The @GoddessFish Presents Silent Love by Casey Clipper

 photo MEDIAKITsilent-love-final2-02_zpsb5cb223b.jpg

Silent Love
by Casey Clipper

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Former Navy SEAL Sean Millen has been perfectly fine with his bachelorhood until recently, when he realizes he's unhappy with his single status. Unfortunately, his playboy reputation doesn't offer him the type of woman that could fulfill his days and nights as well as settle into the specific life he envisions.
Four years ago, Beth Connors' world was entirely altered. Beth spends her days trying to remain invisible in order to avoid unwanted attention. Each night she sheds grief-filled tears over the former life she once led but will never be able to regain.
When Beth literally runs into him. Doctor Sean Millen. A force of nature. A rock. A reputable heartbreaker, who takes an immediate interest in her, there's no place for her to hide. But Beth's natural instinct to push Sean away to save herself and him from the difficult task of adjusting their lives to her shortcomings is always front and center. Yet, Beth secretly longs for love. Is she strong enough to tear down the walls of her self-imposed prison?
Sean finds himself falling for a woman who is determined to reject his every advance and deny their surprisingly deep connection. Can Sean push past Beth's concrete walls that she refuses to destroy? Or will Beth's shocking revelation of her past prevent them from finding the love they both deserve? Or will a tragic accident pull Sean and Beth apart permanently?
*This is not a cliffhanger.
**Not suitable for under 18 years old. Contains sexual scenes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Sean followed Beth to her parents' front door. This meeting could make or break their relationship. They'd been dating for close to two months and things were terrific. Well, maybe an occasional hiccup here and there when Beth got into her own head, but he dealt with those moments, then they moved forward. But a few days ago, before this planned dinner, Beth went home to talk to her parents. When she returned to his house three hours later, she remained unusually quiet and refused to discuss what happened between her and her parents. That had him worried for days. Now, here he was, feeling like he was walking into the lion's den.

Beth opened the front door and stepped inside. "Mom. Dad," she called out.

An older version of Beth rounded the corner towards the back of the house. Good lord, if that was how Beth would look in thirty years, with any luck, Sean would still have her on his arm, he was a damn lucky man. Mrs. Connor was a knockout. Though she stood a couple inches taller than Beth, they could pass for sisters.

"Hi, honey," Mrs. Connors said. Her eyes scanned Sean, but she approached her only child and embraced her with a secure hold. When she pulled back, Beth's mom looked her up and down. "You look fantastic. You glow."

Naturally Beth flushed bright red. Sean wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her into his body for security. She melted into him, and Mrs. Connors perceptive eyes didn't miss their interaction.

"Mom," Beth said softly. "This is Sean Millen. Sean, this is my mother, Jill Connors."

"Mrs. Connors, it's nice to meet you," Sean said respectfully.

"Thank you, Sean. It's wonderful to meet you. Elizabeth has told me loads about you." She smiled lovingly at her daughter. Those matching ocean blue eyes of Beth's glittered with some sort of emotion he wasn't able to decipher. "Please, come inside and meet Mr. Connors."

They followed Jill down the hallway a few steps then took a left into a large living room. As they entered the room, Mr. Connors stood from a recliner in the far corner of the room.

Oh, Christ.

Mr. Connors was an older version of himself. Well, except add twenty pounds, four more inches in height, and two more inches in biceps, thighs, and chest. Clearly the man maintained his work out religiously, noticeable from all the bulging muscles that flexed as the man moved. A military haircut made his distinct features all the more intimidating. The man looked as young as his wife and was just as good looking. Sean would bet money in the man's early days he had his fair share of women. His laser glare focused straight in on him. Shit.

"Daddy," Beth said softly as she approached him.

Mr. Connors reluctantly tore his glare from Sean and focused on his daughter. As soon as his dark blue, piercing eyes met his daughter's ocean blues, the man visibly melted. His features lightened, and he actually smiled.

"Sweetheart," he said, leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"Daddy, I want to introduce you to Sean Millen. Sean, this is my dad, Michael Connors," she said.

Mike wrapped a possessive left arm around his daughter, tucked her into the crook of his body, and stuck out his right hand. "Mr. Millen."

"Mr. Connors," Sean said respectfully.

"My daughter tells me you were in the Navy," Mr. Connors tested.

"I was, sir," he answered. The air in the room was stiff and tense. Mrs. Connors stood in the background watching the scene looking as if she was ready to jump in to interject. Beth gnawed on her bottom lip, her eyes darting between her father and her boyfriend.

"She tells me you and your brother were SEALs."

"That's right," he answered.

Mr. Connors titled his head and studied Sean, sizing him up. "You both went in together?"

"Yes." For some reason, Sean didn't feel too chatty about his life. He didn't like the feel of the room or the interrogation. He was too damn old to put up with this shit. He wasn't an eighteen year old kid about to take a daughter to the prom. For fuck's sake, he was going to be forty in less than two years.

"Why?" Mike barked.

Sean narrowed his eyes.

Immediately Mr. Connors shoved his daughter out from under his arm and got into Sean's face. "You think you're a badass? You think you can come into my house and get our blessing for dating my daughter who's more than ten years younger than you? You need to find someone your own age, SEAL."

He spat SEAL like it was a curse.

"Daddy!" Beth cried.

"Michael!" Jill scolded.

Sean refused to back down. "What is this, some sort of test to see if I'll walk away? Not. Going. To. Happen. I love your daughter. I respect her and admire her. I spend my days worrying about her and my nights holding her close." He took a step closer. "As for my tour in the Navy, I went so I could get a medical doctorate. My parents couldn't afford the schooling. My brother refused to allow me to go in alone. We've always been close, and we couldn't imagine leaving each other for that many years. It was the best decision both of us made."

"Michael," Jill said again. "Look at your daughter."

Mr. Connors' head snapped to his baby girl, whose face was red and tear streaked while her mother held her.

"Beth," Mike breathed. "I'm sorry, honey."

She hiccupped.

"Beth," Sean said softly.

She left her mother's arms and went straight to...Sean's and buried her head into his chest. He wrapped her up securely, kissed her head, and ran a soothing hand down her soft tresses. After a minute, he lifted her face to look him in the eyes. "It's all right, sweetheart," he assured her. "It'll be fine. We're just feeling each other out, baby. It's what we nasty military men do. We protect the women we love. You're father has probably done that your entire life, right?"

A sniffle and a nod was the only response he received.

"Elizabeth," Mr. Connors said with bite. Clearly he didn't like his daughter choosing her boyfriend over him.

Sean nodded to her father for her to focus on him. She looked her dad's direction but remained tight against Sean.

"You're my only daughter. My baby girl. No man, including this one standing in my living room, who just admitted you're sleeping with, is good enough for you. No one ever will be. I need to make certain he's in this for the right reasons," Mr. Connors insisted. He crossed his large arms over his broad chest. "Got a problem with that, young lady?"

"Dad," she protested.

"Do you?" he barked.

"Yes." Her head went up and her chin out.

Mike's eyes shined with adoration and respect. His mouth quirked up.

"Okay, enough testosterone before dinner," Jill interrupted and put an end to the palpable tension. "Dinner is ready. Everyone to the dining room."

She bustled out of the room with the group dutifully following her.

Beth remained in Sean's arms while they went to the dining room. Well, wouldn't that be a story to tell their grandchildren some day.

A #MFRWAuthor Event - Get Hooked on Books

So many books so many great authors.

I love doing the Book Hooks event -

This week I'm sharing my new short story Stormy.

   photo TG-Stormy-300x450_zps64274550.jpg
I wrote this book because I wanted a hot read for women over the age of forty.
Can women over forty still have hot fun?
I asked mature women if they still enjoy some wild bedroom fun and they all agreed that they did.
so
Here's a blurb from Stormy
“Damn it, Daniel if I find you with a young chickadee like I did my ex-husband,” she growled as she trudged up the staircase, “I might be tempted to...”
Her gaze immediately fell on the empty king-size bed. Exasperated by her inability to find him, she quickly scanned the entire room...desk area, open closet, bathroom...the door closed. Light glowed through the seam between the floor and the bottom edge. “Daniel, if you’re in the bathroom come out this minute.”
The entrance opened, and he stood in the doorway.
Problem, he wore only a towel.
Awe, shit...she didn’t need to see his bare chest covered in crisp dark hair, the sculptured muscles of his arms and shoulders, developed pecs, and thick thighs.
Damn, how was she supposed to resist such temptation?
Stormy is available for preorder from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N8797R4 or UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00N8797R4?*Version*=1&*entries*=0Due out Oct. 15Have a great day,

LONG TIME WALK ON WATER  by Joan Barbara Simon

They happen to meet at a bus-stop, Emily and Jack.
A tale of how the humble live whilst waiting for their dreams to come true.
*
In the following excerpt, news flies faster than Lester Piggot (a famous English jockey and him small like a squirrel); fast as a shame from the J.A. (as Jamaicans call their country) to the UK.

Martha Brae, October —, 19—
Dear Rose,
I’m sure everything in England is going fine for you. As soon as I open your letter and parcel, I sit down to write and tell you thank you, that Marlene and Leroy overjoy with the things you send them. You know me don’t have a good head like you, and me is not someone love pen and paper, so I make it short. Marlene draw this little picture for you. She say you must make sure you keep it because when she come to England she is going to look and see if you still got it. The child cheeky as a shame.You say everything is fine and I believe you, but me also hear bad story them from other people. I hear how black people can’t go out at night and have to fear the skinhead them like the blacks in the fifties did afraid of the Teddy Boys. But because you don’t go out so much you probably don’t get to hear this. And other people talk how difficult it is to get a job or somewhere to live because the white people them prejudice and want to squash you up in a cooby like a chicken. I know you doing alright but I don’t know if I could pick up myself go to a country where people look down at me. Is enough that them behave like that right here in Jamaica without you go abroad for the same treatment and get spit on even more. The black sometimes as bad as the white people them and ignorance spread out all over the world.We talking about white. Me hear you have a white boyfriend. Is true or is not true? You don’t have to hide it from me. Me hear him is one old old white man you meet at the bus-stop and him pay you fare everywhere you want to go in London. Him was one chaufur, or how you call it, and use to drive the big politician you see in the television up and down the country. Is true? Me also hear him and Richard is best friend. Is how come you don’t tell me the half of what happening over there, Rose? Is how come I have to find out everything second hand? People them asking me if me know this and if me know that, I must know because my good friend in England. I don’t know what to say and I don’t know what to believe when the people them talk. Don’t you think it’s time for you to put me in the picture?It look like I am going to have another child next year. I don’t need no doctor to tell me I’m nine weeks pregnant. I don’t tell nobody - them will see for themselves in time. Glad him gone. Me did chase him out. Him too little and nasty. One more mouth to feed, I would like to know what the Lord have in mind for me? You know what it say in the Bible, to them who got shall be given and from them who don’t have shall be taken away. Well at least that was a piece of clever thinking you did going to England. Now you move out of the one camp into the other while me still sitting right there as always with no way of getting out. Maybe me fix up myself with one a them Hinglanman come back to J.A. and got a little something in him pocket. Who knows, such a nice girl like me (smile).Well, this was just a thank you letter and to give you my little piece of news. Take care of yourself and don’t forget that I’m waiting for explanations.
Your friend,Junie.

The novel is not a typical story where you know how things will end even before you've even finished the first page. I promise, you won't! Not until the very last words. And it's more than a mere love story. It’s about faith; about loving the life you see ahead of you, in your dreams. And allowing no one to take it away from you.’(Joan Barbara Simon, interviewed by Lucy Walton for Female First)

Darby a Intriguing Story by Roy Pipes

   photo 51ychd42P7L_BO2204203200_PIsitb-sticker-v3-bigTopRight0-55_SX278_SY278_PIkin4BottomRight122_AA300_SH20_OU01__zpse0b0a0f6.jpg

Darby, Hanging Dog, and Doodlebug, Doodlebug, Your House is on Fire are available on Amazon.com.  You can read the first two chapters free.

Darby is a story of Danger, Suspense, Romance and Intrigue, Interwoven with the History and Culture of the Appalachians. It contains feuds, duels, and the Appalachian Dialect. The setting begins in 1895 in the small community of Darby in Wilkes County, NC.

Find at amazon : http://www.amazon.com/Darby-William-Roy-Pipes-ebook/dp/B00CNTJCKA/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1410121499&sr=1-1&keywords=darby+by+william+roy+pipes

Some of other Roy Pipes books

Hanging Dog is a sequel to my novel Darby, and a story of Love, Romance, Drama, and Intrigue taking place in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. It tells how Isaac and his wife Shirley struggled to make a life for themselves against what, at times, are seemingly impossible odds. Even though Hanging Dog is a stand-alone novel, it will be slightly more enjoyable if you read Darby first.

In Doodlebug, Doodlebug, Your House is on Fire. I put my love of the Appalachian Mountains and the people there into an intriguing murder mystery involving a three year old boy, the only witness to the murder of his family.

Guest Today Richard Brawer - His Thoughts on Publisher's Contracts

Thanks Richard for being on my blog. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Publisher's contracts.

 photo RichardBrawerAuthorPic_zps84869f11.jpg

Hi Tina,

Publishers going out of business is a major problem when publishing with independent publishers. I have published seven books with three publishers. All were small publishers who did wonderful jobs turning my manuscripts into published books. One has gone out of business in this economic downturn. Sadly, the owners or two passed away.

With so many publishers my lawyer and I have read and revised a lot of contracts. Here are a few things you should consider when reviewing a publisher’s contract:

Do not agree to give them the right of first refusal on your next book. You may not like the way the publisher put out your book. If you have a clause that says you will give them your next book you’re stuck with them.

There should be a clause that the contract ends after a certain number of years, usually 7, and that your rights return to you at the end of that period unless you decided to renew with the publisher.

The contract must read that the publisher will pay for everything necessary to bring your book to market including cover, editing, formatting and obtaining an ISBN number and that they will publish your book within a certain time period. I like six months but some publishers need more time.

If you and the publisher’s editor cannot agree on changes in your book you should have the right to cancel the contract without a fee. Not agreeing with an editor is rare but it could happen.

The contract should say you own your characters which means in case you want to write a sequel using the same characters you have the right to do so.

Movie, film and TV rights: The chances of your book being made into a movie are as big if not bigger than winning the lottery. But as they say in the lottery ads, “Hey, you never know.”

Most publishers will have a clause in the contract about film rights. I have not given any publisher the movie, film and TV rights to my books. However, the publisher deserves something for publishing your book so I agreed to give the publisher 15% of any money I received from selling the film rights and I keep 85%. I picked 15% because that is a general agent fee. You should have a lawyer draw this up in very specific terms.

Because publishers created the cover, they own it. If the publisher goes out of business or your contract terminates and you want to use the cover the publisher will ask you to pay for it. Try to get your contract to read, the cover reverts to you if the publisher goes out of business or ceases to operate. The argument I used is that, through no fault of my own you (the publisher) have ceased to sell my book, but I have spent a lot of time and money promoting the book for which you made money before you ceased operations. I have been successful with this argument in four instances.

However in the case of a publisher ceasing operations, the publisher does not own the edited book. The copyright should be in your name not the publishers. Make sure there is nothing in the contract that says they can charge you for the edited book should they cease operations. So when they send the edited copy to you for approval make sure you save it to disc or some other save format and not just in your computer.

As a side comment I’d like to mention something about Amazon when it comes to republishing a book with the same cover and title from a publisher that has gone out of business. Here is my question to Amazon:

I received some unfortunate news that my publisher is going out of business. I have retained the rights to the books. Because Amazon never seems to remove a book from its library regardless of whether Amazon has been told the book is no longer available, I was thinking about changing the title and the cover of the book, and re-publishing on KDP. What happens to the reviews? Are the reviews transferable to the KDP version?

Amazon.com’s answer.

When a detail page is created (that means a book), it becomes a permanent catalog page on Amazon.com that will remain even if the creator’s inventory sells out or the book is delisted.

I can suggest we link the old and new book in one title set (which means the same title) so that they can share reviews.

This means that the newly listed book will have its designated product page but the two books will share the same reviews.

We link different editions, bindings, formats or color variations of a product in our system to make it easier for customers to find the version they're looking for. Our intention is to provide all the relevant review information we possibly can, regardless of the version. As a result, the same reviews can appear on the product detail pages for all versions.

In conclusion, if you reacquire the rights on your books and want to republish them you have some hard choices to make. Change the covers and titles which will make them new books without reviews, or leave them the same and have two books on Amazon with the same cover and title.

A final comment on publisher’s contracts:  You should definitely have a lawyer go over the contract. All publishers’ contracts are different, but if you (or your lawyers) see something you don’t like then try to get it changed. If you can’t then you have two choices: Take a chance, or don’t sign.

PUBLISHER’S ROYALTIES

My first publisher’s contract stated they will pay all the publication expenses to bring the book to market.  However, they had a clause in their contract that said they do not pay royalties until they recoup their publishing expenses from book sales. My naiveté at the time let me pass right over this clause without a thought. You should never accept a contract with a clause like this. This makes the publisher basically a vanity press that charges you to publish your book.

 The royalty clauses in your contract should be very specific and state:

 When the royalties will be paid.

How much the author will receive for a print book sale and an e-book sale.

What dollar or percentage amount of your royalties the publisher can hold back against potential returns and for how long.

The minimum amount that has to be earned before a check is issued.

The amount an author will be paid for “special sales, custom product deals and premium offers.”

I hope my experiences help you with when you are ready to sign a publisher’s contract.

I have found another publisher for my latest book, “Love’s Sweet Sorrow,” a romantic suspense novel. I think I finally made a good match this time because this publisher is a mid-sized with a good track record and four partners. www.vinspirepublishing.com

Book Jacket of “Love’s Sweet Sorrow”

It is said opposites attract. There can’t be two people more opposite than Ariel and Jason. Ariel is a traditional Quaker with an absolute aversion to war. Jason is the lead council for America's largest weapons manufacturer.

Their budding romance is thrown into turmoil when Jason uncovers evidence linking his employer to international arms deals that could devastate America. His determination to stop the treason puts Ariel in the middle of dangerous territory.

As the chases to retrieve the evidence intensify Ariel is forced to kill to save Jason’s life. She withdraws into a battle raging inside her, unable to reconcile whom she has been to whom she has become. Delving deeply into hers and Jason’s long-held opposing convictions she questions whether they are truly meant to be together.

Readers have said about Love’s Sweet Sorrow:
“Excellent writing, impeccable plotting, and nicely developed characters. Shoshana Hathaway

“Your writing is very strong, and you have developed a gripping story.” The Writer’s Edge

  “The characters and the plot were both extremely well-crafted.” S. Lynn

Legal Action
by Kimball Lee

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Bright, beautiful attorney, Charlotte Christiansen has never lost a court case. She's built a reputation as a cool, on the rise lawyer while trying to escape the 'naughty cheerleader' pictorial in American Jock magazine that she posed for to pay her way through law school. She shares the top floor of a historic San Diego building with her best friends from college who happen to be two very male, very sexy Special Forces operatives. Her ex is a celebrity NFL quarterback who could pass for a Viking God. She's surrounded by hot men but her life revolves around work and she doesn't have time for love or sex. Until Alexander Bly, the stop-the-clock gorgeous, billionaire publishing magnate becomes her newest client at the law firm. He's the man responsible for the magazine cover that turned Charlotte into every man's sex fantasy. Bly has had women and the world at his beck and call, but no woman has ever rocked his world. Charlotte is about to. When they come together the desire and sex are white-hot and all-consuming, but falling in love takes them completely by surprise.
EXCERPTS
She couldn’t stop herself from turning her face up to him.  He ran the tips of his fingers across her cheek, her lips; the smooth line of her jaw.
He let his fingers linger on her lips, and she caught them and kissed the tips.  He kissed her eyes and forehead, then led her to the SUV and opened the door for her.
“Do you get sea sick?” he asked.
“No,” she said.
“Good, I have things I want to talk to you about, Charlotte. This is exhilarating and frightening for both of us, I believe.  But we’ll make sense of it if we both set our doubts aside and listen to each other.  I realize that being a lawyer is the most important thing to you, and I get it.  You’re a year younger than I was when I first met you, and back then work was everything to me.  Of course I slept with every woman I found the least bit attractive as well; but I was careful, always.  We’ll talk more about that on the boat.  I’m just saying don’t turn away from us and be sorry later that you did.”
“Boat,” she said, “what boat?”
“My boat, we’re going out on it, we’ll spend the night on the ocean, it’s the best sleep you’ll ever have.  The rocking of the boat is hypnotic.  It’ll be just us in our own little world.”
“I didn’t bring any clothes. I don’t have a swim suit.”
He pointed to the back seat, and it was covered with bags from Saks and Neiman Marcus.
Stuck in The Rewrite Mode #writingtip
Thought I'd share the check list of things I look at when rewriting a book.
The story -
·         Have I written enough?
·         Is there emotion on every page?
·         Are the Five Senses felt on each page?
1.      see
2.      hear
3.      taste
4.      smell
5.      touch
6.      Color and texture included
 ·         Plot line –
1.      strong hooks
2.      compelling inciting incident
3.      intense climax
4.      satisfying resolution
5.      Analysis the value of each scene
·         Character Development
1.      their journey
2.      character arch
3.      Dialogue – unique for each person
·         Backstory
1.      Too much or not enough
·         Pacing
1.      Using MSWord to check readability, which increases pacing.
 This is only the first list of things I check.
Hope it helps,
Tina
