As Lindsey glanced over the room once more in his search for Carlisle, his gaze halted as if compelled. He hadn’t found Carlisle—but what he did find quite drove the thought of Carlisle from his head.
In the corner by the door stood an angel.
His skin had the soft translucency of palest marble, as if he’d sprung fully formed from beneath Bernini’s chisel, or been breathed into life by the sculptor’s kiss. His dark frock coat, of some fifty or sixty year’s vintage, accentuated the bone-china shade of his flesh, as did his hair, black as rain from a thundercloud, sweeping down across his high brow as if slashed by a painter’s brush. Sharp features filled his heart-shaped face, with lips like Cupid’s bow, and cheekbones that could carve out a man’s heart. His eyes, large and dark, flitted about the room, their heavy lids granting every glance a compelling sensuality. The full eyebrows contracted into an expression of furtive concentration, alert and intelligent, such as a master of chess might wear when considering how best to eviscerate his opponent. He stood considerably shorter than all the other men in the room, with such a delicacy of features that outshone every lady present.
Then the dark eyes met Lindsey’s own, and with a shocked gasp—the first breath he’d taken since he’d spied the enchanting stranger—Lindsey realized he’d been staring.

“‘And in the throbbing engine-room leap the long rods of polished steel.’”
Aubrey’s heart stuttered in his chest. He hardly dared to flick his eyes toward the gentleman.
But the gentleman only smiled an all-too-charming bashful smile. “Forgive me—I was feeling poetical.”
Aubrey, who had never felt poetical in his life until this evening, managed a pale imitation of that smile in return.
The seclusion of the engine room served to heighten other aspects of Aubrey’s senses. He had not realized, in the midst of the party, that the gentleman had a scent. A slight masculine musk, along with the warmth of his body, standing so close to Aubrey as he did now, bypassed his brain to speak straight to his baser instincts. This warmth was rivaled only by the warmth of the gentleman’s voice and expression, which did still more curious things to Aubrey’s heart. The atrophied organ fluttered against his ribcage disconcertingly. The thought of curling around the warmth sent a hungry shudder over his skin. It’d been so long since he’d felt more human contact than a brief handshake. The mere suggestion of an embrace felt intoxicating. He had intended only to speak with the gentleman, but now that he stood so very near, and with no one else around…

Between university, foxhunting, steeplechasing, rowing, cricket, fencing, and the myriad social obligations of a prince, Lindsey had little time to even think of romantic pursuits.
Which meant that when the handsome stranger pressed him against the door, the resulting kiss was the first to ever touch Lindsey’s lips.
And it took his breath away.

The cold fog of the City hit him full in the face as he plunged onward through the darkness. The roar of music and a hundred human voices fell away. The glow of the Crystal Palace reached only a few meters into the gloom. He didn’t dare glance backward at the brilliant crush of bright young things of fashion, fluttering within the glass walls like butterflies in a conservatory. A gnat like himself had no place amongst them.
And yet, no matter how many steps he marched over the slippery cobblestones, he could not forget the touch of soft fingertips trailing through his hair. His scalp still tingled with the echoes of the sensation, its electricity not yet discharged, every now and again sending another shiver over his touch-starved skin.

“Who was that beautiful man at the party?”
Graves gave him a blank look. “You’ll have to be a little more specific. I rather stacked the deck in that regard.”
Upon reflection, Lindsey supposed all the guests had looked quite fashionable. But to his mind, there was only one truly beautiful man. “Dark hair, compelling eyes.”
“Beardsley?” Graves guessed. “Long face, slender hands, tall, artistic type?”
“What? No,” said Lindsey. “Shorter than myself—”
“Most people are,” Graves said in the tone of one who’d often lamented it.
“Shorter than you,” Lindsey added.
“That’s something, at least,” Graves sighed. “Why didn’t you ask him his name at the time? Not shy, surely.”
“No,” Lindsey said. “Its just I didn’t think of it. We stopped talking after a certain point.”
At first it seemed this allusion might pass Graves by. Then, with a spark of understanding which turned to wonder, he stared at Lindsey. “Do you perhaps mean your mouths were otherwise occupied?”
“Yes,” said Lindsey with heat rising in his cheeks. He didn’t see why Graves had to make such a point of it. Graves himself was no stranger to, well, encounters with strangers.
“How occupied?” Graves demanded with a wolfish grin.
“Enough so that I failed to catch his name,” Lindsey said firmly, hoping to dissuade any further delving for details.
Graves appeared disappointed, but glossed over it with reasonable grace. “And you wish to see him again.”
“Very much so.”
“Can you recall any more details?”
Lindsey could recall a great many, but he didn’t think they were of a sort Graves would recognize. Or maybe they were. Perhaps Graves had dallied with the beautiful man before. Lindsey felt a pang, more sympathetic than jealous. He’d heard how Graves spoke of his more casual conquests, and didn’t like the idea of him speaking of the beautiful man in the same tones. “Heart-shaped face. Cupid’s bow lips. Sharp features—cheekbones in particular. And his eyes…” Here Lindsey faltered, not for lack of memory, but overcome by it. “Large and dark, with such a gaze as would bring anyone to his knees.”
Graves’s own eyes widened. “Would it, now?”
Too late, Lindsey realized the implications of his description. “You know what I mean.”

“Apparently the prince met someone at the party and is absolutely besotted.”
Aubrey, who’d spent the last few moments trying and failing to remember which prince was called Lindsey, felt a growing unease at this. “Oh?”
“Yes. So besotted, in fact, that he failed to learn the man’s name. He’s turned to Graves for help with the matter. And Graves went down the whole guest list, searching for anyone who matches the description Prince Lindsey gave, or anyone who saw such a person at the party. Several people have claimed to, of course, but Graves has discredited their testimonies.”
Aubrey’s stomach did an uncomfortable flip. “What description did the prince give?”
“That’s the funniest part. Small, dark, large eyes, sharp features. Sound familiar?” Halloway asked with a grin.
Aubrey didn’t think it very funny at all, but forced a smile.
“Finally,” Halloway continued, “Graves got so fed up with the whole business that he came to me in desperation and asked if I’d brought anyone particularly beautiful along to the party—one of my models, perhaps? And I told him no, not any of my models, but a gentleman I wish would model for me. And, upon reflection, he almost matches the description. But I cannot for the life of me imagine him taking such liberties—though I suppose the prospect of prince is a very compelling catch.”
Aubrey’s growing dread became an internal scream.
“Anyway,” Halloway said with a dismissive wave, “that’s what I told Graves. Couldn’t possibly be my man, sorry I can’t be of more help, et cetera. But isn’t it extraordinary? The mystery man is a match for you in every aspect save behaviour.”
“What does Prince Lindsey look like?” Aubrey asked.
Halloway’s mirth died on his face.

Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold
is up on my Patre♡n! Wherein Lindsey acquires certain property and longs for his mysterious gentleman. Please enjoy this sneak peek and join me for more.
~
With an enthusiasm that bordered on breathless, Lindsey launched into a description of the mysterious gentleman he’d met that evening; the dark and haunting eyes, the features sharp and fine, the splendid rosebud colour of the bow-shaped lips, the intrigue of his conversation, of the mechanical brilliance that whirred beneath his ivory brow, and—well, Lindsey abbreviated much of what occurred towards the end of their singular encounter, though he gave enough detail for Carlisle to understand a liaison of some sort had taken place, one which Lindsey very much hoped to repeat. Carlisle’s eyebrows rose as he understood the allusion, but he made no objection, moral or otherwise. Lindsey supposed the revelation came as no surprise to him. Their constant companionship throughout their adolescence and beyond had no doubt given Carlisle much more insight into Lindsey’s character than Lindsey himself understood.
“And Graves still has not found him?” Carlisle asked, bemused, as Lindsey finished his tale.
“Not yet,” said Lindsey.
“I wish I could have attended,” said Carlisle. “I’d be more help to you if I’d seen the man myself.”
“Doubtless you had more pressing concerns,” said Lindsey, and meant it. Carlisle had inherited a great number of business investments from his late father, and had acquired several more since attaining his majority. The coal mines in particular had proved troublesome of late. Carlisle visited them often. Lindsey could hardly hold his strong work ethic against him.
“Not so pressing as to prevent me from celebrating with you,” said Carlisle, “had I been invited.”
Lindsey’s happy musings came to a sudden halt. “Not invited?”
“No,” said Carlisle. His tone remained easy, if a tad wistful. “Perhaps Lord Graves thought I wouldn’t fit in with his crowd. Or perhaps I do him an ill turn, and my invitation was merely lost in the mail.”
Lindsey, too aghast to speak, failed to reassure his friend as he knew he deserved.
“As to your mysterious engineer,” Carlisle said before Lindsey could begin to express his outrage, “even if you should fail to find him again, I would encourage you not to lose heart. I’m certain you may discover many such admirers, each more beautiful than the last. I’d be only too happy to assist you in that matter.”
Lindsey demurred. He did not think there were many men in the world quite like his engineer—though doubtless Carlisle would understand that as soon as Lindsey could introduce them to each other. First, however, he must find him.

See you on Patre♡n!

If Halloway intended to blackmail him, he had miscalculated, for Aubrey had put nothing incriminating into his reply to the prince’s invitation. Indeed, Aubrey had composed what was quite possibly the blandest note ever written by human hands. He had nothing to blush at, much less worry about.
Of course, that had never stopped him from worrying before.

Scene 10 of
Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold
is up on my Patre♡n! Wherein we have our first glimpse of Lindsey’s mother, who in this universe is alive.
~
“Well,” his mother continued after a short pause. “If he keeps a Wardian case, then he is no doubt familiar with the care and keeping of ferns—and ferns, I think, will do nicely. They thrive in the shade, and the glass protects them from the worst of the smog. Ferns in general indicate fascination and sincerity—which I do believe you feel—and in particular… Maidenhair,” she concluded with satisfaction. “Yes, maidenhair is perfect.”
“A maidenhair fern?” said Lindsey.
“It stands for discretion,” his mother elaborated with a knowing glance before returning her attention to the field.
