Portland, OR: Powell’s!

My Portland roadies! Or more specifically, Powell’s in Beaverton. We had a wonderful crowd despite the agonizing traffic due to 23 being shut down. Both Richard Kadrey and I were late, but everyone was so patient and all the books were signed. (Just click the pictured to get to the higher res copy.)

The crowd, showing off their copies. We’re a few weeks out from the drop date now, and everyone is being really good about no spoilers in the Q&A, but I’m fielding more at my table when I sign. (And that’s ok!)

PR1

Richard Kadrey (The Getaway God) and I in the Q&A. Someone asked why were we doing events together when we could both hold events on our own, and we kind of looked at each other and shrugged. It’s all about widening our respective demographics. :-)

PO4

I remember this family from my previous visits to Portland. And yes, they read the books. :-)

PR2

We got tomatoes! Even Pre-turn tomatoes!

PR3

Peter, Me, Richard, and Renee. If you’re even in the Beaverton store, they’ll help you find what you need. They run a fabulous event. I left lots of signed stock, so if the traffic killed your plans, they do have a signed book, first edition!

PR5

Thank you so much for your generosity. These will be going to a local food bank. It is amazing the smiles I see when you are dropping them off. You guys are truly the best.

Al gets the last word

SuddenBacktrackSome of you may have seen my FB post yesterday about the last Hollows short, Sudden Backtrack, popping up for pre-order. Really quick, it is a short story scheduled to be released 10/28, and it will be available across all devices, including your laptop if you download the right app. DON’T read it until after reading The Witch With No Name. You’re going to want Al to have the last word, too.

Did I expect this? No! I finished the last chapter of WWNN, did the copy edit, line edit–happy with Rachel bringing together the thoughts and emotions that I wanted the story to end with. And when I thought I was done, the file closed and tucked away, Al taps me on the shoulder and tells me that I’ve got to become brave and put the last bit of story out there, that I can’t be selfish and keep it to myself as I sometimes do. (And yes, I sometimes keep parts of the story just for myself.)

And so Sudden Backtrack evolved. It’s not a lot of pages, but it does answer why.

Banned book week

I was in Nicola’s yesterday signing the latest orders of The Witch With No Name and spotted their banned book display. Guy circled it, scratching his head at some of the titles that were considered “banable”, but none of them surprised me. (laugh)

I’ve seen a couple of displays like this on line, but this is my first live sighting.

And a fun link to why some books were banned: Huh?

Shifting my internal clock

I’m making a slight push this week while I’m at home to shift my internal clock a few hours so the jump to West Coast time next week won’t be as  killer. So far it’s not been an issue getting up later as I’m dead tired from last week, and even if I manage to shift just an hour, it will help.

WebDay one at home had me in the garden since it was a weekend, checking out the green stuff and starting a slow “putting to bed” of everything. The bleeding hearts are finally done and in the compost pile, and I’m starting to cut back some of the summer flowering plants down to their wintering rosettas. Sedum and fall clematis are giving the bees something to eat, but for the most part, things are closing up. I’m ready for it. The winter fish tank for my koi is halfway set up, mostly so I can bring the water plants in that I want to keep. The fish can overwinter just fine out there, but I like the company. I’ll probably get it running before I leave, but not put the fish in until I get back.

SignedDay two had me in the house making maple candy and rearranging the furniture in the living room since it was cold and rainy. Besides, I wanted to get some pictures up on the wall that I’d been promising to do for the last fourteen months. Mmmm, maple candy. (My recipe is in the Hollows Insider if you’re interested.) It’s usually a spring thing for me, but I wanted something to bring from home to carry me through on this last leg, and this will do nicely.

The door is closing on those personalized first-edition, blue butterflies out at Nicola’s. Don’t panic. They have lots of copies to mail out, and plenty for the final Hollows event the night before Halloween. But I can’t keep going in forever, and if you want one, now is a good time to order as I will be going in to personalize the orders that came in while I was on tour.  I believe that Barnes and Noble still have their copies as well. The B&N copies won’t be personalized, but the signature is real, each one hand penned, not stamped or copied from a master copy.

Today, though, I plan to sit at my desk and try to remember where I was with Peri. Maybe get a little dialog down. The touring is great, but this–this right here before me today–is what I love to do.

Birmingham, Books-A-Million

Birmingham! You were so welcoming. I was so surprised to see the number of tour t’s, but Guy wasn’t. ;-) We had a wonderful event with the tote giveaways and lots of great questions. I ran into my most-frequent event go’er (ten signings and counting!) and lots of event newbies. I left lots of signed stock, so if you missed the event, you still have a chance to pick up one for yourself.

BirminghamRoadies

It’s hard to see, but we got TONS of tomatoes. Thank you so much, guys, for being so generous!

BirminghamTomatoesI’ve got a few pictures here, but to see them all, jump on over to the website.

Warren Public Library, Bowling Green

Warren Public LIbrary was a great crowd! I was concerned that the two and a half hour drive between Bowling Green and Lexington Jo-Beth might canabalize each other, but both venues were well attended. We had a little difficulty finding the totes, so we had a longer than usual Q&A, but the questions were great, and I don’t think anyone minded–especially when Guy gave me a workout running back and forth to give them away.

WarrenroadiesLHT

My Bowling Green roadies! Thanks guys for coming out to get your book signed. Apparently we cleaned Bowling Green out of those first edition blue butterfliy copies, but there are lots in Lexington Jo-Beth.

And again your generocity was gratifying. Thank you, everyone who brought out tomatoes for the canned food drive. You never cease to amaze me.

MORE EVENT PHOTOS

Bowling Green was cleaned out of copies, but I left a lot of signed copies at Lexington, and if you want one personalized to you, I’ll be heading home to wash my clothes and stop in at Nicola’s later this week. If you order one right now, they will get it out ASAP. :-)

And they are guaranteed first edition with those blue butterflies.

Jo-Beth, Lexington

My Jo-Beth roadies! I wasn’t sure how a noon signing during the weekday, but you guys came out to get your books signed! Jo-Beth had lots of those first-edition, blue butterfly copies, and I left a bunch of them for you if you weren’t able to get out to the event. I was surprised at how many familiar faces I recognized. :-)  (Just click the image to get to the higher resolution copy.)

JoBethRoadiesLHT

Jo-Beth was having a food drive of their own going on. Thanks guys for bringing in the tomatoes! They are much appreciated.

From Jo-Beth, I ran over to Bowling Green for the Warren library event. I’ll have those photos up and ready for you later, but for the rest of the pictures from Jo-Beth, just pop over to the website. :-) I left lots of signed stock, so if you missed out, they can take care of you.

I’m not sure if I gave you this interview yet or not. It has an audio link as well.

Tampa, Barnes and Noble

Barnes and Noble in Tampa was fantastic! I had a nice group of roadies with some familiar faces among them. The last time I’d been in the area was way back at a Romantic Times conference, so there were lots of back list titles to sign. I left lots of signed books which they are going to distribute to other Barnes and Nobels in the area, so if you missed the event, it’s not too late to get a blue-butterfly, first edition copy.

TampaRoadiesLHT

We had a mixup in communication resulting in me tomatoing up the wrong store twice, but we still had some readers bring in a nice batch of tomatoes that will go to the local foodbank. Thank you, guys. You truly are the best.

My Orlando roadies! It was great to see all you guys. Thank you for coming on out. It was a huge signing. :-) (Just click for a high resolution photo for yourself.) I left lots of signed stock, and they told me they would send some to the other Barnes and Nobles in the area, so if you’re in the area, there are signed first-editions to be had.
