The Great Thing about Sunshine

A while back I discussed some of the problems I was having writing continuing stories in the Sunshine Walkingstick Series. Today, I published a new post over on my personal blog discussing some of the things I love about playing in that story world and why I’ve decided to continue writing and sharing Sunny stories. Hop on over and join the discussion!

Happy Thanksgiving!

New Facebook Fan Group

There’s a new group for fans of my books over on Facebook. It’s a small group right now, which lends itself to a certain intimacy for discussions. So far, we’ve got discussions of cryptids, mountain ways, books of various kinds, and, of course, Sunshine. I’m trying to contribute some behind the scenes peeks as readers ask for them, such as Sunny’s recipes for fried taters and cornmeal gravy, the manner in which the man-sized catfish fight scene developed, and the economics behind publishing and author earnings. If readers ask, I try to provide an answer.

But I also love sharing stuff about the story world. Today, I’m going to post some things about the next book in the series. This is something you don’t want to miss, so head on over and join us. Due to the bad behavior of trolls on Facebook, I’ve implemented a screening system. It’s not hard, just three questions anyone who’s read the series should be able to answer. If you stumble over one, however, just say so. No worries. I’m not trying to screen out readers, only the trouble makers.

Mostly, though, this is a reader-led group, so I hope you’ll feel free to post questions and interact with other readers. Have fun!

Preorder Sunshine Walkingstick Omnibus One

I'm bundling the first three Sunshine Walkingstick books (Greenwood Cove, The Deep Wood, and Cemetery Hill)  into an omnibus/box set and publishing it in ebook, print, and audiobook formats.

The ebook edition will be exclusive to Amazon, so it will be available in the Kindle Unlimited subscription program, at least for a time. However, the introductory price for the omnibus is just $.99, so why not pick up a copy now?

The official publication date for the ebook is 11 October 2019, a little over a month from now. The print edition should be available by then, for anyone interested, and the audiobook shortly thereafter.

Keep an eye out for more news on this first omnibus.

Sleeping Gods

Sleeping Gods, a new Sunshine Walkingstick short story, is now available.

This was a surprise addition to my writing schedule. Just when I think I'm finished with Sunny for a while, she pops her head up and gives me another story.

Sleeping Gods takes place about a month after the end of Witch Hollow (Book 4) and is a bridge between that book and a potential fifth book. No promises! But it's something Sunny and I are discussing intermittently.

Sleeping Gods is just $.99 and can be purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and other retailers.

Have fun with this one!

Witch Hollow is here!

Witch Hollow, the fourth novel in the Sunshine Walkingstick Series, is finally here!

I'm so excited to bring this story to you, for a wide variety of reasons. First, it was requested by readers, which is truly a special gift to an author. There's nothing like knowing readers love a character and story world enough to want more.

Secondly, there's so much going on in Witch Hollow. I don't want to spoil the read for anyone, but we learn a lot about Missy and delve more into Riley and his family.

I personally feel that this is the best story in the series, and while it's the longest book by far (it beats out the next longest book, The Deep Wood, by around five thousand words), it reads very quickly. There's a ton of action and, better, a ton of emotion as Sunny has a few come-to-Jesus moments. My editor told me he teared up over the ending every time he read it, so that should tell you something.

Ok, enough blather. Go pick up a copy. Trust me. You're going to love Witch Hollow.

What Sunshine Walkingstick and the Cullowhee Witches Have in Common

Last week, I wrote a blog post discussing the story world shared between the Sunshine Walkingstick Series and the Cullowhee Witches Series, which was written under one of my other pen names, Lucy Varna. You can read the full post at Dreaming If, my blog. It’s an interesting read, if you’re at all a fan of either series, and explains where the story world originated.

A New Sunshine Walkingstick Book!

Yes, it's true. After all the things I said about not writing another Sunshine Walkingstick book, I have to eat my words: I just finished the first draft of Book 4, officially titled Witch Hollow.

Part of the impetus behind another Sunny book was readers (that's you). Without your encouragement, and I got a lot of encouragement from y'all, I don't think I could've finished this one.

But part of it was also Sunny. She poked at me and poked at me until I started putting words on paper. That was last May, right after I said I wouldn't be writing another novel in that series again.

I think she just wanted to get my goat, but that's Sunny for you.

I have to do a round of edits before I hand it off to my editor, then I should have a good idea of a release date. Right now, I'm aiming for sometime between late March and late April, but don't count on that; it could be later, depending on how long my editor needs for his part of the polishing. He's editing my stuff around writing his own stuff, managing his law practice, and caring for an aging father, so he may need a couple of weeks more. We'll see!

In the meantime, you may want to join my newsletter. Subscribers will be the first to know when a release date has been set and when Witch Hollow goes up for pre-order.

Many, many thanks to all of you for your continued support and encouragement.

The Problem with Sunshine

I just published a somewhat in-depth post on why I wrote Sunshine Walkingstick the way I did and whether or not the series will continue, over at my personal blog: The Problem with Sunshine. If you’re a fan of the series, hop over there and check it out.

Now Available: Dreaming of a Dark Christmas

If you’ve been following my personal blog over at DreamingIf, you’ve already heard about the surprise I’ve had cooking for a while: a collection of dark Christmas short stories written under each of my pen names. I’ve been planning this since August, and am so happy to present these stories to you now.

Dreaming of a Dark Christmas was designed around the dark holiday concept. The stories are, in this order:

“Christmas Eve Gift” by C.D. Watson. Old Bill sets out on her annual Christmas Eve journey to her niece’s house, and encounters an unexpected darkness along the way.

“A Dark Christmas” by V.R. Cumming. (A World of the Vampyr short story.) Alice, a dark daughter of the vampire Elizabet, turns the table on a family of hunters, with unexpected consequences.

“On the 7th Day of Christmas” by Celia Roman. (A Sunshine Walkingstick short story.) Sunny finally gets to throw a party with her friend David Eckstrom, only a monster shows up and twists a small kink into her New Year’s Eve festivities.

“Twelfth Night” by Lucy Varna. (A Daughters of the People short story.) A thirteen-year-old Lukas Alexiou encounters the Woman with No Face for the first time, and must decide between seizing his destiny, or allowing his father to control him forever.

For a limited time, the digital edition of Dreaming of a Dark Christmas is available for just $.99 at Amazon. Print and audio editions are forthcoming.

Happy holiday reading!
