What is erotica? And why is it different from porn?

Hello Everyone,

Rather than ease into a discussion, I'll figure I'll just jump right in!

The official definition of erotica from dictionary.com is literature or art dealing with sexual love.

I have to say, I agree.

Erotica doesn't have a specific look, sound, feel. It could be a picture of a breast. A short poem detailing a lover's longing. An intimate photo of a couple in bed, pre- or post-coitus. It's a short story, a novella, a novel, or a movie like 9 1/2 Weeks.

Or erotica could be the most powerful tool of them all: your imagination.

But there is a clear difference between erotica and porn. They are not the same. The two genres have obvious similarities: nude bodies, sexual positions, feelings of arousal to those who view it. But here is where the similarities stop: porn is not an art form and no pornographic actor will contest that fact. Erotica is considered to be artistic and has extra components to it such as emotion. Erotica tells a story; pornography is not very descriptive. Pornography is geared towards men while erotica is geared to both sexes. Erotica could be real whereas porn is most definitely not.

Still not convinced? Here's some food for thought: Would the Song of Solomon, a book in the Bible that details an erotic and sensual tale between two lovers, be considered pornographic or erotica?

Still with me, here?

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder; I feel the saying can also apply to erotica. Erotica is in the eye of the beholder. What may be considered erotica to one, may be porn to another and vice-versa.

So let me open this up for discussion...what are your thoughts? What do you consider to be porn? What do you consider to be erotica?

Updates galores...

Those who follow me on my blog will know I say this term a lot...updates galores. I know it's not proper and it's grammatically incorrect. I like to be silly so take it.

So the big question is when is the next book coming out? That's a good question. I'm sure you want an answer from me, lol. I've been hinting at a follow-up to The Erotic Intoxication, Vol. I: Bad Girls. The working title is All Tied Up, an ode to my increasing fascination with BDSM.

But you don't care about all those details, you want to know when the book is going to be out? Honestly, I don't know. Yes, I'm working on it. Yes, it's completed. Yes, it's being edited. And yes, it's going to be rewritten. My deadline was March, then it was April, then it was May and now I'm not making any promises. Will it be this year? Yes. Will it be this summer? Yes. But when? I don't know.

I will put out another short (about 5K words or so) very soon to tie you over. I'm debating between it being free or being very cheap. I'm leaning towards very cheap. But you won't have to wait very long for that one. Now that I can promise.

I hope you're doing wonderful and great. Stay beautiful, stay blessed, but remain sexy!

xoxoxo

It has a title...

My new short story...

The initials are S&M. I had to. I had to play on what is becoming my favorite subject.

As you can tell, the story is done. Finito. Done.

I need to give you something to tie you over since I'm still working on The Erotic Intoxication, Vol II. That one also has a working title. It was All Tied Up but I'm playing around with it.

Book cover will debut later this week.

Story will be available soon after.

It'll cost more than The Train Ride and less than The Erotic Intoxication, Vol I: Bad Girls. I told you it'll be cheap.

I hope you're doing fabulous and great.

S&M Sneak Peek

Scott softly sang along to Heavy Love Affair. Mariana watched from the kitchen table until Scott spotted her. He walked over to her and grabbed her hand. “Let’s dance.”

Mariana quickly swallowed her soybeans. “Dance?

“You know it’s that thing where you put your feet together and sometimes wiggle your butt to the beat?” Scott led her to an open area. He pulled her close and their bodies softly swayed to the mid-tempo beat as the Bose stereo blared out the sound. He was a surprisingly good dancer. He softly gyrated against Mariana and caressed her back. She was becoming aroused again.

Suddenly the music ended and Mariana once again felt uncomfortable. Was Scott just being polite to her? Maybe he just wanted to dance with her, feed her and then kick her out of his house. Maybe Mariana broke a code by sleeping in his bed. Whatever the reason, Mariana was uneasy being in Scott's home. How should she address him? Her boss? Her new boyfriend? Her lover? All of the above?

“Let’s eat,” Scott walked back over to the kitchen and gathered the plates. Mariana sat back down at her seat and waited for Scott, who was watching her facial expressions from the kitchen. “You look serious," Scott commented as he served Mariana her plate, "you should be smiling. You just had sex."

Mariana broke into a half-grin. "I'm content."

"Ooh, content?" Scott sat across from Mariana and placed the napkin on his lap. "That's a new one."

"I'm sure you're well aware of how you performed in bed."

"You know, ever since I read an article about women faking it in bed, I really don't know what to believe." Scott's smile was warm and welcoming.

"Oh, I wasn't faking it." Mariana figured she was going to be sore for at least a week.

"I didn't think you were," Scott winked. He motioned to her food. "It's not going to eat itself. Enjoy."

Mariana took a bite of the lemon chicken. It was orgasmic. A man who knew how to cook and fuck. It was no wonder he hired a maid. For all of Scott’s qualities, he was a slob. “Delicious.”

“Thank you,” he sipped his wine.

“Um…” Mariana didn’t know where to begin. There was something about the first sex session that intrigued her.

Scott smiled. “Don’t be shy.”

Mariana felt so silly. Her blushed cheeks must’ve been a nice shade of embarrassing pink. She wanted to crawl under the table and hide. “That hair-pulling and ass-slapping thing you did? What was that?”

Scott slapped Mariana's ass as punishment for going through his shit. He didn't realize the actions just released Mariana's inner kink. “Did you like it?”

Mariana was embarrassed to say she did. She looked away from Scott and smiled. “Yes.”

“It’s a form of BDSM.” He said it in such a calm manner as if everyone knew about it.

Mariana wasn't familiar with that term.“BD what?”

“BDSM – Bondage, Dominance/Discipline, Submission/Sadist, and Masochism. You know it as S&M but there’s more to it than just rope, whips, and leather. It's a mental thing. You start fucking someone with their mind then you move onto their body.”

“Oh,” Mariana felt her naïveté was in full force. “I like it.”

“You liked it a lot,” Scott's smile had a bit of a smirk in it. Every slap on her ass he gave her, Mariana screamed in pleasure. She was good for his ego.

The next question on Mariana’s tongue was to ask Scott if he could teach her some more but she knew she was crossing a boundary. It was bad enough she fucked her boss and would have to pretend nothing ever happened. She would have to be content with the few hours of bliss they shared.

Some call me a workaholic...maybe that's not entirely false.

I have a goal this year on how many titles I want to put out. I'm not saying the number for fear you, the reader, might expect me to hit that number and me, the author, will fail to live up to expectations.

The number is doable. I just need to buckle down and get to it.

The great news is that not all of the stories are of the erotica nature. I do love to write erotica but it's not my main thing. I'm more into romance and storytelling. I like a romance title that just happens to have some really good sexually explicit scenes in them. Boy meets Girl, Boy fucks Girl, Boy gets off and Girl wonders what the hell just happened here because she could've had a V-8 is so played out.

You want emotion and intensity. You want passion, you want the visualization, you want the 'will they or won't they and if they do, how will they?' type of story. If you just wanted to get your jollies off, you wouldn't be reading any of my titles. Well, maybe you would.

S&M will be on sale this week. An announcement will be made when it finally goes on sale. I've decided on a price. I'm not telling you; you'll just see it. It's affordable. In fact, it's like a song on iTunes affordable. Well, maybe.

And there you have it,

You know I had a nice and pretty blog post all typed up...

And somehow a computer ate it. Specifically one of the computers I use at work. I don't know what happened to it. I'm so distressed *sad panda face*

No, not really. But it's fun to be dramatic for the sake of being dramatic.

So, the first week sales of S&M are doing pretty well. In fact, the first week sales of S&M are much higher than The Erotic Intoxication. Maybe it's the price? Or my relentless promotion nonstop? Or maybe you just like reading what I have to write? Any or all of the above, it's worked in my favor. I thank you.

I am working on a title to be released next month. To those who are on my Facebook page or follow me on twitter, this is the 'big' announcement. Since I just released S&M almost a week ago and June is ending in a little over two weeks, I have my work cut out for me. What's the title? Not sure yet. Is it a follow-up to S&M? That I can definitely tell you 'not yet.' (Take that for what it's worth.)

This next title, I'm going back to my roots - romance. As I perfect my writing more, I'm going back to storytelling. I like writing erotica but I love writing romance more. Maybe it's erotic romance? Who knows? All I do know is that I enjoy it very much. I hope you will too.

The life of a writer...everyday I'm hustling...
