Facing the Unknown ~ God Has a Plan
God has a plan. Though I may not understand it now. I know there is a reason for the hardship I’m facing.
When I wrote my debut novel, Under This Same Sky, I never dreamed I would walk through some of the same feelings my heroine, Becky Hollister did–feelings of doubt and loss. Questioning God. Devastating loss sent her faith spiraling. I’m determined the trial I’m facing will affirm my faith rather than shatter it.
A CANCER DIAGNOSIS
My cancer diagnosis came just two weeks after my father’s death due to the same horrible disease. How thankful I was he would never have to know the path ahead for me. Through all the plethora of tests and procedures, I gained a greater empathy for those who’ve received the same devastating news. And as I begin treatments, I realize how little control I have over what lies ahead.
A CLEAR CHOICE
There is but one clear choice. I must entrust my future to the Lord, approach this challenge with Him at my side, lean into Him instead of becoming embittered or downcast.
When troubles come, it’s tempting to blame God for our unwanted circumstances. In the face of tragedy, Becky Hollister’s faith is shaken. She doubts God’s goodness, His faithfulness to see her through the loss she faces.
A FAITH JOURNEY
Becky’s faith journey begins when she leaves her home to accompany her blinded father to St. Louis. There the Lord stirs her heart toward Him by opening her heart to His plan and blessing for her life. Her faith becomes more genuine as she witnesses God’s ability to turn tragedy into triumph. and loss into gain.
That is my prayer as I undergo this cancer journey. Already the Lord has been speaking to my heart, demonstrating His goodness and faithfulness through the kindness and generosity of His people. It’s my prayer that my love and appreciation for Him will deepen, and that this experience will enable me to share God’s love to others who need to sense His presence and peace.
Like Becky, I may never fully know why the Lord allowed this trial to come into my life, but I have the promise that He is with me and His plans are for me, not against me. No matter the outcome, I can have peace in knowing I belong to Him.
When have you faced a challenge that tested your faith?

To Dwell Among Cedars – FOR THE READER
I’m excited to have author friend Connilyn Cossette here today sharing some spiritual aspects from her Covenant House series. Plus she’s generously offered to GIVEAWAY A PRINT COPY OF TO DWELL AMONG CEDARS!
DEFINED BY ADOPTION
My entire life has been defined by adoption. Not only was I adopted at birth, but my brother was adopted from Korea and my husband and I adopted two precious children as well. So when I traveled to Israel in 2017, in the midst of brainstorming ideas for a series to write for Bethany House, it is no surprise that the storyline that burst to life while touring the Israeli countryside is full of adoption themes, both physical and spiritual.
As we made our way up from the coast toward Jerusalem our tour guide mentioned that we were likely driving along the same path that the Ark of the Covenant took during the events of 1 Samuel 4-7, when the Philistines stole the Ark, suffered plagues because of it, and then sent it back on a wagon to its rightful owners. Right there on the tour bus, the seeds of the Covenant House series—one which centers around two Philistine children who follow the Ark from enemy territory and are adopted into a Hebrew family—were planted.
BIBLICAL ADOPTION
God uses adoption themes over and over in his Word to show us his perfect grace and why those of us who are grafted into the family of Abraham though the Covenant of Jesus’s blood are known as adopted sons and daughters. So with all of those references in mind, along with my own experiences as both an adoptee and an adoptive mom, and also being the sister of an adoptee from a different culture, I set about to weave a story of two children who are grafted into a new family and all the joys and fears and doubts and pain and victory that goes along with physical adoption, and one that is a loose depiction of our spiritual adoption into the family of God as well.
Of course, as with all my stories, I never make things easy for my characters, and readers will discover that both of the Philistine children react differently to their altered circumstances, suffer different wounds, and make life choices based upon those experiences that drive their respective journeys in unexpected directions. Eliora (also known as Arisa), the heroine of To Dwell among Cedars, is deeply grateful to her adoptive family and embraces worship of Yahweh but still struggles with fear of rejection and resting in the unconditional love of her family, much like many adoptees (including myself) do. And her younger brother Lukio (also known as Natan) wrestles hard against the adoption, refusing to accept his new family’s love or even to let go of his past life.
ADOPTED INTO GOD’S FAMILY
Writing this series has been a wonderful reminder to me of not only what an enormous blessing my own adoption and that of my children were, but how I had the privilege of being adopted twice—once by my earthly parents and once by my heavenly Father. So my hope is that through this series, readers will see that although adoption is intrinsically bound together with grief and brokenness, the Lord can take broken families and broken hearts and through adoption transform them into something beautiful that illustrates God’s heart for every single person in our world—to be adopted into his family through his Son and to experience abundant life as His beloved children.
Amen, Connilyn! Love this. Thanks for sharing!

I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN TO ME
I never thought it would happen to me. Not now. Not at my age. Not after my family had already been through so much this year.
But it did.
MUCH TO BEAR
My cancer diagnosis hit us like a slap on the cheek. Just weeks after my dad passed away from cancer. And months after my husband had an unexpected bout with it. This third punch in the gut was almost too much to bear.
I could tell by the expression on the tech’s face as she completed the sonogram that it wasn’t good news. The summons to speak with the radiologist confirmed it. She didn’t mince words, instead she tried to prepare me for what lay ahead. Her final words to me were “good luck” and “think positive”. In reply, I told her I had God on my side–so much better than “luck”!
THE TRUTH I’M CLINGING TO
I’m not sure how this journey will end. As I write, I’m awaiting results, more tests, surgery, and some sort of treatment. But I do know this. God is with me and will be every step of the way. He knows the outcome, and He holds me in the palm of His hand. Nothing surprises Him. That is the truth I’m clinging to.
As the days pass and my nerves become frayed and thin, I will pray. I’m gathering prayer warriors to fight this attack of Satan to discourage and impair me. Live or die. I belong to the Lord.
Do I want to die? No. Not anytime soon anyway. My oldest son is planning his wedding and my youngest has yet to meet the love of his life. I long to embrace their future, live to see my grandchildren, but God has a plan. He is in control. He knows what’s best. It’s my duty to trust and bring glory to Him in how I live and respond to this trial.
If you’re facing something hard today, I’d love to pray for you. And if you’d be willing to knock on Heaven’s door on my behalf, I’d be most grateful as well.

Let’s Not Stumble in our Faith ~ FOR THE HEART
My friend Laurie Driesen shares a wonderful post about not stumbling in our faith when times are tough. Thank you, Laurie! I was blessed by it. I hope you will be too!
Does your faith waver when you don’t understand what God is doing? Instead of walking on a smooth, solid path of faith, do you start tripping and stumbling over what you thought to be true?
Stumbling on a path causes us to fall. Stumbling in our faith can cause us to fall away from the Lord. But why would a Christian allow that to happen? Very simply, when God doesn’t meet our expectations or answer our prayers the way we had hoped, we can begin to stumble over our lack of understanding.
John the Baptist had a brief stumble
John the Baptist was called by God to preach and prepare the way for Jesus. He had a solid faith and understanding that Jesus was the Messiah. He even baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Then John was thrown into prison and while there, he heard about all of the miracles that Jesus was doing, including raising people from the dead. He may have formed expectations of the type of Messiah Jesus would be. Would Jesus overthrow the Roman government? Jesus was doing miracles, why wasn’t He coming to John’s rescue?
So John sent messengers to ask Jesus if He was the promised Messiah or should they expect someone else? (Matthew 11:3) John began to question whether Jesus was really who he thought He was. Jesus instructed the messengers to return to John and tell him about the miracles they had seen. In Matthew 11:6 Jesus told them to tell John, “Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of Me.” Jesus was essentially saying that John should not allow what Jesus says or does to be the reason for his faith to waver.
Stand firm
Jesus encouraged John the Baptist by reminding him he was God’s chosen messenger that would prepare the way for the Messiah. Jesus even went as far as to say that because of John’s role he was more than a prophet and therefore he was the greatest of prophets. John’s disciples went back to John and relayed those words to him. We don’t know why Jesus didn’t rescue John from prison but we do know that Jesus told John to stand firm and not to stumble over his doubt and misunderstanding of what Jesus was doing.
Jesus’s answer to John the Baptist is the same message to us today. He tells us to stand firm when we don’t understand for example, why He heals one person and not another. Or why He doesn’t answer our prayers in the way we expect. In spite of our unanswered questions, we need to trust in the truth of God’s Word, pray and cling to God. Our human understanding is so limited and God’s plan is so much greater than what we can comprehend. We should not allow our limited understanding to cause us to doubt and falter in our faith.
We are truly blessed if we choose to trust the Lord and do not stumble on account of what Jesus chooses to do.

TRANQUILITY POINT ~ FOR THE READER
I’m happy to have writer friend, Pam Meyers sharing an excerpt and thoughts on her new release, Tranquility Point, Book 3 in her historical romance series set in her hometown of Lake Geneva Wisconsin. Plus! She’s offering a Kindle copy of any one book in the series, so stick around!
The excerpt finds Hannah Murphy at her parents’ home, having just read a letter from her fiancé who is in Great Britain. He’s told her he’s now a certified pilot and is about to start flying bombing raids over Brussels. The letter was written three weeks earlier, and she realizes he’s been flying these sorties for a while already.
TRANQUILITY POINT EXCERPT
by Pamela Meyers
A knock came at the door. “Hannah, are you okay?”
“Yes. Mama, come in.”
Her mother stepped into the room, a concerned expression on her face. “I heard you crying clear into the hall. Did Ted have bad news?”
She sat up. “I don’t know if it’s good or bad. He can’t tell me much but, I read between the lines. It appears he’s now certified to fly and is flying what he calls sorties over the enemy. He insists flying a plane is safer than being on the ground. I’m not sure I agree.” She sniffed and blew her nose into her handkerchief. “Guns can shoot down a plane.”
Her mother sat next to her and pulled her into a hug. “I was reading Psalm Ninety-One this morning, and I think it’s a good psalm to read every morning while this war is going on.” She reached over to the nightstand and picked up the Bible, keeping her other arm around Hannah.
Hannah pressed her face into her mother’s shoulder as the sound of the Bible’s thin pages being turned filled the air.
“Here it is. Listen.” Mama’s soft voice rose and fell as she read the soothing words aloud.
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.”
Hannah leaned back and looked into her mother’s green eyes. “How do I know I’m dwelling in God’s secret place?”
“Do you live by the commitment you made to Him when you were in grammar school?”
“Yes. Most of the time.”
A soft smile lifted the corners of her mother’s lips. “None of us are perfect. That’s why we need Him every day of our lives. I fully believe He has Ted in the palm of His hand, as he likes to say, and you as well. If it’s His will for Ted to return home and you two to have a life together, it will happen.”
Hannah blinked her tears away. “Why do you always have the right words to say?”
A FAVORITE SCRIPTURE
This scripture is a favorite of mine. I used the King James translation in the book because back then that was the only translation people had available to them. Nowadays, we have so many. And the scripture quoted in the face pages of the novel are from the English Standard Version.
Personally, these words have assured me many times such as when I’m about to have a medical test or am concerned about a loved one who is ill. As I write this, our nation is about to vote in a presidential election and the country is very divided over the issues. It can be a stressful time and these words assure me that no matter what happens God is in control as he always has been and he is always with me.
**Who or what do you turn to in times of concern and worry?
Pam has written most of her life, beginning with her first diary at age eight. Her novels, set in and around her hometown of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, include Surprised by Love in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; Safe Refuge, Shelter Bay, and Tranquility Point, Books One, Two, and Three in the Newport of the West Series.
Pam resides in northern Illinois with her two rescue cats. She’s an hour or so away from Lake Geneva where she can be found researching and nosing for new story ideas.

EVERY DETAIL OF OUR LIVES
Without a doubt, the Lord knows and cares about every detail of our lives. This was evidenced to me in a very special way over the past few months as my dad’s health declined after a four year battle with cancer.
My third novel, Under Moonlit Skies, released last September. My dad’s eyesight had deteriorated to the point he was unable to read. Since he’d enjoyed the other two books I’d written, I offered to read Stew and Esther’s story to him.
A SPECIAL TIME
At first, he declined, fearing it would take too much of my time. But, this spring, he asked if I would read it to him. So, each week, over the summer, I went and read a couple of chapters outside on the patio or in the swing. He would ask questions and tell me “thank you” over and over. The time became so precious to us both.
By July, we’d just reached the halfway point when he took a fall that landed him in first the hospital, then rehab. We also learned his cancer was becoming unresponsive to the chemo meds, so I feared his time was short-lived.
I prayed the Lord would allow him more time and that, if it be His will, we would be able to finish the novel. It became important to me to see the cherished novel reading time to completion. The Lord answered my prayer and my dad rallied for more than two months.
GOD’S TIMING
Eventually, as the cancer progressed, it became increasingly difficult to read together. He would fall asleep at times, and I had to jog his memory on the names and whereabouts of characters in between sessions. But we continued to look forward to that special time together, sharing the adventures I had penned.
We finally reached “The End” on October 9. He clapped when I finished, sending a wave of joy and satisfaction through me. What an honor and privilege it was to share that special time with him, making a memory I will never forget. The Lord had answered my prayer…just in the nick of time.
Days later, he worsened to the point we started in-home hospice. One week after we finished the novel, he went to be with Jesus. What a precious gift the Lord gave me in allowing us to share that time together to completion!
The Lord does see and care about every detail of our lives. No one can convince me otherwise. What may seem small in the world’s eyes, speaks volumes to those of us who know and trust in the goodness of the Lord.

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY ~ FOR THE HEART
One thing I’ve noticed is that the Lord’s plans for our lives often differ from our own. We start off in one direction only to have the door slam shut and another entirely different path open up. The Lord truly does move in mysterious ways.
AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
Often He takes us down roads we never would have chosen or anticipated for ourselves. Events happen in our lives that totally reshape who we are and how we view life. Tragedy, loss, unexpected changes, new opportunities. God uses the events of our lives to mold us and draw us into a deeper relationship with Him.
In my debut historical romance novel, Under This Same Sky, my main character, Becky Hollister, discovers this when tragedy strikes her family, turning her world upside down. Her anguish causes her to question God’s power and authority and to ask why He allows bad things to happen. Yet the Lord doesn’t leave her there. Instead, He leads her on an unexpected journey that garners rekindled faith and renewed hope.
The novel’s key verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.” Under This Same Sky allows readers to walk alongside Becky as she journeys from the depth of anger and bitterness to acceptance and understanding.
THE LORD WALKS BESIDE US
Though we may never fully comprehend why God allows pain and difficulties to infiltrate our lives, we can know for certain He loves us and is able to work all things for our good when we submit to His will. No matter what we go through in life, we have the comfort in knowing the Lord walks beside us.

FORDING RIVERS ~ FOR THE HISTORY BUFF
One hardly gives a thought to fording rivers nowadays. We hop in our vehicles and cross on steel bridges to get where we want to travel. But once upon a time, scaling rivers was not so simple.
FORDING RIVERS BY WAGON
In my debut novel, Under This Same Sky, Joseph and Becky Hollister had to cross not one, but two rivers to arrive at St. Louis, Missouri. The first river they encounter, the Kickapoo, was a fairly narrow, shallow body of water, allowing them to ford it by wagon. Not without their challenges, however.
Halfway across the waist-deep river, the wagon snags on a rock and bogs in the mud. Becky must take the reins as hero, Matthew Brody, uses leverage to pry the wheel free. I had such fun writing this scene, in this tale of God’s provision and grace.
But the difficult journey was far from over. The Mighty Mississippi stood between them and their destination
FORDING RIVERS BY FERRY
With no bridge available, they had only a flatboat ferry as a means to ford the wide river. Wagon wheels were removed or secured by heavy, wooden blocks to keep them from rolling. In the 1850’s when the novel takes place, the ferry would have been powered by a small steam engine. Also, to help guide the vessel, men with sturdy poles would have been stationed on both sides of the flat-boat.
In dry years, ferries faced getting snagged in sandbars. While in wet years, the ferry workers struggled against raging river water or brought a halt to the flat-boat ferries until the river receded.
CHALLENGES OF THE PAST
Fording rivers was only one challenge my characters faced. Times were hard in the nineteenth century. We have so many blessings and conveniences that are taken for granted nowadays. Researching the past provides us a window into the past that helps us recognize how blessed we truly are.
~ Name a modern-day convenience you are thankful for that isn’t always considered a blessing. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

PASSING THE TORCH ~ FOR THE HEART
In the Olympic games, “passing the torch” refers to runners carrying and relaying a lit torch to others. The runners pass the torch until the official Olympic torch is lit. When Christians “pass the torch”, it refers to passing our faith along to our children and those who come after.
One of the saddest verses in Scripture is found in Judges 2. Joshua had died and no qualified leader had stepped up to take his place. When his generation passed on, a new generation was born, one that forgot what the Lord had done for them.
After all the Lord did to deliver His people and bring them into the promised land, how His heart must have broken to watch them turn away. What caused this new generation to forget their faith in God?
PASSING ON THE FAITH
All it took for God’s people to fall away was for one generation to miss passing on their faith. Like the Olympic torch, if one person allows the torch to go out, the flame is extinguished. The same is true with our faith. If we neglect to teach our children and those the Lord places in our path, the next generation will suffer the fate. We as Christians must be diligent in sharing our faith and living it out on a daily basis.
My dad just arrived home from a five day stay in the hospital, his second in less than three months. He is losing his battle with bone cancer and in-home hospice is not far away. Though my heart breaks at the thought of losing him, I am so proud of the life he has lived.
While at the hospital, the doctor gave him the news that there is nothing more to be done for him. Yet, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he boldly stated “I’m not afraid to die. I’m a Christian.” Instead of bemoaning the news, he made myself and the nurses laugh with humorous stories from his past. Rather than showing fear in the face of death, his thoughts turned to concern for my mom and the family in his absence.
FAITH THAT FLOURISHES
My sisters and I are all Christians with Christian husbands and children who love the Lord. How blessed we are to have parents that refused to drop the torch. Instead, they were diligent to teach and admonish us in the Lord, and we in turn are passing the torch of faith to our children and grandchildren
If the generations to come are to flourish rather than flounder, we must pass our faith onto them, be in prayer for them, and demonstrate what enduring faith truly is.
My father’s 91 years have been a testimony of his love for the Lord. He has been faithful to the end. May we all share that trait! May we write the Lord’s teachings on the tablet of our hearts for all to see.
Who is someone that has encouraged you in your faith?

Looking for Hope ~ FOR THE READER
This week I’m thrilled to have good friend and fellow historical author Misty M Beller sharing a message of hope from her novels. Plus, she’s giving away a copy of Book 1 in her new series, so stick around to the end for a chance to win!
Looking for the Hope by Misty M. Beller
One of my favorite themes to write about is God’s love, and the way He guides us in His plan if we’re intentional about seeking His will in each decision. We all want to know we’re in God’s will, right? That He will bless the outcome of whatever we’re setting out to accomplish. But I’ve always tended to think that being in God’s will would make things easier. Make the road a bit smoother. So when life would become exceedingly tough, I would sometimes question how I had stepped outside of God’s will. Where did I go wrong?
Book two in my series with Bethany House, Love’s Mountain Quest, is the story of a mother’s journey to saver her 5-year-old son who’s been kidnapped by a gang of thieves. Can you imagine how that must feel as a mother? The terror of not knowing what your child might be facing. The horror of the situation being so far out of your control.
She enlists the help of Isaac Bowen, a mountain man who’s helped her once before. Together they set of to recover her son and the friend who was stolen with him. I love Joanna’s tenacity to take action in the face of fear. Ever heard the phrase, “Cowgirl up?” This woman knew what that meant!
JOY IN HARD TIMES
One of the things God showed me at a heart-deep level as I wrote this story was how critical the hard times are to reaching joy. Not just important to properly appreciate the blessings God brings to us, but we can’t actually reach the good until we’ve traveled through the rough parts. Our lives are a journey, and no matter how dark the current path may feel, I can cling to the fact that my Father will bring me joy and blessings, as long as I stay on the path He’s placed me. As long as I seek His face and yearn to model His righteousness, I can look forward to the gifts He plants along the journey.
That, my friend, brings me hope!
Misty M. Beller is a USA Today bestselling author of romantic mountain stories, set on the 1800s frontier and woven with the truth of God’s love. She was raised on a farm in South Carolina, so her Southern roots run deep. Growing up, her family was close, and they continue to keep that priority today. Her husband and children now add another dimension to her life, keeping her both grounded and crazy. God has placed a desire in Misty’s heart to combine her love for Christian fiction and the simpler ranch life, writing historical novels that display God’s abundant love through the twists and turns in the lives of her characters.
