What's on at the movies 1 June 2017?
I only saw one film this week. A popcorn muncher for sure in Wonder Woman and then there's the other I didn't review, which is, well, I don't know what you would call BayWatch. A time muncher!Don't forget to enter my latest competition either. You know you want that Kindle PaperWhite and all my books, right?
Wonder Woman ✪✪✪½ Opened June 1
I was one of the rare reviewers who enjoyed Suicide Squad and Batman Vs Superman, so I was looking forward to this film. Unfortunately Wonder Woman was simply not wondrous for me. I found nothing new here despite it being, as far as I know, the first recent super hero film with a lead female. However please ignore my thoughts as my teenage son and his friends enjoyed it very much, along with a couple of tweens we brought along, and my friends. So I'm the odd person out, so it really could be "It's not you, it's me," this time. Occasionally films are like books and are so subjective. Just because a reviewer doesn't love a film doesn't mean you won't. I will say that Gal Gadot as Diana/Wonder Woman is charismatic and utterly drop dead gorgeous. Chris Pine is a little tamed but still his usual lovely self. Danny Huston as Ludendorff the bad Nazi (they're all bad Nazis as enemies lately), and David Thewlis as Sir Patrick were good, except after Thewlis's turn as Remus Lupin in Harry Potter, I kept expecting him to flourish a wand. Fight scenes are quite stupendous and Wonder Woman does have a really wicked way with that whip and I like the clanging metal armbands. So much more effective than a whistle if you get into strife in a dark park. If this is your kind of thing (and it usually is mine) go enjoy Wonder Woman. You'll need a big popcorn too.Film BlurbBefore she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny. Starring Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis.BayWatch (not reviewed)Opened June 1
They're resurrecting another TV show yet again from the eighties in the wake of 21 Jump Street, Dukes of Hazzard, Mod Squad and Charlies Angels. Not sure if any life guard can save this. Apparently Dwayne Johnson makes a fine attempt but it still drowns.Critics Consensus from Rotten Tomatoes: Baywatch takes its source material's jiggle factor to R-rated levels, but lacks the original's campy charm -- and leaves its charming stars flailing in the shallows. Received 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning only 19% of critics rated it a pass.Film BlurbBAYWATCH follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Zac Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

NORMAN: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer ✪✪✪ Opened May 25th
I'm torn with this. I've been a Richard Gere fan sinceAn Officer and a Gentlemanand, of course,Pretty WomanHe rarely lets us down and still beyond handsome at 67. This film though is not fantastical, although it tries its darnedest to be whimsical. It's a kind of a heist film but with Gere playing Norman a hapless fixer who seems to serve no purpose in life except to introduce people to each other in order to pitch his financial schemes. While all the characters are well drawn and it's an interesting idea, everything doesn't pull together at the end and you are left thinking 'so what?' Possibly that was the message of the film, but I don't think film audiences want to think that after coughing up hard-earned bucks. Plus with Gere as Norman, they've gone to great measures to uglify him, so we can't even count on that.So this is more the rise and tragic fall of a film that could have scaled above the pack but is only okay.Film BlurbNorman Oppenheimer is a small time operator who befriends a young politician at a low point in his life. Three years later, when the politician becomes an influential world leader, Norman's life dramatically changes for better and worse. Starring Richard Gere, Lior Ashkenazi, Michael Sheen, Steve Buscemi, Hank Azaria and Directed by Joseph Cedar.PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES ✪✪✪ ½Opened May 25th
Honestly I thought, why are they are going back into these rough seas yet again? Oh yeah, Hollywood gold! Why build a whole new ship when you can raise the one sitting on the ocean floor to sail away again? This is the new Hollywoodof raising shipwrecks and pleasure cruisers from the bottom of the barrel to make money. So the invite to the preview didn't fill me with great anticipation. However I was surprised to find that indeed there was a fresh wind breathed into these ragged sails and the film certainly floats. (Excuse all the puns but a reviewer has to have a little fun occasionally.) The producer Jerry Bruckheimer has commented on sailing this little black pearl once more, that if they went again with the franchise they needed to take it back to its swashbuckling roots and bring back the fun and romance that had sorely slipped beneath the waves after the first film.Norwegian directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning achieved this by sticking to what we loved about the first: pace, humor and some pretty scary characters. Javier Badem playing evil undead Captain Salaza,r and his crew with their waving CGI hair, cracked faces and ghostly limbs and faces, certainly will give the younger ones nightmares. Jeffrey Rush is back as Captain Barbossa and of course Johnny Depp and his crew, including the monkey. Brenton Thwaites, the young Queensland actor plays the lead Henry Turner. His mainsail is certainly on the rise in Hollywood after appearing inSon of a Gun(filmed in WA),Malifecent, Gods of EgyptandThe Giver. All in all, a good blockbuster film with some seriously great stunts and CGI. Climb aboard, don't over analyze and you'll enjoy the ride. Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, there's a number six sailing to a cinema near you in the future!Film BlurbThrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp)feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar(Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy. Also StarringGeoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario. Previous films 2003, 2006, 2007, 2011.THE SENSE OF AN ENDING (not reviewed) Opened May 25th

VICEROY'S HOUSE ✪✪✪✪Opened May 18th
So I wasn't always listening at school and modern history was not a subject in which I wasparticularly interested in. However, the great thing about films and television is you can learn and catch up. Yes, I know it's fictionalized but I can gather the general idea of some key points in history. With Viceroy's House, a particularly good historical account of the reversion of power from the British back to the Indians in 1947, I learned something new. I had no idea that Pakistan was a new country. The staging of the granting of independence, and the interweaving of a love story to demonstrate the religious divide, was a good call. You really can't wrong with Gillian Anderson, Michael Gambon, Hugh Bonneville and Simon Callow. Well worth a look.Film BlurbViceroy's House in Delhi was the home of the British rulers of India. After 300 years, that rule was coming to an end. For 6 months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. The film's story unfolds within that great house. Upstairs lived Mountbatten together with his wife and daughter; downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - converged on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted. A decision was taken to divide the country and create a new Muslim homeland: Pakistan. It was a decision whose consequences reverberate to this day. StarringGillian Anderson, Manish Dayal, Michael Gambon, Simon Callow and Hugh BonnevilleDON'T TELL✪✪✪✪Opened May 18th
Wow! This film just cements further the quality of Australian filmmaking at the moment. We are doing a great job. In fact, I can't fault this film for the production values, acting and storytelling.A solid script is beautifully realized on screen and the performances are stellar. If you enjoyedSpotlight, and I say enjoyed loosely because these are upsetting themes, then you should definitely see this.Don't Tellportrays its characters particularly well and the court room scenes will please any fans of the genre.Prepare yourself for an extreme emotional reaction but at the same time the main character Lyndal's attitude is inspirational as well. Very, very intelligent film.Film BlurbDon’t Tell is the story of a young woman who fought back after enduring sexual abuse at a prestigious private school. With a dogged and determined local lawyer by her side, Lyndal took on the powerful church that denied her abuse for over a decade.Based on true events that changed Australian child protection laws, Don’t Tell is a poignant story about finding the courage to stand up, speak out and fight against injustice. StarringTeresa Palmer, Max Riemelt, Emma Bading Lucie Aron and Matthias HabichKING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORDOpened May 18th
My substitute film spy Wendy could not stop sharing how much she loved this film. Her all time favorite for the year, she told me. Apparently this isGuy Ritchieat his best, with the interweaving of music, solid characters and action.I plan to go see it myself shortly. Besides I love King Arthur and Guy Ritchie, so I know it'll be rock and rolla fun.Film BlurbAcclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword." StarringCharlie Hunnamin the title role, the film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur's journey from the streets to the throne. When the child Arthur's father is murdered, Vortigern(Jude Law),Arthur's uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy...whether he likes it or not. Also starringAidan Gillen, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, and Djimon Hounsou.Guy Ritchie directed Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Man from U.N.C.L.E, Sherlock Holmes.OPENED LAST WEEKALIEN: COVENANTNot reviewedOpened May 10th
I didn't make it to the Alien Covenant preview. My son won a car ... yep, a car, which was presented to him at his school assembly. The competition was through West Australia's state motor club, the RAC, and aimed at youth beginning their driving life. Pretty exciting stuff. So on the preview night we were celebrating with extended family. However I sent my friend Wendy along in my place to reportback. I also checked in with fellow reviewers. Most reports were that it was same 'ol, same 'ol, that Michael Fassbender was good and there were plenty of alien scenes. Shame because the first two films are still in my favorites list. I think the well is dry Mr. Ridley Scott and unless youhave something groundbreakingly new, time to fish elsewhere.Film BlurbRidley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape. StarringMichael Fassbender, Demian Bichir, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride (IV), Billy Crudup and Jussie Smollett.SNATCHED ✪✪✪Opened May 10th
Honestly without Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn's charm on screen this would be dull as, and I would have taken the opportunity to 'snatch' some zzz's.The storyline is your typical silly comedy, pretty much a staple Adam Sandler type goofball, fish out of water, down on their luck, gets themselves into trouble stuff. There were a few laughs but not enough to move this into the fabulous, creative comedy arena. I think I laugh more atModern Familyand my latest discoveryVeep.Still if you are looking for a girl's night out comedy this will fit the bill nicely.Film BlurbAfter her boyfriend dumps her on the eve of their exotic vacation, impetuous dreamer Emily Middleton(Amy Schumer)persuades her ultra-cautious mother, Linda(Goldie Hawn)to travel with her to paradise. Polar opposites, Emily and Linda realize that working through their differences as mother and daughter - in unpredictable, hilarious fashion - is the only way to escape the wildly outrageous jungle adventure they have fallen into. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn star in the new comedy adventure SNATCHED, which also featuresIke Barinholtz("Neighbors"),Wanda Sykes("Bad Moms") andJoan Cusack("Working Girl").

THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE✪✪✪½Opened May 4th
Every time I see a based-on-real-events WW2 film I marvel that there is yet another untold story of bravery from this tragic era. The Zookeeper's Wife is a very good drama with the added benefit of cute animals.Jessica Chastain is always marvelous and Daniel Bruhl is always unlikable. That guy really needs to get a gig where he's not the villain. This is another engaging film about heroism that reminds us yet again to count our blessings and marvel at the courage and humanity of some human beings in the face of pure evil.Film BlurbThe real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nomineeJessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenberghof "The Broken Circle Breakdown"), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Germans, Jan and Antonina are stunned - and forced to report to the Reich's newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühlof "Captain America: Civil War"). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance - and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk. Also starringMichael McElhattonas Jerzyk,Iddo Goldbergas Maurycy Fraenkel andShira Haasas Urszula.GET OUT✪✪½Opened May 4th
Again Blumhouse Studios with it's founder Jason Blum has found another horror tale to grab the box-office dollars. He's got a great formula: confined settings, a house, a basement and such, then add people, usually young, who are going to die and filter in some terrible villain or villains, either supernatural, paranormal, or just plain crazy as inSplit(or is the villain really paranormal?) Then throw a few jump scares in, a touch of irony and comedy, andwala, we have box office bonanza.I thought this film was well created and the first half was reasonably entertaining, but the last third comes crashing down for me. However, all my fellow reviewers marveled at the social commentary on prejudice and found it slick and compelling. So I don't who has the best taste. I watch a film for entertainment and horror for the fun, not social commentary. This was reasonably entertaining but just pretty dumb at the end. The teenagers will eat it up though.Film BlurbNow that Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.StarringDaniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones and Marcus Henderson.A DOG'S PURPOSE✪✪✪½Opened May 4th
I'm not a dog person. Wait a minute though before you turn away in disgust. I was a dog person before children. In fact, I had four Maltese terriers over a fifteen year period before kids just consumed my life, as they do. I've also just become a dog person again because my 14 year old has convinced me, (make that relentlessly badgered) to get a dog.So today we welcomed little Ella a Maltese Shitshu into our home. The things you do for your kids. This film is for dog lovers and also not for dog lovers. My friend who loves dogs found it too upsetting to watch and did not enjoy; while I just thought it was sweet, if not overly saccharine. But you can get away with that with animals, I figure. So whether you will enjoy this quite lovely family film is dependent on your passion for your dog. I didn't cry but ask me again in a week's time once Ella has licked her way into my heart.Film BlurbA Dog's Purpose" shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2 ✪✪✪✪Opened April 27th
The firstGuardians of the Galaxyin 2014 was a breath of intergalactic fresh air. Part of the Marvel family, the anti-heroes who accidentally found themselves saving the galaxy provided the situational comedy fizz that has been quickly evaporating from the other Marvel franchises. This sequel has been on many people's must-see list, including mine, for the past few months. From the opening scene where the cutest creature you'll ever see, Baby Groot, hip-hops to ELO's Mr. Blue Sky, to the CGI'd Kurt Russell, to the razor-sharp repartee between the leads, I was in love withVolume 2. Five stars I was thinking in the opening scenes.By the time we'd moved to the middle act, there was less hip-hop and too much of the usual naval-gazing exposition where we learn what the Kurt Russell character Ego is all about. Here I was throwing around 3.5 to 4 stars. There's some rather dumb scenes where Ego explains his history to Peter Quill's/Star-Lord. Instead of just telling him he demonstrates using what look like store-window dummies. There's corny and then there's cornball. However, throw in another couple of Groot scenes, where I was so close to shouting, "Please no more, he's too cute and I can't take it," and I was back up to four again. If I ignored all the patchy moments in the second half, I could almost give it a 4.5 for the two Stan Lee cameo's alone. But I'm a tough old reviewer and I gotta save a star for the truly remarkable films I know must be coming. Still it's a 4 star for the fun and baby Groot, and one of the most entertaining four star films you'll see.Great music. Tick. Witty. Tick. Fun Fights. Tick. Baby Groot. Aww. Hug!P.S. Stay to the very end of the credits. There are five extra scenes in total and the last two are the best.Film BlurbThe Guardians of the Galaxy leap back into action in this Marvel Studios sequel from writer/director James Gunn. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi. The team struggles to keep its newfound family together as it tires to unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage in the outer reaches of the galaxy."Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker and Vin Diesel's voice as Groot.GOING IN STYLE ✪✪✪Opened April 20th
As a fellow reviewer commented, this is a forgettable film and about what you would expect from three aging, sorry aged actors in a remake. I don't have any problem with older actors, especially these three plus the addition of Anne Margaret and Christopher Lloyd, but it's the script where I struggle. Why does that have to be doddery and aged too? The running joke of them being old, quickly becomes as tired as the characters claim to be.In saying that, I wasn't bored and certainly not the worst film I've seen this year. I'll scrape it in at a three star for sentimental value. Several people who came with me to the screening actually 'loved' the film. You might too so, as I always say, watch the trailer and if it looks like yourstylethen give it a go.Film BlurbOscar winnersMorgan Freeman("Million Dollar Baby"),Michael Caine("The Cider House Rules," "Hannah and Her Sisters") andAlan Arkin("Little Miss Sunshine") team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty, in directorZach Braff's comedy "Going in Style." Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.BERLIN SYNDROME ✪✪✪✪Opened April 20th
An Australian/German production, Berlin Syndrome is quality Australian drama. We've seen abduction and hostage films likeRoom, but this is a little different and certainly shares a cautionary story about backpacking and trusting strangers. There is something particularly creepy about this film and even visceral. Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) gives a strong, in-depth performance as the Aussie traveler who enjoys a holiday fling with the wrong person. I'm sure this is one story I will not forget, which is saying something for me.Most people coming out of the screening commented on how good the film was but that they never wanted to see it again. I suspect some of the intensity will be lost on a small screen. Well worth a visit to the cinema. If you have teenagers might be a good idea to show them as an education in not trusting everyone you meet, no matter how charming and good looking.Film BlurbWhile holidaying in Berlin, Australian photojournalist, Clare meets Andi, a charismatic local man and there is an instant attraction between them. A night of passion ensues. But what initially appears to be the start of a romance suddenly takes an unexpected and sinister turn when Clare wakes the following morning to discover Andi has left for work and locked her in his apartment. An easy mistake to make, of course, except Andi has no intention of letting her go again. Ever. StarringTeresa Palmer, Max Riemelt, Emma Bading Lucie Aron and Matthias HabichTHE FINEST HOURS✪✪✪½Opened April 20th
This film has been previewed as much asLion, which means the film company wants to create a buzzing word of mouth for a film that may not look exciting enough for people to spend their money onGood publicity move because the buzz is spot on. This is one of those lovely British films based on a true life story that delivers the laughs, the poignant moments and Bill Nighy. Honestly I'd watch Bill Nighy in anything. If you enjoyedTrumbo, Lion, Hidden Figuresthen this is definitely your cup of tea with it's lovely blend of strong characters, snappy script and fascinating history.Film BlurbThe year is 1940, London. With the nation bowed down by war, the British ministry turns to propaganda films to boost morale at home. Realizing their films could use "a woman's touch," the ministry hires CatrinCole (Gemma Arterton) as a scriptwriter in charge of writing the female dialogue. Although her artist husband looks down on her job, Catrin's natural flair quickly gets her noticed by cynical, witty lead scriptwriter Buckley (Sam Claflin). GHOST IN THE SHELL ✪✪✪Opened March 30
This film is from a 1995 Japanese anime by the same name, which was created from a manga title of the same name. Those who enjoy the genre in fiction will recognize this as pure Cyber Punk.I'm a sci-fi fan and this is a little out there as opposed to the type of sci-fi I enjoy, however I still found it interesting and beautifully done. Scarlett Johansson plays the role of a personality transplanted into a robotic shell. She's the ghost part. Some of it is a little confusing but if you venture to see this one just go with the flow and enjoy marveling at the incredible imagination of the original creator of the comic book story.Film BlurbIn the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people's minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others. Based on the internationally acclaimed Japanese Manga, "The Ghost in the Shell."THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE ✪✪✪Opened March 30
Admittedly I'd already seenThe Boss Babyon the Sunday morning of this film preview, so watching two children's animations one after the other is probably not the best way to review a film.I loved the originalThe Lego Movieand the year long teaser trailers for this have had most of us salivating. This film promised wit and many laughs and possibly another of those catchy songs that will drive you crazy like The Lego Movie'sEverything is Awesome. However, I just wasn't charmed by this film and neither was my teenage son, or my friend who came along with her kids. It's certainly still fun but I felt the joke about Batman being unfeeling and cold got a little stale after the first half dozen references. Many of my reviewer friends though did enjoy the film, so I'm not going to say don't see it. Just don't go along expecting the freshness and laughs we enjoyed in the first Lego film. We were all agreed upon that.Film BlurbIn the irreverent spirit of fun that made "The LEGO (R) Movie" a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble - LEGO Batman - stars in his own big-screen adventure: "The LEGO (R) Batman Movie." But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker's hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGEOpened March 30
Not reviewed but I'm presuming if you enjoyed the first couple, you will enjoy this. Probably one for the littlies.Film BlurbIn this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!LAND OF MINE ✪✪✪½Opened March 30
Land of Mine was first show in Perth at the Scandinavian Film Festival last year and our local wonderful alternative cinemas Luna brought the film back for its own run. This is another untold story from WW2 and of course it is grim and heartbreaking. It's beautifully styled and the teenage actors are just incredible and this is a polished cinematic offering as we usually find with the Danish films. In some parts I feel the narrative slowed and there was a shade of repetitiveness. However, if you are a fan of these historic dramas you will enjoy. Just know that if you are a parent of teenage children, the story and what happens to these poor boys might distress you. My boys are about the same age as the children portrayed and so my mind kept straying to them. I don't particularly enjoy this type of cinematic experience because it's far too easy to feel the emotions of a mother for these children.Interestingly Director Martin Pieter Zandvliet had commented that while filming the teenage actors didn't know when they would be killed off, so that is real sweat on their brows I imagine. Once they 'died' in the film they were then sent home. The remaining actors would then feel all the emotions of their characters being left behind. Apparently they grew increasingly lonely as time went on and filming continued. Seems rather cruel actually. I think that's what you call method directing.Film BlurbIn the aftermath of World War II, a group of surrendered German soldiers are ordered by Allied forces to remove their own landmines from the coast of Denmark. Directed by Martin Zandvliet, Land of Mine made its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS ✪✪✪✪Opened April 4 at Lotterywest FilmFestival Perth
I enjoy music including classical music but I've never heard of the Silk Road Ensemble. Yo-Yo Ma yes, ensemble or the musicians in the ensemble created by Yo-Yo in 2000, no, not even a whisper. So I feel privileged to be enlightened. This is a film for music and creative enthusiasts. It isn't one of those documentaries where you walk away thinking, 'Wow, that was incredible!' even though the vision and music hauntingly wonderful. This is more just a gentle reminder that beauty is in so many aspects of life that we miss noticing. This is also a film of hope and the incredible fortitude of man and his need to create something bigger than himself. When I got home I was desperate to listen to more of the Silk Road Ensemble. I'm now a fan. Fabulous music and just an extraordinary blend of culture. Their music is certainly magical.Film Blurb‘They don’t need to speak a common language: Their dazzling music says it all.’Washington PostWe speak perfect Music. This life-affirming documentary celebrates the power of music to uplift and unite. The Silk Road Ensemble was established by cellis Yo-Yo Ma to promote collaboration between cultures and is an ever-changing group of musicians from countries including Iran, Spain, Syria and China. This triumphant film from the director of Oscar-winner 20 Feet from Stardom (PIAF 2014) focuses on Yo-Yo Ma and four key musicians, each of whom brings something wonderful to the mix. If you seek a vision of hope in the face of global anxieties, this is the film for you.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ✪✪✪✪✪Opened March 23
Beauty and the Beast has been one of my favorite Disney animations over the years and I think as a children's musical the songs are up there withChitty Chitty Bang BangandMary Poppins.Disney did a wonderful job in 2015 of reimaginingCinderellaand they've done it again. Beauty and the Beast is a sumptuous, gloriously colored and so beautifully detailed film that the experience will not disappoint a single filmgoer, no matter your age.Hiring Bill Condon to direct was a great move. He's an Oscar winner for the screenplay forGods and Monstersand his screenplay forChicagoalso received a nomination. As screenwriter and director forDreamgirlsandChicago, he knows his way around big musicals. He also directed the last twoTwilightfilms, but we'll forgive him that. The voice actors, Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, Ewen McGregor, Ian McKellen and others are wonderful and bring such life to the characters. Emma Watson is a lovely Belle and Dan Stevens a perfect fit for the Beast, from the arrogant prince, to the voice of Belle's captor, to the handsome suitor.Honestly, do not miss this on the big screen. This is something very special and worth every cent you pay to sit there and travel to another one of Disney's magical lands.Film BlurbDisney's "Beauty and the Beast" is a live-action re-telling of the studio's animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. "Beauty and the Beast" is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle's enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast's hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars:Emma Watsonas Belle;Dan Stevensas the Beast;Luke Evansas Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar (R) winnerKevin Klineas Maurice, Belle's eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston's long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe (R) nomineeEwan McGregoras Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nomineeStanley Tuccias Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Oscar nomineeIan McKellenas Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award (R) winnerEmma Thompsonas the teapot, Mrs. Potts.Directed by Oscar (R) winner Bill Condonbased on the 1991 animated film, "Beauty and the Beast" is produced by Mandeville Films'David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, with eight-time Oscar-winning composerAlan Menken, who won two Academy Awards (R) (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film, providing the score, which will include new recordings of the original songs written byMenken and Howard Ashman, as well as several new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice. "Beauty and the Beast" will be released in U.S. theaters on March 17, 2017.THE BOSS BABY✪✪✪Opened March 23
Two animated films on one Sunday is not the ideal for me. Sorry but I'm usually recovering from a busy life on Sundays and those comfy chairs and a darkened cinema spell sleep to my body. However, I do love a witty kid's film and Dreamworks rarely disappoints, so I made the trek to the cinema from 10am until 3pm to see this followed immediately byThe Batman Lego Movie. Oh, the price I pay to bring you the best recommendations.TheBoss Babyis a fun film and the concept of how babies are prepared at Baby Inc before delivery to their parents is certainly different. In fact, there were moments in this film where I thought the screenwriters might need some kind of therapy. Some ideas are truly warped but also very witty. The little kids in the cinema seemed to enjoy, as did the big ones. I checked around and most kids loved it and parents thought it was fun. It's not in the league ofToy StoryorDisney animations but definitely not boring.Alec Baldwinwas genius casting as the Boss Baby and the voice talent ofSteve Buscemi, Lisa KudrowandTobey Maguireadd up to making this a worthwhile cinema visit. A fun animation for the whole family.Film BlurbDreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit ofAlec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy, DreamWorks' The Boss Baby. The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7 year old named Tim. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family, DreamWorks' The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all agesPOWER RANGERS ✪✪✪Opened March 23
My boys loved the Power Rangers when they were younger but this film seemed as though it might be now too young for them. We had opted to go see the terrifying bit oh so fun Life, which was on the same night in an adjacent cinema screen to the Power Rangers preview. So I sent a friend along to see this with her two boys aged twelve and fourteen, while I took her fifteen year old daughter and my son to seeLifein the adjacent cinema. Her boys weren't big Power Ranger fans but were in the right age group to appreciate this, more so than my older teenage boys. Their report back was that they thoroughly enjoyed the film, including my adult friend.Their comments were that the action was fun, the CGI very well done and the film would be enjoyed by kids from the age of about ten or eleven up but might be too scary for the little ones, who would enjoy the PG television show. So just be warned if you have five or six year olds who fancy themselves as Power Rangers. After hearing the enthusiastic response to the film from my friend and her kids now my sixteen year old wants to go see it. So Power Rangers is in my future.Film BlurbFrom a story by Executive ProducerRoberto Orci(TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwritersZack Stentz and Ashley Miller(X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. You'll read criticism about this film in that it's derivative ofAlienandGravityand, yes, there is that. If we're going to delve into past films, there'sThe Blobtoo but are filmmakers not allowed to revisit classics to create something new? Let's judge a film on whether it delivers to the demographic for which it's aimed, then see how the experience stacks up. This is how I review films. Will the story and the production provide entertainment to those who enjoy the genre? In the case ofLife, wholeheartedly yes! This is a thriller almost from the get-go with some A-listers thrown in for good measure.Lifeis one big beautifully filmed, popcorn-munching, fun and nail-biting ride until the very last frame. My sixteen year old son, a friend's fifteen year old daughter and another reviewer with me, who is female and in her forties absolutely loved it. In fact, the teenage girl said this was probably the best film she'd ever seen.SeeLifeon Imax or a big screen otherwise you'll miss out on a lot. Man, this is a cautionary tale too. We gotta stop thinking we humans can play with nature. When nature bites it's far more terrifying than vampires.Film BlurbLife tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected. LOVING ✪✪✪Opened March 16
Loving was nominated for many prestigious awards and won some, mostly for Ruth Negga's performance as a colored American woman who marries a white man in Virginia in the fifties, when this was illegal. I know, it just seems abhorrent that in our lifetime this is a thing that happened.I'll just pause and get on my soapbox here to mention that this isstillhappening, except insertgay marriagein the box of prejudice. So I don't think we can look at this story and say, "Wow, isn't that terrible." Prejudice is an abhorrent process, no matter what difference is involved. I'm appalled that good friends of mine cannot marry the one they love.Okay, now I'm back being a film critic ...This is a slow film and I personally would have liked to see twenty minutes cut from the 123 minutes run time. That's not to say that the story isn't fascinating. Like all Jeff Nichols films it's about the mood and the colors and watching every emotion play across the actors' faces. I have not loved all of Nichols films, although the 2011Take Shelteris simply one of the finest indie films I've ever seen, so maybe you have to be in the mood for slow and painstakingly drawn characters.Watch the trailer to see if it will grab you. I call this an interesting piece but you could watch it on streaming or DVD too.Film BlurbFrom acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special, Mud, Take Shelter), LOVING celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga), who fell in love and married in 1958, defying Virginia's laws against interracial marriage.Jailed, then banished from their home state, the Lovings spent the next nine years searching for a way back home, taking their civil rights case Loving v Virginia all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry. Their love story has become and inspiration to couples ever since.Driven by powerful performances from Joel Edgerton and Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga, LOVING ia a beautifully crafted, warm-hearted film, at once an urgent, relevant drama and an intimate, tender story of the heart.2017 Academy Award nominations - Best Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role, Ruth Negga2017 Satellite Awards - Winner, Best Actress – Motion Picture, Ruth Negga2017 Golden Globe nominations - Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, Joel Edgerton; Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, Ruth NeggaGRADUATION ✪✪✪Opened March 20
I think I'm getting less tolerant of plodding storylines in my old age. This has some complex themes but watching the lead actor Adrian Titieni slowly wander around the story interfering in his daughter's life just didn't have me riveted. Certainly it did well at Cannes but honestly some of the films that do well there are not for the average filmgoers entertainment. So don't go trust those award-winners.The other reviewers and I and even the program director for Lottery West Film Festival enjoyed a debate on what the last minute of the film actually meant. They assured me if I was correct then that would make the film a cynical commentary on human nature. I'm going with cynical, sorry, which probably says a lot about me.An interesting idea but again too long.Film Blurb‘An intricate, deeply intelligent film.’ The GuardianWinner, Best Director (Cristian Mungiu) – Cannes Film FestivalNominated, Best Film – Cannes Film FestivalA good father in a moral maze. What wouldn’t we do for our kids? Determined to help his brilliant 18-year-old daughter Eliza pass her university entrance exam, respectable doctor Romeo begins to call in favours from friends with influence. One good turn leads to another and before long Romeo is drawn into a circle of favours – the very thing he has spent his life teaching Eliza to avoid. This joint-winner (with Personal Shopper) of the Best Director award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival is a gripping, serious tale by one of Europe’s most brilliant and morally engaged storytellers.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND ✪✪✪Opened March 9
They keep coming back to him because Kong is part of our history, our childhood, and thanks to the remakes, our teenage hood, our twenties, our forties and, well, you get the picture. They are mining the poor ape for all they can get.Have we seen this all before? Yep!But least Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director doesn't insult our intelligence by hidingKong away for the big reveal, like we'd be surprised they can create a realistic gorilla. Kong's there pretty much in the first twenty minutes in a re-enactment of Apocalypse Now take-no-prisoners all out war. Oh yeah, it's set in the sixties so the unsubtle message that war is bad and Vietnam was pointless is brought home throughout. The first two thirds of the film are good fun and the monsters, well, you've never seen monsters done this well. So that's a plus. The cracks start to appear in the last third where the screenwriters run out of ideas and the story devolves into more battles and chest beating, That's the humans not the monkey. Around this point the screenwriters slow the pace so you feel as though the story is dragging it' knuckles across the screen and picking at it's navel.Still if silly action fun with awesome CGI is your entertainment of choice and you're okay with plot holes you can hurl a helicopter through, as well as character motivation with which a bunch of monkeys would take issue, then go right ahead and grab a box of popcorn, (try to stay away from the soda, sugar bad for you) and go enjoy the funky monkey. I've sat through a lot worse in this genre.Film Blurb"Kong: Skull Island" reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts ("The Kings of Summer"). In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific - as beautiful as it is treacherous - unaware that they're crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong. "Kong: Skull Island" stars Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers," "Thor: The Dark World"), Samuel L. Jackson ("The Hateful Eight," "Avengers: Age of Ultron"), Oscar winner Brie Larson ("Room," "Trainwreck"), John Goodman ("Transformers: Age of Extinction," "Argo") and John C. I held fears that this film would not be great as it lost in last year's Cinefest Oz Festival to Girl Asleep, which I thought was extraordinarily amateur. However, what a surprise this one is the winner!Great performances by the young cast alongside the veterans as well as an excellent, moody, screen adaptation from a book. This is Australian cinema showing what it can do. Also filmed in Western Australia. Yay, our industry here is growing.Film BlurbIn the dead of night during the scorching summer of 1969, Charlie is startled when he is woken by local mixed-race outcast Jasper Jones outside his window. Jasper leads him deep into the forest and shows him something that will change his life forever, setting them both on a dangerous journey to solve a mystery that will consume the entire community. In an isolated town where secrecy, gossip and tragedy overwhelm the landscape, Charlie faces family breakdown, finds his first love, and discovers what it means be truly courageous.Stars Angourie Rice, Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette, Levi Miller.Alone in Berlin✪✪✪Opened March 2
I hate to say this but while this film is reasonably interesting, I don't believe there is enough drama in the true story to make a thrilling screen story. We've enjoyed some fabulous and heart-breaking films on the history of WW2 from many perspectives, most notablySon of Saul, which is probably one of the most masterful pieces of cinema you will see.Of course,Emma ThompsonandBrendon GleesonI could watch simply doing their washing up, but the source material, and I hate saying this because these people were still brave and their story is tragic, is not strong enough for this cinematic piece.Film BlurbBased on the international best-seller by Hans Fallada (Every Man Dies Alone), ALONE IN BERLIN shines the light on two ordinary German people who made an extraordinary impact.Berlin, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel (Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson) receive the news that their only son has been killed on the battlefield. Already disillusioned with The Führer and The Fatherland, the loss of their son proves the tipping point and Otto begins a campaign of civil disobedience, writing messages on postcards that urge fellow Germans to resist the Nazi regime.Anna soon partners with Otto and together they covertly distribute hundreds of postcards, left in stairwells and mailboxes across the city. At the head of the Gestapo force trying to track down the dissenters is Escherich (Daniel Brühl) who faces enormous pressure to find, stop and bring the traitors to justice.Acting alone in their unique attempt to turn the tide on German support for the Third Reich, this unassuming couple’s sacrifice became an important element of the German Resistance."... it's the performances ofBrendon Gleeson and Emma Thompsonthat ensure we'll never forget the bravery of Otto and Anna." Well this one snuck under the radar. I hadn't heard anything about it and, in fact, in Australia it wasn't going to get a wide release, although last minute they've gotten the film into a few more cinemas. Why the brilliance of this film isn't being shouted on every billboard is beyond me.This is smart screenwriting, powerful almost exhausting-to-watch acting, a drama that is also a thriller and an exposition, and a story that will leave you debating what happened and why and what did you miss.Director John Madden (2nd Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Debt, Captain Corelli's Mandonlin, Proof) makes some very smart choices in his scenes and editing. I'm going to look out for his future projects. This is a confident director who knows his stuff. First time screenwriter, young Jonathan Perera, bravo. I'm watching you as well.Jessica Chastain deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance, which probably won't happen because the Oscars are now too far away. Shame. Go see this. You will love it and the story will make you question who runs the country. Although we probably understand how lobbying works, this shines a spotlight onto the game. If you lovedSpotlight, The Big Short, Steve JobsandThe Social Networkthis is the film for you.Film BlurbIn the high-stakes world of political power-brokers, Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is the most sought after and formidable lobbyist in D.C. Logan has received rave reviews from most of the reviewers. It's middling to okay for me. I found the story plodding in places, interspersed with some good action and some over the top violence, especially delivered by, and to, the young child star. I'm glad they are retiring Logan.
