Fie Eoin Friday is BACK!

Happy Fie Eoin Friday, Aledans! I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me on the blog, but if you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook, you may have heard the good news: I’m posting the entirety of Fie Eoin FOR FREE on and ! So far, the entirety of the Warrior’s Ceremony is up, and today I’m starting the normal schedule: one scene every Fie Eoin Friday (for obvious reasons), and one scene every Monday or Tuesday. I’m hoping this schedule is both manageable, and keeps the pace of the book moving well enough that readers aren’t bogged down in massively long chapters.

Why am I giving away Fie Eoin for free? As it turns out, I HATED the publishing process with StO, and can’t imagine going through it again with the book of my heart. And I’ve been working on FE for twenty years now (seriously – I started writing it in 2002), so it’s time to get it out there. I’ve always wanted to share Kindra and Kaye with the world, and I’ve been doing just that through Fie Eoin Friday for years. It was time to make it official.

So if you’re interested in the book I started this blog to talk about all those years ago, check it out. Even if you’ve read every FieEoinFriday I’ve posted, I guarantee you’ll find something new (in fact, the scene that posted today has not been read by anyone else. I even forgot that I wrote it until I opened Word and found it there last night). And if you enjoy it, give it a vote, or a star, or tell your friends about it.

Or offer to help me make a new cover, because I’m better with words than images… (current cover art is a commission of Kindra by Stav Ofer, 2006)

Welcome Back, Aledans, it’s good to see you again. Or maybe: Welcome Home. I know I feel that way <3

Movie Star Eyes

Hops Enzor

April 1, 2008 – May 1, 2021

“Movie Star Eyes” – that’s what the tag on the kennel said when we walked in and saw you for the first time. “We can’t get the first dog we see” we said, even though we already knew you were the one. “I don’t want a pitt bull mix,” dad said. “I don’t want a lab,” I said. It turned out you were neither – American Staffordshire Terrier/Boxer, with a little bit of ridgeback mixed in. Seventy pounds of rock solid muscle and love just looking for someone to give it to.

For twelve and a half years you gave us that inexhaustible love. You loved your mom and dad, your brother, Boudin, your kitties (even Pike who didn’t love you back), your chickens, and even a baby squirrel. You gave your love and your blood to save another dog’s life. You got loose once and ran to a little girl, let her grab your ears and scream in your face, and gave her love and kisses until she was laughing so hard she couldn’t stand.

Car rides were your favorite, and you rode across the United States for five days, from one ocean to the other. You crossed The Bridge Of The Gods. You loved adventure, and taking the little paths that forked off from the big ones.

You loved helping dad cook, and you were smart enough to know “tomorrow” and “later”. You thought you were a person, and I think in the ways that count you were.

Hops-Scops the Plops Mops Tops a Lops, you were the best girly a person could ask for, and you will be missed by everyone.

On to the next adventure! We’ll see you again <3

2019 PitchWars Wishlist!

What PitchWars is:

PitchWars is a mentoring program where published/agented authors, editors, or industry interns choose one writer each to spend three months revising their manuscript. It ends in February with an Agent Showcase, where agents can read a pitch/first page and can request to read more.

Who I am:

I’m Rebecca Enzor, an analytical chemist and fantasy author from Charleston, SC, and this year I’m mentoring Adult (and NA) SFF. I’m a huge fan of mermaids SPEAK THE OCEAN, which is basically a mashup of BLACKFISH and THE LITTLE MERMAID. Mermaids at Sea World. It’s full of sciencey goodness, but also a good ol’ heaping of fantasy, which explains the things I love most pretty well. I’m also part of the PUTTING THE SCIENCE IN FICTION anthology by former PitchWars mentor Dan Koboldt, which means I can help you get your science right (or your pseudo-science right-ish, because I love making up pseudo-science).

[image error][image error]

What I’m looking for:

My favorite is low fantasy, bordering on magical
realism. If you have just one magical element in an otherwise normal world, I’m
your girl (like I said, I like science, so realistic fantasy is my jam). I also
like the feel of big, epic stories (THE LIGHT BEARER by Donna Gillespie
is my favorite book and does this so well. FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK is another
example). Low fantasy + epic stories = definitely send it to me!

I love historical fantasy, because it takes the real
and adds magic/mythology (for instance: FROM UNSEEN FIRE by Cass Morris). Same
with contemporary fantasy or paranormal fantasy (although I’m not your
gal for vampires/werewolves/angels/zombies – see below).

I love dark fantasy and light fantasy and humorous
fantasy
. If you have an anti-heroine like Lada from AND I DARKEN? Send her
to me! If you have something that’ll make me feel light and fuzzy like a
fantasy version of WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI? Send it to me! If you have something
that’ll make me laugh out loud like KILL THE FARM BOY? Please send it to me!
The same goes for Sci-fi. Funny Sci-Fi is the best. (MECHANICAL FAILURE by Joe
Zieja is my favorite funny sci-fi)

For Sci-Fi I’m looking for all the pseudo-science! It
needs to make sense, but if you can come up with something that doesn’t
obviously break the universe, send it to me. The more character-centered the better (think A LONG WAY TO A
SMALL, ANGRY PLANET, SEVENEVES, or THE BOBIVERSE trilogy). I love to read hard
sci-fi, but I’m no astrophysicist, so if you don’t know the numbers for
re-entry to the atmosphere, neither do I. If your book is about nuclear or
analytical chemistry, though? I KNOW THOSE NUMBERS. Send it

Custom of the Week: Coral Reef

Happy Monday, Aledan Merfolk! It’s been well over two years since I’ve featured a custom pony of the week, but if you’ve been around for a while, I’m sure you remember some of your favorites. If you’re new here, you can find all the custom ponies I’ve featured here.

When I saw today’s pony, I loved her immediately! I can’t even believe all the work that went into her, including making the tiny sea pony by hand watch the video!

Coral Reef Pony, by Ponies New Look

I love all the details on this pony! The barnacles, the cut-out coral reef with the tiny sea pony, the hair that looks like ocean waves. She’s stunning

If you have a pony that you would like featured as a Custom of the Week, please email me: rebeccaenzor@gmail.com

I’m also holding my first book signing at the West Ashley Barnes and Noble on Saturday, August 17th, from 12-4pm! If you’re planning to go to the signing and you use Facebook, please mark yourself as “interested” or “going” on the events page so I know how many books to order for the signing

Happy Book Birthday to Finn and Erie!

Last night *coughsEarlyThisMorningcoughs* I got all sentimental on the blog because SPEAK THE OCEAN is out today!

I had a post planned with all the buy links, but the printer is behind because of the holiday weekend, so…you can’t actually buy it anywhere except Kindle and Smashwords right now.

For those of you waiting on the paperback, it should be ready soon! I’ll let you know when the printer has caught up and you can buy it in paperback form

Speak the Ocean

It’s July 9th, which means it’s the launch day of my debut novel, Speak the Ocean.

It’s been a long road here. StO started as a gender-bent YA with a boy who couldn’t speak because he was always wearing a snorkel. It wasn’t a horrible idea, but it didn’t spark anything in me, either. It was a beginning, based on a really cool science story about a petrified forest of tree stumps in the Gulf of Mexico. I couldn’t make it work, so I started writing it from end to beginning, using my background in fisheries biology, and that’s when it finally sparked.

When I saw the documentary, BLACKFISH, about Orcas forced to perform for human entertainment, it had a profound effect on me. It took me three days to watch, because I kept crying so hard I had to stop it. And all I could think about was: “What if they looked more human? Would we care then?”

Probably not.

But mermaid myths throughout the ages do give a glimpse into our psyche of “different is deadly”, and real world events do give a glimpse into how far we’ll go to deny humanity to anyone we decide isn’t human.

And you can’t argue that humans value entertainment over everything.

Even I still want to swim with dolphins someday.

So, today is a long way from where I started: a boy who thought he saw a tarpon stuck in a net. That “tarpon”-mermaid showed him a petrified forest that doesn’t exist anymore, but used to millennia ago.

And then Erie showed both Finn and me how to be better humans than we were.

While ripping people’s necks out.

They deserved it.

My next post will have all the buy-links and such, but for now: Speak the Ocean. Speak the Land. Speak the Air.

Don’t be silent about what matters to you.

And absolutely, 100%, Humanize the Mer.

Memorial for a Moose-Cat

Muskellunge “Muskie” Enzor
June 5, 2007 – June 24th, 2019

To the kitten who pushed his way out of the kennel, chased after a bug, ate it, then hacked it back up. We knew you were ours.

To the kitten who hated Soca music, but who tenaciously crept closer and closer to his demon sister until she finally relented and loved you back.

[image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error]

To the cat who grew up to love everyone he met, from humans, to other cats, to dogs, to even chickens. Who loved stealing snugs, and beds, and food.

[image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error]

To Muskellunge, Muskie, Musk, Moose-cat, Moose, Musket, and all the other silly nicknames that fit you so well.

[image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error][image error]

We’re going to miss you, Brother-cat. We love you.
