Natural stress relief: bring the dock on home
“What’s the point of meditating anyway? I feel like I know my own mind and how to quiet it. I know how to do my own stress relief.”
I was on a week’s meditation retreat recently and guiding a friend in her practice. She’s an active woman. She loves to hike and kayak, and is equally comfortable with her own company or with friends and colleagues. But she wanted to know what was the end goal of meditation? How would she know if she was getting there?
Stress Relief on the Dock
She then describe...

Build Resilience. Use Your News Feeds – Don’t Be Used By Them
Stay engaged or unplug? How do you maintain resilience when 24/7 newsfeeds have you feeling off-balance or overwhelmed?
I was talking with a friend today. Like so many, she’s feeling blue. Staying on top of the news doesn’t help. Whether it’s Trump, Brexit, Keystone, Women’s March, Syria, snowstorms in California’s Sierra or alternative facts, it can feel too much. Hunkering down is tempting. Especially in January, when some of us haven’t seen the sun for weeks!

Sync Up Your Self-Awareness and Other Awareness for Leap Day
Every four years on Leap Day, we are reminded to re-sync our human made clock time to nature’s solar time. I don’t know about you, but this reminds me how I am always a little slow to catch on to what’s really going on. My self-awareness and other awareness are not as in sync with reality as I’d like to think.
Constructs like calendars are wonderful things. Our western calendar was implemented over 2000 years ago by Julius Caesar, helping the Romans provide consistency across their far flung...

Finding Time for What’s Important
From 5:30 – 800 PM she doesn’t take calls. Catherine McKenna – Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change – builds family and personal resilience by creating boundaries that protect her family life from her big job. As reported, for several hours each evening she is home with her husband and children, having dinner and supervising homework. At 8 PM it’s back to work.
We all struggle with too much to do, not enough time to do it. I was reminded of this when talking with a friend abou...

The Perils of Spiritual Leadership
The challenges of spiritual leadership have recently been highlighted in a New York Times article for an individual linked with the integral community.
Is this a problem unique to the integral community, to spiritual teachers or to leaders in general? Personally, I think the question is complex, important and too often swept under the rug. Without wishing to comment on any one individual, I believe that spiritual leaders bear a special responsibility to support others’ development with skil...

Meditation in real life takes some balancing An integral approach to supporting your meditation practice can set you up for sustainable success, turning your good intentions into a positive habit for life!
Many people are inspired to start meditating by the recent FAST Company article. And yes, it can be challenging. There’s also a lot of hype or misconceptions to overcome – like the idea that the inner chatter in your mind will quickly go quiet. Or that it’s even supposed to go quiet. NOT!

Impeccable Commitments in Uncertain Times
How do you make a commitment that has staying power when you know that your promises are subject to the risks of change and uncertainties?
We all respond differently when faced with many requests for our time and actions. One of my clients strives for perfection, so he may put things off, which leaves him with lots of items pending, niggling away at his energy. Another will try her best to accommodate, but feel overwhelmed and unacknowledged for her efforts. My own response too often is to...
