Two More Days (and then- hopefully - we go back to the usual agita and irritations)

Looking through back LJ entries (trying to find the exact date CatofSize joined the household) and found this gem from more than a decade ago:

"Must remember, when asking the freelancer gods to ensure a steady flow of work, must also ask for a humanly-achievable schedule for said flow."

To which I can only look at my schedule through the rest of the year, and sigh that sometimes, the gods hear your request...and say "nope."

In which this Jersey Girl is given warm writer-fuzzies....

Awwww.... just got a comment from reader Caroline Gaudy that both tickled me, and gave great satisfaction. Some of you will understand why.

“This may sound weird but I'm reading Bruce Springsteen's new book. He holds back when writing about the music biz and the players, but in writing about his craft and what makes story and storytelling, it reminds me strongly of how you tell it, how you do it. Also, the questions that drive his art and craft seem the ones you also raise and tackle throughout a lot of your stories.”

Welcome to November, please make note of the time and space change...

Starting this month, there has been a change to some of the Patreon rewards (adding, not subtracting!)

In addition to the on-going original serial fiction, the monthly rants, the "writerbrain" updates and the deleted extras, for patrons at the $9 level, there will be a new flash fiction every month, and the $25 tier has been upgraded to a new Tuckerization for every new serial.

Time-Sensitive Reminder!

This week I will be in Kirland (tonight!) and Portland (Thursday!) taking part in the Pacific Northwest Reading series with Rhiannon Held and Todd Lockwood. And if you're in the area you should totally come to see us, because a good time will be had.

In addition to reading from THE COLD EYE, I'm also going to be giving people a taste from the short story collection coming from Book View Cafe this month. This may be considered either a promise, or a threat.

I am sorry (not really) to report that....

I am sorry (not really) to report that there are no photos of me last night as the pirate queen, swashbuckling in red silks and black leather boots, dagger (sheath) at my hip and a black pearl (of course) around my neck.

Dancing to 80's music, drinking microbrews, and swinging at a black widow spider piñata filled with chocolate, booze and condoms. As one does.

Social lives are exhausting. I might want to try one again in a month or two....

Small nice things...

Aw, nice words about OUT OF TUNE #2 popped up on my screen this morning, via Horror Maiden! Although not their top story pick, my "Last Dance" also came in for mention from the PW review (how did I miss that?) saying "Other strong entries (include) Laura Anne Gilman's "First Dance," a haunting revenge tale."

I'm particularly proud of that story, because as far as I know, I'm the only one who went outside UK/USA folk traditions for my inspiration, using a Mexican corrido instead. Shake expectations up, I say. :-)

OryCon Schedule

I've been off the convention rounds for a while, between my dad dying this summer, and then a metric load of work slamming into me, but in November I'll be heading down to OryCon in Portland, November 18th-20th, and hope to see a lot of folk there!

(and if you're in the area but not coming to the convention, drop me a line anyway! There is always time for a kaffeklatsch!)

For them as will be there, here's my schedule:

Fri Nov 18 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Minor Characters: Talking about the ones who don't always get mentioned in the cover copy, but are often more fun to write...
Brenda Cooper, David Dvorkin, Laura Anne Gilman, Stoney Compton, Tina Connolly

Fri Nov 18 6:30pm - 7:00pm
Endeavour Awards Presentation: in which I am there in my role as nominee (for SILVER ON THE ROAD), and happy just to be there. :-)

Sat Nov 19 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Urban Fantasy Made Real: We're gonna make it real. Obviously, this could end badly...
Jennifer Brozek, Josh Vogt, Laura Anne Gilman, Ripley Patton

Sat Nov 19 3:00pm - 4:00pm
If You Could Talk to the Animals... :  Speaking of things that could end badly...
Judith Conly, Laura Anne Gilman, Mark Teppo, Sara Mueller, Sharon Roest

Sat Nov 19 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Magic and the Occult in Alternate History:  Or, how we'd do it if it were done just a little differently.
Diana Gill, Laura Anne Gilman, Laura Whitcomb, Sara Mueller, Stephen Couchman

Sat Nov 19 6:30pm - 7:00pm
Laura Anne Gilman: Reading

(this is a change from the previously scheduled 8pm reading! Please spread the word as it may not make it into the schedule! )

Sunday I will be heading back to Washington, so any appearances at OryCon is just your wishful hangover.

My brain is tired. And angry.

I'm supposed to be working on another historical fantasy project. But I'm feeling a more contemporary urge right now.

Brain, what are you about to drag me into?

SI Updatery!

After long delays at every possible juncture, the paper edition of THE WORK OF HUNTERS / AN INTERRUPTED CRY (Sylvan Investigations #3 and #4) is in progress!

(I just saw the final page proofs, and am waiting on the final cover proof)

And there was much rejoicing, not the least from me, because having this undone was a MAJOR stressor in the back of my skull....

So if you backed the Kickstarter at that level, we'll be chasing you down for a mailing address, soon.  For everyone else, PlusOne Press should have the order info up on their website soon.  :-)
