Off in the distance, this is happening...

So I learned this week that SILVER ON THE ROAD is the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club pick for May.  Specifically, it was Felicia Day’s pick.I am informed that my geek cred has now skyrocketed.  Which is nice, since I’m pretty sure I had no geek cred, previously.  :-D

Meanwhile, SILVER ON THE ROAD is currently $18.35 over at Amazon (32% off). I'm not sure how they settled on that percentage for a random price cut, but it's a pretty good price for a hardcover, in case you have been putting off buying it, or wanted to buy it for a deserving friend....

Ready, set... Nitpick!

Okay guys, here's your chance to get your fingers into publishing. We're about to go to press for the trade paper edition of SILVER ON THE ROAD, so it's time to catch all the typos and errors that slipped into the hardcover.

Ready, set, nitpick!

Everyone who helps out here gets thanked in the acknowledgements of THE COLD EYE.

Note: this thread will self-destruct in 5 days.

I don't know if you can but you certainly May....

It's May, and I'm still behind on things. At least I have a better grip on the things I'm behind on, and have spoken with everyone about revised deadlines?  I'm calling that as much of a win as April was going to give me.

Meanwhile, there's some bad news and some good news, and some changes coming down the road for me, and I'm nervous and excited, and there will be posts about all of that, soonish.  Or eventuallyish.  As things happen.

(is that teaser enough?)

In right-now news,  Mishell Baker is incoming tomorrow, staying with me during her SFWA Reading Series tour of the Pacific Northwet, so I probably should wash some towels and dust* the guest space...

stepping away from comfort reads/watches....

Finally got around to watching Black Snake Moan, after missing it (as usual) in the theaters.

That was... an interesting movie. Not going to say I loved it, because it's not (I think) the kind of movie you love.

But it is the kind of movie you think about, after. Quiet and on your own kind of thinking.

in lieu of content, food porn.

No-bake chocolate oreo tart.

(sadly, I suspect this would kill me.  But I look forward to hearing reports if anyone braves its chocolatey overkill goodness...)

Back

Well, not entirely back yet (I'm still in NYC) but the funeral is over, and while I could continue to sit shiva at home this weekend, I think my dad would have rolled his eyes and said "three days is more than enough, get on with it."

So this is me, getting on with it.

Back to Seattle in the morning, back to deadlines and obligations and cats and Life.

...and nobody had any fun at all.

I know I've been least in sight recently, or light in content.  There's been a reason for that.

Some of you, over the years, have heard the stories of my dad, the medical Energizer Bunny. Heart attacks? Pshaw. Parkinsons? Keep on truckin'. Gout? Okay, no more organ meats, whatever. Coronary blockage? His heart adapted. Hernia? Sew it up and move on. But at 84 my dad has finally met the roadblock even he can't get around: cancer.  Specifically, metastatic osteosarcoma.

And we discovered it purely by chance - a combination of post-hernia surgery swelling and high fever landed him in the ER, and a chain of events led to oncology getting involved. And three weeks later, here we are.  As I said to a friend, it's like treading water after a wreck, and waiting for the sharks to come.  You know there will be sharks, you just don't know if it will be a hammerhead, or a great white.

So.  If I've not responded to your email or phone call, or missed a deadline (or had to bail out on something), it's not that I don't love you.  But I'm going to have to beg your indulgence for a little while longer.

(Ironically, I'm currently editing a manuscript that opens with a cancer diagnosis.  I know an editor's supposed to pick up all sorts of knowledge, because you never know when it will be helpful, but the timing on this was a little sharp.)

Comments are closed on this.  I know y'all want to offer your sympathy, but right now I'm just going to take it as a given. :-)  If you're a close enough friend to have my personal phone number, feel free to call.

March 28, 2016

Six months later, and new happy readers still make my day...

The Blue Fairy says, of SILVER ON THE ROAD....

"...I picked up this book out of curiosity, because fantasy western is a subgenre that I enjoy, but don’t see that often. And I loved it. I have pre-ordered the sequel.

I love the setting. In this world, everything from the Mississippi to the Spanish colonies is the Territory. The Native nations co-exist with small settlements from outside, all governed by the Agreement: give no offense without cause, and the Devil protects his own. Magicians and marshals both ride the roads, and crossroads are places of power and danger....

The land itself is practically a character, it’s described in such a compelling manner. I have always loved the sea and the mountains, but this book could convince me to love the plains.

I also loved that there is a female main character and NO romance in this book! Everyone is too busy getting stuff done/running for their lives/fighting evil magic/etc. Also, Isobel deals with many aspects of being female in a matter-of-fact way that I appreciated.

There’s intriguing and worrisome foreshadowing for coming books as well, dealing with events outside the Territory and what might happen as history marches on.

In short, this hit right in my sweet spot. 5 Stars - An Awesome Book"
