R.I.P. Bill Bartell, aka Punk Legend Pat Fear of White Flag

Pat Fear of White Flag passed away. He was a contributor to We Got Power!: Hardcore Punk Scenes from 1980s Southern California, by David Markey and Jordan Schwartz, and was an unshakeable fixture on that scene since long before it existed. He was also a longtime collaborator of our author Tesco Vee. Our condolences go out first and foremost to Dave, Jordan, and Tesco, friends who have lost a very old friend.

Today Is the 31st Anniversary of Metallica’s First Show in the Bay Area

The mighty “Cirith Umgoo” couldn’t make it to San Francisco, and were replaced by another Metal Blade discovery from the first Metal Massacre comp., Metallica.


Today is the 31st anniversary of Metallica’s first show in San Francisco. They came, they conquered a small but hugely appreciative crowd, and then they went back to Los Angeles. Basically, they left their hearts in the Bay Area, though. They couldn’t wait to return.

We just received wet proofs from the printer for Experiencing Nirvana, Grunge in Europe, 1989. These are a few pages of shots by Bruce Pavitt and Steve Double that we wanted to test. Scale is about 11″ high per cut page. All in all, the book includes over 200 unseen shots of Sub Pop bands from Washington State, Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Tad.
