Detox Diaries: Day 2

Yesterday I was better behaved. Truth be told, it’s probably because I didn’t leave the house.

Breakfast was steel cut oats with walnuts, apples, and a splash of illegal stevia.

Lunch was brown rice and teriyaki broccoli.

Dinner was a small bit of illegal leftover vegan risotto and this gorgeous salad shown above: spinach, sprouts, tomatoes, apples, walnuts.

Snacks included clementines, dates rolled in coconut, and a handful of walnuts.

Other than the stevia and processed risotto leftovers, I did good!

No Zen green tea with a packet of sugar to start the day. I missed the taste, but not the caffeine. Instead I consumed lots of herbal tea and hot water with lemon.

I’m supposed to add ground flaxseed to the hot lemon water, but I recall it all settling on the bottom last time and being goopy to drink. May obey tomorrow.

While I’m not hungry on this detox, I do miss sweet treats after most meals, my morning avocado toast (love the crunch), the taste of Zen green tea, and pizza. I think I could live on pizza. And maybe pumpkin pie, too.

To be continued. Day three. Bisous. x

Detox Diaries

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.—Michael Pollan

My first and last detox was in 2013. Yesterday I began my second one. It’s a 10-day program organized by a local nutrition and wellness coach.

The last attempt was semi-successful with only one big meltdown that may have included a jumbo slice of pizza from the joint around the corner. Said jumbo slice may have resulted in me getting sick after eating so pure for many days.

After celebrating my 13-year anniversary over a yummy vegan meal at Great Sage on Sunday, Tim and I headed to the grocery story next door to stock up on some essentials for the detox (that I’d somehow talked him in to joining).

We picked up brown rice, sunflower seeds, greens, cauliflower, miso, celery, ginger, walnuts, ground flaxseed, and chia seeds.

Here’s a taste of what we’re to exclude and include over the next 10 days:

No: animal protein (no problem!), dairy, corn, caffeine, alcohol, soda, fruit juice, sweeteners, bread, pasta, cereal, crackers, baked goods, vegetable oils, peanuts, processed foods.

Yes: unsweetened non-dairy yogurt, all veggies—especially dark leafy greens and non-starchy veggies, berries and citrus fruits, water, herbal tea, non-dairy milk, fruit/veggie smoothies, fresh dates for sweetening, whole gluten-free grains, beans, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, chia/flax/hemp seeds, fresh herbs and spices, seaweed, vinegar.

After many meetings and teaching a Mindfulness class at Tranquil Space last night, I was weak. I saw leftover Dove dark chocolates on my desk and couldn’t resist. One, two, three, and on wasn’t enough. Finally I ran out (thank goodness). On the way home I thought, “I’ve already failed day one, I might as well finish my pizza.”

Tim had roasted veggies and cooked brown rice for dinner. Yet, when I walked in the door and confessed about my Dove meltdown, he said, “Well, you might as well finish the pizza then!” I laughed, squeezed him tightly as I released my inner critic release, and said, “Exactly!”

Day one: Monday I had avocado toast for breakfast, Zen tea with one raw sugar packet, a spinach salad with avocado, tomato, sunflower seeds, and apple for lunch, 10 tiny Dove chocolates and two leftover pieces of pizza for dinner. Needless to say, it wasn’t a strong start. No bread, sugar, chocolate, or pizza is allowed. I rocked my lunch though!

Follow along here as I share my journey through this 10-day detox. And a journey it is. Bisous. x

Journaling

I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.—Joan Didion

Sunday I was curled up in bed with a cuppa green tea and a journal to start the day.

As I sat upright with a few pillows stuffed behind my back, I grabbed a pen and began to write. My entry began with the date and time. From there it flowed into my current state of mind—what I felt mentally, physically, emotionally.

Our journals give us space to reflect, dream, grieve, rant, and more. Research shows that journal writing can strengthen immune cells, clarify thoughts and feelings, help with self-understanding, reduce stress, and solve problems.

The hardest part is staring at a blank page. Below is an assortment of prompts to help you begin.

Write a journal entry to your future self in 10 years. Date it 1/16/27.
If resources such as time and money weren’t a factor, how would you spend your days?
List your short term and long term goals.
If you could change one thing about your present life, what would it be?
How would you like to make this world a better place?
How can you best share your gifts with the world?
What would make you feel mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually fulfilled?
Describe what you see in front of you.
Write a love letter to your past or future self.
What was the last thing you read, heard, or saw that inspired you?
What wants attention?

Grab a pen, paper, and a cuppa. Listen deeply. Let the muse out to play.

Wishing you a tranquil week ahead. Bisous. x

Virtual Retreat {$50 off ends TONIGHT}

Our next Virtual Retreat with NEW practices and a NEW theme of Slowing Down will broadcast on Saturday, March 11 from 10am-4pm ET.

This day is a sampling of the full-fledged retreat experience from the comfort of your own home AND for all budgets.

Peruse FAQs, testimonials, and former retreat photos.

Our six-hour adventure includes:

live opening and closing gatherings
live mid-day check-in and mindful eating
guided multimedia how-tos on writing, yoga, meditation, mindful eating, and art journaling with accompanying exercises
three guidebooks: pre- and post-retreat PDF manuals and a day-of PDF manual
a private Facebook group
recipes
a playlist
and more!

Here’s what previous participants had to say:

I can’t thank you enough for such a clearly thought out virtual retreat. It was such a blessing not to need to get dressed, drive to an airport, not have to put on make-up, and to be comfortable in my own home without distraction.

Participating has reminded me how good it feels to slow down and give myself the time to recharge. Feeling a new spark of creativity.

I have to say, being the introvert that I am and loving my quiet time, this was something I would do again and again. Being in my own familiar space, relaxed but at the same time connected with everyone. You thought of everything!

Hit the pause button, vary your routine, learn new skills, connect with like-hearted ladies, and return with what’s most meaningful to you.

Consider carving out six hours just for you on March 11. It would be an honor to retreat with you!

$49 through January 16, then $99

Week in Review {Pics + Links}

Week in Review

Today I woke up at 10:30. I haven’t slept this late in a very long time and must confess that I crawled into bed at 10:30 last night.

Yep, 12 hours of slumber is incredibly decadent and somehow felt necessary. There was a lot of energetic output this week and I like to believe the deep sleep was my body’s way of replenishing.

I seem to straddle between these two extremes in search of homeostasis.

This week included three yoga classes, teaching mindfulness, seeing clients, an all-day studio directors’ meeting, a studio directors’ brunch, tea time with two friends, bookstore browsing, seeing Wicked at the Kennedy Center, hosting Tranquility du Jour Live, conducting a podcast interview, being featured on the Just Stay Curious podcast,  packing up 23 goody bags for the studio’s teacher trainees, having lunch with colleagues from a social work internship, having a session with my writing coach, and traveling to the woods for the weekend.

May you have moments that bridge the gap between output and input this weekend. Our souls crave this. Bisous. x

Small Shifts: TDJ Live TOMORROW

All you can do for your own unfolding is to set the conditions by slowing down for a bit (that’s the good soil), giving yourself the gift of your own presence in your life (that’s the water), and meditating regularly to help open to move of who and what you really are (that’s the sun).—Sarah Susanka

Hello week two of 2017. I don’t know about you, but life still isn’t back to “normal” post-holiday. There’s the mental recovery from spending weeks studying for an exam, wrapping my head around being licensed after the 7.5-year journey, and transitioning into a new schedule that’s still unfolding.

Last night I was able to attend an evening yin session at Tranquil Space. My Tuesday night hasn’t been open in almost three years. It felt luxurious.

These small changes create profound ripple effects.

Although the new year focus is often on BIG change, I’m looking at ways to make micro shifts that create more ease. Up early to journal. To bed early to read. Walk to work versus bike (gotta get my steps). Pack my lunch. Use the Insight Timer app to track my morning meditation. Schedule down days for thinking and being. Eat less processed food (bye bye frozen pizza).

While these aren’t the super sexy like spend two months abroad, start a new business, or take on a leadership role, I’m liking the simplicity.

When I wrote the conclusion to HTC10 last month, I mentioned how the past decade highlighted a deep desire—and need—to slow down and simplify. While this doesn’t match my typical go, go, go personality, it’s a gentle tug I feel compelled to honor.

And it begins with these small changes.

I look forward to sharing more with you during tomorrow’s Tranquility du Jour Live. Bisous. x
