Suspense Magazine names Sins of the Mother Best of 2020
The editors and readers of Suspense Magazine have selected August Norman’s second thriller, SINS OF THE MOTHER: A Caitlin Bergman Novel (Crooked Lane Books, Hardcover, Ebook, Audiobook), as one of the Best of 2020 books in the Thriller category.
If you’re not already following Suspense Magazine, either on social media or their website (www.suspensemagazine.com), check them out before the end of the year for the latest in suspense, mystery, horror, and thriller fiction…plus that Best Of list.
August Norman returns with the second thrilling Caitlin Bergman novel, perfect for fans of Julia Keller, Tess Gerritsen, and Michael Koryta.
Caitlin went in search of her mother…but what she found may set the world on fire.
Caitlin Bergman’s mother is dead. That’s what the award-winning journalist has told everyone for the past forty years. Easier to lie than explain how Maya abandoned her only daughter before dropping off the map forever.
But when a rural sheriff invites Caitlin to the woods of coastal Oregon to identify her mother’s remains, Caitlin drops everything to face the woman she’s spent a lifetime hating. Unfortunately, the body–abandoned on the land of a reclusive cult, the Daughters of God–was left faceless. Instead, Caitlin finds the diary of a woman obsessed with the end of the world, one that hints the cult’s spiritual leader knows the identity of Caitlin’s real father. She’s not the only one looking for clues in her mother’s writing. Johnny Larsen, a violent white supremacist whose family runs the county, thinks the Daughters of God kidnapped his teen-aged daughter–and will do anything to get her back.
At the top of a hill, an army of women wait for the end of days. In the town below, the Larsens plot to purify their county. Caught in the middle, Caitlin must decide which is more important–learning the truth about her past, or saving Mama Maya’s chosen daughters from the end of the world.

Matt Coyle from Crime Corner Interviews August Norman
Matt Coyle, award-winning author of the Rick Cahill series and host of Crime Corner, interviewed August Norman on the Authors on the Air Radio network for the release of SINS OF THE MOTHER.
The live interview, now available anywhere the Authors on the Air Radio network shows can be downloaded as podcasts, covered August’s road to publication, his creation of investigative journalist Caitlin Bergman, and how and why now was the right time to put her up against a doomsday cult in the mountains of coastal Oregon. Matt and August also went into what it takes to build a crime fiction series, and the need to damage their characters enough to make them believable.
ABOUT MATT COYLE
Matt Coyle is the author of the best-selling Rick Cahill crime novels. He knew he wanted to be a crime writer when he was fourteen and his father gave him the simple art of murder by Raymond Chandler. He graduated with a degree in English from University of California at Santa Barbara. His foray into crime fiction was delayed for thirty years as he spent time managing a restaurant, selling golf clubs for various golf companies, and in national sales for a sports licensing company.
Writing at night for over a decade his debut novel, Yesterday’s Echo, was finally published in 2013. The wait was almost worth it as it won the Anthony Award for Best First Novel, the San Diego Book Award for Best Mystery, the Ben Franklin Award for Best New Voice in Fiction.
Matt’s second book in the Rick Cahill series, Night Tremors, was a Bookreporter.com Reviewers’ Favorite Book of 2015 and was an Anthony, Shamus, and Lefty Award finalist.
Dark Fissures (Cahill #3) was a finalist for the Macavity and Lefty awards and was a 2016 Top Pick for Bookreporter.com.
Blood Truth (Cahill #4) was a Shamus finalist, Lefty Award finalist, a Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Silver Award winner for Thriller/Suspense, and a top pick by Bookreporter.com for Best Mysteries of 2017.
Wrong Light (Cahill #5) was a Lefty Award finalist, a San Diego Book Award finalist and was nominated for a Shamus Award. It was also a top pick by Bookreporter.com for Best Mysteries of 2018.
Lost Tomorrows (Cahill #6) was a winner of the Shamus Award and the Lefty Award for Best Mystery.
Blind Vigil (Cahill #7), Matt’s upcoming book, will be available December 1st, 2020.
His short story, The #2 Pencil, was a finalist for a Derringer and Macavity Award.
Matt lives in San Diego with his yellow Lab, Angus, where he is writing his eighth crime novel.
