An unimaginable trauma. A future that seems impossible. When your world shatters, how do you put it back together?
For 950 days, Kathleen Conners has struggled with that choice. Behind a scarf and sunglasses, she hides from the world, from herself, from The Event, from any future with anyone.
After receiving a box of letters from his deceased mother, Matt Nelson is shoved from his predictable, controlled life to a secluded beach in North Carolina. While trying to understand his mother’s intent, he discovers Kathleen. Matt must choose whether to follow the path his mother orchestrated or rescue the woman who has captured his heart.
When the only person Kathleen blames more than herself reappears, can Matt be the strength Kathleen needs to create a new life, or will he be forced to walk away if she decides the climb is too great?
GUEST POST:
WHERE DO STORIES COME FROM?
My second book, Journey to Hope, recently hit the market. I’ve had many people ask me, “Where did you get the idea?” and “Is any of it true?”
Where?
Book one, Decide to Hope, came to me in a strange way. I had just returned home from a nine-week stint in a rehab facility after having a nervous breakdown. I had lost my career, most of my friends and all of my faith. What I had was my physical body. So I started to take care of it.
I began by hiking up Stone Mountain in metro Atlanta twice a day. I always – always -- had music in my ears. On one of these hikes, a man started talking to me. He wasn’t flesh and bone, but he was REAL. He kept saying, ‘You need to tell my story. Her story.’
Seriously, I had just left a mental health facility. Can you imagine my fear when I heard voices?!
I swatted him away and kept walking.
He returned day after day with the same plea. Finally, on a Friday afternoon, I took a shower, grabbed a pen and paper, settled on my deck, and began to listen. By the time Dave was home for dinner, I’d written over 200 pages (handwritten). None of it was particularly good or even legible. But the spark had turned into a flame and off I went.
Four long years later, Decide to Hope was published and Matt got to tell his story.
Before I even wrote “The End” of Decide to Hope, I began to realize Kathleen’s story was woefully incomplete. I’d shoved her into a horrible situation, and I needed to – had to – help her find a way out. Journey to Hope is her story.
Real?
My daughter read both books and helped me with marketing. She called me one day and asked, “Is Missy real? Pia? Was that place like the one you went to?”
· Missy is based on a real person. Of course, book Missy is slightly more diabolical than the real person.
· With Pia, I only changed her name and her age. Her story is 100% real.
· The Center is based loosely on the rehab center I lived in.
· Lisa is a composite of the many therapist I’ve had along the way.
· The nephew is not real. He is, sadly, ripped from the headlines.
· I personally experienced the exquisite pain and healing from drama therapy. The book elevates the drama and makes it all happen too quickly. But, hey, it’s fiction.
Does Rehab Look Like This?
I had a critique partner say to me, “This is not what therapy looks like in places like this.”
I remember the day clearly. I swallowed back my sarcastic retort, put my pen down and said, “I didn’t know you’d been to rehab. Would you like to share your story?”
I know, I know, that was kinda of bitchy and wholly passive aggressive.
Fiction is just that – fiction. But other than speeding up Kathleen’s journey, I based every therapy session, every group session, every character, on what I saw and experienced. I am not a therapist. I do not run a mental health facility. I am a journeyman on the road to creating an authentic life.
Am I Kathleen?
No. I am not Kathleen. I am, however, a woman who has suffered through trauma and had to find a way through to the other side. Kathleen’s story dovetails mine in the following ways:
· Crisis of faith
· Abandonment of relationships
· Loss of peace
· Loss of purpose/career
But, dear reader, there are real Kathleen’s out there and I ask you not to critique their journey. We have no idea the depth of someone else’s pain or the unique difficulty treatment presents to each individual.
Matt stood beside Kathleen. Give that to someone else.

Blog Tour: MRS. P, WHO STOLE MY KEYS? by Lacie Carpenter and Thornton Cline
Mrs. P Series, Book 2
Middle-Grade Book
Published Date: January 29, 2021
Publisher: INtense Publications LLC
Mrs. P. and her students return to school from their holiday break only to find more pranksters on the loose in her classroom. Mrs. P. is pranked with a hologram of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Ghost of Avery Middle School and with the mother of them all--her keys mysteriously disappear for weeks. Ella, Lennox, Stella and Austin team up to investigate and uncover the identity of the secret prankster who is constantly disrupting Mrs. P.’s class.
Short excerpts
“Class, watch carefully because the next eruption will be spectacular. This volcano model will demonstrate the Phreatomagmatic eruption, which produces lava and is very explosive,” Mrs. P. warned. “I ask you to please stay in your seats during this experiment.”
Memories of Mrs. P.’s hair on fire from a chemistry experiment gone wrong flashed through her mind. Mrs. P. moved toward the third model and took a slow, deep breath as she lit the fuse at the base. She closed her eyes for a second, waiting for the large, tall volcano model with a wide mouth to explode.
“It’s getting ready to erupt. These volcanoes erupt due to water and magma interacting,” Mrs. P. warned.
All of the student's eyes were glued to the volcano. The room became quiet, still before the storm. Without any warning, the volcano exploded with a loud, thunderous noise, which could be heard from three classrooms down. Something shiny and metallic flew out of the mouth. Massive amounts of lava spewed and spilled all over the place.
“What a sham,” Stella whispered to Lennox, Austin, and Emma.
“You’re telling me,” Lennox replied.
“Are we the only ones who know the truth?” Emma whispered.
“Preston, Tristan, and Mason know, but I guess the other classmates think he hung the moon,” Austin said.
“And now’s not the time to tell them,” Stella whispered back.

Blog Tour: JOYOUS LIES by Margaret Ann Spence
Women’s Fiction
Date Published: February 15, 2021
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Maelle Woolley, a shy botanist, prefers plants to people. They don't suddenly disappear. Raised on her grandparents' commune after her mother's mysterious death, she follows the commune's utopian beliefs of love for all. Then she falls for attractive psychiatrist Zachary Kane. When Zachary claims her mother and his father never emerged alive from his father's medical research lab, Maelle investigates. What she discovers will challenge everything she believes, force her to find strength she never knew she had, and confront the commune's secrets and lies. What happened to love? And can it survive?
Excerpt 1:
The plants, she hoped, would have something to say.
With the door to the laboratory closed and the sound barriers in place, Maelle fixed acoustic sensors onto two potted plants, situated side by side in a glass dome so even the vibrations of her breath could not disturb them. Above one, she played a recording of the sound of a caterpillar munching leaves. The noise, when magnified so humans could hear it, sounded like the march of eager feet over rough terrain. After twenty minutes, she removed the recording, put on her earphones, and waited.
She heard it, a faint clicking sound.
The plants were talking to one another.

Win is renovating Crewse Creamery to restore its former glory, and filling the menu with delicious, homemade ice cream flavors—many from her grandmother’s original recipes. But unexpected construction delays mean she misses the summer season, and the shop has a literal cold opening: the day she opens her doors an early first snow descends on the village and keeps the customers away.
To make matters worse, that evening, Win finds a body in the snow, and it turns out the dead man was a grifter with an old feud with the Crewse family. Soon, Win’s father is implicated in his death. It's not easy to juggle a new-to-her business while solving a crime, but Win is determined to do it. With the help of her quirky best friends and her tight-knit family, she'll catch the ice cold killer before she has a meltdown...
Excerpt 1
“Yes,” I said. “Let’s make ice cream!” I clapped my hands together. “Maisie, you’re on flavor duty. I’m making the usual—French Vanilla, chocolate, only mine is going to be chocolaty decadence.”
“Decadent chocolate? I don’t know how you’d do that.” Riya said, “But that sounds like it’s going to be my favorite.”
“I’m betting it’ll be everyone’s favorite,” I said.
“What about strawberry?” Maisie said. “That’s a usual one.”
“I’m doing it, only I’m mixing it up and making it a shortcake.” I turned and pointed to my mother. “Mom, I need you to bake the cake and,” I nodded toward the pantry, “I had ears of corn delivered this morning. They’re in a box. I pulled them in there, too. If you can cut the kernels off the cobb for me.”
“Popcorn?” she asked her eyebrows arching. “You’re making popcorn ice cream?” She didn’t seem to like the idea.
“We’re not doing popcorn, per se,” I said with a sly grin. “At least not what you’re thinking of. I’m making a caramel corn ice cream.”
“Oh! That sounds yummy,” she said and smacked her lips.
“Glad you like it,” I said and smiled. “So you take care of the corn and I’ll make the caramel.”
“So what do you want me to do?” Maisie asked.
“Split the vanilla bean and extract the seeds,” I said. “And I’ll need enough to make vanilla extract, too. I’ll give you the measurements. Then cut up the strawberries. I’ll make the puree.” I grabbed my knapsack and pulled out my notebook. “Oh,” I said after perusing it, “I’m also making cherry amaretto chocolate chunk.”
“Amaretto?” Maisie said. “As in the liqueur?”
“Yes,” I said. I looked at her sideways and batted my eyes. “As in the liqueur. So, I’ll need you to pit and half the cherries and break the chocolate into chunks.” I tore the page out of my notebook. “I wrote down how much I’ll need.” I pointed to the pantry where I’d told my mother she’d find the corn. “Everything’s in there.”
“And me?” Riya asked.
I walked over to the commercial refrigerator and pulled out a crate of eggs. “Here,” I said and nodded toward the aluminum mixing bowls, “Grab a couple of those. I need you to separate these eggs for me.”
“Oh.” She looked down at them, then back up at me. “I-I don’t know if I can do that,” she said, taking the tray from me, her eyebrows knitted together. “I don’t think I remember a thing from my surgery rotation.”
“It’s not like surgery,” my mother said laughing. “It’s easy. You’ll be fine.” My mother headed to the pantry to get started on her assignment. “Crack open the shell and extract the yolk.”
“Sounds like surgery to me,” Riya muttered. Maisie and I chuckled.

Tiffany Caldwell: I have worked with children for over thirteen years and every year basic manners become less evident. When I was growing up, my sisters and I took etiquette classes during the summer while we visited our grandparents. Etiquette was always a big part of our upbringing. When we would have our family dinners, my dad, W.R. MacKenzie, would make our utensils come to life as we were eating. Forkman became a part of our dinner routine! I am a mother of three great kids and military wife to my hero. A few years ago, I told my dad we needed to start writing our story. We are so excited to share Forkman with the world!
W.R. MacKenzie: I spent thirty-nine years in the bakery business. After I retired and my four children were grown, I felt it was time to share the importance of the family meal with the world. The Adventures of Forkman teaches children how to properly conduct themselves at the table. Our books are filled with characters all children can relate with and I believe Forkman and his crew will help children of all ages learn manners and table etiquette.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: W.R. MacKenzie and Tiffany Caldwell
1. How did you do research for your book? Research for the book comes from basic table manners handed down to me through the teachings of my Mother and Grandmother. I paid this forward at the family dinner table after my children were born; additionally, my daughters attended Etiquette classes when they were young.
2. Which was the hardest character to write? Hardest and yet easiest, Forkman. Easy to make him the central character…but to create and introduce a talking Fork with a cape, would take a bit of imagination and silliness with just enough convincing to intrigue young readers.
3. In your book you make a reference to Forkman, how did you come up with this idea? My explanation of how my Dad taught me… back when I was a young man, teaching wasn’t always so delicate! If I made the mistake of eating with my elbows on the table-a manner I had certainly been taught, my Dad would nicely bump my elbow with the butt end of a table knife to get them off the table. Forkman came alive when I realized the I could not tap my daughters elbows with an instrument to teach them, so I would say in an animated voice, “Forkman says get your Elbows off the table” and so on.
4. What made you write a book about…? In 2010 my daughter Tiffany came to me, as her family was beginning and suggested we should write a book about Forkman. Truly never thought about writing a book about Forkman until that moment. Parents teach all the time; these silly lessons made an impression and I truly loved the idea of us creating this series together-Father and Daughter!
5. Where do you get inspiration for your stories? Everyday life at the family table; watching other families at restaurants…who have children struggling with the basics; visiting family and friends and seeing who is cleaning up and how, do they involve the children or are they just catered to and never really learn. Keep your eyes open and you see the need for these lessons everywhere.
6. There are many books out there about….What makes yours different? There are many books on Etiquette, but there are none with a superhero Fork!
7.. What advice would you give budding writers? Don’t let anyone tell you, that you can’t do it! Journaling at a young age…take notes, lists, jot ideas and new words down-one day you will find yourself with the beginnings of something great!

Mer Harbor is a small, coastal town in Southern California. Everyone knows everyone, and nothing is a secret among Mer Harbor residents. Some hope to escape someday, while others find the charm of the town enticing, and never leave.Everley Romero and Heath Mitchell had always planned to take on the world together. To leave Mer Harbor and pursue their dreams. It all seems to crumble when a tragic loss sends them in different directions. Almost ten years later, Everley finds herself on the receiving end of a bitter divorce, leaving her no choice to return to the home - and past - she'd hoped to leave behind for good. Heath is building a good life for himself in Mer Harbor. When he crosses paths with Everley, he learns that they'll both have to face a past full of heartbreak and loss that they've both tried to bury.
Read the Excerpt
“Hey sweetheart.” Heath sat down on the grass by the headstone that marked where his little girl was buried. “I brought you a daisy.” He pulled the little white flower from his coat pocket and laid it next to the stone.
She couldn't answer, and the grave was nothing more than a memorial, but visiting and talking as if she were listening made him feel better. “I know your birthday's not for another two weeks,” he continued, “but I've had a rough few days.” He choked up, “It's been nearly eight years, yet I still feel as if we lost you just yesterday. Your mother's come back into town, and that's probably part of the reason it hurts so much more right now.”
“Sorry,” someone whispered softly. Heath looked up and saw Everley walking towards him, stopping a short distance away. “I didn't know you were here... I can come back later. ”
“Nonsense,” he said quietly, “there's plenty of room here.”
Everley hesitated, then started shaking. “I haven't been here since the funeral. It was always too painful-” whatever else she was going to say was lost in mumbles as she started crying.
Heath stood and crossed the distance she'd left between them. He expected her to pull away when he wrapped his arms around her, but she stayed, burying her face in his chest as he tried to calm her. She continued talking, but it was hard to understand her muffled words. It sounded like apologies, but he couldn't quite make out for what. “Shhhh,” he soothed, “it's all right... I've got you.” He felt her arms wrap around his waist, and he squeezed her tighter, letting her know he wasn't going anywhere.

Tom Woof and Max The Owl is the tale of a young puppy who loves to write, who comes to live on a farm full of animals who don’t get along. Tom wants to share his stories, but he ends up writing them wherever he happens to be when he thinks of them, and this makes him very unpopular with the animals who don’t understand him. Fortunately, the wise owl who lives on the farm Max The Owl does understand, and he teaches Tom not only how to write his ideas down in a way that can be enjoyed, but he also shows him how to bring the animals together through their shared love of stories.

Being an avid reader, the consummate daydreamer, and an incurable romantic with a Cinderella complex, she started creating her characters and storylines because she realized she had her own stories to tell. She's traveled the world, crossed galaxies, traveled through time, and explored history on the pages of books.Besides reading and writing, she also enjoys photography, travel, music, great movies, and Elvis.
