Yoga and the Middle Aged Woman
I’ve decided to take up yoga again. Most of you already know that I’m pretty athletic. I play racquetball a lot and I lift weights once a week. Stretching, however, is not part of my routine. I make half hearted attempts at it, but really, I’m happier sitting in a sauna which isn’t the same thing at all. Sadly, sciatic pain and other tight muscles have convinced me that it’s time to try it again. Once long ago, I taught yoga classes, so it shouldn’t be that hard to get back into it, right? Guess what I discovered.

A strong core from weight lifting is not the same thing as abs of steel. And neither seems to be much help when I try to get into pigeon pose.
Pigeon pose? How about we call that old woman cannot tie herself into a knot pose?
I’ve done this for 3 days, 20 minutes each time. I’ve seen real pain reduction immediately. Well, not immediately. After I stop doing yoga, I feel much better.
My intro class was too easy. What was I thinking?
Answer: All of the above EXCEPT 5 My intro class was way too hard. What was I thinking? I have yet to complete it. My flexibility is virtually non-existent, but even a couple days of half hearted yoga has made a real difference. The sciatic pain is almost gone. True, I’m moaning and groaning as I do the yoga, but it really has been a great benefit to me. And yes, the real shocker is that I have a pretty strong core. My trainer has seen to that, but yoga strengthens AND stretches and that is not something I’ve done for a very long while. Ouch!
Just to make you laugh, I’ve included a couple pictures here of me trying to get into pigeon pose. Trust me, this is not at all how it looks in the books.

Phase I REPEAT!
I am not a woman who repeats phases. I’m a been-there-done-that kind of girl. There’s so much more in the world to explore, why would I go back to something I’ve already done? I don’t usually repeat movies or books, would much rather go to a new restaurant no matter how weird than repeat an old one, and I’m not even all that excited about repeat vacations. Give me something new. So it was with considerable shock that I’m repeating two of the following phases. Guess which ones.
Was hugely into it 28 years ago, and have suddenly decided to buy my own bowling ball and shoes.
Crochet, embroidery, needlework I used to do it all before kids. Suddenly, I’m stocking up on yarn and looking at specialty hooks again.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I started reading Joss Whedon’s biography and just had to revisit this awesome TV show.
When I blew my knees fifteen years ago, I took up yoga to rehab them. Got to the point where I was teaching classes. I could never put my leg around my neck, but heck, maybe now’s the time!
Who doesn’t love getting dirty and watching things grow?
Rock climbing. My daughter got me started on it when she was 10. Then she discovered boys and we both stopped. Now I’m back into it. (And yes, I do look at all those hard bodied young men as they pass me by. I’m married, not dead.)
Answer: 3 and 4 I have started rewatching Buffy and love every second of it. Joss is brilliant. You know that question about who would you have dinner with if you could share a meal with anyone? I always say Joss Whedon. (And Stephen Moffet of Dr. Who.) And yes, I’ve gone back to yoga. I’m thinking of working it into a new book and so I just started up again. Answers 1 and 2 bowling and needlework were indeed phases, but so far I haven’t gone back. Answers 5 and 6 were never phases. I hate gardening and watching plants grow is boring, IMO. Rock climbing requires a bunch of arm, hand, and upper body strengthNOT my forte. But I will watch the hot young men as they demonstrate their skills!
So what about you? Any phase you want to revisit?
And while you’re at it, don’t forget to check out THE PLAYER NEXT DOOR by Kathy Lyons. Maybe there’s a reading-about-hot-basketball-players phase that you want to enjoy!

Sunday Rituals
It’s Sunday and I really just want to continue a Buffy marathon. I’m on season 3 now and I just love Joss Whedon’s talent. Every episode makes me smile. Great structure, amazing dialogue, and such a sense of fun while slaying. It rocks!
My favorite line today is from Giles. He’s mocking Buffy’s mom. See my new mask? Isn’t it pretty? It raises the dead. Americans! In Joyce’s defense (Buffy’s mom) she didn’t know it raised the dead. Here’s a picture of Joss in all his glory!
So while I was bemoaning having to work on Sunday (because I didn’t get this done during the week) my husband offered to start the blog for me. Guess which of the following suggestions came from him.
Rhapsodize on the brilliance of baseball. Especially Tiger baseball. (Hint: He grew up in Michigan)
Landscaping companies don’t seem to be very well organized. Even though they ask for the utilities to be marked so that they can plant a new tree, they don’t seem to know how to mow around their own requested flags.
Pizza is perfection. Especially if it’s a stuffed pizza with ham and pineapple. And we should eat our Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii. BTW, whether my husband said it or not, I absolutely agree that pizza in Hawaii is a great idea.
No suggestion. He gave me a kiss, said Good luck with that, then went to take a nap.
Answer: B Truthfully, if you know my husband, you’d believe most of these answers. He loves tiger baseball and Hawaiian pizza. Not to mention vacations in Hawaii. He has also often said, good luck with that as he goes to take a nap. It’s kind of our Sunday ritual.
But this time, he was thinking about the three dead trees that were taken out of our front yard. Here’s the open space in our yard that remains. Those little flags are there so the landscapers don’t put in the new tree on top of a utility line. Except, they mowed over those markings and removed a lot of the flags. When is the new tree coming? No idea. The guys who mowed said, Hopefully soon. Yeah, we hope so, too.
So that’s it for this week’s brilliance. I promise I’m better at brilliance when I craft a book. Speaking of which, have you picked up The Player Next Door by Kathy Lyons yet? Lots of quirky fun in that book. I even felt like a channeled Joss a few times!
You can buy it through the link on my website: The Player Next Door.
Happy reading!
