10 Things You Might Not Know About The Missing Shield

1.
This story was originally not written to be a series, but rather to be vol 1 of the epic fantasy series titled 'The Veil Keepers Quest'. The full book is around 600k.

2.
The Missing Shield is the original title intended for the full book. It is a play on words to reflect on main character Solancei who disappears (or goes missing) during an illegal fight. Solancei is also the secret life shield (bodyguard) of Princess Iambre. Hence 'The Missing Shield'.

3.
The inspiration for the Guardian Council comes from the idea of archangels who are of high rank and each possesses an extraordinary set of skills with which they serve God/the creator.

4.
Bad guy Simarovien Zulavi was nothing but a common, unnamed soldier to begin with. He and Solancei (then also unnamed), were sparring for sport with a goodnatured slant of male/female rivalry. It was never meant to turn quite so dark.

5.
Solancei's name has developed over time. First, she was Solange, then Solarcie/Solacie, before her final name eventually found its way to the pages.

6.
The Saben-Heshép Elvern princess and seer, Nefer'Kemnebit, muscled her way into the story without me really realising what her purpose was. I wrote the first chapter about her like a true pantser - just seeing where it would take me. Who'd have thought she's the one with all the answers?

7.
Guardian Malandar was originally inspired by the character Ardeth Bay in the 1999 version of The Mummy. Mysterious and cool, and utterly dedicated to his sworn duty. I had to have me a character like that to play with.

8.
Princess Iambre's home province and city (Etruia) is inspired in name by the Etruscan civilization who flourished in Central Italy between 8th and 3rd century BC. Incidentally, the entire Realm of Ostravah is modelled losely on a pseudo-medieval roman setting with a climate much like the Italian.

9.
There are dragons in the series, they have just not come on stage yet, but they do play a very important role. One character is a little more than what they seem, but can you guess who?
I named each book for a chapter within.

10.
The cover relates to a scene where Solancei is out of luck and literally facing fire, but it is also a general reference to her struggles as she's pretty much got her back to an imaginary wall of fire most of the time.

Feeling a little nostalgic sometimes?

Well me too!

So for all of this month I thought I'd do a little '#blastFromThePast' feature where I honestly and without (much) shame, treat you all you some funny/daft/fond memories from my past.

Each day I'll post a new memory linked to a photo and I'd love for you to head on over to my official FB page and share your moments too.

Seriously please do! Don't leave me hanging!😄

Come play my fantasy game?

Do you remember as a kid when you used to read those fantasy books where you had to weave your own way through the adventure, choosing what option to take and where to go? You know the kind of books that usually ended up with you being trapped in a dark hole mining sapphire to pay the Dwarves and with no way out?

Well the other week I got to thinking that I kinda miss those quirky little stories and the surprise twist and turns, so based loosely on the events of my first book (A Change of Rules), I set out to make my own mini-game.

Wanna play?
Do you wanna see what it's like to wear the boots of a bodyguard sworn to protect the life of a real princess?

If so, then prepare to get out of bed, strap on your best old combat gear and grab your practice sword, because today you're going to win an illegal duel... Or are you?

In this game, only time - and perhaps chance - will tell how the story ends. To enter the Realm of Ostravah, just follow the link. Good luck!
