RM Reads – July 2025 Edition
Quick reviews and shout-outs for the books read this month. July had two classics Asimov and Hesse and modern trilogies in sci fi and mystery/suspense. Follow me on Goodreads as I fall behind in my reading challenge. I’ve read 47/100 books, so I’m nine books behind. Those Grant books were 600 pages each though!

Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant
Feed, Deadline, and Blackout by Mira Grant.
I listened to the audiobook of Feed in 2017 while editing Chasing a Cure. I bought the chunky paperbacks of the next two and they sat on shelves until I devoured them this last week. I love zombie books that aren’t about zombies. Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant and I will be Necronomicon this September.
What Happened to Mia Davis? by KT Carlisle
Reasonable, Forget-Me-Not, and Unhinged by K.T. Carlisle
This trilogy of books answers the question of the series title–What Happened to Mia Davis? The first two books have been so twisty and well-planned! Death, cheating, and lies abound. Mystery/Suspense is a tricky genre and this is a spectacular debut. Unhinged arrived today so I’ll be lost in that one!
Siddhartha by Hermann HesseMy first psychiatrist told me reading this book and going to parks would cure my depression. If it was that important, he probably should have given me a copy of Siddhartha and met me in a park. Anyway, I finally got around to reading it 19 years later. I guess I’ll go outside too.
The Stars, Like Dust by Isaac AsimovThe most I ever hear about the Galactic Empire trilogy is that it was written before his renown Foundation series. People are being nice by saying that. Don’t be a completionist. Skip this and go to the Foundation series. The Stars, Like Dust is early Asimov and the misogyny and nationalism are the most entertaining parts.

Writers of the Ridge
Writers of the Ridge is the formal name of the informal writing group with writers based along the Lake Wales Ridge. Writing can be a lonely thing, and navigating a business intimidating. It has been fun to bounce ideas off of people who have the same goals and reading each other’s work. If you want to do something, I encourage you to find your people. Maybe that’s the treasure all along.

Beach House Books and More Anniversary Party
Beach House Book Bash!Have you been to Beach House Books and More in Sebring?
Saturday is the perfect day for a visit. It’s National Independent Bookstore Day and Beach House Books and More’s anniversary. Even better, between 10am-2pm, authors will be camped out in their tents to offer and sign their wares. There will be free raffles and books galore.
Free to attend and medical-building strength Air Conditioning inside. Beach House Books and More is located at 3210 Physicians Way in Sebring FL. Swing by before the Blueberry Festival!

Did She Put On Pants?
Did she put on pants?In 2022, I embarked on a two (2) year mission to make $34K/year (a “living” in my county) solely on writing. If I was making less than that, I’d “put on pants and find a real, soul-crushing job.”
Did I make $34K/year on May 1, 2024?
No.
Did I put on pants?
No.
Did I realize I already had a real, soul-crushing job and keep writing?
Yes.
My goals and life are different now. If you’re curious about the financials of indie writing, I post financial transparency reports on my Patreon and Bob McGough posts his on his blog. Spoiler Alert: It’s not great.
