“Illustrations poétiques et sombres” @Vapeur d’Encres

My Alice illustrations are on show for the first time in Lyon (France)! The quirky exhibition space/cabinet of curiosity Vapeur d’Encres will host all 24 of them for two months. You can also grab prints and the book! Feel free to share your pictures with me!

For those of you who won’t be able to go, here’s a few pictures of the opening night (the ‘official’ ones are not released yet, these are courtesy of my sister!), you’ll also be able to grab prints on my etsy shop very soon – for the book, you already know that it’s available on Amazon.

 

This feels like a very satisfying achievement. I can’t wait to work with Erebus Society and Vapeur d’Encres again!

A beautiful collaboration with the independent edition house Erebus Society and 6 months of hardwork: you can now order this original edition of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass on Amazon! It contains the 24 illustrations I’ve been working on this first half of the year.

This feels like a huge achievement and I am very proud of the result! I am glad that I was given total freedom and that my dark/creepy ideas were very well received (well… it was more that they were in line with the style of Erebus Society). This is probably the best project I worked on so far; it’s really me and it’s a complete series of illustrations, thought through and consistant. Thanks Constantin for giving me this opportunity!

Une belle collaboration avec la maison d’éditions indépendante Erebus Society et 6 mois de travail acharné: vous pouvez maintenant commander cette édition originale d’Alice au pays des Merveilles et De l’Autre Côté du Miroir sur Amazon ! Le livre contient l’oeuvre originale de Lewis Carroll en anglais, accompagnée des 24 illustrations sur lesquelles j’ai travaillé ce prmier semestre 2017.

Je suis plutôt fière du résultat, et être publiée est très satisfaisant ! Je suis contente d’avoir pu travailler en toute liberté du début à la fin, et que mes idées glauques aient été acceptées sans conditions (il faut dire que le bizarre et l’occulte est le fond de commerce d’Erebus Society !). Ce projet est sans doute l’un de mes préférés. Il me ressemble, et c’est une série d’illustration complète, consistante dans sa forme, pensée comme un tout. Merci Constantin de m’avoir offert cette opportunité !

Chapter 3 – Looking Glass Insects

‘Well, there’s the Horse-fly,’ Alice began, counting off the names on her fingers.

‘All right,’ said the Gnat: ‘half way up that bush, you’ll see a Rocking-horse-fly, if you look. It’s made entirely of wood, and gets about by swinging itself from branch to branch.’

‘What does it live on?’ Alice asked, with great curiosity.

‘Sap and sawdust,’ said the Gnat. ‘Go on with the list.’

Alice looked up at the Rocking-horse-fly with great interest, and made up her mind that it must have been just repainted, it looked so bright and sticky; and then she went on.

‘And there’s the Dragon-fly.’

‘Look on the branch above your head,’ said the Gnat, ‘and there you’ll find a snap-dragon-fly. Its body is made of plum-pudding, its wings of holly-leaves, and its head is a raisin burning in brandy.’

‘And what does it live on?’

‘Frumenty and mince pie,’ the Gnat replied; ‘and it makes its nest in a Christmas box.’

Chapter 6 – Pig and Pepper

I am back with you to lift the mystery over the few teaser pictures and explanations you might have seen on my instagram or facebook page. It took about 6 months to complete this project (as I could only spent nights and week-ends on it), and it kind of feel like I’ve given birth to a particularly gloomy baby – gloomy being a good thing… right?

I was lucky to get in contact with Erebus Society, a books and art publication company with a passion for the occult and dark aesthetics, when they were looking for novel illustrators. My love for bones matched their expectations and I was charged with the illustrations for Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I was given a lot of freedom and the publisher was very receptive to my ideas. This collaboration resulted in a series of 24 inside black and white illustrations as well as a (slightly!) coloured front page. I really challenged myself, exploring chimeras, bone sculptures, and ornate frames (I thought I’d never have the patience to finish these!), all in A4 and all in ink.

Currently being edited, the book should be available mid-July both in English and French.

As a way to apologise for my long absence, I’ll post one illustration every two weeks until the book’s publication, and the rest after the collection’s exhibition in the gallery Vapeur d’Encres (Lyon) starting on the 26th of August. Prints will be available as soon as the book is out too – watch this space!

Je suis de retour pour enfin lever le mystère sur les images et bribes d’explications que vous avez pu voir sur mes pages instagram ou facebook. J’ai passé 6 mois sur ce projet (avec seulement mes nuits et week-ends disponibles…), et j’ai un peu l’impression d’avoir pondu un gros bébé glauque – mais le glauque c’est le bien, n’est-ce pas ?

J’ai eu la chance d’entrer en contact avec Erebus Society, une maison d’édition passionnée par l’occulte et les esthétiques sombres, alors qu’ils recherchaient des illustrateurs pour des romans classiques. Mon amour des os et des choses mortes concordait avec leur attentes, et ils m’ont donné la charge d’illustrer Alice au Pays des Merveilles et De l’Autre Côté du Miroir. J’ai eu énormément de liberté et la chance que l’éditeur soit très réceptif aux idées que je proposais. Au final, 24 illustrations intérieures en noir et blanc (une par chapitre) ainsi qu’une couverture en couleur (un peu, bon) seront réalisées. Je me suis vraiment challengée, expérimentant avec des chimères, des sculptures osseuses, et des cadres très ornés (voire bien trop ornés, j’ai cru que j’en viendrais jamais à bout), tous en format A4 et à l’encre.

Le bouquin est en cours d’édition et devrait être dispo mi-juillet en anglais ET en français !

Histoire de me faire pardonner pour ma longue absence, je posterais une illu toutes les deux semaines jusqu’à la publication du livre et le reste après l’expo de la collection à la galerie lyonnaise Vapeurs d’Encres, qui commencera le 26 août. Pour les intéressés, des repros seront aussi disponibles dès que le livre sort !

‘Vapeur d’encres’ – Cabinet of curiosity, exhibition space & tattoo parlour

Those of you who know me in real life know how I like the art: unconventional, borderline, creepy, alternative. Add a few bones and you win my heart.

‘Vapeur d’encres’ (‘Ink’s Steam’) is the name of an art space in the making, in Lyon (France).  It is meant to become a Steampunk exhibition space, with a permanent cabinet of curiosity and tattoo parlour attached to it. A dream came true for the art/bones/tattoo/oddities lover that I am.

Now, the good news: this space approached me for a personal exhibition in September/October! I’m thrilled, especially as the series that I am working on now fits totally the gallery atmosphere!

One thing though: as I said, it is a gallery ‘in the making’. As a self -enterprise from two girls coming from a popular/working class background, they need help. They started a kickstarter to help them get settled: https://fr.ulule.com/vapeurdencres/

Ulule is the French equivalent of kickstarter and works exactly the same way. Giving them just 5€ is already helping them big time (and myself, as I really want to make my show happen) when for us, 5€ (£4,24) only correspond to things such as a lunch, a pint of beer, less than a pack of cigarette, a all-day ticket on a Glasgow bus. Most of us wouldn’t see the difference, right?…

It is very late for a reflexion on the year past, so I’ll just pretend that I live with the Chinese calendar. As you probably noticed, there weren’t many news or finished works to share for the last… 7 months? Well, let me explain, then!

First of all, I’ve been travelling a lot. To other places in Scotland, to London, to Czech Republic, to Ireland, to France. These travels were all part of my creative process; I’ve learnt and seen a lot of very cool and inspiring stuff there. Necessary breaks after I nearly burnt out, did way too much overtime, moved flat and failed on a few professional points.

Many of you know by now, I am working on a comic book, Underland, (after having thought about it for the last few years, I finally took this project seriously). I am spending a lot of time on thinking each detail through, with the help of a very talented writer that I will introduce hopefully very soon. A little outdated info can be found on this blog. more news will come as soon as we’re ready to share them with you!

Aside from Death Wish, I received another movie poster order that turned out to be draining. Once again, I learnt the hard way that I should make sure that people ordering me pieces actually understand what kind of art I make or I’ll end up dealing with unreasonable requests (for free). I actually finished it this morning, and it felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I won’t share any visuals here as it is really not in sync with my line of work and most of my creative choices on the design were refused. Never again!

The good news is that I can now fully focus on a major order: 25 (creepy!) ink illustrations for a beautiful edition of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Expect weird bones in a Cabinet of Curiosity atmosphere! The series will be exhibited in an exciting new alternative art venue in Lyon this autumn (if it gets to open in time, fingers crossed!).

A few new witches and wizards portraits are planned too. I just need to make time for them! They’ll be them exhibited at The Unexpected Artist in St Enoch Shopping Centre (Glasgow).

I’ve also got to prepare pieces for the Expressive Collective exhibition in London. I first planned to experiment on wax 3D pieces but now I am not sure that I’ll have time for this… Any advice on structure wires and translucent, thick, hard varnish welcome!

Finally, I started applying to publications and exhibitions again. Busy week ends to come for months!

C’est déjà très tard pour faire un bilan de l’année passée, mais je vais juste prétendre que je vis selon le calendrier chinois. Vous l’aurez remarqué, je n’ai pas trop posté de news ou de nouvelles pièces ces sept derniers mois… Laissez-moi vous expliquer !

Déjà, j’ai pas mal voyagé, dans d’autres coins de l’Ecosse, à Londres, en République Tchèque, en Irlande, en France. Ces voyages s’inscrivent dans mon processus créatif ; j’ai énormément appris et pu voir des trucs super inspirants. Ils étaient aussi nécessaires alors que j’étais au bord du burn out, entre les heures sup trop nombreuses, mon déménagement et divers échecs professionnels.

Pas mal d’entre vous le savent maintenant, je travaille sur une BD, Underland (après avoir pensé le projet en long et en large ces dernières années, je me suis enfin lancée dedans sérieusement). Je passe énormément de temps à peaufiner le moindre détail et je me suis associée à un « écrivain+ » très talentueux que j’espère pouvoir présenter très bientôt. Quelques infos un peu périmées peuvent se trouver sur cet autre blog. Mises à jour dès que possible ! Patience !

En plus de Death Wish, j’ai reçu une autre commande de poster pour un film. Une fois encore, j’ai appris ma leçon à la manière dure : toujours être certaine que les commanditaires comprennent quel genre d’art je fais, ou je me retrouverais à nouveau à devoir bricoler sur des exigences vraiment pas raisonnables (et gratuitement en plus). J’ai fini ce travail laborieux ce matin, et j’ai l’impression d’un poids en moins sur mes épaules. Je ne partagerais pas d’image ici, car cette pièce ne correspond pas du tout à ma ligne artistique et tous mes choix créatifs y ont été refusés. (En gros : c’est du caca.)

La bonne nouvelle, c’est que je peux maintenant me concentrer (presque !) exclusivement sur une commande majeure : 25 (creepy !) illustrations à l’encre pour une belle édition d’Alice au Pays des Merveilles et De l’Autre Côté du Miroir. Attendez-vous à des os tordus, des squelettes étranges, et une atmosphère de cabinet de curiosités ! La série devrait être exposée cette automne à Lyon dans un tout nouvel espace alternatif dédié à l’art, si tout se passe bien pour eux ! (et ils le méritent, donc croisons les doigts !)

Quelques portraits de sorcières et sorciers sont prévus pour bientôt. En gros, il faut juste que je trouve un moment pour les faire ! Ils seront exposés à la galerie The Unexpected Artist à Glasgow.

En plus de tout ça, il faut que je commence à me préparer pour l’expo londonienne du Expressive Collective. J’avais d’abord prévu d’expérimenter sur des pièces en 3D à la cire, mais je ne pense pas avoir le temps du tout. Ceci dit, je prends tout conseil sur des câbles de structure fins et sur du vernis à la fois transparent, épais et solide !

Enfin, j’ai recommencé à postuler à des publications et des expos. J’ai l’impression que les week ends à venir vont être très, très chargés.

Death Wish

I feel kinda bad to have abandonned this place for so long! My only excuse is that life happened, which is lame, I know. But I come back with another movie poster currently entering festivals so it’s not this bad!

Death Wish is a short horror film by Maya Korn that has a very  strong B series/80’s feeling about it, and it’s witty and fun, with really cool characters. I feel so blessed every time I get to work with inspiring people like Maya!

Regarding other projects, I have another movie poster in progress, I found a very skilled writer to help me with Underland and I just got a series of 25 illustrations to realise hopefully before May, if Life would be so kind as to allow me to do so. I promise I will keep you updated. I’m not dead I only look that way.

Je me sens un peu mal d’avoir abandonné cet endroit pendant si longtemps ! Ma seule excuse est pitoyable, mais ma vie de tout les jours a pris bien trop de place ces derniers temps. Par contre, je reviens avec un nouveau poster pour un film soumis à des festivals en ce moment même !

Death Wish est un court métrage d’horreur par Maya Korn, qui fait très série B/années 80, mais qui est marrant et bien écrit, avec des persos super cool. Je me sens tellement chanceuse à chaque fois que j’ai l’occasion de travailler avec des gens aussi créatifs et inspirants que Maya !

En ce qui concerne mes autres projets, j’ai un autre poster de film sur le feu, je me suis associée à un écrivain talentueux pour Underland et je viens juste de signer pour 25 illustrations que j’arriverais à créer avant le mois de mai, si la vie de tout les jour veut bien être assez sympa pour me le permettre. Je vous promets que je vous tiendrais au courant !

J’ai créé un blog en parallèle à celui-ci pour montrer le développement de mon projet BD, Underland, et pour éviter de noyer ce blog-là d’info qui n’intéresseraient pas forcément tout le monde. Persona @The Makers Gallery&Bistro Alloa

Happy to announce that I’ll be part of the portrait exhibition Persona at the Makers Gallery and Bistro (Alloa, Scotland) from the 5th of July to the 1st of October! I’ll be showing my two witches for the first time and my last old couple – also ordered cheap cards to sell along.

Small update on the comics advancement: although doing a lot of overtime again at work, I find the time to frame the story and started working on the design of the main characters

The Underland Project

For those of you who know me in real life, you know how much I am into comics. I’m a massive fan of Franco-Belgian bande dessinées and I discovered a lot of awesome comics since I moved to the UK. My favourite publisher is Image (I’m currently following Wayward, They’re not like us and Tokyo Ghost (Sean Murphy! *0*)) but I also discovered a lot a indie absolute treasures like Bust.

Now, if you’ve known me since I’m a kid, you know that I always wanted to write my own comic book. When I was about 8, I wrote one page stories about a cook gerbil talking to its own living tail. When I was a teenager, I imagined a kind of soap-drama story (that I never wrote) in a futuristic city taken over by gangsters where a group of 5 super-heroins where saving the day. For about 3 years now, I have a more serious comic book project in my mind. Although super busy at work at the moment with 18 days long weeks, I took the time of writing the storyline during my breaks and this weekend (my first time off this month!), sitting by the river under the sun, I started to think over the layout and content of the first chapter. I hope to have it ready by October and to publish a case a day – just like Freakangel did – for Inktober. Of course -hopefully- I’ll give you sneak peaks of the characters/lanscape design before then!

The story takes place in a post-apocalyptique world, where the pollution radically transformed the planet, but also the social order. Two kind of societies live next to each other without ever meeting for more than a hundred years, one on the ground – the ‘Underland’ – the other on top of a massive tower raising above the smog. Then one day, a man immediately considered as the Sun’s messiah fell through the smog, changing the life of both worlds in a way no one expected.

I’ll probably create a side blog to publish it- I’ll let you know in October!

Pour ceux d’entre vous qui me connaissent dans la vraie vie, vous savez à quel point j’aime les BD, qu’elles soient franco-belges ou dans le format américain des ‘comics’. Et si vous me connaissez depuis que je suis petite, vous savez sûrement que j’ai toujours voulu écrire ma propre BD. Quand j’avais 8-9 ans, je dessinais ces histoires d’une page où une souris parlait à sa queue. Quand j’étais ado, j’avais imaginé cette histoire emo-dramadique (jamais écrite…), dans une ville futuriste gérée par des gangsters où 5 super-héroïnes défendaient la veuve et l’orphelin.

Depuis plus ou moins trois ans, un projet un peu plus sérieux est né dans un coin de mon cerveau. Bien que j’étais super-occupée avec mon taf qui me fait faire des heures sup de malade (coucou la semaine de 18 jours), j’avais trouvé le temps et l’inspiration pour planifier le fil de l’histoire et la diviser en chapitres durant mes pauses. Et ce weekend (mon premier ce mois de mai, d’où ma relative absence…), j’ai commencé à penser à la mise en page et au contenu du premier chapitre, assise sous le soleil au bord de la rivière. J’espère qu’il sera près d’ici octobre, pour pouvoir publier une case par jour pour Inktober (à la manière de Freakangel – et si vous connaissez pas, croyez moi, vous avez très envie de lire cette BD). Bien sûr d’ici là, j’espère bien vous poster des planches de créations de personnages et de paysages !

L’histoire se passe dans un univers post-apocalyptique, où la pollution a radicalement transformé la planète, mais aussi l’ordre social. Deux sociétés cohabitent sans jamais se rencontrer pendant plus d’une centaine d’années, l’une vit sur terre – “Le monde d’en bas” – l’autre se trouve en haut d’immenses tours qui dépassent du brouillard toxique qui recouvre la planète. Puis un beau jour, un homme immédiatement considéré comme un messie du Soleil tombe à travers le brouillard, changeant de manière inattendue la vie des deux mondes coexistants.

Je créerais probablement un blog séparé pour publier cette histoire – à vous de me dire si vous êtes intéressés par une version française !
