingdom; a boy that she could join hands and hearts with and even allow herself to love. Her efforts to bring these emotions under control were in vain even as she tried to quiet them with the admonishment that this was a being older than time itself who assumed many guises and whose actions had destroyed worlds.
A tear slid down the serpent maiden’s cheek. Nyarlathotep reached to dry it away, but she lashed out, gripping his wrist.
“Tell me that you cannot love me!” Rilpu exclaimed vehemently. “Tell me, and then assume another form. The form of a man in his middle or elder years, the form of a female, the form of a beast, the form of anything but the one young man who could steal my heart and cause me to abandon my dreams, my kingdom, my mission. Tell me that you cannot be what is causing my heart to break. Please, my lord! I cannot bear it!”
“I am sorry, for your pain, Little Sister,” Nyarlathotep said gently, folding Rilpu in his arms.
