Why we resist creativity when we need it most
We all know the story about how much we love creative ideas, and the success they can bring. But there is another story we don't tell. We don't talk about how our creative ideas are often rejected out of hand. Decision-makers don't talk about how uncertain they can feel when they face a mandate to choose a creative idea that will work. I wanted to tell this second story - why people resist creative ideas. I wanted to go into the psychology of why we expect experts to know the answers - and how this can make it harder for them to find value in the new. The problem, I have found, has to do (in part) with the mindsets we use when deciding which ideas to pursue. The solution is around switching our mindsets so we can better see value in the new, and pitching ideas in new ways to accommodate the maladaptive mindsets we encounter. If you read my book Creative Change - you will have a much better understanding of the psychology of change when creativity is needed, but also my best thinking around how to overcome our stubborn resistance. I hope you will join me in my quest to help others (and ourselves) make creative change. You can find more stories (and some personal ones about my own journey) on jennifersmueller.com.
