“Zkauba, my friend, how are you faring?” he askedhis other companion, an alien creature with a vulture-like head, tapir-likesnout, insectoid legs, and arms resembling bird talons.

“Sammy, I have traveled through many gates in mylong existence,” the creature observed in well-enunciated English, with an airreminiscent of an aristocratic New Englander. “I must agree with the young ladythat this was among the most unsettling gates I have ever traversed. It is ashame we are not in Hlanith where we could abscond to a tavern, and I couldsettle my stomach with a crispy cold cola. I am sure I will be all right.However, I must admit the smell of this place is doing little to calm thestormy state of my innards.”

“Try one of these candies,” Rilpu suggested,handing the queasy wizard a butterscotch disc.

“I am sure it will be beneficial.”

“Thank you, Dear,” Zkauba said, popping the candyinto his mouth.

It was into this scene that three peculiartravelers fell from an ovoid of light the color of key lime pie filling.Despite the bumpy landing, the first of the trio seemed unperturbed. Thissturdy, mature gentleman quickly righted himself, doing a jaunty jig in theair, his silver and gold curls bouncing as he moved. A beam of moonlight passedthrough him, revealing his ethereal nature. The spectre hastened to assist hiscompanions.

“Rilpu, are you all right, Lass?” he inquired of awillowy young humanoid woman in her late adolescent years. As she rose from theground, she brushed her cherry-red hair away from her face, securing it with abrown scrunchie taken from the red bag slung across her body. Her golden eyeswere reminiscent of those of a snake, and her smile revealed pointed fangs.

“I am well, Captain Sammy,” she replied. “It wasquite a wild ride through that last gate, though. I hope we might find adifferent way to exit."

It shouldn’t be too hard to forget about thatbaffling dream when there’s so much going on this month. Father Taras Koszorús ropedthe football team into helping with his Fourth of July Project. He really didn’t have totwist our arms. What kind of heartless Scrooge wouldn’t want to support acharity helping Arizona’s foster care programs find permanent homes for kids?

I may have molded myself into an archetypal hunkwith the help of Dad’s money, but I always get tears in my eyes when FatherTaras tells his story about being adopted by the American G.I. who rescued himduring the Western Allied Invasion of Germany. I hope we canmake this a great celebration for the kids. There’s going to be a big cookoutwith music and games followed by fireworks. I’m so proud to be part of it.
