Science fiction and classic crime novels have long been favorites of author K.C. Sivils. A fan of past noir masters such as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, Sivils also enjoys the current generation of storytellers like Matt Abraham, Renee Pawlish and Alex P. Berg.

The combination of film noir and science fiction in director Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi classic Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep into the masterful Harrison Ford vehicle Blade Runner encouraged him to consume as much of both genre’s as possible.

When not working at his real job, Sivils enjoys his family, his dogs, writing and rocking out to classic rock bands like the Rolling Stones and New Wave rockers The Cars.

I wonder how in certain instances in my life, people less qualified for a job got the job I was after.

If you like the idea of conspiracies and the "inner circle of the elite" taking care of their own, that might make for a good mystery or thriller.

Fortunately, my life and the jobs I pursue are not the high stakes, get someone killed for poking around variety. Some of us just aren't Jason Borne or Inspector Sullivan types!(less)

E-mail from readers can be interesting for an author. I particularly like e-mails that ask specific questions about why a character did this or why did your story line take this twist, etc. I’d like to use this newsletter to answer one reader’s question in particular.

Why did you give Sully a cybernetic eye?

It’s a good question. At least I think so.

“He just looked at me, looked through me with an expression I couldn’t read.”
K.C. Sivils, Last Train to Nowhere

“life has risk. It is filled with pain. God doesn't promise to spare us pain. Pain shapes us. So you have a choice, my friend. You can feel the pain of broken trust and lost friendship because you first trusted another enough to be their friend. Or you can feel the pain and misery of bitter loneliness because you chose not to have a friend. I prefer to take a chance and have friends, friends I place my trust in. I have lived with the other choice, and I won't live that way again.”
