A Wild West Peek at Romance Author Susan Payne

Picture Who - History, especially the 1800s of western United States, has always held a draw for me.  Regency England with their women encircled by social restrictions juxtaposed with the American west where woman had to be as strong and independent as a man to survive. These are the women I write about.
Since my first published work in December 2019, I have completed the Sweetwater Series and gone on to several novels both in historical western romance and Regency romance. So far, I am enjoying the writing enormously. My recent book, #15, In From the Cold will be released on September 13, 2021.
Interests vary widely but tend to be more sedate rather than sports or activities.  I have loved learning new things which often takes me on hour-long reading sessions on the internet.  One thing leading me to another such as the Russian foods I learned about. I used them in several novels afterwards including the special wedding bread ceremony.  I collect recipe books and old recipe cards so that fits in with another hobby.  I often use mealtimes and women talking in the kitchen preparing meals when telling my stories.
Network - Two of my daughters have been my supporters and Beta readers since I began.  They read for the entertainment value and characterizations. Pick out any inconsistencies or question a motive. I am a student of people and often can hear multiple conversations if I’m in a crowd. I have always ‘people watched’ and studied psychology. Especially how the mind grows and matures.  The differences between male and females in brain usage.
I had the same song going through my mind for years.  I later heard things like that referred to as a ‘ear worm’.  It was I Did It My Way by Frank Sinatra.  Not that I loved the lyrics or the music – it simply never left me. Regrets, I have a few but then again too few to mention…
Desk -  As far as research for my writing – I may or may not do anything. As I wrote previously, I love to get new information of anything that catches my attention. Sometimes I use it right then, but most often I store it away and it pops up when a storyline needs it to. I’m a pantser which means my stories are written as they ‘come’ to me.  My characters, many times as a couple, introduce themselves and tell me their story.  I write down as much as I can as quickly as I can – like a stenographer on steroids. Where we are, how they are dressed, their manners and demeanors. Many times something I’ve read about becomes part of the story.  I do need to check on historical accuracies as far as laws of the times and things like that since I most often write historical romances. I love the internet for that.
Outrageous talent - I can roll my tongue and bend it backwards to stroke my tonsils…interesting party game.  I can also take-off my bra without removing my top, but at my age it isn’t very exciting any more. LOL.
What I like and love - I always have room for a hot fudge sundae. Yummm. Now I want one and I don’t have the fixings.  I purposely don’t keep the topping on hand due to this type of thing.
As a child, I loved playing all sorts of card games. I met some kids who came up to the lake where I grew-up and taught me Canasta.  I couldn’t get enough – we would play from dawn to dusk. I’d get my housework done (we all had chores) and go to their screened-in back porch.  Now I play Hand and Foot – 7 decks of cards and similar game skills needed - with my daughter and her husband.  We play for hours several days in a row when we can get together.
Some Character insights - The names for my characters are of their own choosing.  I don’t mind having a name re-used.  After all there were six other Susans in my graduating class of 100 total. Some chose Sue or Susie – I stuck with the name on my birth certificate. I pretty much allow my characters to do the same.
The most difficult scene I ever wrote was when the heroine died. Granted she was in her late 80s maybe even 90s; but I found it difficult to say goodbye.  Even now I am tearing -up over her demise.  She had her HEA and loving husband for years (he died a year before her and she missed him); but it is always difficult to know they are gone.  I much prefer to leave them as they are just learning about life and how it will play-out for them. In From the Cold

by
Susan Payne
Steamy but not erotic.
Matthew left his family ranch to make it on his own. Alaska seemed far enough away from his brother’s wife to heal his broken heart.

A Peek at what others are saying
From Wild Women Reviews: In From the Cold  9/13/21
Recently, we had the privilege to meet Luke Foster from Susan Payne’s An Unexpected Wife. Luke, a hard-working Nebraska rancher with a slew of younger brothers to ride herd on, rescues the town librarian Lorelei from desperate straits and thereby forges a deep and everlasting future for himself, the woman he comes to love, and starting a new branch of the Foster family tree.
One of those ‘branches’ was Luke’s younger brother Matthew who, after one look at Lorelei, knew he needed to make a life for himself—and that Nebraska was not the place to do it. Hence, we found Matthew traveling to Alaska in the historical romance, In From the Cold, written by Susan Payne, and released by the Wild Rose Press.

Camping in the Fabulous Finger Lakes and Verdant Vermont

Happy Saturday everyone! Before I tell you about all my recent adventures, I have some exciting news. Jazz House is under contract! Whoot! Whoot! It's been a long time coming. I'll keep you posted of any developments. Now let's light the fire.
D. V.'s Glamping Must-Haves
To be a true glamper there are things that have to be on every trip, at least for me. My list does vary depending on season and destination but I'm never without the following
Coffee. I have many fallbacks in case of emergency. Yep, the regular drip pot is always ready to go. But what if there's no electricity? The old blue and white ceramic stovetop Corning pot is ready to roll, or perk. Sometimes while traveling I get the hankering for a cuppa. Purchasing coffee on the road can go many ways from great to awful. This is where the French Press comes in. Boil the water on the gas stove, pour it into the grounds, stir, wait (or go potty) and press. Voila! Delicious every time.
Books. There's a Kindle app in my phone and before we head out I make sure a couple of books are down loaded. You never know when you will have cell or Wi-Fi. Sitting around the fire late into the night reading is one of my favorite pastimes. There's also a few physical books waiting just in case.
Speaking of sitting around the fire, sometimes it just won't light. Wood is damp or the campfire sprites are mischievous, you never know. In my tool box is a propane torch, yep, I cheat. Fire up that puppy and snap, crackle, flame.
Misc. other always haves. Hubby, because who else is going to back up the 41' behemoth and get rid of spiders? Hali, my doggo, because she's adorable.
These are a few of my must haves on any trip. What do or would you find necessary?
We had a lovely time the past week traveling. First off we hit Seneca Falls, NY. Hubby's favorite question is, "Why did we go to Seneca Falls?" If any of you know his birthday is December 6th, which is also St. Nicholas Day. He loves all thing Christmas and builds outside displays for favorite Christmas classics. We have Snoopy's doghouse among others things. So Seneca Falls is the inspiration for one of the pictures below. Can you guess which?

We also enjoyed visiting a few wineries. My sister and I up until the the pandemic were fans of the Finger Lakes Wine Festival in Watkins Glen NY. After the first couple of times, instead of doing shots of wine in the tents, knew what our favorites were. We'd grab a bottle (or two) from those wineries and head over to the park for the live music and food trucks. So, my designated driver, Pete, brought me to a few of my favorites. Not because I like owls, well I do but for this conversation it's not important what is, is the Thirsty Owl Wine Company has a great selection. My favorite is Snow Owl. Here's the link if you want to check them out. www.thirstyowl.com/
We also visited Swedish Hill Winery, I love the Riesling at swedishhill.com/our-locations/swedish...
and finally Miles Wine Cellars has a white called Ghost Wine AND a ghostly history.
mileswinecellars.com/ I'm sipping a glass of this at the time of this writing.

After visiting the museum and area we drove over to Vermont. The state is gorgeous at this time of year. I'm sure other times as well, but we are Autumn people. Time spent at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science was amazing. I think I had more fun there than anyone at the time and even climbed the tower above the canopy. Pete's not a fan of heights. vinsweb.org/

I hope you enjoyed today's campfire chat. We have another trip coming up in Lancaster Pa. Some of you may know it's one of my favorite places. We're going full circle this trip. In 1998 Pete and I took our first camping trip to Lancaster in a borrowed Pop-up trailer. We're going to be back at this campground later this month. I can't wait to see all the changes, so stay connected.

Driving to destinations can be a long and tedious day. What makes it fly by for me? Audio books. This summer I enjoyed The Chronicles of Narnia in it's entirety. From The Magician's Nephew to The Last Battle Kenneth Branagh, Alex Jennings, Michael York, Lynn Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, Jeremy North, and Patrick Stewart kept me engaged and entertained. 33 Hours and 45 minutes covered it. Whether you are an adult or child this is a timeless set of stories that is as fresh and relevant today as when it first became published in the 1950s.

Take a Peek Through Author and Playwright Susan Leigh Furlong's Window

Picture Who
I am Susan Leigh Furlong, a retired first and fourth grade teacher, a published author and playwright, and a practicing grandmother, living in a small town in Ohio. Since I last visited on “Peek Through the Window,” I have endured continuing Covid-19 restrictions and been vaccinated. Then I spent forty-one days in the hospital at my husband’s side, and now rejoice at his slow but steady recovery here at home. On April 29 he had emergency quadruple bypass surgery, followed by an infection in his leg where they harvested the vein for the bypasses. The massive complications from the infection were terrifying, but with intense medical treatments he fought back and made it home, a weakened but determined man with a wife who now knows more about nursing than she ever dreamed she would. We are grateful to be working toward a “new normal.”
On a brighter note, our granddaughter started her sophomore year at college in computer engineering, our son was promoted to Senior Engineer, and my third book, Keeper of My Dreams, launched on September 6, 2021 with The Wild Rose Press.

Important reasons I write:
I write because I have to – my sanity depends on it. For as long as I can remember, characters and stories floated around in my head, and I had to work them out, first every night in bed before I fell asleep, and later when I could finally write them down. I wrote, directed, and starred in my first play when I was nine years old, inspired by Japanese kimonos sent to us from a friend.
Even when I was a full time teacher, wife, and mother, I spent most of my free time writing down stories and books. Some of my favorites are the ones I wrote every year for my granddaughter about the adventures of Princess Allison in the Kingdom of Furlong. It took years before I had the courage to see if I could get anything of these writings officially published.
While I am thrilled to see my words in print – Sometimes I reread those words and wonder who wrote them! – my greatest joy comes from bringing the characters to life and dropping them in whatever setting I find. If, for some reason, I take a break from writing, the stories haunt my dreams as night, and I have trouble sleeping. I have to write!

New ideas – Where do you get them?
“People watching” is one of my sources for ideas. I love to imagine what kind of life each person I see has. I also check out pictures of people on calendars and do the same thing. Sometimes a face just hits me as someone I need to write about.
Another source of ideas comes from doing historical research. I may sound like a real nerd, but I don’t care. I love to look through old books, collections, and newspapers. How people lived fascinates me. My allergies flair up – lots of coughing and sneezing – with these old papers, but the Internet has been a tremendous help for that.
I find so many unbelievable things that really happened. Child kings were held prisoner by their guardians, wars were fought over queens who refused to marry at age four, and the Chinese thought gunpowder was a life-extending elixir until it blew up their houses! Also George Washington had an elaborate spy network that was so secret no one knew about it until it was uncovered in this century.
You can’t make this stuff up, but you can write about it!

Doubts you’ve struggled with as an author
Sometimes a feeling comes over me that all this work I’ve put into my stories has been a waste of my time. Who do I think I am that I call myself a writer? Does anyone want to read my words? Has the time and money it takes to promote a book been pointless?  Should I spend more time in reality instead of in the lives of characters I create?
Recently I experienced a period of time when I absolutely could not write. I sat at the computer and no words came or the ones that did were few and meaningless. It was a terrible time, and I can understand why so many famous writers turned to alcohol to dull the heartache. I realize now that the stress of my husband’s illness and hospitalization traumatized me, and I accepted that with time, I would get my muse back. And I have.

Overcoming those doubts
For me the answer to overcoming doubts comes when I remember if I let my doubts stop me, I would miss every minute of the process of creation so much! Every book I have ever read since I learned to read made me ask “How did they do that?” How did that character or that setting come into being? How did the words and sentences go together to create a specific emotion in me? I want to find out those things in every book I read, every play or movie I see, and every story I hear. Once I figured out that I could put words on paper to create a situation or a story or a world that I could “live in” for a while, I was hooked on the process.
No one goes through life without doubts, but the joy of having found my calling, first in my teaching career - I truly love to work with children, and every morning I woke up and the first thing on my mind was what do I get to do today with my students? Now in my writing career, I wake up and think about what do I get to write/create today? That banishes my doubts.

What’s outside your main character’s window?
Leena Cullane Adair in Keeper of My Dreams has come to the city of Stirling in Scotland from her family estate in the southern Highlands. The calm quiet of a country estate is replaced by the unfamiliar bustle of a city, and Leena is overwhelmed.
Outside her window of the inn where she and her brothers are staying is a muddy, rut-filled road with a disgusting, smelly garbage trench running right down the middle. She must cross it to reach the mercer’s shop, but the many people, horses, and wagons dart around her in a confusing dance, and when a gaggle of geese causes her to fall, she is rescued from the mud by the handsome gunsmith, Reid Haliburton. Reid’s shop is also across the road from the inn where Leena is staying, and she spends her nights looking out the window toward his shop in hopes of catching a glimpse of him while he works.
Toward the end of Leena’s story, she and Reid’s oldest son are held prisoners on a pirate ship heading up the coast of Scotland. From the small porthole on the starboard side all she can see is endless ocean. She wonders if her memories of Reid will last for her lifetime or will they vanish with every wave of the water? Keeper of My Dreams

Susan Leigh Furlong

Gunpowder and love, both explosive.
A gun can kill. A heart can save.

A Peek Inside
Reid Haliburton, a skilled gunsmith, wants to control who uses his revolutionary handgun until a vicious pirate decides the gun will be his. The price of refusing is Reid’s life and those of his three young sons. Reid’s only chance to save his sons is to send them away and face the pirate’s wrath alone.
Leena Cullane Adair is stunned to find three lads hiding in her cart, and, although she only met their father a week ago, he holds her heart and her dreams, and she will do whatever it takes to keep him and his sons alive.
A Further Peek
Susan Leigh Furlong was born in the middle of a blinding spring snowstorm at the University of Michigan, which forced her mother to walk across campus in the snow to the hospital while in labor. Susan doesn’t remember any of this auspicious beginning, but it always makes for a good story! As a child she moved across the country six times to various big cities before the age of fourteen because of her father’s career in women’s ready-to-wear clothing. At college she met and married her love, and moved to his small hometown in southern Ohio, and you couldn’t get her out of there with a crowbar! She taught first grade and fourth grade and raised her children who did not have to change schools even once. Creating stories started early in life—as is typical of most writers—even before she could actually write. Then came handwritten pages stuffed in her underwear drawer, followed by stories created on a manual typewriter. Her first computer—a Commodore 64—was replaced by a series of computers and laptops, which her husband promised she could never fill up the storage space, but she always did. At age 32 she performed in her first community theater play—Guys and Dolls—where she quickly realized that she wanted to play ALL the parts, which is exactly what a writer does. She writes and/or directs church-related plays and sketches and also performs and sings with a music and drama ministry, LightReaders.
Her love of history led her to write two plays about her now hometown, presented in reader’s theater style by local citizens, followed by two non-fiction books about the local history published by Arcadia Publishing. She loves to do the research even though old books and documents make her cough and sneeze! Susan first discovered romance novels when she won a copy of Velvet Song by Jude Deveraux at the local bookstore. She reads all varieties of books, but historical romance is forever her first choice.
Steadfast Will I Be and By Promise Made were published by The Wild Rose Press in 2019 and 2020 respectively. By Promise Made won the NEST – National Excellence in Story Telling – for Historical Romance for 2021. Her third book – Keeper of My Dreams – a continuation of the Cullane family adventures - was released on September 6, 2021.

Take a Peek through the window of Judythe Morgan

[image error] Who- I’m a multi-genre writer and a weekly blogger where I share short blogs to make readers think and create memes from favorite quotes and photos. Once upon a time, I was a schoolteacher, a church pianist, a church services interpreter for the deaf, and a former mayor’s wife. I’m an Air Force daughter and Army wife. I’ve served as a Department of Army Civilian. Those experiences led to my four-book military romance series PROMISES. I’m married to a preacher’s son and have a preacher son, which explains where I get my ideas for the Fitzpatrick Family series about eight preacher kids who each find true love.
Interests besides writing- Jigsaw puzzles and gardening are my passions when I’m not writing. Puttering around in the dirt helps get the creative juices going when I’m having writer’s block. Puzzles are my weapon of choice when I have a plotting problem to tackle.
Network- I’m blessed to have a supportive husband and a fantastic writer’s group that meets weekly via Zoom. Since the pandemic, our meetings are online. Hubby’s always available to discuss a story or read for me.
Desk- I recently abandoned my traditional desk in the upstairs office to claim the dining room table. Who says an architect’s room labels on a blueprint are set in stone? Not me, and that’s how our dining room table became my desk and the room my office. I’m glad. There’s so much more room to spread out on a table that seats eight. Plus, I’m closer to the kitchen for those energy snacks.
Outrageous talent- It’s not a talent exactly, more of a habit that friends and family say is a bit obsessive. I swim every day. May through September I swim outside, and October through April move indoors to a sports medicine gym. I use the term swim very loosely. My stroke looks more like a frog doggy paddling.
Window- Our yard is a certified wildlife habitat. I’m always assured of seeing wild creatures out my windows and doors. Oodles of birds, butterflies, squirrels, opossums, raccoons, and deer come to visit. It’s easier than you might think to become a certified habitat. Check herewww.nwf.org/CertifiedWildlifeHabitat

Take A Peek Through the Window with today's Guest, C. B. Clark

Picture Who: Twisted Lies is my seventh romantic suspense novel published by The Wild Rose Press. When I’m not busy traveling around the globe or hiking and camping in the wilderness near my home in northern British Columbia, I can be found in front of my laptop plotting the next story.
Interests: I enjoy hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing with my husband and dog in the beautiful back country of northern British Columbia. Recently, we flew (dog included) in a small float plane into the rugged Chilcotin mountains and spent a glorious week hiking in the alpine, surrounded by stunning views of glaciers, azure lakes, wildflower-filled meadows, and tumbling waterfalls.
Network: Living in a small rural community limits face-to-face interactions with fellow authors, but I’ve made many online connections. One thing I’ve learned in my writing journey is that other authors are more than willing to help. They celebrate the highs and commiserate with you on the lows.
Desk: I write in my son’s old bedroom on his scarred school desk. A steaming cup of tea is on the desk, old time country music is playing in the background, and Penny, my Brittany dog, is lying on the bed. The desk and nearby wall are covered with multi-colored sticky notes where I’ve scrawled reminders and plot points. There’s also a small bulletin board on the wall with my favorite family photos pinned. A stack of reference books is on the shelf. My favorite go-to book is The Emotion Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglish.
Outrageous: I’ve watched every single BachelorBachelorette, and Bachelor in Paradise episode. It’s my guilty secret. Watching the show is like a car accident. You know you shouldn’t look, but you just can’t turn away.
Window: We live in the country, so when I look out my window I see a dense forest with towering fir trees, blooming wildflowers, and lush green plants. I often spot squirrels, deer, grouse, or a bear passing through. Once a great horned owl perched on the tree outside. This view of nature soothes my soul and encourages my creativity.

A New Release Peek with Randy Overbeck

Picture Who- Hi, I’m Dr. O. Randolph Overbeck, but my friends mostly call me Randy. I served children for four decades as a teacher, a college prof, and a school leader. Not surprisingly, this wealth of experience has provided a rich resource of real-life stories to draw on to craft my fiction, all featuring teachers as heroes. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 50 years—wow, where has the time gone?—and have a wonderful extended family of three adult children and loving spouses, and most important, seven incredible grandchildren. Unfortunately, they are scattered across the country.

Interests- I have several varied interests, not really connected. I’m a pretty decent cook—I do almost all the cooking in our house—and I love to explore new recipes, as long as they’re not too spicy. (One of my favorite sayings is “If God wanted you to eat it, it wouldn’t hurt going down.”) I’m serious about my exercise, committing to at least five active hour-long sessions per week, with my favorites being water aerobics and golf. I’m really into activities with the grandkids, you know, putt-putt, bowling, and mostly, riding roller coasters. My wife and I enjoy traveling and seeing new places, and we’ve been to most of the 50 states and a half dozen foreign countries. Lately, these travels have inspired the Haunted Shores Mysteries. Our last trip (pre-pandemic) was to a small town on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Network. I’ve always been a “connector” and learned early in my educational career the power of collaboration. As far as writing, I’m a member of the Mystery Writers of America, the Midwest Chapter. When I can, I participate in writing conferences such as Killer Nashville and Sleuthfest and work to connect with writers there as well. In addition to connecting with the fine authors at the Wild Rose Press, I belong to the Rare Reviews Book Club and try to learn from all these dedicated writers. Since I’ve received help and support through these venues, I try to use them to mentor other writers. I also belong to two local writers groups. I’ve worked to maintain networks in other areas as well. I’m a member of local, state, and national retired teachers groups, even serving the Ohio Retired Teachers Association as president and board member for seven years. I’m a Senior Active member of Xenia (OH) Rotary and have been an active Rotarian for almost 25 years. I’ve found all these networks provide me with avenues to market my work.

Desk description. I’m very fortunate here. My wife and I recently designed and built a new house, and within the plans, I was able to specify a spacious, comfortable office, complete with desk, chair, bookcase, wall space with bulletin board and trundle bed—for when I tire—all with an expansive window on one side. My working space is a large, L-shaped executive desk with more than twenty square feet of surface. If you’d pop in when I’m creating, you’d likely find the surface covered with my laptop, keyboard, 24-inch monitor, and Bluetooth speaker, as well as post-its, piles of notes, and lists of research details. Not much of the rich wood surface would be evident. Beside the desk sits my printer atop a small matching file cabinet and, of course, a tall bookcase. As I glance around, I remind myself how fortunate I am—and then I get back to work. Oh, and when I break for the day, I do tend to tidy up a bit, though I’m not the OCD freak like my hero of my novels, Darrell.

Outrageous talent or something fun like that. I don’t think this is an outrageous talent, and I’m not sure others would consider this fun, but here goes. I know many writers enjoy, prefer, and are happiest as hermits, just them and their computers, pecking away to make their stories come alive. While I like my alone time—and need hours of it to create—I also love being out among “the people.” I’m fortunate to be a comfortable—and pretty good—speaker, and I’ve had the privilege of giving more than 175 “author talks” to all kinds of groups and organizations, large and small, over the past several years. I love the challenge to hook the participants, and I thrive on the chance to engage everyone in the audience. Now that the pandemic is easing—we hope and pray—I have twenty more scheduled in the next few months, and I can’t wait to get back out there.

Window What’s outside yours? Since we were able to draw up the design for our new place, we placed the window in my office with a great view. When I glance up from my manuscript, I look out on a small pond filled with coy and beyond, a full stand of trees that edge the woods that surrounds our sub. This view is inspiring most days and explodes with riotous color during our Midwest autumn. During the Christmas season, the window becomes a display of our favorite holiday decorations. While I sometimes take solace in the tranquility of the view, I try not to let it draw me away too much from the reason I’m sitting there—to create my next masterpiece. Take a Peek Into Author Delsora Lowe's Window.

Picture Who My pen name is Delsora Lowe and I live in Maine near the coast. Regrettably no view of the ocean, but close enough (1/2 hour) that I can drive and enjoy the scent of the salty air, see the rugosa roses and the islands that dot the bay and coastline, and sometimes spot a seal or two.
Interests I love reading romance. I am partial to contemporary and historical, but I do enjoy digging into a suspense or a paranormal or any other genre of romance. Not only is reading my go-to-entertainment, but I learn from every book I read, and every author I meet. My other favorite “hobby” is cooking. I used to cater for a living and work in restaurants, before moving to event planning. Food creativity is a huge part of my life. Whether it was building a menu specific to a bride’s taste or for a corporate meeting, food is the uniter and essence of any gathering, big or small, family or work. I am one of those that never follows a recipe. By that I mean I collect tons of recipes, but I alter each one, before I ever try it in its original form. Sorry, I can’t help myself. I also invent recipes as I walk through a grocery store or a farmers market. I do take a list of essential ingredients when I shop, but I always end of with a myriad supply of items not on my list.
Network or Support system I have a home state Romance Writers chapter who are near and dear to me. And I belong to the national group, Romance Writers of America. I also belong to 4 state chapters, most of which are independent chapters. Each has a wonderful group of writers, who all have different talents and perspectives they are willing to share. We have lively monthly meetings and great programming. I belong to two goal motivating groups, one that checks in daily, one that checks in weekly, and I belong to a critique group. And now that life is moving to a new normal, I hope to touch base with all of these writers in person next year. Nothing like seeing old friends and getting real hugs, meeting new friends, and learning new skills to bring a smile to my face and a pep to my step. These are the groups of writers who inspire me and keep me motivated and on track.
Desk My kitchen table is my desk, even though I have a real desk set up in another room. My work space is extremely “messy,” even though I clean it off often. Despite looking messy to any outsider, I do know where everything is. I used to have a boss who got upset that I kept files on my desk instead of putting them away. Once I file something, it is forever lost to me. So, until I finish a project, the files lay stacked. Despite the small table, and the kitchen location, the reason I love the space is (1) it is within a few feet of the stove and my lifeline, the teapot, and (2) it does face the window to my back yard (see below for details.)
Outrageous talent I used to have a lot of talents. I loved crafting and taking classes (pottery, sewing, braiding rugs, jewelry making-basically anything adult ed offered.) I even taught cooking classes for adult ed. The kids grew and I spent more time chasing after their activities and then working crazy hours, so no time for fun and relaxing with crafting. But I would say the talent I used most in any job I had, was networking. I love people. I love to talk. So, networking and helping others network is a core part of who I am. I am now retired, but most of my work life was spent organizing events for schools and nonprofits. And that means a ton of networking, of pulling the right people together for an event or conference, making sure you have the right décor and setting, the right invite list of like-minded people who have a same goal or interest, building a list of reliable vendors, etc. And then at any function, networking includes listening, so you can introduce people with common interests. That skill has come in handy as a writer. Over the years, I have built a wonderful network of writer friends and been involved with writing organizations around the country. So, despite lonely hours spent writing and editing, I still love the networking, whether in person at a conference or on ZOOM.
Window My backyard has a huge oak tree that is framed in the center of my window. I can watch the baby squirrels chasing each other up the trunk, the variety of birds that peck the dirt for tasty bugs, and see my blooming daylilies. I live on a road that dead ends into an elementary school parking lot, so my view is of the playground. I can see kids playing basketball and hear the ring of the net when they make the shot. I can see the kids swinging and climbing the jungle gym. In the winter I see a sea of brightly colored jackets and hats as kids climb the snow mountains made by the plow clearing the playground. And I can hear the happy shouts and squeals of the children and the loud-speaker when they are called back to class. Although I live in town, I have seen fox and deer in the wee hours of the morning—not a normal occurrence. And once in a great while the “ladies” who lay eggs next door, escape their pen and wander through my yard to peck at the ground.

Did you say camping? I'm in. Actually, I'm out. Out camping that is.

Welcome to my campfire. After our month-long adventure through the southeast US, we spent July at home. But August rolled in, and we rolled out. Local for us. We visited one of our favorites nearby campgrounds the Pocono/Delaware Water Gap KOA koa.com/campgrounds/delaware-water-gap/
We had a great spot tucked in the trees on a good size site. I had a few projects and one of them was to hang my newly acquired "Owl" curtains. They needed to be shortened and then hemmed. I'm not a sewer but thank goodness for DH. He'd gone to the store to pick up some thread and a needle (I said I don't sew!) and returned with not only what I asked for but double-sided hemming tape. My hero!
One of the reasons we enjoy the Poconos are the many things to do. On Saturday morning we got up had a bit of breakfast then headed to Saylorsburg for the flea market blueridgefleamarket.com/
We wandered the lanes and checked out lots of things. I was searching for an owl lamp. Pete is always looking for antique Christmas items for his display. We didn't find anything so headed to Wind Gap indoor flea market www.facebook.com/windgapfleamarket/ Again didn't find any treasure but will be going back again in the fall. The market is undergoing some major renovations and we're excited to see the end result.
Lunch followed with a visit to Sorrenti www.sorrentifamilyestate.com/ for some brick oven pizza and Sangria then into the winery for a tasting and a few purchases.
The rest of the time was spent visiting with friends and the grands. They just returned from a camping trip to Tennessee.
We had been scheduled to go to Wisconsin a few days later but an unexpected expense arose. Last year if you remember, we had an axel fire. PSA GREASE THOSE BEARINGS CAMPERS! Well, it turns out the equipment the emergency repair shop installed was incorrect. Enough said we're pursuing action. However the cost of replacing everything sank out plans and with the cost of gas topping out again, we decided to stay close. Folks don't think you have to travel far. There are treasures in your own backyard. With one of our other favorite local camps filled, we tried a new to us one. Panther Lake Camping Resort pantherlakecampingresort.com/
was able to accommodate us. Despite the weather reports, we didn't have any rain until Sunday. Saturday we hiked the rails to trails. Afterward, I enjoyed cooking over the fire, and to our surprise just across the way from us one of Pete's fire department friends was camping. We spent a night around the campfire catching up. It did rain on Sunday, so we went to a few local antique shops and found a few things. Special shout out to Grey Barn Antiques and Collectables www.greybarnantiques.com/ It was there we not only talked fantasy books and dragons but found the makings of an owl lamp. (Pete's crafty like that) and a plaque. The rest of the day thanks to being a glamper, we watched a DVD the Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. Though it says it's for the whole family I caution about younger campers. It was a bit violent. We played cards and dominoes and still managed to get in a walk.
So my camping and non-camping friends, when you're looking for something to do check out what's available in your own backyard. You'd be surprised at the adventures waiting for you. Here's another PSA many campgrounds have cabins or campers you can rent that way you can get the experience first to see if the lifestyle is for you.

Go forth and make memories one campsite at a time and always remember all who wander are not lost.

A *New Release* Peek Through the Window

Picture Who you are: Hello everyone. My name is Peggy Jaeger and I writer romantic comedies, romantic suspense books and contemporary romances about strong women, the families who support them, and them who can’t live without them. I live in beautiful New England in a house in the wood with my hero hubby and a year old Chocolate Labrador named Maple. And I’m about to become a grandmother for the first time!!! My daughter is expecting her first baby sometime in late September.
Interests beside writing. Well, have you go an hour?? Hee hee. No, really. I love all things visual and creative. When I’m not writing or when I’m between books and trying to come up with a new idea I paint, I rehab and decoupage old steamer trunks, and sometimes I even knit.
Network or support system. I am a member of RWA and my local Chapter ( the sisters I never had, biologically). I belong to too many Facebook writing groups to name here – again, you’d need that hour to get through them all. In a former life I was  a registered nurse with a Master’s degree in Geriatric psychology. And the older my parents get, the more I am using what I learned while achieving that degree.
Desk description. In a world: Nuclear. I am one of those strange people who thrive in chaos and my desk exemplifies this. I refuse to show you a picture because you just might call HOARDERS and report me.
Outrageous talent. I can make the sound of a horse. Here, let me prove it. Watch this:
Window what’s outside yours? The beautiful woods where I live. I can watch the seasons change without anything blocking my view of the trees and forest. It is truly a gift to live here.

A Back Cover Peek
Lexi Buckley wants answers about her younger sister's death. The police have labeled it a suicide, but Lexi doesn't believe it. Stymied in her investigation, she doesn't know where to turn next. After a chance encounter with a private investigator, she thinks her prayers have been answered.
Aiden Keane has never been an answer to a prayer before, but he agrees to help Lexi. A quirky combo of brains and beauty, the pixie blonde makes him feel things no professional ever should for a client.
When their investigation puts Lexi's life in jeopardy, her safety becomes his number one priority. The hard part is not falling for her.

A Peek inside
Were you close with your sister?” Aiden asked.
Not the way we should have been. Not at the end.
“We had a sizable age difference between us. Almost ten years. I was the big sis. The oldest.” Her lips trembled when she pulled them into a sad line. Rolling her eyes she added, “The bossy one, according to her. She was the baby and took full advantage of her status from the moment she realized it.”
“And rightly so.” The corners of his eyes crinkled. “I’m the youngest of my brothers and I’ll can tell you with one hundred percent honesty, my oldest brother is the bossiest one of us. I think it comes with birth order. Although he takes his so called right uber-seriously. Especially at work.”
This time her grin was steadier.  “What kind of business do you all own together?”
“We a run a private security company.”
“Security?”
“Personal bodyguards, if a client needs protection from something. Background checks for employers. Mostly we do investigations.”
“What, like private eyes? Like on television?”
He laughed. “Nothing so glamorous. The fast cars and hot babes are all fantasy. It’s a lot of boring research, computer work, and surveillance, but yeah, you could say I’m a private eye.”
Lexi’s entire mood turned on his words. The sorrow flew, the hurt dissolved. Even her nervous trivia-speak went dormant. She sat bolt upright, her knees bumping against the tabletop when she shifted. Excitement shot from her system as she turned her body, placed a hand across his forearm and declared, “Oh, my God. You’re the answer to my prayers.”

Peggy Jaeger writes contemporary romances and rom coms about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them.
Family and food play huge roles in Peggy’s stories because she believes there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal…or two…or ten. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, Peggy brings all aspects of life into her stories: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness, and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after. Growing up the only child of divorced parents she longed for sisters, brothers and a family that vowed to stick together no matter what came their way. Through her books, she has created the families she wanted as that lonely child.

A Peek into Dee's Cornucopia by Jeny Heckman

Picture Dee’s Cornucopia
by
Jeny Heckman
Dee Walker Can Kick Your Ass
At least she thinks so and isn’t afraid to say it

A no-nonsense spark plug, Dee keeps everyone around her hopping. When she meets fellow field hand, Arthur Taylor, her colorful world becomes even brighter when she makes him an offer he can't turn down.

However, this story of a bright explosion of color in a monochromatic world isn't what you might imagine, as Dee's life doesn't exactly turn out like she thinks it will.

This novella is the life story of Dee Taylor, the feisty and eccentric grandmother of Finn in the Heaven & Earth series. Her bright colorful muumuus and big floppy hat are her trademarks, and this story will tell you how it all began. She also has this little ability to see future developments. Oh, and commune with the greatest Greek family in history, but she just doesn't know it... yet.

A Peek inside
“My God, it’s hotter than a billy goat’s ass in a pepper patch out there,” Dee announced as she entered the office furnished with the rich fragrance of leather, old wood, coffee, and tobacco smoke.
Her boss, Bert Norton, sat hunched at his desk, puffing on his ancient pipe. His gaze snapped to hers, and he gave the merest hint of a smile before frowning at her crass expression. The two fellows, also occupying the room, stood a little straighter at her appearance, but gave each other surreptitious glares. They wore identical uniforms of scarred leather boots, dusty work trousers and damp cotton shirts, right down to the sweat-stained field-hand hats squeezed together in their enormous fists.
“Ah, sorry?” Dee phrased it almost like a question and raised her eyebrows at all the testosterone in the small space.
“Deidre, please, take a seat.” Bert gestured to one of the broad wing-back chairs occupying the area in front of his desk.
The two imposing men shifted their weight from foot to foot in apparent agitation. If I sit in that chair, I’ll look weak. Possessing a vagina created enough of a disadvantage chasm already.
“Thanks, Mr. Norton, I’ll stand. No sense in giving anyone the upper hand, right?” she quipped and slapped her hands on her hips, shifting her own weight from side to side. The corner of her boss’s lips twitched, but he sighed, and they both looked over at the two workers.

A Peek Further
Furious, Demeter waved a hand to soften the noise of the door before it reached anyone’s ears and settled the house with her other hand. She gazed up at the bright light in the sky.
“You must deal with this blight, niece,” Themis’ voice echoed in her mind. “The last drop of blood is nigh upon us. This will be our last chance.”
Demeter’s face fell at the all-knowing Oracle. “She has been a loyal and faithful servant, perhaps…”
“Demeter, we have all risked and many more sacrifices are yet to come. Catherine is not Persephone. We must allow the mortals to gain their strength for no one is yet in place beside Deidre and even she will not be ready until her hair turns white and her skin wrinkles. Many years in their time. Time for us to prepared, for my father seeks revenge.”
Demeter understood what was not said. If they didn’t win this time, no hope remained. Picture
