The Perfect Ten Book Blitz #rabtbooktours
Fiction / Drama
Date Published: May 22, 2025
The Perfect Ten is a gripping tale of friendship, betrayal, and the lengths people will go to when pushed to the edge.
When three high school friends witness a disturbing event, they make a pact to never speak of it again. Twenty-five years later, their high school reunion reignites not only memories—but a dangerous new alliance. Two of the men are facing personal crises: one is drowning in debt, the other desperate to save his wife from a rare cancer. Their third friend, connected to a powerful mafia family, may hold the key to their salvation—but at what cost?
As the trio ventures into the high-stakes world of counterfeiting, an unexpected fourth member joins their scheme—a once-forgotten classmate whose transformation is as stunning as it is surprising.
Spanning the coal mines of Pennsylvania to the glittering heights of Manhattan’s finance and fashion districts, The Perfect Ten takes readers on an international journey filled with twists, secrets, and moral gray areas. With characters you’ll root for and a pace that never lets up, this smart, fast-moving thriller asks: How far would you go for the people you love?
John R. Iredale was born in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, and earned his doctorate in podiatric medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1967. He went on to practice podiatry for nearly five decades in Durham, North Carolina. Known by friends, family, and patients as a natural-born storyteller, John often found inspiration in the lives of those around him. His deep curiosity and attentive ear uncovered stories that spanned generations, cultures, and communities.
In retirement, John finally turned to the page, sharing the vivid tales that have been living in his memory and imagination for years. The Perfect Ten is his debut novel—a suspenseful blend of crime, loyalty, and the power of old friends with unfinished business.

Sometimes a happy ending comes with heartbreak.
Falling in love with my father’s best friend wasn’t on my to-do list. Yes, he’s hot. Sure, I’ve been flirting with him since I was sixteen. Of course I’d be down for a little fun.
When Laiken begins returning my flirting, things get heated. It was supposed to be sexy summer fun and nothing more. We weren’t planning on making this a forever thing.
But falling in love isn’t a choice.
As it turns out, not everyone agrees and sometimes disapproval is loud, painful, and heartbreaking.

Excerpt
I’m no stranger to Elijah Cain. I’ve seen him nearly every single day of his life since the moment he was conceived. His father, Nason, and I have been friends for over thirty years.
He began flirting with me four years ago when he was in high school, and at the time, I found it nothing but amusing. He was a kid. He’s my best friend’s son. In a way, he felt like my nephew.
But when he came home from college a few months ago, he’d suddenly stopped looking like a child to me. He was now an adult. Everything about him had grown up. And I’ve found that I really like every damn thing I see.
He’s adorable. He looks so much like his father but with his mother’s Latina complexion. The combination of Miranda and Nason is simply breathtaking. I’ve always thought so. I’ve always thought that Elijah was an adorable child.
Adorable has grown up into a man that never leaves my mind. His flirting hasn’t stopped. If anything, it’s increased. I’m not sure if he’s just a flirt or if it’s intentionally directed at me.
Not that it matters. I can’t go there. That’s Nason’s kid! My best friend’s only child and the man whom I can’t stop thinking about day or night.

There is no jolt. Or shock. Or sudden, great intake of breath. Your eyes don’t snap open. This is no rebirth. It’s like waking up but not remembering the moment you were no longer asleep. You will hurt, depending on how you went, and you will scar, but you will live again. And that’s all that matters.
The whistle woke Allery from death, but it was the feeling of being smothered that made her heart hammer. She couldn’t move—the new-shower-curtain smell of the body bag seemed like the only thing between her and six foot of earth pressing down around her. No, it wouldn’t be six foot; they must’ve almost dug her out for her to have heard their signal. God, they couldn’t get to her quick enough.
Don’t panic. Don’t panic.
The material moved against her mouth when she breathed, so she clamped her lips together and exhaled hard through her nose instead. She didn’t dare open her eyes. She reminded herself she wouldn’t be trapped underground for eternity. They were coming. There was nothing for her to panic about.
She swallowed, grimacing at the dryness of her throat. Hanging was not a pleasant way to go but it had been a necessity. The prison guards had told her the only way she’d leave would be in a body bag and she’d smiled.
She longed to be able to bend her knees and lift her arms above her head but if she moved even an inch the earth moved with her, filling the wiggle room.
It wasn’t quite silent underground; if she strained her ears, she could hear a faint scratching of metal against rocks and a thumping of soil.
They were digging her up. They’d know not to keep jabbing into the ground like that, wouldn’t they? She didn’t know how much having a spade in the guts would hurt and she didn’t like to hazard a guess. The noises grew louder, and she could hear voices above.
“…hurry up!” Esme, impatient as usual.
“Well, if you put your back into it…” She couldn’t work out if that was Driscoll or Nick. Driscoll, probably. Nick would be on lookout, listening to the trees, checking for the guards.
The pressure eased on her chest as the soil lifted and she thrashed about to free herself. She opened her eyes though she could see nothing.
“Got her.” Esme’s voice again. “Quick, help her.”
Somebody unzipped the body bag and she got herself out of it as fast as she could. Esme grabbed her arms and pulled her out of the grave. The early evening gloom welcomed her back to the land of the living, and she quickly relaxed—the adrenaline dropping away left her shivering and aware of the fact she needed a wee.
She stood on the ground beside the open grave and brushed dirt from her grey prison uniform. Esme leaned on her shovel, a big grin on her pretty face. Driscoll thrust out his hand.
“Good to have you back, Al,” he said.
“I’m glad to be out of that place,” she replied, taking his hand.
“Did you get the information?”
She smiled. “Of course.” Driscoll didn’t ask for it. It wasn’t safe for anyone else to know; the wardens were also looking for the key, and if she had managed to find out about it, they would, too. Eventually.
The forest was full of unmarked graves; rectangles of fresh dirt nearby the only clues that anybody had been buried there at all. Who cared about a bunch of dead criminals? Allery frowned but Driscoll shoved his spade into the pile of earth and began filling the hole she’d climbed out of, stirring her into action. She took the shovel from Esme and helped him.
“Least they didn’t cut you open to find out how you died,” Driscoll commented.
Allery could still feel the rope burn around her neck. She smiled a little but didn’t reply. After they’d patted the ground flat, she hefted the spade over her shoulder, aware they might have to bolt at any moment.
“So, are we going after it now?” Esme asked.
Allery arched her back and stretched her neck, making the bones click. “I’ve just come back to life after spending far too long locked up,” she said. “It can wait one more day.”
“I’m sure it can,” Driscoll agreed, scratching his moustache with a chewed fingernail. “For now, how about we head home and have a little celebratory drink. The sooner we’re away from here, the better. Nick! Get your arse over here.”
It was always hard to pull Nick away from the trees once he was connected. He stood, palms to the trunk of a sycamore, his forehead pressed lightly against the bark, and Esme went to him, placed a hand on his shoulder, and put her lips to his ear. Allery dropped her gaze with a smile, imagining exactly what Esme would’ve said to get his attention.
“Jealous?” Driscoll teased, giving her a nudge with his elbow.
“Let’s go and get that drink,” she replied, hooking her arm through his. “And get the hell away from this place.” She took one last look at the grey walls of the prison peeking through the trees before turning away.

I came to the sacred island to pay my family's debt. I never expected to lose my heart.
Blurb
My name is Callis, and I'm an offering.
Sent to Eletheria—the legendary pleasure palace where gods once walked among mortals—I have one purpose: submit to the bonding ritual, serve my time, and return home with my family's honor restored.
But the man who chooses me changes everything.
Auren is silver-haired, devastatingly beautiful, and dangerously powerful. As a Thorn of the sacred order, he needs to complete a successful bond to advance in rank. I should be just another transaction to him—a means to an end.
Instead, he awakens something in me I never knew existed.
Under his skilled touch, I discover pleasure that burns hotter than temple incense. The bond between us grows deeper than any ritual, more consuming than prayer itself. But Auren carries the scars of three failed bonds, and I have a ship waiting to take me home.
As our connection intensifies, I'm forced to choose: honor my duty and leave, or risk everything for a love that could either complete us both—or destroy us.
Some debts can only be paid with the heart.
Excerpt
Auren's eyes didn't leave mine. He took a step forward, then another, just enough to draw closer without closing the distance completely. His movements were measured and elegant. Confident without the need to prove it.
"I believe the state of my attire is acceptable, Callis," he said, voice low and smooth, a flicker of mischief curling at the corner of his mouth. His eyes gleamed—was it amusement, or something darker?
The lead priest stepped forward again, drawing our attention back to him with a subtle lift of his hand. The scent of resin filled the space as one priest lit the offering fire. Smoke curled upward, sweet and sharp, as the brazier took its breath.
When the priest then turned to me, "Come hither, and place your hand upon the staff."
I moved.
I didn't trust my legs, but they carried me. I stopped in front of Auren, lifted one hand, and set it lightly over his where he gripped the staff.
It was warm. His skin. The staff. The silver. Everything felt charged.
"Speak," the priest said, not unkindly.
I drew breath. "I accept," I said. My voice was quiet, but it didn't shake. "I accept this bond. I come in truth, though I do not know what waits. I offer what I am, and will not turn away."
The priests withdrew, leaving us alone.
Auren's hand found mine again, warm and firm.
We undressed each other slowly.
Not ceremonially, though it felt like a ritual. Not erotically, though there was no mistaking the heat under my skin.
It was like opening something fragile. Something wrapped for safekeeping.
The silks they dressed me in shimmered like flame. When they stepped back, they studied me in silence, then bowed lightly.
We stood bare, inches apart, the silk pooling at our feet. The altar waited behind him. I knew what it was meant for. But in this moment, there was no pressure.
Only him.
Only me.
And the space between us, narrowing, breath by breath.
Auren stepped toward me.
There was no hesitation in his stride. He closed the space between us in a quiet step, and suddenly I could feel the warmth of him, closer than anyone had ever stood, close enough that our bodies brushed, whispering against each other in the stillness.
He kissed me.
Not gently.
His mouth found mine like he'd done it a hundred times, firm and sure, his hands lifting with the same certainty to touch me. One framed the side of my jaw, his fingers a breath from trembling, the other settled low at my waist, grounding me, anchoring me to the moment.
Heat bloomed through my skin like lightning seeking purchase.
The kiss wasn't soft. It wasn't exploratory. It was fiercely possessive in a way that set fire to something deep inside me, something I hadn't even known was there. Auren kissed like someone who had no interest in surface things. He dove straight for the center.
And I—
I didn't know what to do with that.
My hands hovered, helpless for a moment, until instinct caught hold and I clutched at his sculpted arm. My fingers curled there, tense and searching, and my other hand rose to his shoulder as if I could brace myself against the storm building in my chest.
Auren pressed closer.
His lips parted slightly, just enough to pull me deeper, and my body responded before I could stop it—leaning in, opening, breath hitching in surprise at the feel of him.
It was like I had been asleep for nineteen years and someone had finally whispered my name.
When Auren finally drew back, he didn't go far.
He studied me: my face, my breath, the tremble I couldn't hide in my fingers.
"You're not what I expected," he said, his voice low and uneven at the edges.

The following review contains potentially triggering subject matter, including body shaming, coercive relationships, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. These subjects are not discussed in detail.
Ornery Owl's Review
Rating: Three out of Five Stars
The story was well-written and engaging. However, there are a few issues that prevent me from giving it five stars despite the excellent pacing and sleek style.
First, I always knock a star off any story that normalizes body shaming, diet culture, and/or food policing. It's almost as if the authors of stories with heroines who bemoan the idea of getting fat if they eat their food without engaging in some sort of self-flagellation are unaware that fat women can read and are sick and tired of being Queen-Size Boogey-Woman.
The Queen-Size Boogey-Women does sound like a pretty good band name, though.
The male characters present a master class in abusive relationships, utilizing such techniques as DARVO, emotional manipulation, gaslighting, and love bombing. Frank is controlling and stalker-ish to the point of raising every possible red flag. While Brett isn't as terrifying as Frank, he is, nonetheless, immature and manipulative. He cheated on Teresa and wants her to excuse his infidelity because he was drunk at the time.
Alex's opinions on Teresa's love life flip-flopped like a sketchy politician's stance on key issues during an election year. Additionally, Alex allowed Lacey, the waitress with whom Brett had cheated on Teresa, to babysit Teresa's vulnerable, deaf son while Teresa was on a weekend getaway with Frank. If someone did that to me, I would no longer be on speaking terms with them.
Teresa's doormat behavior irritated me. A sensible protagonist wouldn't want to be involved with either Brett or Frank. She would also realize that Alex's relationship advice was whack, and Alex really wasn't a very good friend. Nonetheless, I had sympathy for Teresa up to the point where she threw an object into a duck pond while petulantly speculating that she didn't care if a duckling choked on it. By this point, I well and truly hated every adult character in the story.
My most frequently uttered thoughts while listening to this book were as follows:
"Ugh, the cringe!" whenever Frank love-bombed Teresa.
"Ew," during every intimate encounter with Frank.
"Will someone please murder this guy already?" whenever Frank said something like, "I understand the 'women's lib' position, but when you're my wife..."
The 1970s called. They don't want this guy back.
"Bitch, please!" whenever Brett opened his mouth to try and browbeat Teresa into taking him back.
If you are looking for a fast-paced thriller with lots of tension and a few spicy scenes, you may enjoy this book.
If you are looking for independent female characters who don't need a man to complete them, this story fails the Bechdel test.
There are also points in the story that have the potential to be highly triggering to someone who has a history of domestic abuse or sexual assault, so please keep this in mind.
To sum things up:
I recommend this story to readers who enjoy high-octane thrillers and are not bothered by scenes involving potential danger in a sexualized context. The plot was exciting, moving quickly from one scene to another. The execution was smooth, and the editing was precise.
I suggest that readers with a history of domestic abuse and sexual assault be mindful of the fact that this story contains scenes involving a charming but domineering male partner coercing, gaslighting, manipulating, and, at times, threatening his victim during sexual situations.
Listening to this audiobook makes me very glad that I no longer feel I need a man to complete me. I am one of those readers with a history of abusive partnerships, including sexual assault. There were times when this story made me very uncomfortable.
Sadly, men like Frank do exist, and those they target owe it to ourselves to learn that we don't owe them anything. Not our time, not our attention, not sex, not one single thing.
