On my last night at Skriduklaustur, I went outside to finish some high-speed film, and wouldn't you know it but the aurora borealis came out for me. I didn't have a tripod, though… so I got a lot of blurry northern lights and stars pics like this one.

Excerpt from old unfinished essay about my dad dying
I was a feeble and uncoordinated child. I am a feeble and uncoordinated adult. I never learned to climb trees. There were so many birds around me, and so many trees, I never paid attention to what was what and which was which. In the summers I ran everywhere with bare feet but all winter I stayed indoors hunched over heating vents. My parents grew a huge garden and planted trees and my mother, who grew up in a big family on the farm, would make preserves and wine and win prizes at the fair for the size of her vegetables.
And when I met Adam I had no idea about any of these things. I remembered, but I didn't really remember. The first time I identified a bird by myself with the little old binoculars and the used bird book he gave me, I was delighted to say I'd found a starling; I think he could hardly keep from laughing when he informed me yes, I was right, it was one of the most common birds we have. A nuisance bird, the kind my dad might have shot or stole the eggs of. I'm remembering and relearning things slowly. I'm learning the birds first, and then the trees and flowers, and I'm baking bread, and preserves are next. If we ever get a yard I'll grow things.
I'm almost thirty and my dad is dying and I want to nest.

rob mclennan's new book, apertures
mclennan's forty-zillionth book is available for free PDF download. In it he collects poems he's written for and about other poets… including yours truly (hey, I'm the epigraph too!)
I haven't got through all of it yet, but here's a few lines from "Don McKay's birding":
the appeal is this, the details
in a fluttering breath
or long air current that exaggerates
a twitch
"A wyf! a, Seinte Marie, benedicite!
How myghte a man han any adversitee
That hath a wyf? Certes, I..."
How myghte a man han any adversitee
That hath a wyf? Certes, I kan nat seye."

A song of my childhood. Country radio. There was a girl in my grade 8 class named Jolene and I think this might have had something to do with it. (It was released in 1973, just before my classmates and I were born…). People make fun of Dolly Parton, but I think she's a kick-ass songwriter.
