Pretty Woman
Fakhra Younus was an attractive young woman. If she'd been lucky, she might have become a model. But she grew up in poverty in Pakistan, a conservative country run by powerful men. Her mother was a heroin addict. As a young teenager, Fakhra went to work as a dancing girl in a Karachi red-light district.
In Pakistan, dancing girl is a euphemism for prostitute. She did this to support her family. Then, at the age of 18, Fakhra followed the script of Pretty Woman. In 1997, she married a rich client, Bilal Khar. That was a big mistake.

Bad-luck Belle or diabolical killer?
Belle wasn't the prettiest woman around, but she attracted plenty of men. A sturdy hard-working hog farmer, she weighed 250 pounds. She married four times and bore several children, but suffered a series of tragedies. Her neighbors in La Porte, Indiana, felt sorry for her. How much heartbreak could one woman endure?
Belle was forty-eight when tragedy struck again. On April 28, 1908, fire destroyed her farmhouse. Police found four bodies in the basement. Three were identified as Belle's young children. They assumed the fourth was Belle, but identification was difficult. The head was missing. Questions arose. It wasn't the first time.

But I Loved him ...
Dawnette Knight was obsessed with Michael Douglas. She claims to have met the actor in 2002 at a party in Florida. She knew Douglas was married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, and she didn't like it.
Zeta-Jones, who won an Oscar in 2003 for her role in "Chicago," became her hated enemy. Between 2003 and 2004, Knight sent 19 threatening letters to Zeta-Jones describing what would happen to her. One said: "We are going to slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs."

Greatest Mob Hits, a Frank Renzi post
When I say greatest hits, I'm not talking Frank Sinatra singing My Way. A new museum opened yesterday in Las Vegas. The Mob Museum. It cost $42 million, and it opened on the 83rd anniversary of the St. Valentine's Massacre in 1929.
I didn't want to spoil your chocolate with anything bloody or gruesome so I waited a day to put up the post. The museum features a thrilling lineup of mobsters, past and present, and their bloody exploits.

Devoted husband or sick psychopath?
Married in 1985, Charles and Carol Stuart were a handsome successful couple. In 1989 they were expecting their first child.
Charles managed the Kakas Furs on upscale Newbury Street in Boston's Back Bay. Carol, a graduate of Boston College, was a lawyer.
On the night of October 23, the couple left a childbirth class at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and headed home. They never made it.

She didn't have an enemy in the world
In 1989 Rebecca Schaeffer, co-star of the TV sitcom My Sister Sam, was a twenty-one year old actress on her way up, having recently finished a film directed by Dyan Cannon.
On July 18, 1989, her doorbell rang. Because the apartment complex intercom wasn't working, she went downstairs to see who it was and saw a young man in a yellow shirt outside the door. She didn't know him and returned to her apartment.
An hour later, her bell rang again. She went down to the door and saw the same man. This time she opened the door and told him he was wasting her time. That was a mistake.

A Grand-Slam Obsession
The first time Ruth Ann Steinhagen laid eyes on Eddie Waitkus she fell in love with him. In 1946, Eddie was the Chicago Cubs first-baseman. Sixteen-year-old Ruth Ann began going to Cubs games with friends. After collecting hundreds of newspaper pictures and articles, she built a shrine to him in her bedroom and often set an extra place at the dinner table for him.
When Eddie was traded to the Phillies in 1948, Ruth Ann cried and said she didn't want to live. Annoyed that her parents sent her to a psychiatrist, the 19-year-old got her own apartment.
Knowing the Phillies would play the Cubs in Chicago in June 1949, she decided it was time to meet Eddie. She reserved a room under the name Ruth Ann Burns at the hotel where the Phillies would be staying.
She also bought a rifle at a pawnshop.

The Last Supper
Today is Blog Action Day October 16, 2011. This year it coincides with World Food Day and the topic is Food. So I've put up a post on my Dark Deeds blog, yes, even there we can talk about ... The Last Supper
Death row inmates are customarily granted a final meal request before being executed. On September 14, 2011, Laurence Brewer [mug shot at right] was scheduled to die in a Texas prison. He ordered quite a meal ...

Please spread the word: The official Blog Action Day tag is #BAD11 [that's BAD and the # 11]
Prior to Thanksgiving, I'll be teaming up with a Bed & Breakfast to do a book-signing/charity event to raise money for their food pantry. If you're an author, perhaps you could do a similar event. In any case, please consider donating to your local food pantry. There are a lot of hungry people out there.
And have a nice supper!
