Agatha Christie's Forgotten Memoir

Do you still read Agatha Christie? What an amazing writer, so many books, so many hidden adventures -- like Vladimir Putin, she disappeared from sight a couple of times. We can revisit the fascinating period she spent in Syria when her "forgotten book" -- Come, Tell Me How You Live -- is republished in August. I'm ready to take the trek. How 'bout you?

Just $2.99!

The Kindle version of The Book of Spies is $2.99 for just 3 weeks then it jumps back up to $9.99! I really enjoyed writing the book. Library Journal named it one of the top spy thrillers of the year, and it was a finalist for the Nero award. The Journal called it "a thrilling, spy-laden, history-rich page-turner." Jeff Deaver said it "will consume you from page one.” The characters and story return in my next spy novel, The Assassins, due out June 30th

Mystery solved!

After 400 years of uncertainty, we now know what Shakespeare looked like -- thanks to a botany book. It's a great and thrilling detective tale....

I love this!

Here's the heart-warming story of an ex-CIA guy who's turned what he learned as an undercover spy into helping folks today. He was a disguise expert. I got interested in the subject for my next thriller, The Assassins. http://www.ozarksfirst.com/story/d/st...

I'm off to talk ...

I'm looking forward to today ... I've been invited to speak at the monthly meeting of Maine Romance Writers of America. It's true that I don't write in the romance category, but I always have love stories in my books -- the guys complain when I don't -- and I have a lot of respect for the authors in the romance field. If you're in the neighborhood, drop by!

Mark Twain rocks

Snarky, but funny, from Mark Twain: "Classic: a book which people praise and don't read." Wonder how he explains the enduring popularity of his own fine classics! :)Mark Twain

Am I a Bad Person?

I have a confession. When I get hooked on a great TV series, I'm, well, HOOKED. Does that happen to you? My latest and greatest is Boardwalk Empire. It is truly evil how insidious it is ... so many bad guys that even the "good" characters like Margaret have their sinful moments. And the violence is awful. Even I don't write that many back-to-back bloody, bone-shattering, tissue-spraying scenes. At least I can't remember ever doing that. Hmmm.

Anyway, a couple of days ago John handed me the Wall Street Journal and pointed to an article: "Spoiler Alert: A Binge Makes Me Cringe." Mind you, John is just as hooked as I am. We sit there in front of the TV holding hands and our breaths as the story unfolds -- lies, double-crosses, sex, and more sex. Oh, and then there's the nudity. As I said, I'm confessing here.

So I read the article, which is fairly balanced, although the author, Joanne Kaufman, makes it plain she thinks there's something wrong with those of us who like to watch one episode after another, night after night. This was what got me, a stab right into my solar plexus followed by a shooting pain down to the hand with which I hold the TV remote: a recent study suggests "a connection between binge-watching and depression, loneliness and a lack of self-control."

Oh, my. I didn't know I was depressed, lonely, and out of control. I thought I was just a normal crazy writer. Which reminds me, Netflix just delivered two more disks of Boardwalk Empire. John and I can't wait! May you enjoy your hookedness as much as we do!
