I enter the room. Hades moves like smoke as he rises from his throne and approaches me. I can feel his tension. It’s predatory and makes my heart race.

My gaze travels his whole body–his curled fists, stiff shoulders, and bowed head. His dark eyes burn with a fury hotter than any fire in the Underworld—it’s directed at me. I try to turn and run, but Hades gives a single command.

“Face me, Persephone.”

And I do. It’s as if someone places their hands on my shoulder and twists me around, slamming my back into the door. The gold handles digs into my back like a blade. I struggle against Hades’ magic.

“Look at me.”

I meet his burning gaze. I don’t expect to feel so much when I look into his eyes, but I do: anger and hurt that he didn’t listen to me when I begged him to let Eurydice go. Sadness that he would cast love aside so easily. Guilt at deceiving him…

“Tell me what you have done.”

I grit my teeth, fighting the hold he has over my body and my mind. I can feel his magic like fingers under my chin, coaxing the truth from my body. I shudder and choke on a sob.

“I helped Eurydice escape.”

I think he might be surprised by my tears, because the hold he has over me falters. I feel it pull away, and when it does, I sag against the door, breathing hard.

“Why?” he demands.

“You know why.”

“For love?” he mocks and I flinch. “Eurydice was my subject to judge. You betrayed me.”

I meet his gaze. “Because you were wrong.”

“What?” he demands, stepping closer to me. His fingers clasp my chin.

“You were wrong to refuse to let her return.”

He straightens and takes a step away, still holding my face. “Come. There is something you must see.”

He turns from me, and I feel strangely shattered inside. He leads me to a great moving tapestry.

“Show me Eurydice,” he says and a vision appears of the young woman, but something is very wrong. She’s hasn’t been reunited with Orpheus. She’s been tied to a stake near the ocean. I recognize this ritual. She’s waiting to be sacrificed.

“No….no, no, no.”

“What did you think would happen? Eurydice died, and when she rose from the dead, the people rioted. She will be back in my realm tomorrow morning. She will have died twice, her second death more disturbing and horrific than the first—and you, the Goddess of Spring, the reason for her strife.”

I twist toward him, angry.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I demand.

“I asked you to trust me, you didn’t.”

I push him because right now I hate him. He doesn’t move an inch, and I can feel something hot burning in my veins. It ignites in my core, rushing through me.

“I hate you!” I scream, and beneath my feet the tiles rattle. Great, black vines erupt from the floor and twist around the Lord of the Dead until he’s restrained. For a moment, we’re both stunned.

I have never created life.

Even though what rises from the floor looks far from alive—it is withered and black, not bright and green—not beautiful and merciful.

In the silence that follows, Hades offers a humorless chuckle, still bound by my vines.

“Who would have thought the key to your power was death?”
