2022 Christmas Scavenger Hunt Round-Robin: Dangerous Christmas Memories

Merry Christmas! Welcome to the Christmas Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt!

Here’s how it works: At each author’s blog post, you will find a question that can be answered by checking out the free Amazon preview of their book. Provide the answer at this form. Note: You must answer the questions for every author in the round-robin to be considered to win the $200 first place, $150 second place or $75 third place Amazon gift cards. These prizes are USD values. (If you are not a U.S. resident, you will get a gift card from the Amazon store for your country; however, it will be valued at these USD amounts.)

At the end of my post is a link to the next blog, who will provide a link to the next blog, etc., to the very end, creating a circle (a round-robin!) visit through all of the participating authors’ blogs.

Let me introduce you to my Christmas romantic suspense, Dangerous Christmas Memories. This story’s genesis has its roots in real life. Many years ago, I read an article about two famous musicians who’d married on a whim in Las Vegas but somehow, thought the marriage wasn’t “real.” The two went their separate ways. Fast-forward twenty years to when the groom became engaged to someone else. Because these are rich and famous people, his lawyer was getting all the paperwork together and discovered he was already married. Naturally, the two quickly divorced so he could marry his fiancée, but the story stuck with me.

I started noodling around with what could be the cause of someone forgetting they were married? What would the other spouse do if their husband or wife suddenly disappeared? The more I thought about it, the more clear the plot for Dangerous Christmas Memories became.

What are some real-life stories you think sound more like fiction?

Here’s more about the plot of Dangerous Christmas Memories:

A witness in jeopardy…

and a killer on the loose.

Hiding in witness protection is the only option for Priscilla Anderson after witnessing a murder. Then Lucas Langsdale shows up claiming to be her husband right when a hit man finds her. With partial amnesia, she has no memory of her marriage or the killer’s identity. Yet she will have to put her faith in Luc if they both want to live to see another day.

Now, it’s time to continue the scavenger hunt! Go to the book on Amazon at this link .

What is Priscilla’s profession?

When you have the answer, fill out this form and head on to the next blog!

Thank you so much for visiting! The next author on the tour is Izzy James, who is telling us all about her Christmas book The Woodcarver’s Snow-kissed Christmas. You can find it at this link. Remember, the round-robin will end on December 11th at 11:59 PM EST!

Getting to Know Jessica R. Patch

Bestselling author Jessica R. Patch recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.

What’s the weirdest way someone has died or been killed in your novels?
I used a tornado to rip up a tree and impale my villain into another tree. So…that was fun. J

Where do you get the inspiration for your plots?
Believe it or not 98% of my plot ideas come from my Bible reading. A Scripture will spark an idea or a truth and the rest just rolls on in. I often like to take a Scripture and use a villain to twist it, then unravel it as the story progresses to reveal truth.

What is one of your favorite ways to connect with readers?

I’d say my monthly newsletter but really that’s to celebrate my readers. I connect most through my Facebook author page. I post lots of fun memes, and we laugh and cut up a bunch over there.

What do you wish readers knew about the romantic suspense genre?

That just because we write about dark heinous things doesn’t mean we necessarily immerse ourselves in darkness. Yes, we research. We talk to professionals who immerse themselves in darkness every day—hello, law enforcement, we appreciate you. Jesus says in Luke 22:53 when he’s arrested, “But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.” Darkness gets its moment in romantic suspense and thrillers. It can be graphic and violent. But it’s just a moment in time until the Light of the World bursts onto the scene and real victory happens vanquishing darkness, bringing the wicked to justice!

What do readers ask you when they meet you?

How can someone so sweet write what you do? LOL. My answer: “You just met me. You don’t know I’m sweet.” Hahaha.

About Jessica R. Patch
Publishers Weekly bestselling author Jessica is known for her dry wit and signature twists whether she’s penned a romantic suspense, a cold case thriller, or a small-town romance. When she’s not getting into fictional mischief with her characters, you can find her cozy on the couch in her mid-south home reading books by some of her favorite authors, watching movies with her family, and collecting recipes to amazing dishes she’ll probably never cook.

November 2022 New Releases in Christian Fiction

More in-depth descriptions of these books can be found on the ACFW Fiction Finder website

Contemporary Romance:

Authentically, Izzy
by Pepper Basham — Dear Reader, My name is Isabelle Louisa Edgewood—Izzy, for short. I live by blue-tinted mountains, where I find contentment in fresh air and books. Oh, and coffee and tea, of course. And occasionally in being accosted by the love of my family. (You’ll understand my verb choice in the phrase later.) I dream of opening my own bookstore, but my life, particularly my romantic history, has not been the stuff of fairy tales. Which is probably why my pregnant, misled, matchmaking cousin—who, really, is more like my sister—signed me up for an online dating community. But I’ve played it safe for a long time. Maybe it’s time for me to be as brave as my favorite literary heroines. Maybe it’s time to take the adventures from the page to real life. Wish me luck. (Contemporary Romance from HarperCollins Christian Publishing (Thomas Nelson and Zondervan))

Her Christmas Redemption by Toni Shiloh — Can she find a second chance…on a town’s holiday wish list? Organizing her church’s Christmas Wishes program is the perfect start to Vivian Dupre’s new life—one without the shame of her recent mistakes. But as she grows closer to co-coordinator Michael Wood, she’s even more determined to keep her past hidden. Together they can give joy to their small town. But when Michael discovers her secret, will he be willing to grant Vivian’s holiday wish—forgiveness? (Contemporary Romance from Love Inspired (Harlequin))

Like the Wind
by Robin Lee Hatcher — Olivia Ward arrived in Bethlehem Springs alone—with no job, no home, and no money—after her manipulative ex-husband used his power and wealth to destroy everything. Six years later, the peaceful life she rebuilt is once again turned upside down when she learns that her fifteen-year-old daughter, Emma, will be coming to live with her. The reunion should be a dream come true, but years of deception have driven a wedge between them. And Emma seems more interested in an old diary she discovered than reconciliation with her mother. In this latest novel from award-winning author Robin Lee Hatcher, an antique diary, a family-fueled investigation, and unexpected feelings collide to create a promise that’s worth fighting for. (Contemporary Romance from HarperCollins Christian Publishing (Thomas Nelson and Zondervan))

Muskoka Christmas by Carolyn Miller — Staci Everton is a multi-published author of historical romances, whose Christmas Eve deadline for a new book sees her leave her Chicago home to go write while staying with her grandmother in the beautiful small town of Muskoka Shores, Canada. Staci is determined to finish her manuscript, despite the small town’s Christmas charm – and Muskoka Shores most eligible bachelor. (Contemporary Romance, ACFW QIP)

Waiting on the Tides
by Tabitha Bouldin — People are more than the sum of their mistakes. After a life lived in her older brother’s shadow, Abby Solomon is ready to take on the world—or at least a teaching position that puts her face to face with the one guy who thinks she’s nothing more than an immature nuisance. When his daughter’s mother abandoned them, Christian Johnson swore off women and the trouble they bring. No wife—no drama. Just how he likes it. But as Christian struggles to juggle his job as a cop with raising his daughter and tracking down a runaway teen, he’s forced to ask the one woman who reminds him of his wife for help. Abby is thrilled with the opportunity to show Christian that there’s more to her than what he thinks. But just as Christian begins to trust Abby, she makes a colossal mistake that threatens to ruin everything. She just wanted to be accepted. He wanted to be left alone. It’ll take a runaway teen to show them that love is not measured by a single mistake. (Contemporary Romance from Celebrate Lit Publishing)

However, she’s not about to give up on her dream. All she needs is a lucky break. But what if the only “break” involves her heart? Screenwriter Rusty Noble has one goal in mind: to make moving pictures that uplift and inspire their audiences. But his thankless job at Cooperman Studios keeps him toiling away on B-grade movies. Worse, box-office sensation Cynthia Starling—beloved by audiences and detested by those who actually know her—won’t let Rusty out of her talons. Getting to Know Hallee Bridgeman

USA Today bestselling author Hallee Bridgeman recently stopped to share some about her writing life.

Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels?
I wrote my first romantic suspense between January and March 2000. I actually had a dream New Year’s Eve and woke up from that dream about 2 a.m. and started writing. The final product was A Melody for James.

What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing?
My inbox. I get such amazing letters from readers that completely encourage and inspire me to keep writing. If you ever feel the urge to write an author—do it. You have no idea what it means.

What’s the weirdest way someone has died or been killed in your novels?
I skied a philandering woman, who was pregnant with her lover’s child, into a tree. I wanted to just divorce my characters, but a poll of my readers said they wouldn’t approve. Funny—I’ve never had anyone complain about killing off a pregnant adulteress.

Where do you get the inspiration for your plots?
I always start with my characters. Once my characters are established, then I create the plots.

About Hallee Bridgeman
Hallee is the USA Today bestselling author of several action-packed romantic suspense books and series. An Army brat turned Floridian, Hallee settled with her husband in central Kentucky, where they have raised their three children. When she’s not writing, Hallee pursues her passion for cooking, coffee, campy action movies, and regular date nights with her husband. She’s also an accomplished speaker and active member of several writing organizations.

She’s trained to save lives. He’s ordered to take them. Can extreme opposites really attract?
Medical missionary Cynthia Myers is trained to save lives. Captain Rick Norton of the Special Forces A-Team is ordered to take them. How The Dark Guest Got Its Title

One of the questions I often get is why did I call book one in The Cold War Legacy series The Dark Guest? It came from a very unlikely source.

As a reformed Presbyterian (PCA), I’ve become more acquainted with the Puritans and their writings. Titles like The Mystery of Providence and The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment have brought fresh understanding to modern-day troubles. The Banner of Truth Trust publishers have brought many of these little gems back to life through reprints.

Among those is a lovely book of Puritan prayers called The Valley of Vision. My husband and I read the book together for family devotions before we had kids. According to the back cover copy, “The strength of Puritan character and life lay in prayer and meditation.” This collection of prayers, written in poem form, are gathered “from the largely forgotten deposit of Puritan spiritual exercises, meditations and aspirations. They testify to the richness and colour of evangelical thought and language that animated vital piety in an important stream of English religious life,” as the preface states.

One of the poem-prayers, grouped under the section called “Penitence and Deprecation,” was entitled “The Dark Guest.” The poem talks about how sin becomes the dark guest within us but grace, through the cross, provides deliverance.

When I first read this prayer-poem, I thought the title would make a wonderful romantic suspense book title because of the way sin causes all sorts of chaos in our lives. When the idea for the plot came to me, I knew immediately The Dark Guest would work as the title because of the long secrets my hero and heroine uncover.

My story shows what happens when we allow sin to stay as a guest in our hearts. A guest implies we welcomed sin in, and at times, this is very true of us. If we don’t evict the “guest,” he will take up permanent residence and demand more and more of us. In my story, Violet and Henry must confront the sin in their own hearts that have taken up residence, as well as combat the long shadow sin can cast on others when sin is allowed to fester for years.

Here’s “The Dark Guest” from The Valley of Vision.

O Lord,

Bend my hands and cut them off,

for I have often struck thee with a wayward will,

when these fingers should embrace thee by faith.

I am not yet weaned from all created glory,

honour, wisdom, and esteem of others,

for I have a secret motive to eye my name in all I do.

Let me not only speak the word sin, but see the thing itself.

Give me to view a discovered sinfulness,

to know that though my sins are crucified

they are never wholly mortified.

Hatred, malice, ill-will,

vain-glory that hungers for and hunts after

man’s approval and applause,

all are crucified, forgiven,

but they rise again in my sinful heart.

O my crucified but never wholly mortified sinfulness!

O my life-long damage and daily shame!

O my indwelling and besetting sins!

O the tormenting slavery of a sinful heart!

Destroy, O God, the dark guest within

whose hidden presence makes my life a hell.

Yet though has not left me here without grace;

The cross still stands and meets my needs

in the deepest straits of the soul.

I thank thee that my remembrance of it

is like David’s sight of Goliath’s sword

which preached forth thy deliverance.

The memory of my great sins, my many temptations, my falls,

bring afresh into my mind the remembrance

of they great help, of they support from heaven,

of the great grace that saved such a wretch as I am.

There is no treasure so wonderful

as that continuous experience of thy grace toward me

which alone can subdue the risings of sin within:

Give me more of it.

Getting to Know PS Wells

Multi-published author PS Wells recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.

How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels?
For my novels, I take my readers to places they have never been to, and introduce them to history and activities they have not experienced. For instance, in my novel Chasing Sunrise, I take the reader on a HALO (High altitude, low opening) jump from an airplane, scuba diving along the mile deep wall off the coast of the island of St. Croix, and through the category 5 Hurricane Hugo. When possible, I choose a setting that is so three-dimensional that it acts as a character in the story.

What’s the weirdest way someone has died or been killed in your novels?
On the island of St. Croix is one of the most poisonous trees in the world. A small drop of the milky substance causes skin to blister. Smoke from burning the tree may cause damage to eyes and the respiratory system. The fruit is potentially fatal if eaten. So what’s an author to do with such an opportunity when the story takes place on St. Croix? While the bad guys didn’t die, our hero did leverage the manchineel tree to his advantage to render the antagonists able to be brought to justice.

How do you ensure your books are accurate?
Accuracy is so important to earn and keep the reader’s trust. I will ask experts to read through a section to check for accuracy. For instance, when the Coast Guard boards a ship from another country in The Patent, I searched for someone in that branch of the service. One evening, a group of people met at a restaurant and I found myself across from one person I had not met before. When he told me he was career Coast Guard, I asked if he would read a short section to be certain I had the setting correct. He rolled his eyes, and said yes mostly in deference to our mutual friends. Not long after, I got his comments over email. He said it was fine except for adjustments in the ranks. He ended with a comment I’ve frequently received, “You sure don’t write like a girl.” I’m thankful that one of my daughters is a critical care paramedic and I often ask medical questions. Because she understands both the medical world and authors, she is a frequent resource for writers.

Getting to Know Dani Pettrey

Multi-published author Dani Pettrey recently stopped by my newsletter and blog to share some about her writing life.

Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels?
My love for mysteries began when I read Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie when I was eight, and my enjoyment of whodunnits and suspense stories has remained strong ever since. When I was a young adult, I started reading romance novels, and while I thoroughly enjoyed them, I missed the puzzle of solving a mystery. I missed the adrenaline rush of watching the couple falling in love in the throes of danger, and seeing their love grow stronger through it. Romantic suspense combines both genres I love and wraps them up in one satisfying story.

What is your favorite spot for reading or reflecting on your current work-in-progress?
I’m at my favorite place while I type this. My happy place and sweet spot for writing or reflecting on my work-in-progress is the beach, hands down. There’s something so soothing yet inspiring being by God’s majestic creation. The rhythmic splash of the waves and the squawk of seagulls in the air still my thoughts on everything else and allow me to put my full focus on my story. I often head to the beach near my book deadlines to have a “story power week,” as I call it. I write close to double my daily word count while at the ocean. Thankfully, I have a gracious friend with a beach house, so I’m able to visit often.

What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing?
Starbucks. Actually, any coffee beverage. I’m a self-proclaimed coffee fanatic, especially when it comes to long writing days. When I need a breath of fresh air, I’ll hop in the car and open the sunroof (weather-depending) and head for a Starbucks run. The combo of a scenic ride and some strong espresso always brings me back to my desk refreshed and ready to go.

What does your family think of your writing romantic suspense?
They think we have very interesting discussions at the dinner table as I plot ways to hide a body or talk through the best way to stalk someone. Don’t worry, my kids are adults. In all honesty, they take it in stride and buy me coffee mugs that say things like: Pay no attention to my browsing history. I’m a writer, not a serial killer.
