Sunderland Short Story Award
A fantastic short story competition has opened up in my home city Sunderland – the Sunderland Short Story Award.
The award is a collaboration between the University of Sunderland and Waterstones and awards £500 to the winner. The competition will be judged by Professor Ailsa Cox of Edge Hill University, the world’s first professor in Short Fiction.
Not from Sunderland? No problem, the contest is open for writers from all over the globe. Entry fee is £5, word limit is 2,500 and entries are welcomed until 1 March 2018. For the younger category (11-17 years old) entry is free and the word limit is 1,500.

Transhuman anthology cover is revealed
A brief but exciting announcement! The Transhuman Science Fiction 2017 Anthology from Gehenna and Hinnom Books will be available at the end of November – and the publishing house has just revealed the cover.
Personally I think it looks amazing – out of the stories I’ve had published, I’m most excited about the one that appears in this book, The Scrap Metal Man.
For the full table of contents, take a look at Gehenna & Hinnom’s website post – and watch this pace for more news on the book.

Interview with Gehenna & Hinnom
Recently I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Gehenna & Hinnom Books, an American-based publisher of horror and science fiction, as part of their author spotlight series.
You can read the interview here.
Gehenna & Hinnom are a publisher I mention a lot on this website. By the end of the month they will have published three of my short stories in anthologies and magazines. They have published a range of anthologies, including Body Horror and collections of work by Philip K. Dick and H.P. Lovecraft. In fact, Lovecraft is so influential for this publisher that his face is actually their logo.
They are a publisher I feel are really going places, so if you like their genres, make sure you visit their website.

Hinnom Magazine Issue 3 is on sale
The latest edition of Hinnom Magazine, from Gehenna & Hinnom Books, is currently available in paperback and ebook on Amazon.
The issue features my Lovecraftian tale Bonjour, Stevie and a few other stories and articles. I haven’t got my hands on it yet, but I’m a huge fan of the publisher, so I can’t wait to read stories by the other authors.
Visit Gehenna & Hinnom’s website to find out more about their publications.

‘Oh, How They Tried’ published in Antimatter Magazine
My dark science fiction/horror story, ‘Oh, How They Tried’, has been published on the excellent Science Fiction and Science Fact online magazine Antimatter Mag.
Read the story here: Oh, How They Tried.
They are a professional rate-paying Flash Fiction site, so publication in here was quite an achievement!
Let me know what you think of it. Hopefully it won’t be the first story I will have published on Antimatter, as I love the concept.

Order the Body Horror Anthology… now!
Gehenna & Hinnom‘s Body Horror 2017 Anthology is now available to order on Amazon!
Not only does it feature some of the most intriguing voices in horror fiction, but it also includes my 4,000 word story ‘Length’, a horror/comedy tale about a man who wishes for things to be a little longer than he can handle, with hideous consequences.

Flash Fiction to be published in Antimatter Magazine
I’m delighted to announce that one of my stories will appear in the excellent flash fiction website Antimatter Magazine.
The magazine is quite a unique one, concentrating on real science articles and encouraging authors to use them as prompts for fiction.
Without giving anything away, my story focuses on the recent news that a breakthrough has been made in tackling 99% of AIDS virus strains.

‘Bonjour, Stevie’ – New story accepted for publication
I have had a third story accepted for publication by Gehenna & Hinnom – following my two acceptances for their anthologies, my latest story ‘Bonjour, Stevie’ will appear in Issue 3 of Hinnom Magazine.
I’m particularly pleased with this one as it is a neo-Lovecraftian story, and will appear in a magazine that is heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft himself. In fact, ‘Bonjour Stevie’ is a Cthulhu Mythos inspired story set in modern day. Without giving too much away before publication, it is written in the form of email communication, so was a bit of a departure from my usual style.
Some kind words have been shared on the publisher’s Facebook page to announce the story:
We would like to congratulate G&H family member David Turton on the acceptance of his innovative and neo-Lovecraftian tale “Bonjour, Stevie” for Hinnom Magazine Issue 003. David had a story featured in our Body Horror Anthology and also has one set for publication in our upcoming Transhuman SF Anthology.
A very unique writer, David can jump between humor and horror as if it were two opposite sides of a thin pond. Come Halloween, the diversity in Hinnom 003’s stories will be dynamic. Make sure to follow David on social media, as he is an author you will likely be seeing a lot of in the future.

David Turton Amazon Author page is live
After writing for around half a year, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve reached a milestone – my Amazon author page is now live!
This includes anything that is officially published on Amazon, and at time of writing includes Gehenna and Hinnom’s Body Horror Anthology (available to pre-order) and Issue 11 of Massacre Magazine.
Also to appear on this page in due course will be Gehenna & Hinnom’s Transhuman Anthology (due November 2017), Children, Churches and Daddies magazine and Down in the Dirt Magazine (both March 2018).
I’m hoping to add much more to this page as time goes on!
