SHOWING GRATITUDE
I enjoy watching the variety of birds that feed at my feeders. At times, I’ve counted nearly fifty Goldfinches clamoring for a spot or scavenging for seeds that have fallen to the ground. I’m amazed how, in a few short weeks, their bright, yellow feathers of summer are replaced by the dull, brown plumage of winter. This God-given camouflage provides them added protection to survive.
God’s care and provision are manifested in all of creation. Yet in His sermon on the mount, Jesus assured us that God loves us much more than birds.
What a wonderful reminder of God’s love and provision!
SHOWING GOD GRATITUDEEach Thanksgiving my family has the tradition of sharing thoughts on what we’re thankful for. Yet I wonder, are there more practical/beneficial ways to express our gratitude to God?
Matthew 25:40 says, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
So then, when we bless others, we are blessing God.
That thought started me brainstorming ideas of how we can show God our gratitude instead of just telling Him. Soon I’d compiled a list of ways we can express our gratitude to God by touching the lives of others.
Here’s my top 20 picks!
1) Spend some quality one-on-one time with your spouse.
2) Hug your children.
3) Send a Thinking of You card to someone on your heart.
4) Share a meal with someone who can’t or isn’t able to return the favor.
5) Pray with someone who’s hurting.
6) Offer to take a shut-in on an outing.
7) Give to a worthy charity.
8) Be someone’s hands or feet.
9) Send a care package to a missionary or military person.
10) Invite someone who has no place to go to your Thanksgiving gathering.
11) Volunteer.
12) Smile at a stranger.
13) Lend a helping hand to someone who’s struggling.
14) Visit someone in a nursing home or assisted living.
15) Be a listening ear to someone.
16) Reach out to someone who’s lost a loved one.
17) Share the gift of laughter.
18) Help someone in need.
19) Show forgiveness toward someone who has hurt you.
20) Tell someone thank you!
Do you have an idea to add to my list? I’d love to hear it!

WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR
In honor of Veteran’s Day, I thought I would veer from my normal posts and revisit the Wings of Freedom Airplane Tour I took a few years back. What an incredible experience to not only see but walk through these historical planes.
WINGS OF FREEDOM ~ B-17
WW II B-17 Bomber
The interior was every bit as fascinating as the exterior, with lots of gizmos and gadgets, and challenging-to-maneuver entries and exits.

B-17 Cockpit

B-17 rear gunner post
WINGS OF FREEDOM ~ B-24 BOMBER

B-24 Bomber
This is the only flyable B-24 in the world. It was destined for the junk heap, until a group called the Collings Foundation took it “under their wing” and restored it. A list of all those who served on this aircraft is posted on the side of the plane. It flew 130 missions without a crew member being lost or injured. Amazing!

Wing spans were an incredible 110 feet in length!

B-24 Cockpit

Lower gunner compartment
The smallest of the 10 crew members got the job of being the lower gunman due to the cramped space inside the compartment. Unfortunate for those who were claustrophobic!
WINGS OF FREEDOM ~ B-25 & P-51
B-25 Liberator
We also saw a B-25 Liberator and a P-51 Mustang. These two planes were available for rides at the meager cost of $450 per half-hour!! Needless to say, we admired them from afar. But then, it costs $4000 to keep all 4 planes in the air each hour of flight! These were the two planes my husband witnessed flying over our farm. Somehow, he missed the larger two. And I missed all four! So thankful we had the opportunity to tour them and even watch them take off for their next destination!

P-51 Mustang
While it’s sobering to recall the purpose for these incredible machines was to drop bombs on towns and people during the war, it is also exhilarating to know that these very aircrafts carried the men, and possibly women, who fought to retain our freedom in this and other nations. God bless them for their sacrifice!
I’ve been asked if I would ever write a story set during WW II. My response? You never know! If the Lord gives me a story for that time period, I’ll gladly write it. =)
**Do you know anyone who flew in planes such as these during WW II? If so, I’d love to hear their story!

SEASONS OF CHANGE
Change is hard. But, it can also be beautiful.
Recently, I conducted a poll asking which season is one’s favorite. The overwhelming winner was fall! There is just so much to love about it! The colorful leaves, the crisp, cool air, the combines harvesting in the fields, campfires, wiener roasts, apples, pumpkins, warm days and cool nights. Everything!
SEASONS OF OUR LIVES
The change in seasons is reminiscent of the various changes we go through in life as we venture from adolescence to adulthood. Within each stage, lies the opportunity to deepen our relationship with God, or deplete it. Our spring, yields new life, growth, youthfulness, and vigor, when we feel we can take on the world and accomplish anything. We have a God-given zest for life when we are young that often determines which path our lives will take.
Then there’s summer, when we face the harsh realities of life–the struggle to make ends meet–but also taste of its rich blessings. Meeting the love of our lives, starting and raising a family, making career choices, and putting down roots. Here we see either our faith thrive or shrivel as we seek to balance the cares of living.
Summer soon turns to fall, with thoughts of the empty nest and adjusting to life without children in the household, the joy of grandchildren, and saving for retirement. It’s in this stage, we begin to taste the urgency of life and living each day to the fullest for Christ.
Lastly, comes the winter of our lives, when things that once seemed oh, so important have faded, and the true treasures of life come to surface. When we let go of self-consciousness, pride, and ambition, and replace it with either joy or bitterness.
LIFE IS FLEETING
As I enter my fall season of life, I have to ask myself, what have I accomplished? And what have I yet to accomplish? Time is precious, and we must make the most of it. Life flitters by so fast. This past year as I faced a cancer diagnosis and treatment, my eyes were opened to just how fragile life is.
So often we get caught up in the bustle and forget what really matters. Whatever our aspirations in life, remember–only what’s done for Christ will last.
Whichever stage of life you’re in, I urge you to live intentionally, making the most of every opportunity for Christ.
What do you hold most dear as you journey through life?
Which stage has been the most challenging?

PERFECTLY ARRANGED INSIGHTS + GIVEAWAY
I’m thrilled to have my friend and fellow Scrivenings Press author, Liana George with us today, sharing about her debut novel, Perfectly Arranged. She offering a great Giveaway so be sure to stick around!
TRAVELING LIGHT
By Liana George
“For my yoke is easy and my burden light.” ~ Matthew 11:30
When I travel, I tend to overpack. Not because I want all the comforts of home with me while I’m away, but because I like to be prepared. Stained top? Muddy pants? Shoes that hurt my feet? I don’t have to worry about these situations because I always fill up my suitcase with more than enough and have back-ups on the ready.
But that’s not necessarily a good thing. In fact, when I do bring along more than I should, I usually have to check in my bags (which means $$), and I don’t have space for all the wonderful souvenirs I’d like to purchase at my destination.
Weighing the options, I find that traveling light is the best way to go. That’s because when we carry more than we’re supposed to, it can become a burden that’s tough to lug around (yet another negative for overpacking). And even though we know we need to pack as little as possible, we often refuse to lighten our loads.
PERFECTLY ARRANGEDThings aren’t any different for my main character Nicki Mayfield in my debut novel, Perfectly Arranged. A professional organizer by trade, Nicki teams up with her client, Katherine O’Connor, to uncover an O’Connor family secret. To learn the truth, the pair embark on an adventure to China.
When Nicki first heads out on the journey, she’s carrying a lot of baggage. She’s worried about her mom’s hoarding issues, anxious about finding a job once she’s finished in China, and concerned about Ms. O’Connor and what they might find when they arrive in the Land of Dragons and Tea Leaves. Clearly, Nicki’s suitcase is bursting at the seams, and that doesn’t include all the trinkets her mom has asked her to bring home!
With her back aching from all the weight, Nicki discovers she can no longer carry the load alone. Gleaning wisdom from an unlikely source, she eventually reaches out to God for guidance and strength. By studying the Bible and prayer-journaling her heart, Nicki finds the answers she needs not only to save herself and her client, but also to help those who can’t help themselves.
In the end, Nicki discovers the benefits of traveling light.
Jesus understood the importance of this as well. That’s why in Matthew 11 He encourages those who are tired and burdened with too much to come to Him. He’s more than equipped to handle whatever baggage you’re carrying and promises rest when you allow Him to do the heavy lifting.
Whether it’s in a fictional story or reality, traveling light is the best to journey through life (and on your next vacation). The question is, will we?

GRUDGES
I discovered this week how easily grudges can form without us even knowing it. Words and actions can be misconstrued, putting a strain on a relationship.
The first hint of the problem came when I received a barrage of negative FB messages from my friend. I was flabbergasted and a bit angered by the negative comments and wrongful assumptions. Many were in regards to incidents that had taken place several months earlier.
Though this individual is not someone I see in person frequently, we keep up with each other’s lives via email and messenger from time to time. And though our personalities are quite different and we’ve experienced a few bumps in the road, I thought we were on fairly friendly terms, Until her recent messages, I had no idea roots of anger and bitterness had soured her opinion of me.
When I heard how my words and actions had been twisted and misinterpreted, my first inclination was to either ignore the remarks or set her straight in a not so nice way. Then the Lord brought to mind the message woven into my latest novel, Beyond These War-Torn Lands–choosing to love those who wrong us. (A hard truth that we all struggle with, but if I write it, I figure I must also live it!).
Like my heroine, Caroline, who had to deal with a verbally abusive father who harbored hurtful feelings toward her, I had a choice to make. I could either respond harshly and defensively and let the situation mount, or I could seek to deflate the hard feelings by responding in a loving way.
After giving myself time to pray and consider how to respond in love, I proceeded to seek peace with the person instead of allowing the situation to escalate.
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” ~ Romans 12:18
It took a great deal of self-control to keep the situation in perspective. But, once I got over the initial shock and anger from the harsh words and accusations, I tried to understand why she might be lashing out at me. I knew she was dealing with some stress in her life and tried to console myself that may be why she’d come off so harshly. It didn’t excuse the behavior, but putting myself in her shoes helped calm my defenses.
I also realized differences in personalities and past disagreements played a part. I decided I need to look for ways to display more kindness and friendship.
EXPLAIN GENTLY
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
~ Proverbs 15:1
Negative thought patterns had blinded my friend to the truth of the matters. I responded to her messages by gently explaining my true motives and side of things and told her I was sorry she’d been hurt. I did my best to reply with a humble heart and without sounding defensive. When someone is offended, the goal is restoration, not proving we’re right.
LET IT GO
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” ~Colossians 3:13
Though our conversation ended with a sense of forgiveness and a desire to get along, I was still a bit shell-shocked over the accusations the following morning and being tempted to nurse a grudge of my own. Instantly, I felt the Lord put a check on my spirit. I needed to let the incident go and offer full forgiveness. I refused to allow the problem to rob me of joy and peace.
PRAY PRAY PRAY
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
~ James 5:16
Following our discussion, I committed to praying for this person and our relationship. Prayer and understanding are key to keeping our hearts and minds on the right path when it comes to restoring a relationship.

Pondering My Blessings
Lately, I’ve been pondering my blessings as a writer. There are so many high points—making writer friends, finding critique partners, receiving awards, and publishing dreams fulfilled. But, deep down I knew none of these things were THE BEST BLESSING.
Again, I asked myself: What is it I most treasure in being a writer?
Two months have passed since my fourth novel, Beyond These War-Torn Lands released. Though I’ve enjoyed lots of special moments over the past few weeks—a book launch, book signing, speaking engagement, etc., the more I contemplate, the more I savor this one aspect of being an author…
THE READERS!
As people throughout the community have purchased copies of my novels, I’ve been so blessed, not by the earnings or tally of book sales, but by connecting with readers one on one and experiencing their joy and excitement.
I’ve had the privilege of welcoming some into my home for a short chat as they stop to pick up their copies. Other times, I’ve delivered books to older ladies and enjoyed sitting with them on their porches for quiet conversation.
It has been such a blessing to make new friends, visit with neighbors I don’t often see, and meet with members of the community I otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to converse with.
Most special of all, is hearing that the godly truths woven within the framework of my novels have touched hearts. There is no greater reward as a Christian writer than knowing the Lord has used something I’ve written to impact someone’s life.
So, in my ponderings, I just want to say,

AS DAWN BREAKS INSIGHTS + GIVEAWAY
I’m honored to have friend and fellow inspirational author Kate Breslin with us today, sharing about her upcoming release, As Dawn Breaks!
For Such a Time by Kate Breslin
Beloved verse 4:14 in the Book of Esther (NIV), the story of Hadassah, a woman forced to hide her true identity, and though she became queen with all of the material luxuries her rank afforded, she suffered her share of trials. Knowing her own people would die, yet doubting her ability to save them without revealing her secret. A woman who asked God more than once, “Why me?” when she didn’t understand then His great plans for her.
In my upcoming novel, As Dawn Breaks, my heroine Rose Graham explores this same question, when after a seemingly random event she’s offered a chance at freedom—to escape her misery by becoming someone else. And with every guinea of good fortune that finds her, she’s convinced her daring act was God’s plan for her all along—until her trials begin, and resurrect her old fears, making her falter and threaten to expose her secret. Her confidence in God’s plan begins to flounder as she asks, “Why me?” in much the same way Hadassah did thousands of years before.
Most of us have experienced something similar. One minute we’re counting our blessings and the next our lives are a shambles, and we find ourselves questioning God’s plan. We may even ask why He let this thing happen, or sadly believe we’ve been abandoned by Him and turn away. But God never leaves us, nor is He responsible for the bad. Like Rose, He gave us the freedom to choose, and our heavenly Father watches patiently while we, His children, stumble and fall then pick ourselves up only to stumble again.
In As Dawn Breaks, Rose is quite the accomplished seamstress. She can sew perfectly onto a collar the tiniest piece of lace and one day dreams to have dress shop of her own. If we could imagine for a moment each choice we make as a single piece of thread, and throughout our days those threads becoming a wall tapestry with hundreds of thousands of choices running together to create an image of our character. At times the image might become distorted, or even ugly in our eyes, as pulled-out threads represent the wrong paths we took or decisions we made. Yet God is the master Sewer and has His patchwork of Fixes. He knows what we will do before we even consider it, and He’s always ready to turn the bad into the beautiful if we just trust Him. He’s the only One who can make us better for our suffering—wiser, more resilient, stronger, confident. And He offers Rose these gifts, for she has bigger challenges ahead and will need all of them in order to succeed.
“Lord was this Your plan for me all along?” she asks, and if Rose survives she’ll understand that with God’s help, every choice, every circumstance in her life has brought her to this place, for such a time as this.
What a great message! Can’t wait to read it, Kate!

A BIT OF REASSURANCE
Do you ever need a bit of reassurance that God’s still near? When the storms of life hit and He feels so far away, is He here?
Every year Bluebirds nest in a box outside our dining room window. With an average of two clutches a year, over the past twelve years, I estimate more than eighty baby bluebirds have hatched from our little birdhouse.
Over the years, I’ve watched and learned the cycle and ways of these beautiful birds (one of my very favorites). I’ve come to know about how long it takes the couple to choose the house, build the nest, lay their eggs, and raise their young.
I’ve also learned to distinguish their various calls and songs. One I never tire of hearing is the sweet call to their young—three sweet chirps that the parents sound from a nearby bush or electric line. The call is repeated over and over as if to reassure the baby birds their parents are nearby when the babies are unable to see them. I imagine the parents are sounding the three notes to say I’M – STILL – HERE.
Isn’t that a vivid picture of God with us? Whenever I hear that sweet call, I envision the Lord saying to me—I’m still here. When I can’t see God at work, when times are trying, and He seems far away, the Lord gently calls to me through a Scripture verse, a phone call or message from a friend, or an overwhelming sense of peace to let me know He’s still here!
GOD WILL NEVER LEAVE
Even in these trying times, God is here rooting for us and cheering us on. When hardships come and we lose sight of Him, like the baby bluebird that can not see his parents outside the nesting box, may we be ever listening for God’s reassuring call of encouragement and peace.
For God has promised, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

DOGWOOD WINTER INSIGHTS + GIVEAWAY
I’m excited to host my good friend and fellow author, Candace West on today’s blog. She shares some spiritual insights into her new release, Dogwood Winter.
by Candace West
George Curtis and Ella Steen lead busy, productive lives until trouble halts the ordinary. Two people, opposite sides of the same coin, face the upheaval differently. One treads the fire through faith while the other kicks against the pricks. Have you been there?
How do they weather the storm? How do we?
Jesus tells us, “These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Be of good cheer? Like Ella and George, we know it’s almost impossible to be of good cheer when life yanks that comfortable rug out from under us. Yet, when we slow down and prayerfully consider His words, it makes sense.
An old hymn expresses it best. “Then cheer, my brother, cheer. Our trials will soon be o’er…”
Cheer fills our heart when we look not at the near future, but at the things the Lord is preparing for us. He tells us, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9
Hold on, brothers and sisters, the overall picture is a beautiful promise, steadfast and sure.
What scripture cheers you?
EXCERPT FROM DOGWOOD WINTERDoest thou well to be angry?
Squaring his shoulders, George cut a glance at Parson Crandall to see if he’d heard, but the man’s face seemed lost in his thoughts. And then George realized the words hadn’t been spoken aloud.
They had come from within.
His memory drifted to his favorite story from childhood. Jonah and the great fish. How many times had he sat on Da’s knee, listening with rapt attention to the tale of the prophet who ran from his calling and his God? The Lord had asked Jonah that question. Was God now asking him?
God hadn’t worked things the prophet’s way, and Jonah’s anger had driven him from the presence of the Lord. After hiding below deck in a ship, he’d been forced to give an account of his actions to the sailors. They’d thrown him overboard, and he’d been swallowed first by the waves of the sea, then the fish. Terrible circumstances. In the end, God brought about good.
But not before Jonah cried out to the God he’d forsaken.
Kneading his forehead with his fingers, George squelched a laugh. Although Parson Crandall promised not to talk scripture, God had made no such promise.
He couldn’t outrun God, whether in New York City or the deep hollows of the Arkansas Ozarks.

Better Than Release Day
Today is Release Day for my Civil War novel, Beyond These War-Torn Lands. What could be better? After nearly two years of research, writing, and waiting, I thought its launch would be the highlight of my week. But, it fell into second place after an amazing, unexpected blessing yesterday.
When one of my ARC readers emailed me explaining why she had been rather silent about the book, my first thought was that she hadn’t liked it. But as I read further, I realized that wasn’t the case. Instead, she explained that the novel had resurfaced some wounds from her past, and she’d had to process and work through them. The struggles my heroine faced were all too real to her.
TOUCHED BY WORDSThough I won’t share details about what this reader went through, I was so touched by her words regarding Beyond These War-Torn Lands, I asked her if I could share them with you. Here are her words after she found peace with her emotions.
“They say the sign of a great author, is, making the reader feel something. You Cynthia Roemer, have more than done that! Reading this story, gave me the chance to see what I’ve gone through, with God’s love on my side and, a fresh look. Your messages have always been inspiring, this one, well, it was life changing.”
Life changing. I can’t tell you how soul-satisfying those words were to hear as an author. It has ever been my prayer that the Lord would touch the hearts of readers who read my novels. How thankful I am to know that this is one heart that has been touched. May the Lord touch others as well and bring healing where there is hurt.
I’ve entitled this new series the Wounded Heart Series because each book will feature at least one lead character who has a wounded heart that needs to heal. I covet your prayers as I delve into Book Two in the series. Without the Lord’s hand on it, the novel will be just words on a page. Thank you for your prayers!
BEYOND THESE WAR-TORN LANDS
BLURB:
The War brought them together ~ Would it also tear them apart?
While en route to aid Confederate soldiers injured in battle near her home, Southerner Caroline Dunbar stumbles across a wounded Union sergeant. Unable to ignore his plea for help, she tends his injuries and hides him away, only to find her attachment to him deepen with each passing day. But when her secret is discovered, Caroline incurs her father’s wrath and, in turn, unlocks a dark secret from the past which she is determined to unravel.
After being forced to flee his place of refuge, Sergeant Andrew Gallagher fears he’s seen the last of Caroline. Resolved not to let that happen, when the war ends, he seeks her out, only to discover she’s been sent away. When word reaches him that President Lincoln has been shot, Drew is assigned the task of tracking down the assassin. A chance encounter with Caroline revives his hopes, until he learns she may be involved in a plot to aid the assassin.
Beyond These War-Torn Lands has a special place in my heart, as much of it was written while undergoing treatments for cancer. I hope its message of Christ-like love over bitterness will speak to your heart as you read Drew and Caroline’s Story.
