Laura Conaway Heads Outside for Inspiration
Multi-published author Laura Conaway recently stopped by my newsletter to share about her writing life. Plus, she’s giving away one print copy of her most recent romantic suspense, Silencing the Witness, exclusively for my newsletter readers. See below for details.
What is your favorite spot for reading or reflecting on your current work-in-progress? I love to read or reflect on the stories I’m writing outside at my local park pavilion or my local library depending on the weather. Being surrounded by nature or books always gives me inspiration.
How do you connect with your characters?
I connect with my characters by either drawing from personal experience or interviewing others who’ve walked similar roads as my characters. In Silencing the Witness, I was able to relate to Avery as a school teacher because I was a former educator. In my novel, Expired Vows, some of my characters struggled with brain injuries, and I was able to talk with a friend who has a brain injury and get her perspective.
Where do you get the inspiration for your plots?
Inspiration comes when I least expect it! Sometimes I overhear a conversation and find myself thinking, “Oh, that would make a great story.” Other times, something I’m learning in Scripture that God is teaching me resonates and I know I have to write about it. In Silencing the Witness, Seth’s character was born when the school I was teaching at got a new security officer and an incident arose where fast action had to be taken. In my upcoming release, Rescued Duty, I was fascinated with how God calls us into His family through Jesus and we have brothers and sisters now that expand beyond the blood-relative relationships. I wove this truth into the story through foster care and what it means to find our forever family.
What is one of your favorite ways to connect with readers?
I love meeting readers at book events or chatting via email! I’m quite an extrovert, and it’s always encouraging to me to put a name to a face and know that the readers I pray for are real people who have their own life story.

How Kate Angelo Balances Travel With Writing

What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense?
The hardest part of writing romantic suspense is weaving together so many intricate threads: the pulse-pounding action, the slow-burn romance, the journey of faith, and the deep character growth for both the hero and heroine. Add to that the villain’s motivations, unexpected plot twists, and red herrings—it can feel like trying to create a masterpiece. Sometimes I feel like Monet, spending so much time meticulously painting the fine details of the story, scene by scene, that it’s hard to see the bigger picture until I step back.
Each element has to work in harmony, pulling readers to the edge of their seat while rooting for the characters to find love. It’s all about balance—letting the romance breathe without losing the suspenseful tension that keeps readers turning pages. That challenge is what I love most; it pushes me to dig deeper into my characters’ emotions and motivations, so their love story is as compelling as the danger they face.
When do you find time to write?
Finding time to write is definitely a balancing act, especially with all the traveling I do for work and my role as vice president of our nonprofit. Routine can be hard to maintain with so much going on, but I’ve learned to discipline myself to write and edit wherever I can, whether it’s early mornings, late nights, or even while waiting in airports. I see the word busy as “being under society’s yoke,” so I try to cut out as much of what society thinks I should do with my time. Instead, I focus on being intentional. I don’t waste much time on consumption—scrolling endlessly or getting lost in distractions—because I know that time is better spent creating. That’s been crucial for meeting deadlines and staying on top of my projects.
But don’t think I’m all work! I love spending time at the lake to relax, diving into a good book, or chatting with friends and family. At the end of the day, writing isn’t just a job—it’s my passion. And I make it a priority because those stories won’t tell themselves! Plus, I always remind myself that every small window of writing time adds up to something bigger.
What’s the weirdest way someone has died or been killed in your novels?
The weirdest death in my novels? Definitely the scene where a character falls from a hot air balloon. It was one of those moments where I could turn own fear of flying and heights into sheer terror. Suspense is all about those unexpected twists and that pulse-pounding question of, how are they going to get out of this!? The scene wasn’t just about the shock factor, though—it became a turning point in the story, forcing the characters to confront the very real threats they were facing.
What is one of your favorite ways to connect with readers?
First, I absolutely love connecting with readers in person—there’s nothing quite like meeting at book signings and meet-ups where I can hear thoughts and see smiles in real life. But my second favorite way to connect is through my newsletter. It’s more personal, like writing a letter to a friend, and I always make sure to give my newsletter subscribers the inside scoop. They get the updates first—like when my book is on sale, when a new title or cover is revealed, or when I sign a new contract. And it’s not one-sided—I encourage readers to reply directly to my emails, and I make it a point to respond as quickly as I can. It’s intimate, and I love that connection. Plus, through my newsletter, I can pray for my readers, which makes it even more special.
I also learned the hard way that my newsletter is the most reliable way to stay connected. One time, my social media got shut down, which was a huge nightmare! That experience taught me how important it is to have a direct line of communication with my readers that I control. I’m active on Facebook and Instagram and love engaging with readers there, but my newsletter is where I can really share behind-the-scenes insights and connect on a deeper level. What is absolutely essential for you to write?
For me, the essentials include coffee (always), water, and some background noise—like the hum of an airport, airplane, or coffee shop. There’s something about that ambient buzz that helps me focus. I’ve also had a lot of success with Zoom writing sprints using the Pomodoro method. Writing with others, even virtually, gives me that extra boost of accountability. Plus, breaking the writing time into sprints helps keep me productive and energized, especially on those long writing days!
What do you wish readers knew about the romantic suspense genre?
Romantic suspense isn’t just about the fast-paced action or the thrill of danger—it’s about heart lessons that run deeper than the physical side of romance. My stories focus on the truth that God created us for relationships and to serve others, especially through love and sacrifice. In my work with marriage ministry, I’ve seen firsthand how God restores broken relationships, which deeply influences how I write about love, forgiveness, and redemption.

Carmen Peone’s Write of Honor
Multi-published author Carmen Peone recently stopped by to share about her writing life.
Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels?
I wrote the Seven Tine Ranch Romance series to honor my niece, who was a victim of domestic violence and abuse, and was a victim of murdered and missing indigenous women. We lost her in 2009 at the age of 23. After years of grief, I had to write about it in some way to honor her and all the women who are victims of abuse and DV. My goal is to bring awareness and help women seek safety. For anyone who needs assistance, there is a resource page on my website.
What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense?
For this series, I had to relive the court proceedings over and over. I cried a lot, but that helped with the healing process. My grief and sorrow for her mother drove me to do what I can to help other women. People need to know that abuse of any kind is not love.
How do you research ways to kill someone for your books?
For this series, my research came from real life. Though for Renewed Hope, I had my neighbor, a former Colville Tribal Police Officer, help me with police and task force procedures to assist my heroine’s efforts to find her young kidnapped son.
How do you come up with titles for your books?
For this series, my titles are not of the normal romance genre. I based them on the stages of abuse and healing, especially through Christ. I have an in-depth explanation on my .
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels?
Since the tragedy occurred on the Colville Reservation, I set the Seven Tine Ranch on this rez. The ranch connects the series as it becomes a safe place for women in need. I included three different women from three different reservations, two in which we have family, and one because it’s the home of the Pendleton Round-Up, a special place for First Americans.
What has been most rewarding about writing romantic suspense?
The idea of bringing hope in Jesus is the most rewarding about writing the Seven Tine Ranch Romance series. In fiction, DM and abuse is not a popular read, especially in the Christian community, but the days of talking about hard topics are over. Love is bringing awareness, help, healing, and hope to those in hard situations. There is forgiveness, grace, and mercy in Jesus. We all need those three attributes. We all need His love, help, and healing.
What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing?
Easy. I saddle up and hit the trail. Or the water as I live a few miles from Lake Roosevelt. In the winter, I exercise or go for a walk. Or better, trek down to the barn and love on my horses. I also enjoy spending time with my grandkids.

Rebecca Hopewell’s Favorite Reflecting Spot
Multi-published author Rebecca Hopewell recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.
What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense?
This might sound strange, but I have a hard time putting my characters in danger! My early drafts inevitably have moments where I’ve avoided writing a direct confrontation with an obstacle or danger. I don’t even realize I’m doing it until I get a note from my editor that says something like, “Can we see this happen on the page?”
What is your favorite spot for reading or reflecting on your current work-in-progress?
There’s a green armchair by a window in our living room that used to belong to my husband’s grandparents, and it’s just wide enough for both me and our dog to snuggle on. Not only is it comfortable, but when our dog is snuggling with me, it stops me from jumping up just to do that one thing I forgot! I hand-edit my manuscript after the first draft, and this chair keeps me focused.
What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing?
Coffee. We switched to making pots of mostly decaf just so we could drink more cups without getting too wired. I try not to drink any after 12 p.m. but sometimes…
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels?
Setting is one of my very favorite things to write, so I usually choose places where I’ve spent enough time to get the feel of the area. Lake Tahoe is a few hours away, and more than once, our family has gotten stuck up there because of snowstorms. I absolutely love action/suspense stories set in the mountains, so when I came up with the idea for my first Love Inspired Suspense story, I thought Tahoe would be a perfect location. I’m just finishing up one more book set in this area, and then I’m thinking of writing about someplace new. Perhaps somewhere in the Canadian wilderness?
How do you ensure your books are accurate?
When I write characters that are outside my personal experience, I ask my friends for help! For example, High-Stakes Blizzard featured a heroine who was a nurse, so I asked my nurse friend who worked in the ER to read over the pages where the heroine was treating a wound. Danger on the Peaks features a hero who is Chinese American, so two of my Chinese American author friends gave me feedback. His family owns a ranch, so another author friend who grew up on a ranch looked over a few chapters. Basically, I tap into my community! And the internet. Of course, I’m sure I still make mistakes, but I try my best to make the books feel as real as I can.

How Cate Nolan Finds Time to Write
Multi-published author Cate Nolan recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.
Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels?
I actually started out writing historical, but I always loved reading romantic suspense. Back in 2013, the Love Inspired editors announced a “Killer Voices” contest to find new talent for Love Inspired Suspense. I had followed Emily Rodmell on social media, and I knew she loved witness protection stories. The first round of the contest just required a first page. I had an idea for a WITSEC story, so I submitted it. Emily chose me for her team, and I progressed step by step until I had to submit the full manuscript. It was a whirlwind, and then Emily called to tell me they were buying Christmas in Hiding. I’ve been writing suspense ever since because I discovered I love having that extra element to add to the story.
When do you find time to write?
My best answer to that question is one word: Summer. During the school year, I teach grades six to eight English Language Arts, so my days are pretty full. I try to manage 1,000 words a day during the school year, but summer is the time I really get to set everything aside and focus on my stories.
Where do you get the inspiration for your plots?
I literally get my ideas everywhere. My brain seems to be constantly open to suggestion. I was walking the dog with my daughter recently, and we saw something. I said, “That gives me an idea for a story.” She looked at me and said, “Let’s be honest. What doesn’t give you an idea for a story?” She’s not wrong. For example, I was walking to school one day, and I saw an abandoned veil on the ground in a child’s size, most likely lost by a young girl making her First Holy Communion. By the time I got to school that muddied veil had sparked an entire story.
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels?
Most often the location is dictated by the characters and the story I want to tell. I have to think about where that would work best. Sometimes, the setting is triggered by something I discover in my research. For example, Colorado Mountain Kidnapping is about an ex-Army Ranger who suffers from PTSD. I knew I wanted him in a remote area. In my research, I discovered Wilderness Therapy and some specific programs located in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Voila! I had my setting.
Which of your books is your favorite and why?
I chose this question, but I don’t actually have the answer. I know it’s a cliche, but that’s like trying to choose your favorite child. You love them all for different reasons. Christmas in Hiding will always be a favorite because it was my first. I fell in love with Jackson and Callie, and didn’t think I’d ever love any other characters the same. But then came Christine and Blake in Texas Witness Threat. They hold a special place in my heart because a lot of people were turned off by the snake on the cover. I’ve since learned to cover it with a “Signed by the Author” sticker.
Colorado Mountain Kidnapping is really special to me because Adam Dalton is the kind of heroic man who sacrifices his own well-being to protect the innocent. He suffers from PTSD, but he pushed through because it’s what he needs to do for Isabelle and the children. Who wouldn’t love a hero like that?
