I’m working on the first book in the first trilogy of a modern fantasy series I’ve been planning for years, do you have any advice for a first time writer writing her first book?

Congrats on writing your first book!

When I think back on writing my first book, what I always want to reclaim is the fun I had writing it. So, my first bit of advice would be to wall yourself and this project off from the world and have fun.

Don't feel pressure to know exactly what is going to happen. Sometimes you can't know until you start writing--that's the fun part about this, discovery.

When I get stuck in a novel, it's because I wrote something that isn't working. Take break and come back to the story a little later. You'll have clarity to move forward again.

Be aware that the process you are creating as you write is your writing process. You can refine it, but it will not change so embrace it.

Also, make a note of how you brainstorm. I am an external processor, so I have to talk things out with someone. First, it was my critique partner and now it's my editor. You might be someone who likes to write out their ideas--whatever it is, that is also part of your process and should be embraced.

The First 50 Pages by Jeff Gerke

If you write romance, or you'd like a bit of a romance plot, Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes is great. She has an outline for a standard romance plot in this book and you can overlay that with your action plot very easily.
