tranquilosophy: week 2

This complimentary program is a way for us to stay motivated and engaged in 2015. Each week I'll send inspiration your way via Love Notes early in the week and here on Thursdays.

To find support, join the private Facebook group designed to create community and call in to the seasonal Tranquilosophy podcasts to connect live. Last week's "New Year, New You" seasonal podcast recording is available.

This is my gift to you. Thank you for reading, listening, and supporting Tranquility du Jour.

Week 2: Choose Your Theme

When you reflect on what you'd like to see more of this year, is there a word, phrase, image, or quote that comes to mind?

For some, choosing the right word can feel daunting, as if they're stuck with something for an entire year, so it better be perfect.

That's why I like the idea of choosing a theme, something that is fluid and broad. Whatever you choose to work with, it can become a beacon for your day-to-day actions and decisions.

Since I've been doing this exercise, I've worked with themes of spaciousness, simplicity, and beauty. After reusing the word spaciousness repeatedly for a few years, I'm delighted to share that it has become much more of a reality. It's like planting a seed of intention every single day courtesy of the attention the theme receives.

Same with simplicity. I continue to focus on paring down to what is essential. Although there is much more room for growth, this theme is an umbrella for how I use my time and energy.

Beauty is something I seek to infuse in all that I do—from lighting candles in the morning to surrounding myself with fresh flowers to sealing snail mail love notes with washi tape. Beauty will remain a theme for years.

Have you chosen a theme for 2015? What is something you'd like to see infused into your days? If you truly lived your theme this year, how would things be different?

Week 1: Let it Percolate

Ready to dream up big adventures for 2015? Ok, maybe once you get through your inbox?

Returning to routine after the holiday festivities can feel, well, less than tranquil.

No more homemade cookies covered with sprinkles, invites to festive parties, or anticipation of time off with loved ones.

I believe the first Monday post-twinkle light-infused hollydaze is one of the hardest days to acclimate.

That's why we're launching this program today. To inspire a different way of starting the new year. Slowly and intentionally.

Allow your dreams for 2015 to percolate. There's no rush to plan the perfect resolutions, get in shape, or to figure out your life plan. I like to use "reflection, intention, action" as my road map for looking ahead.

Reflection: Take a few hours or days to reflect on highlights and lessons learned in 2014. Note what transpired throughout the year. Look through your journal, planner, or photos to insight recollections of forgotten adventures.

Intention: Upon review of 2014, what stands out as an overarching theme that you'd like to carry into 2015? It may be a word, an image, a phrase, or a quote. Write it down and display it where you'll see it regularly. Use this word to assist with decision making, planning, and beyond. Does the action you're considering align with your year's intention? If not, it may help you say "yes" or "no" with confidence.

Action: Spend time settling back into a routine sans travel, family, and Santa. Notice what wants attention. Is your body in need of more movement? Sign up for yoga classes. Is your creative side feeling neglected? Spend time with your art journal. Is your home in disarray from holiday decor? Schedule a cathartic decluttering session {which I did all weekend and documented here}. Take micromovements forward one tiny step at a time.

Choose consciously. Create the small changes you crave. Listen deeply to the longings within. Let's make 2015 a year full of experiences and give them proper time and space to percolate.

What do you feel brewing within? Share in our Facebook group and watch for Week 2 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility delivered to your inbox next week. Bisous. x

wednesday well-being: rest

snapped during yesterday's snowfall
While teaching Monday's Mindfulness class at Tranquil Space, I shared a reading emphasizing how rest was not the opposite of activity, it was the foundation to activity. That statement has stuck with me ever since.
So, when the studio's electricity was out all day yesterday and my evening yin yoga plans were thwarted, I headed to bed at 7pm to seek rejuvenation (and credited the reading as my justification).
As mentioned in Monday's launch of 52 Weeks of Tranquility, launching into the new year with an ambitious game plan is inspiring. Yet, I encourage something slightly different. More of a soft launch into the new year. The chance to slowly wade into the pool that is 2015.
Last week I shared my 2015 dreams and on Monday I hosted the Tranquilosophy seasonal podcast outlining tips on making this year more meaningful. They are suggestions based on ways that I'm trying to shift my do, do, do mentality to a softer approach.
My hope is that my word of the year, simplicity, will be sprinkled throughout all I do. It's my overarching theme to help me with decision making, projects, presentation, home environment, and more. And, frankly, sometimes simplicity means crawling into bed at 7pm to . . . rest.
How will you embrace rest today, tomorrow, and beyond? Bisous. x
