Lifting & Raising

Before we start today’s blog post, let me put the disclaimer out early…

Disclaimer: I am going to upset some women with this post. Some of you are going to get all defensive, and I know many of you are going to roll your eyes, give real side eye and suck your teeth. I knew all of this before I decided to write on this topic. But guess what… I don’t really care. It is not about you, Boo. It’s about all of us as a people/our human existence. At the end of the day, I am always going to write my...

Forgiveness is Not a Gift

A few months back, I wrote a blog post about forgiveness and how important it was. And though I promised myself to write part two, I just couldn’t. Writing for me is very personal and even when I try not to, parts of me still get engrained into my words, which made writing on forgiveness near impossible. I understood the forgiveness theory and yes, I guess I could have tied and twisted words together and made it pretty, but that is not my style. I believe that words are powerful, and they hol...

The Nine Days That My Breast Stood Still (Part Two)

Note to self… the next time I write Part One for a blog post, I need to post part two the same day [Some of you made it very clear that you did not plan to wait too long for part two.] Nonetheless, thank you for all my readers who reached out to me right after reading part one. What really touches my heart were the many…. many conversations that came out of it, covering topics from breast cancer, women’s health and the care women receive from health professionals, to taking time to focus on y...

The Nine Days That My Breast Stood Still (Part One)

(Sunday March 4th, 2018) …. I believe that the Universe provides subtle hints to where our lives will take us. Now that I have the gift of hindsight, I think it sent one to me four days early, and of all places, it was sent to me on the bridge. No, I am not talking about a big metaphor of life [then again maybe I am]. I was literally, physically, and more importantly willingly standing on a swinging bridge. God made no mistakes when he created the earth and everything in it, but whenever I ge...

Lessons from Wakanda

February is now over, and I hope that by now most of you would have already gone out to watch the Black Panther movie [at least once]. Today, I am going to take a little moment to talk about it. Although I could use countless posts to discuss my love for the movie or spend hours debating the movie, the movement and what it means for everyone, there are countless bloggers who have already spoken about those aspects of the Black Panther and, I think, did it justice. If you want to get in-depth...

I sometimes get these moments: Personal Piece

I sometimes get these moments, days and even weeks where my words fight for release. And to any writer that may sound like a good thing, but to be honest, it isn’t always a great feeling and sometimes it can be very intense. The thing is, even though my words are trying to break free, my mind understands the repercussions of that freedom and it tries its best to hold them in. It knows that with each post written, each chapter prepared, each article or interview done, there would be more trans...

BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER…..

This Saturday, after taking my daughter to volleyball practice and watching her attempt to learn a new sport, I felt inspired. You see, my daughter is asthmatic and for years she just did not do sports or anything athletic. Though I have always told my kids that the world was theirs and that I would support them in anything legal, she would always feel as if she couldn’t physically do it and that people would tease her if she wasn’t as good as everyone else. So, imagine my surprise when she c...

Three Year Blog Anniversary: The Journey has just Begun

Today marks Three years since the birth of UnCaged Phoenix. If you had asked me prior to three years ago if I could have imagined that this is what I would be doing, trust me the answer would have been No!!!! Though I grew up with no real barriers to my internal thoughts, the idea of writing them down and presenting them to the world would leave me speechless and for many years without a voice. But then 2015 happened and I found my voice.

Maybe it was the emotional accumulation from my prior...
