Worldbuilding – The Wow Factor
[image error]
I’ve built a few worlds over the years. A domain of dragons, a vertical realm where even the oceans are tipped on end, a cosmos made entirely of string. As a writer of fantasy and science fiction novels, it’s what I do.
Now, for the first time, I’m going to share some of the techniques I use to conjure up strange environments and populate them with creatures you won’t find on any Earthly safari, in my 90-minute writing workshop Worldbuilding – The Wow Factor.

Cinefex 164 on the Prowl
[image error]
The April issue of Cinefex is just out and stalking newsstands everywhere. I’ve got two articles in Cinefex 164, each with its own uniquely beastly vibe.
Beast of the Apocalypse is my in-depth report on the effects of Hellboy. In covering this new R-rated take on Mike Mignola’s comic book icon, I interviewed visual effects supervisor Steve Begg and the talented teams at Worldwide FX, Mr. X, Rhythm & Hues, Goodbye Kansas and RISE. I also had the great pleasure of speaking with production desi...

Interview with the Gumshoe – Guest Blog for Civilian Reader
[image error]
I recently had the pleasure of appearing as a guest blogger at Civilian Reader, a rather splendid website run by veteran reviewer Stefan.
Pondering what to write about, I decided to share a strange experience I had the other day, when I was accosted by a fictional character – none other than the gumshoe hero of my new novel String City. I’ve recounted our entire conversation on Stefan’s blog. Here’s a brief extract:
GUMSHOE: What in the name of Hades do you think you’re playing at?

Publication Day
Publication days are weird. You think copies of your new book should start raining down out of the sky or something. Of course, that never hap… wait, what?

String City – Out Now
[image error]
Read the new fantasy detective novel by Graham Edwards, now available from Solaris Books.
It’s a tough job being a gumshoe in an interdimensional city full of gods, living concepts and weirder things. Good job I’m a stringwalker, able to jump between realities.
It started when I was hired to investigate an explosion at a casino. A simple heist, I thought, but it turned into a race to stop the apocalypse. So I rolled the dice, and now I’m up against the ancient Greek Titans, an interdimension...

Street of Plenty — A String City Snapshot
[image error]
Most of the establishments in String City’s financial quarter suffered crippling losses during the recent city-wide depression. The only institution left unscathed on the legendary Street of Plenty is the Birdhouse, famous for housing the most secure vault in the cosmos.
[image error]As the financial crisis deepens, reports are emerging of unidentified hooded figures lurking near the Birdhouse. Luckily, the vault is buried deep underground and guaranteed against all known forms of assault. As long as nob...

February Famigeration
[image error]
Oh boy, I’ve left it until the last minute to write my February blog. I could blame the ridiculous brevity of the month – I mean, just 28 days, really, how’s a fellow supposed to get everything done? On the other hand, I’ve seen a few Februaries come and go over the years, so I should be getting the hang of them by now.
First up, let’s explain the peculiar title of this month’s blog. “Famigeration” is another glorious word gleaned from The Phrontistery. It means “the bringing of news from ab...

Cinefex 163 is Buzzing
[image error]
We just sent Cinefex 163 out into the world – hurray! Our February 2019 issue leads with Joe Fordham’s spectacular article on Alita: Battle Angel; Joe also delivers ground-shaking coverage of Mortal Engines, while the practically perfect Jody Duncan whisks you magically behind the scenes on Mary Poppins Returns.
My contribution to Cinefex 163 is a super-sized report on the making of Bumblebee. Full disclosure – my personal interest in the Transformers franchise waned roughly halfway through...

Scrimshaw Bridge — A String City Snapshot
[image error]
The Scrimshaw Bridge spans two rivers — the Lethe and the Styx — and was carved using ivory mined from Big Tusk Mountain. Because ivory has the power to amplify bad dreams, traders have long used the bridge to import despair from the Unknown Worlds. The adjacent Long Horn Bridge — once the conduit for String City’s supplies of inspiration — collapsed many years ago.
[image error]Every year, members of the Campaign for Hope gather on the Scrimshaw Bridge to lobby for its demolition. Thanks to the bridge’s...
