The Beach

Once upon a time, there was a beach, a beautiful stretch of sand composed of the erosion of thousands of years of life and the solid foundation of rock beneath its surface. The sea would visit it every day, in great blue waves that replenished the beach in life and sediment, yet took away with it shards and fragments to deposit elsewhere.

The beach was so very beautiful. Soft, golden sand that stretched on for mile upon untainted mile. Clean, crisp air that tasted of peace, and an ever-changin...

The Sea

Crash and crest and crash and crest, and so it goes on. Waves, lapping at the beach and tasting samples of the sand that it needs to feast on. Stripping it away in thick salted licks leaving seaweeds and periwinkles in its place. The Sea takes only what needs to be taken, then replenishing with offerings that cannot replace but can enhance what life is already there. Shards of shells glisten and twinkle in the sunlight as canny-eyed seagulls swoop down to feed on what is left behind. Crash an...

Diary Drabble: Information

Even with all the information to hand it seemed an impossible task. To know what needed to be done even when fully armed was beyond imagining. Yet there was no way around it. All his overthinking won’t stop this from happening. He read through everything again, like it wasn’t already memorised, like the words might rearrange themselves on the page. He closed his eyes, yet even that wouldn’t rid him of his duty for long. He packed his bag, checked his appearance, then made his way out of the a...

Diary Drabble: Card

What has his life come to? That he’d be standing in front of a display rack in a greeting card shop, trying to find the perfect card? he’s never been this sentimental. Normally, on the few occasions he’s felt obliged to buy a card before now, he’s grabbed the first vaguely appropriate thing he’s seen, and been done with it. But this/ This is a whole new experience. He wants to get it right; for him. Hearts? Glitter? Cheesy verses? He wants it all. But which one is right? His first choice, pro...

Diary Drabble: Queen

She ruled the country like a queen, even though she was nothing but a clueless politician. Someone who had no business being in politics, when every one of her decisions were about self-interest, not what was best for her constituents. She wore a crown of perfectly styled hair, and crown jewels that were in fact some kind of corporate sponsorship. Her opinions shifted on the winds of wealth, and pity any who disagreed with her. Elections won solely through deception and deceit. But a new powe...

Diary Drabble: Margin

This was the problem with writing by hand. So many lines crossed out until the pen pushed through with a hundred barely legible, others scribbled in the margin. For some things, words flowed freely, but for others, he couldn’t make a single one fit. It shouldn’t be this arduous a task planning his speech for his brother’s wedding. He should find inspiration just for being his best man. Perhaps if he wasn’t marrying his best friend, the words would be easier, and he’d care not less, but not so...

Diary Drabble: Abundant

The air was clean, the food abundant. A sense of harmony resonated across the world. They stepped off this ship with a sense of purpose; this was to be their new home. Not that the residents already living there had any say in the matter. They approached the ship with caution, a mixture of shields and gifts as they came to a stop. Had they known they were coming? Watched in trepidation as they dropped from the sky? Or maybe they weren’t the first visitors to this utopia of a planet. Because a...

Diary Drabble: Split

It was when he bent to get his change out of the vending machine, that he felt them split, the noise of it audible across the cafeteria. He froze, daring not to look down at his trousers. Was it a good underwear day? A grotty one? He was relieved at least to know that he was wearing some. Otherwise, well. the titters behind him would give way to gasping, and he’d have struggled to cover himself over with a hastily tied shirt. He grabbed his coffee, straightening up as discreetly as possible,...
