Happy New Year 2019
As the year ends,
A new one begins,
The shadows fall,
The world spins.
All await the festive night,
Of laughter galore and disco light,
Yet forget to pause, to muse,
Just before the stroke of midnight.
Twelve months have flown
Away with sins and good deeds,
With lessons learnt and mistakes made,
Irreparable losses and successful leads.
So, it’s time to reflect,
On what we have gained,
And to build the future,
On those strengths retained.
May the new year draw you,
To the path of glory,
A...

The Green Sanctuary
I have always wanted to live in Singapore. I love the city.
In 2015, when we chose our little apartment in the large, sprawling condominium in the east, my main criteria was a decent kitchen space (no brushing elbows with family members while cooking) and my husband’s condition was a balcony – if possible with a view of the sea. We cannot see the sea, as much as we would like to, but at least we got a good balcony.
After a couple of weeks of settling down, my parents came down for a visit. By...

Losing defeats Winning!
What does that mean? That sounds preposterous!
But often true.
Why?
Because the fear of loss defeats the will to win.
Isn’t it true that at times, we secretly wish that we do not achieve something in fear of losing it later on?
I can hear the ambitious snorting and shaking their heads in disbelief. When there is the will and the right opportunity, it is only wise to grab and run with it. Alas, if everyone was as determined and self-assured, the world would have been a different place.
Unfortu...

Majulah Singapura!
As the day dawns, I rejoice that it’s a holiday. At the same time, the next thought strikes. Why not sit back and reflect on the things I love about this country? What better day to do so than on Singapore’s National Day?
Feeling at home:

I come from a small yet cosmopolitan town of Pondicherry. I have always lived within a community which has a variety of ethnicity and race. Perhaps, that’s why, since my first visit to Singapore in 2001, I have felt, totally at ease in this country. It was...

Oh, what is her name?
“Oh, what is her name?” I asked my friend, as our walk ended. We watched her amble away, past my tower, into the next one.
“Shruti,” she replied.
“Right!” I slapped my forehead in frustration. “I was wracking my brains, when I saw her join us for the last round. I have spoken to her a couple of times, but totally forgot her name!”
“Arre! It happens to me too,” she consoled.
How often are we affected by these sudden memory lapses? Too often for comfort, I confess.
There was a time when I remem...

WHERE TO GO? WHAT TO DO?
I have been living in Singapore for almost three years now. The question that many ladies in my situation often deal with is:
Where to go on the weekend?
Okay that’s wrong English. I know that. But that’s often what we think: a literal download of our thoughts, if I may say so.
The next question, or should I say the first question, you might ask is:
What do I mean by ladies in my position?
There you got me. There might not be many readers (assuming I have some) who are in my position. 30+ – n...

Facts of Life

Love is magic,
Love is tragic,
Love is something,
We crave so bad.
Money is trouble,
Money is power,
Money is something,
We all don’t have.
Trust is rare,
Trust is elusive,
Trust is something,
We wish we had.
Friendship is caring,
Friendship is forgiving,
Friendship is something
We believe we have.
Health is precious,
Health is ignored,
Health is something,
We miss, when we don’t have.

Thai Cave Rescue – A Miracle of the Human Spirit
Until a couple of hours ago, the world awaited with bated breath as the expert divers struggled to rescue the “Wild Boars” football team and their coach, stranded 4 km underground, in a flooded cave in northern Thailand.
It was hard to guess if all of them would have made it through the water, swimming / diving (after all they had to learn how to dive too) for 3 hours, given that they were already so weak. It was even more tragic to hear that a Thai diver died while restoring the oxygen suppl...

Facebook Dilemma
How often have you heard people complaining that they waste too much time on social media, especially Facebook?
“It’s become an addiction. I cannot live without my mobile.”
“I keep scrolling up and down. I don’t know why!”
“I have to see it as soon as I hear ‘Ting’!”

During my recent trip to India, I noticed my mother has almost stopped reading books because she is often just surfing Facebook and YouTube, looking for videos on interesting veg recipes. For someone who was a voracious reader...
