Man Caves
“Let’s make a managerial decision and have a boardroom meeting in the Beer Shed where the rules are BYO beer or leave your money on the fridge…” quote from Avoiding the Pity Party Wikipedia says man caves are: A manspace, and less commonly a manland or mantuary is a male retreat or sanctuary in a home, such as a specially equipped garage, spare bedroom, or basement. Urban Dictionary says man caves are: An area of a dwelling reserved for a male to be away from the rest of the household, to involve himself in certain hobbies without interruption. This area is decorated by the male without interference from any female. There’s plenty Read more

Boys & Bedrooms
“…trapped in the pink-wall-horror-titus bedroom, garnished with nightmarish childhood posters…” from Avoiding The Pity Party Were you a little girl who liked pink? Pink walls. Pink flowers on your curtains, sheets, and on your pillows? Or you have a daughter who lets you buy the pink and purple flower cushions and matching bed cover, where stuffed teddies lay in wait during the day. Pink bunny slippers rest side by side at the foot of the bed, below a set of pink flannelette pyjamas. Can’t you just picture it? Now, picture that same room twenty years later… Slightly sun-burnt yellowed curtains. Stuffed toys are missing an eye or an ear with the stitching Read more

Breakup Buddies
Let’s talks about the friends you dance with while singing at the top of your voices. The friends you drink with and share secrets with. They give the words of wisdom even when you don’t want to hear it. They support you in the background and perhaps become part of your wedding… They come in many shapes, sizes, and ages. And they may come in and out of your life through your various stages of growth. But when you catch-up after a long absence, the conversation is picked up as if it was only yesterday. It’s where you share that same sense of familiarity of ever-lasting friendship, where they’ve been with Read more

Breakup Blues
“She had nothing else but to become a survivor, learning the art of overcoming betrayal…” Avoiding The Pity Party Welcome to part II of the Breakup Blues & The Honeymoon of Hurt Recovery Tour! I won’t go through all the various stages of the Breakup Blues. It depends upon the individual if you go through one, three, or reinvent thirteen levels of the process. Everyone is different. There is stage one – the shock factor, like I wrote about in Breakup Blues I, The Honeymoon of Hurt. Then once you’ve gone through the denial stage you then suffer through the tears and tissues stage, or it’s the ice-cream and the Read more

Honeymoon Of Hurt
Your heart hurts. Your ribs and shoulders ache. Your nose is sore from tearing up tissues and your eyes are gritty. You can’t sleep. Can’t eat. And your throat hurts to swallow. All because that beautiful bond once shared with that special someone is broken, and life has changed overnight. Welcome to… The Honeymoon of Hurt. It’s stage one of the ‘Breakup Blues’. You either stay in bed or camp on the couch wearing the same clothes. Tissues are always at hand, drowning in your feelings. Your favourite stuffed toy or pillow is your huggable Read more

Happy Launch Day
Those days that you ask yourself do you or don’t you face those fears. The questions of going beyond your comfort zone. To take that first step. Daring to try and make your dreams come true is scary and exhilarating at the same time. Like mine… and so here it is – my debut novel: Avoiding The Pity Party When the Bride finally learns to say No… Outing her cheating fiancé in the middle of her marriage ceremony was not how Deanne Harrison planned to spend her day as a bride. Which got worse, when the evening ends with Deanne sharing a perfect kiss with the handsome stranger, Sean. Since that fateful day, Read more

I’m Out!
What does it mean to out? Out is the opposite of in. Yet, to out someone has so many meanings these days. The Collins English Dictionary says: “An outing is a short enjoyable trip, usually with a group of people, away from your home, school, or place of work. One evening, she made a rare outing to the local discotheque…” Rare all right – discotheque? Are there any still around? According to Wikipedia: “Coming out of the closet, or simply coming out, is a metaphor for LGBT people’s self-disclosure of their sexual orientation or of their gender identity …” From the Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary: “… to out someone — to discover someone’s opinions or Read more

Cupid’s Caterers
Next week is Valentine’s Day – like you didn’t already know that! So I’ll spare you the history lesson of its originality of why it is such a day when we know it’s a day for celebrating romance. It’s where Hallmark creates gazillions of cardboard motifs. Chocolatiers’ bundle their bounty in pretty boxes. Restaurant’s polish off their menus and chinaware. It’s also where flowers are picked, preened, wrapped with ribbon, and then delivered in the name of Cupid. Of course, for that special romantic occasion, you could pluck a wildflower from a field. Or you can call upon the creative geniuses who are part of Cupid’s army, catering to the Read more
