Excerpt from the drafty novel in my drawer

A woman answered, holding a child of about two; there was a lot of yelling in the house, and as the woman was looking them over, silent, Sam in his nervousness looked straight through her into her little house; it was one room with faded flowered curtains blocking off two compartments. There was nothing on the stove. In the far end of the room a little shrine burned with candles in front of a picture of a saint Sam didn't recognize. A face peeked out quickly then hid again behind one of the curtains. The two children who were yelling, around school age, were playing at whipping each other with rods on the dirt floor.

"I believe there are few young men, and those very sturdy moralists, who would not rather be taxed with some moral peccadillo than want a knowledge of horsemanship. — Scott's "Rob Roy""

One of my Liberty Village photos from Toronto in 2005. I lived nearby, in Parkdale. This photo was hand-printed and hand-bleached. (I can't remember if I developed it myself or not, and I'm not about to go look up the negative for you this minute.) I've had people interested in purchasing these Liberty VIllage photos for stock via my Flickr stream, but I never heard back… maybe I quoted too high? Greedy photographer.

""Ev'ry Time, this is how it turns out." He has been traveling Inn to Inn with this Giant Specimen of Guyana Torpedo, giving Lectures upon, and Demonstrations of, the Electrical Creature's mysterious and often life-threatening abilities."

- Totally random quote from Thomas Pynchon's Mason and Dixon.

Now, this photo REALLY brings back the memories. But it does that every day, because, in fact, I have a print of it hanging in my bathroom.

I took this in 1997, which some old crappy point and shoot camera. It was my first trip abroad, and I went to Paris, alone and how old was I…. about 23? I met a lot of people and had a great time. The reason for my trip was that I was giving a paper at a Michael Ondaatje conference at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. Not bad for my first conference paper, too.

This is the Jardins du Luxembourg. I always liked this pic for the bright pop of yellow in the drear. I visited in late November/early December.

"The city's gods, according to some people, live in the depths, in the black lake that feeds..."

"The city's gods, according to some people, live in the depths, in the black lake that feeds the underground streams. According to others, the gods live in the buckets that rise, suspended from a cable, as they appear over the edge of the wells, in the revolving pulleys, in the windlasses of the norias, in the pump handles, in the blades of the windmills that draw the water up from the drillings, in the trestles that support the twisting probes, in the reservoirs perched on stilts over the roofs, in the slender arches of the aqueducts, in all the columns of water, the vertical pipes, the plungers, the drains, all the way up to the weathercocks that surmount the airy scaffoldings of Isaura, a city that moves entirely upward."

- Italo Calvino, Imaginary Cities
