Small Acts of Compassion

Have you ever contemplated the impact you make on the world?

That is a key theme in one of my favorite movies, It’s a Wonderful Life. I love watching Clarence, an angel desperately trying to earn his wings, show down-and-out George Bailey the impact to the community and to his loved ones had he never been born.

The effect we make is more impactful than most of us imagine. Mother Teresa states this eloquently: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to cause many ripples.”

This ripple effect is touched upon in Cloud Whispers when Katie wonders how she can make a difference through her seemingly normal life. Below is an excerpt of Katie discussing this topic with her spirit guides:

“Cause and effect on an individual level triggers downstream cause and effect,” Black Eagle said. “Every action causes an infinite number of reactions and each becomes a thread in the tapestry of the universe.”

As Katie contemplated, Black Eagle drew a viewing square. She lifted her head to look at the screen, surprised to see scenes from her own life. The little girl whose name she’d drawn from the Angel Tree, and that girl’s joyful Christmas morning as she opened her stocking and the gifts Katie had purchased.

Black Eagle touched a finger to the screen and it froze on a clip of the girl’s parents. “Your gift not only touched Julia, but her parents, Jack and Ellen, too,” Black Eagle said. Katie leaned in to get a closer look at them. Both were smiling. Ellen’s hand rested on Jack’s arm as he gazed up at her with caring eyes. “Julia’s parents had both been laid off from their jobs. They had been stressed about Christmas and fighting regularly.” He tipped his head toward the screen. “That Christmas gave Ellen and Jack some much needed peace, joy, and hope. Jack found a job the week after Christmas, and Ellen, two months later. As Julia grew, her parents taught her the importance of giving back.” Black Eagle made a fist. When he opened it, a small river stone sat on the palm of his hand. “Good deeds are like skipping pebbles in a pond. It’s not just the single ripple that is affected, but the multiple rings radiating outward, bumping into one another and intersecting, all a part of the downstream impacts from that one small pebble.”

Katie gaped at Black Eagle in amazement. She’d never thought of it like that or considered the many ripples that occurred from a simple benevolent act.

Black Eagle’s smile expanded. “We’re just getting started.” He waved a hand in front of the screen and new clips streamed. Ellen and Jack selecting names from an Angel Tree, and as Julia got older, her participation in the Christmas giving. A homeless man Katie had given money to used the money to buy a warm meal. While dining, the man met the restaurant’s owner who hired him on the spot and helped him get back on his feet. Katie’s heart tugged watching the formerly homeless man reunite with his adult son.

The next scene showed the son visiting an older woman. Posie tapped the screen and Katie studied the clip of him hugging a woman with the same robin-blue eyes. “Not only did Donnie’s dad get his life back on track, but Donnie progressed as well,” Posie said. “He had blamed his mother for his father’s situation, and for many years, Donnie had been estranged from both of his parents. Through his father’s growth, Donnie put aside his past hostilities and fostered new relationships with his father and his mother.”

The episodes of Katie’s life flew by like images on a movie screen. A kind word, a smile, a helping hand. Gifts, large and small, material and intangible, all influencing lives. Examples continued to stream, one after the other depicting cause and effect and the countless succeeding impacts. Katie watched as Donnie’s young children met their grandpa, and later their grandma, for the very first time. She saw Julia, the young girl from the Angel tree, go to college and becoming a teacher. An amazing, extraordinary teacher who worked in a Title 1 school. Over the years, Julia touched the lives of hundreds of low-income students. Observing the downstream impacts in each of those children’s lives, and the lives they subsequently touched, was nothing short of mind-boggling. One saved lives after a boating accident. Another became a doctor, also saving lives. But what really struck Katie was the impact from those who led seemingly ordinary lives. Their simple, day-to-day acts—a smile, words of encouragement, a kind gesture—in turn caused another positive action which like ripples in the pond, caused another and then another, until they all merged into bigger turning points in the lives of the recipients. That was how little ‘ol her could make a difference. Perhaps it wasn’t the grand gestures, but instead, the small acts of compassion that made the greatest impact in people’s lives, and thus generated the greatest contribution to the collective.

Celebrating Kindness

As our country’s independence is celebrated through parades and backyard barbeques, I’m taking a moment to reflect on what I love the most about our country. I’m looking beyond our deep ideological divides to the people, because, the soul of a nation is comprised of the people who live there.

To this day, our country is a melting pot, a blessed blend of nationalities, cultures, and religions. The term ‘melting pot’ was derived from E Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One,) the phrase that became the official seal of our new nation.

These days, if you focus exclusively on the news, we appear to be a country divided. Headlines are of political animosity, domestic crises, and international tensions. But if you look beyond the television to your neighbors, your schools, and your community, you’ll find a growing trend of kindness and compassion.

As I celebrate our nation’s independence, I’m also celebrating our shared humanity. This afternoon as I spend time with family and friends and this evening as I celebrate in my community, I’m spreading love and kindness. It doesn’t matter whether the people around me believe what I believe; I’m celebrating our freedom to have differences and our ability to love each other regardless.

I invite you to join me in choosing kindness over that which divides us. There’s the potential for kindness in each and every encounter—a smile, a kind word, a kind deed. Your single act of kindness could make all the difference.

Kindness matters.

Kindness spreads.

“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees—” Amelia Earhart

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate kindness!

Spiritual Themes in Cloud Whispers

My goal as an author is to write fictional stories that not only entertain but also inspire and captivate by incorporating thought-provoking concepts. While my novels include plenty of conflict and family drama, in the end, you’ll always find a happy ending! My philosophy aligns with this quote from Jim Henson: “Life’s like a movie; write your own ending, keep believing, keep pretending...”

In my work-in-progress novel, Nora’s Promise, spiritual themes include the power of now and animal telepathy & compassion. In Cloud Whispers, the overarching theme relates to the Law of Attraction, however, other new-age topics are included as well. Below are some Cloud Whispers Book Club questions for your thought-provoking pleasure!

Cloud Whispers Reading Group Guide Excerpt:

• Do you think Katie was in the clouds in an alternate dimension or was it all in her head?
• Bear telepathically communicated with Katie, and she and Pan had a particularly close relationship. Do you think dogs, cats, and other animals, are more intuitive than humans?
• Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not?
• Some people believe that dream consciousness is every bit as real as waking consciousness but it takes place in a different dimension. What do you think?
• There is a growing field of energy healing that includes services similar to those offered by Simone. Do you believe in this healing modality? Why or why not?
• An overhead cloud whispers to Katie, “The power to manifest your desires comes from within.” Do you believe in this power? Why or why not?

A full list of Reading Group Guide questions can be found at the end of Cloud Whispers and on my website at: my link text.

My Ban on News

“I believe if you just go by the nightly news, your faith in all mankind would be the first thing you lose.”

I love this line from Luke Bryan’s recent hit song, “Most People Are Good.” There’s a lot of positivity in our world, yet the media chooses to spotlight doom and gloom.

Years ago, I had the honor of studying under the late Dr. David Simon, co-founder of The Chopra Center. One of the many things I learned from him was that everything we ingest affects our mind, body, and spirit.

Most of us are aware that the food we consume impacts our bodies, either positively or negatively. But have you ever thought about the influence of what you watch on television, read on social media, or hear in conversations from those around you?

I pondered Dr. Simon’s wisdom, especially when I turned on the nightly news. Watching murder and mayhem, political combat and corruption, wide-spread disease and natural disasters, made me feel dark, depressed, and hopeless. There’s so much goodness and kindness that occurs in our communities and our world, but according to the media, that’s not what sells.

As I aligned with my internal wisdom, I realized that listening to this negativity day in and day out clouded my vision of the world…so, I implemented a ban on news.

I’ve gotten a lot of grief over my stance. I’ve been called naïve and uncultured, ignorant and uninformed. But I’ve held steadfast because watching the news makes me feel ugly inside. I have no need to hear about the latest fight between the White House and Congress. I can manage just fine without listening to mud-slinging by the Democrats and Republicans. When disaster strikes and wars break out, I don’t need to hear every minute detail.

I’m not completely in the dark. I’m aware, on a macro level, of what’s going on in the world. When I surf the net or log onto Facebook, I see the day’s headlines. It keeps me connected enough to say a prayer and to send positive energy toward those in need. Afterward, I redirect my attention to something positive.

If there was a happy news channel, I would rethink my stance. Until then, I’ll keep feeding my soul through Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, and I’ll continue to choose peace and joy over destruction and devastation.

The Law of Attraction in Cloud Whispers

These days most people have heard of the Law of Attraction, the concept that we attract actions and experiences into our lives through our thoughts and vibrations. The Law of Attraction is built on the belief that the universe and everything in it is vibratory.

Like attracts like. If you put out positive vibrations, you’ll attract positivity into your life. If your thoughts and actions are negative, that’s what you’ll receive in return.

Sounds easy…right?

But if this is true, then why don’t we have everything we want? This question is contemplated in my new novel, Cloud Whispers:

“I don’t understand,” Katie said, wiping cloud wisps from her arm. “If it’s that easy, how come we can’t think things into being on Earth?”

“The vibrational concept works the same way on Earth,” Posie said. “You can think things into being.”

“Then how come everyone doesn’t have everything they want on Earth?” she asked, still not getting it.

“Sometimes it takes longer on Earth,” Black Eagle acknowledged. “It requires a greater faith, but it still works. That is, if you can overcome the greatest obstacle down there,” he said, waving a hand toward the blue-green ball rotating beneath them.

Katie’s brows knitted together. “What’s the greatest obstacle?”

“The mind.” Black Eagle tapped his index and middle finger on his temple.

Now she was completely confused. Her guides had just explained that she could think things into being. If that was the case, how could her mind be the greatest obstacle?

“I’ll show you.” Black Eagle rubbed his hands together as his expression turned gleeful. “Chair,” he said, snapping his fingers together.

A chair appeared in front of him.

“I ask for it and it’s delivered. Now granted, the pure love and positivity up here result in quicker manifestation of desires, but on Earth humans could get things a lot faster if they didn’t over think everything.” Black Eagle’s lips curled into an impish grin. “You see, I just thought ‘chair.’ ‘I need a chair.’ I didn’t flip-flop, consider whether I deserved the chair, if I could afford the chair, or if a loveseat would really be better.” He glanced at his backside. “I didn’t wonder if this particular chair would make my butt look big.”

Katie snickered, thinking about the many times she’d wondered the same thing about a dress or a pair of jeans.

“I simply asked for a chair and got a chair. When you ask for something the universe begins its work to deliver that request to you. If you start questioning it, the universe hears, ‘I don’t know if I want this,’ ‘I might not really need this,’ or ‘I don’t deserve this,’ Black Eagle said. “You must be clear and consistent with your request and believe it will manifest. If you do so, you will receive. It’s universal law.”

Peace on Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd with activities and events held around the globe. Earth Day began in 1970 when peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and to honor the concept of peace. Today’s blog pays tribute to the first Earth Day by focusing on peaceful ways to honor our planet.

We can pay tribute to Mother Earth through peaceful thoughts and actions. If you buy into the notion that the Earth is vibrational, that like attracts like, it doesn’t take a huge leap of faith to believe that kind thoughts benefit our planet. Today, I will be mindful of my thoughts. I will ensure that they are kind, compassionate, and loving.

Today, I will also honor the Earth through my actions. Instead of putting chemicals on my lawn, I’m going to love it the way it is. I will fondly remember the dandelion bouquet my daughter picked for me when she was a child. Instead of worrying about dandelion seeds creating more weeds, I’m going to pick one, make a wish, and blow the seeds into the wind.

Inner peace cultivates love. Today I will consciously direct love and light to our beautiful Earth. I will also offer love and light to all life forms who reside on our planet because we are all connected.

I invite you to join me in contributing peaceful thoughts and actions…today, tomorrow, and throughout the year. What better way to honor and respect the beautiful, intelligent, life-sustaining planet we call Earth?

“You are the source of all change on the planet. If you tend to your internal peace, you’re tending to peace on earth.” – Panache Desai

Inspiration for Cloud Whispers

The daughter she gave away. The family she always wanted. The journey to redefine her fate….

I was inspired to write Cloud Whispers after experiencing a devastating motorcycle accident. One beautiful June afternoon, my husband and I were riding our motorcycle when a car appeared out of nowhere, barreling toward us. With a steady stream of traffic on all sides, there was nowhere to go to avoid collision. Panic assailed me as the car smashed into our motorcycle. My husband maneuvered the bike to avoid a T-bone hit, undoubtedly saving our lives. Even so, my right foot and leg sustained major injuries.

After every storm, there’s a rainbow. While recovering from the accident, I received ongoing bursts of story inspiration. Over the next several months, the plot for Cloud Whispers sprang to life.
After surviving this motorcycle accident and a house fire during the same time span, I transformed my life by examining old patterns, expectations, and beliefs and learned to tap into my intuition and creative abilities. This quest led me to study energy healing and become a Reiki Master. I also studied at the renowned Chopra Center, earning certification as a Primordial Sound Meditation instructor.

In Cloud Whispers, Katie Callahan is burdened with a long-held secret. When a twist of fate brings a second chance at motherhood, she knows the time has come to reveal the truth to her husband. She’s caught between joy and fear of her husband’s rejection of another man’s child. On the cusp of admitting the events of her past, she experiences a near-fatal motorcycle accident.

With her body trapped in a coma, Katie finds herself in the dreamlike space between Earth and the afterlife. Guided by her spirit guides and the soul of her beloved dog, she learns the life-changing power of intention and self-transformation. From her ethereal vantage-point, she watches as her loved ones work together to resolve long-held contentions and to connect the pieces of their broken hearts. Katie's only chance to transform her world means completing an impossible journey back to life. Back on Earth, her newfound knowledge must transcend time and space to help Katie achieve her greatest wish of all.

Cloud Whispers is a mind-expanding women’s fiction novel with a strong spiritual message. If you like headstrong heroines, heartwarming stories of family and forgiveness, and new age concepts, then you’ll love this empowering tale.

I Have All The Time in The World!

Don’t run to yoga or meditation class! This was the one and only rule I was given as a student at the Chopra Center. I was studying at the hallowed institution created by Deepak Chopra and David Simon, learning ancient meditation, yoga, and Ayurveda wisdom…and that was the only rule? Yet over the course of my studies, I came to fully appreciate the significance.

The purpose of meditation and yoga is to create stillness in your mind and your body. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes yoga as “the progressive quieting of the fluctuations of the mind.” Thus, sprinting to class, arriving harried and breathless, is a complete contradiction.

As my studies continued, I had an epiphany. When I acted as if I had all the time in the world, that became my reality. As that became my reality, I became less stressed. After this realization, I began to apply this philosophy in my daily life and experienced the same results.

How does one go about creating a no-rush approach in today’s fast-paced world? The first step is making the choice. Do you want to approach life at your own pace or as the Bangles quipped in their 80’s pop song, Manic Monday, “Got to be to work by nine, and if I had an airplane, I still couldn't make it on time.”

If you choose the calm approach, I’ve found three keys to making it happen:

Mindset – Live the mantra: “I have all the time in the world!”

Prioritization – Understand what’s most important to you.

Execution – Align your time with your priorities.

Mindset

Having the right mindset simply means to think—and believe—you have plenty of time. I used to rush around too. Then I made a conscious decision to stop the madness. These days, regardless of where I’m going or what the clock says, I tell myself, “I have all the time in the world.” Ever since, I have had all the time I need…and I’ve been less stressed to boot!

Prioritization

Know what’s most important to you. If you can’t spout off your priorities, take a moment to make a list. For simplicity, start at a high level. After you’ve created your mental or written list, be mindful of your priorities. Thinking about what you want plays a critical role. Keeping these priorities in mind will ensure you focus on them.

Execution

Align your priorities with your time. It’s really that simple. With awareness and planning, you can focus your energies on those things that are most important to you.

We all have the same 24 hours in every day. How we go about using that time makes all the difference. . . I have all the time in the world!
