Down on the Beach: 77 years ago today

Tuesday, 6th June 1944

77 years ago today, my father, along with over 350,000 troops from the UK, US, Canada, France, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Norway, New Zealand, Greece, and many other allies and commonwealth countries set out, by sea, to Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches in northern France.

Operation Overlord and the landings codenamed Operation Neptune, commonly referred to as D-Day was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The operation began the liberation of Franc...

God gave me style, and gave me grace...

Cold Play: God put a smile on your face

Where do we go? Nobody knows. I've gotta say I'm on my way down. God gave me style and gave me grace. God put a smile upon my face.

Where do we go to draw the line?

I've gotta say, I wasted all your time, oh honey honey.

Where do I go to fall from grace?

God put a smile upon your face.

When you work it out, I'm worse than you. When you work it out, when you work out where to draw the line, your guess is as good as mine.

Where do we go? Nobod...

#Dramming: Mary (Queen of Scots)

A poem from the yet unpublished book of poetry by Willy Mitchell, Dramming:Mary---

Two sisters, never to meet, both with their ginger hair

One in the South, one in the North, both with the right to heir

From the armies in tartan, from Tong to Dumbarton, destined to collide

Let the Lords of Scotland not of Westminster gather to decide

As they storm Holyrood Palace, take their victim, and push her to one side

It’s those left standing, witness the treason, and carry on with the dare

The power of ...

The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions

An innocent child growing up in an innocent home, in an innocent place, with good parents, not understanding the why, or appreciating the things to come - who knew that it was going to be this fucking hard!As my best friend often reminds me:
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions"
I realize this to be true today more than ever before - I stand by and reflect on what has passed and what could have been:

I remember the next door neighbor, a friend, I was only 8, he was just 10, and how ...

Book Review: Cold COURAGE, Extraordinary Times

"One of my benchmarks for a good book is that it should tell me something new about a subject. Although I thought that I knew something about the Trans-Antarctic Expedition, I soon found out that this wasn’t really the case, and so this book (although it is not specifically a history book) did do that for me.

It described the main characters well, and added a lot to my understanding of what they did and the conditions in which they did them. The local connection is, of course, Perce Blackborow...

Willy Mitchell is an indie author, writer, and storyteller. His first title was Operation ARGUS, and then the sequel Bikini BRAVO where a group of former Special Air Service operatives enter the dark and murky world of maskirovka and discover the lengths that some people will go for power and greed. Cold COURAGE tells the epic tale of Shackleton's 1914 Trans-Antarctic ...

The Intersection of Words, Music, and Art

I have always been fascinated about the intersection of words, music and art. My first foray into music ownership, the multi-colored vinyl's, the double albums with hidden songs and stories to tell on their covers. The lyrics of Bowie, Morrissey, Brandon. The often rebellious messages prompting us to rip up the rule book and start all over.

As I started my own writing and creative journey over 4 years ago now, I wanted to tell stories that were worthy of being told. All of the stories a collabor...

New Years Day 2021: The Lone Stag

I have always found the lone stag to be a spiritual signal of connection of some sorts, never quite working it out, but as we enter 2021, maybe this connection is now becoming clearer to me.

As a child growing up in the north of England, I had my first encounter hiking through the countryside in the Lake District and stumbling across the lone stag, or in hindsight, did he stumble across me? I was struck by not just the sheer majestic beauty of the encounter but the moment that he stopped and sta...
