Why I Wrote To The Wild Horizon by Imogen Martin
My guest this week is Imogen Martin. Her second novel for Storm Publishing – To The Wild Horizon is published on 7 February 2024. Imogen is going to explain to blog readers why she wrote the novel.

Why I wrote To The Wild Horizon by Imogen Martin
Thank you, Morton, for inviting me onto your blog to talk about my second novel, To The Wild Horizon which will be published by Storm Publishing on Wednesday 7 February 2024.
When I was 19 – a little younger than my heroine, Grace – I worked in Maryland, US, for the summer. I then visited friends, travelling solo by Amtrac or Greyhound. I had friends dotted around North America because I had lived in the International Student House in London for six months (at the time I was neither international, nor a student, but that’s another story).
From Maryland, I travelled north to Chicago, north-west to Minneapolis, right across west to Victoria Island in Canada, sailed back to Seattle, then took the Pacific Coast Highway down to San Francisco. Finally, a three-day Greyhound journey from California to New York.

That’s a very long time sitting on a bus, talking To The sort of people who take the Greyhound (my US friends warned me that ‘regular’ Americans fly). Other times, I would sit by the window and stare out the extraordinary and huge landscape, letting stories wind themselves into my head. The stories have never left me; neither has my love for the American landscape.
The years went by and I got busy with work and having a family. Every so often, I would retreat to my bedroom and capture my ideas, scenes scribbled in pencil on narrow-lined paper. Eventually my daughters became adults and I had more time to shape the stories into something more like novels.
I love the bravery and confidence of the pioneers: to set off To The other side of the continent, not knowing what was ahead of them. This book is dedicated to my younger daughter Naomi who picked up the solo-backpacking gene. I had to get used to not hearing from her for weeks on end. Although one morning, when she was backpacking through Mexico, I did wake up to a text: “Hi Mum, just in case it’s on the news. There’s been an earthquake here. I’m fine.”
My heroine Grace and her brother Tom don’t face earthquakes, but they have a lot of other things thrown at them. I hope you’ll read my book, and find out why the hardest thing to find is love.
About Imogen Martin

Imogen writes sweeping, historical fiction. Her first two novels are set in nineteenth century America.
As a teenager, she took the Greyhound bus from San Francisco to New York. Over those three days of staring out of the window at the majestic mountains and endless flat plains, stories wound themselves into her head: tales of brooding, charismatic men captivated by independent women.
Since then, she has worked in a coffee-shop in Piccadilly, a famous bookstore, and a children’s home. She has run festivals, and turned a derelict housing block on one of the poorest estates in the UK into an award-winning arts centre.
During 2020 Imogen was selected by Kate Nash Literary Agency as one of their BookCamp mentees, a mentorship programme designed to accelerate the careers of promising new writers.
Married with two children, Imogen divides her time between Wales and Sardinia.

Discover More About The Broken Vow by Luisa A. Jones
This week I’m pleased to welcome Luisa A. Jones back to my blog. Her new novel for Storm Publishing The Broken Vow came out on 22 January 2024, the day before my own new release A New Arrival in Borteen Bay. Luisa is going to tell us more about the book and share an excerpt of The Broken Vow…

Hi Morton, and thank you very much for inviting me to contribute to your blog this week. Congratulations for the launch of your own novel A New Arrival in Borteen Bay last week. Having enjoyed other books set in Borteen Bay I’ve preordered it and I’m looking forward to reading it. (Ooo thank you – I do hope that you enjoy it Mx)
My latest historical novel, The Broken Vow, was published on 22nd January. It’s a sequel to The Gilded Cage, but its focus is very different and it can be read as a standalone story. The Gilded Cage is about Lady Rosamund Fitznorton, a woman seeking an escape from an abusive marriage. Set a few months later, after the outbreak of the First World War, The Broken Vow follows Rosamund’s stepdaughter Charlotte, who is desperate to marry in order to fulfil her late father’s dynastic ambitions. Marriage to a viscount’s son, Eustace Chadwycke, will bring the spoiled and self-centred young Charlotte into a higher social circle – but when she learns that Eustace is being sent home from the Western Front a broken man, it threatens all their plans.
In a society that values strength and sees distress in soldiers as cowardice, shell-shocked Eustace needs a safe place to recover from the traumas he has experienced in the trenches. If Charlotte can turn her childhood home into a hospital, she may be able to provide the sanctuary he needs. But the house has been shut up for several months. She’ll need to grow up fast by working hard for the first time in her life, and develop a more caring, selfless side to her nature. She’ll also have to learn how to master her short temper, and how to persuade others to help her when many around her believe women should leave decision-making to men.
In this passage, Charlotte is awaiting the arrival of Eustace and a small group of other shell-shocked officers from the front. At this time, “shell-shock” was a new term being used in the press to explain a sudden epidemic of symptoms being experienced by fighting men. The medical condition we would call PTSD today was not yet understood, and the gently-raised Charlotte has no idea what to expect.

“A distant rumble made her rush to the window, peering into the darkness. Yes, there it was – the unmistakable growl of the Wolseley, and a lighter, clattering noise that must be Doctor Sheridan’s car following behind. The crunch of wheels on gravel, like the sound of the sea on pebbles, told her they had arrived. Which car would Eustace be in? Would he be exhausted after his long, slow journey from France? She ran to the doorway, then paused and dashed to the mirror. Her face glowed with excitement, despite the tired smudges under her eyes after the strain of the past few days. She patted her hair, tucking some stray strands behind her ears, and took some deep, steadying breaths.
By the time she returned to the hall, the other staff and volunteers were assembling to greet their patients. All were wide-eyed and expectant, despite their fatigue. Catching Charlotte’s eye, Venetia nodded and gestured towards the front door.
“It’s only right that you should be the first to greet them, Charlotte. None of us would be here if not for you.” Pulling the heavy oak door open, she stood aside and with a grateful smile Charlotte moved past her into the covered stone porch.
The doctor’s car had drawn up behind the Wolseley, illuminating it in a glare of headlights that made Nurse Boyle shade her eyes with her hand. Its rear doors were already open, and Charlotte’s breath caught in her throat as she moved closer, unable to see past Cadwalader’s broad back as he waited to assist his passengers. Which car had Eustace travelled in? Did he even know yet that Plas Norton was his destination, or that his fiancée was there waiting for him?
The sight of the first patient emerging from the Wolseley made her blood run cold. He was dressed in a stained, crumpled uniform, and one arm was in a sling. But it wasn’t his dishevelled state that startled her. It was the way he walked – if the strange, jerking, shambling movements of his limbs could even be described as walking. With every shuffling step, his uninjured arm flung out, and his head twitched as if he had no control over it. It wasn’t Eustace, thank God. Surely Eustace wouldn’t look like that?
Nurse Boyle had taken hold of his good arm and was steering him towards the door, making slow progress given the almost drunken way he lurched along. Fleetingly, her gaze met Charlotte’s, burning into her as if to say: This is shell-shock. This is what you get when you bring them to your home.”

I hope this snippet has whetted your appetite to read about Charlotte’s journey of personal growth and resilience. I loved exploring her story and researching this turbulent era, when the impact of trauma was little understood, and women on the home front made an invaluable but often unacknowledged contribution to the war effort.
About The Broken Vow published on 22 January 2024:

Marriage was what Charlotte had been brought up to. After all, it provided a happy ending for all the heroines in the novels she sometimes read. So it would be for her… right?
Born into luxury, Charlotte Fitznorton has always known a life filled with lavish parties and a line of suitors, all part of a future neatly laid out for her by her father, Sir Lucien. She is to marry well and continue the line at Plas Norton, the family seat. When Eustace Chadwycke – son of a viscount – proposes just before leaving to fight in France, it seems Charlotte’s destiny is perfectly falling into place.
Then, tragedy strikes. Her father dies unexpectedly, and her future hangs in the balance – threatened by her hated stepmother Rosamund’s surprise pregnancy. News of Eustace, returning from the war broken by its horrors, leaves Charlotte fearing her engagement may be as fragile as her inheritance.
Determined to at least save her impending marriage, Charlotte pours her energy into turning Plas Norton into a healing place for Eustace and other war-weary soldiers. But small-minded townspeople, a bossy head nurse, and her newborn baby sister’s arrival push Charlotte to her limits.
Just as hope is slipping through her fingers, a mysterious stranger arrives at Plas Norton. This newcomer holds the power to upend everything Charlotte has fought to preserve. Will she have the strength to protect her legacy, or could this unexpected visitor awaken a desire in Charlotte for a different life altogether?
A beautiful and heartbreaking historical novel, if you loved anything by Fiona Valpy or Lucinda Riley, this book is for you.

A New Arrival In Borteen Bay Launch
My new novel, A New Arrival in Borteen Bay is out tomorrow (23 January 2024). This will be my seventh published novel for Choc Lit, now an imprint of Joffe Books and is available as an eBook or paperback. It is still something I have to pinch myself about, as I always dreamed about being a published author.
Having always loved reading books, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a novel on my bedside table and writing my own just felt a natural thing to do.
My first novel was actually written in my teens and even asked a schoolfriend to read it. I keep meaning to look it out to see if it still has some promise. I do know it had a dishy hero, tall ships and smugglers. I can remember a scene when the heroine is on the deck of the ship and the hero puts his coat around her to keep her warm.
I’ve asked myself lately whether I would have written anyway, or if the fact my parents took us to the library every week and read aloud to us daily made a difference. I like to think that the joy I find in words and stories was instilled in me by the habits of my parents. But does it go back even further than that?
After the passing of my mother in 2022, I have spent the last year typing up her memoirs. She talks about going on her scooter as a child to the library to get books for her gran. Her grandmother insisted that mom always read the last page before she brought a book home – gran only wanted stories that ended happily. Mom also talks about her father playing pieces on the piano and telling stories to go with the music of camels in the desert and ships on foreign seas.
So, is storytelling in my genes? I would love to know. In any case, it certainly sounds as if stories are in my heritage and on the days when writing, editing and promoting my books all seems a bit too much, I think I need to remember that and keep going.
I do hope that readers who invest in a copy of my latest novel A New Arrival in Borteen Bay enjoy the story. This one is a little different with an older couple, Buzz and Wynn and a younger couple, Skye and Adam, all four of whom have a point of view throughout the book.
This is a stand alone title, but if you have read other books from The Secrets of Borteen Bay series, you may recognise Buzz, who runs a crystal shop on Borteen high street and draws labyrinths on the beach, asking people to walk around the path in exchange for a donation to a homeless charity. He is one of those minor characters from another book that needed to have his own story. I do so hope that you enjoy it.

So, this week I thought I would do a shout out for the books due out soon by these writers. Please forgive me if I miss anyone though, but here goes:-

Kate Hewitt – The Last Stars in the Sky – Storm Publishing

From a million-copy bestselling author, comes an unforgettable and heartbreaking story about one woman’s determination to keep her family together when their world falls apart…
“Mom, why are you so mad at Dad?”
“I’m not,” I say, which isn’t exactly true. Putting on a brave face for my two young daughters—pretending everything is fine in my marriage—has been hard. That, and losing the house after Daniel lied to me.
I never expected to have to uproot my family to go live in my parents’ isolated cottage on Lost Lake. It’s twenty miles to the nearest town, an insignificant speck in endless pine forests. Nobody’s lived here for a decade.
Now, I pick up a rusty pail from its nest of autumn leaves and turn to my daughter. Suddenly, I recall how I used to help my own mother pick wild strawberries up here as a little girl. Maybe, this isn’t a punishment. Maybe this place will be the making of our family.
I’m still thinking it when my daughter rests her silky head on my shoulder that evening in the flickering firelight. And when, over a steaming cup of coffee at dawn, I watch a single loon cut a course through the mirrored surface of Lost Lake.
Later, I’ll hold on to these memories—ghostly shreds of another life. Because just eight hours after I sat on that sofa, feeling so hopeful, the world as I knew it—asanyone knew it—was gone for good.
What do you do when the worst thing in the world happens to your family? A gripping, beautiful story that will break your heart. For fans of Boo Walker,Where the Forest Meets the Starsand Julianne MacLean.

Happy New Year and Looking Forward to Publication Day
Happy New Year!
Where did the Christmas period go? I guess it didn’t help that hubbie and I came down with a virus part way through December and we are only just starting to feel right again. I had to cancel all of my pre-Christmas meet ups, which made me feel even more fed up.
And now the Christmas decorations are in the loft and my youngest son back at university, so I’m trying to get back into a routine.
My favourite Christmas present was a book containing a 60 Day course on Zentangle – a form of meditative doodling. I am really enjoying learning the patterns that make up these 40 cm square doodles. I promise not to share too many of these, but here are a few…

We spent New Year’s Eve watching some old films that made us both laugh – Notting Hill and Bridget Jones, whilst we waited for the inevitable fireworks and tried to head off the dog’s panic. We actually did rather well this year, imagine hubby and I adding to a full blast rendition of On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez to cover the bangs and you get the picture!
I have only made one new year’s resolution – to get out more lol. I appear to have become a bit of a hermit lately, even before being ill.
And, I have a new book out on 23 January 2024. A New Arrival in Borteen Bay is now up for pre-order on Amazon. Whoo hoo book 7!

The novel tells the story of four characters – Skye, Adam, Buzz and Wynn and has a fair smattering of characters readers will recognise from my other books in The Secrets of Borteen Bay series.
I thought I might give you a tiny taster today – this is the start of the book:-

You can pre-order A New Arrival in Borteen Bay published by Choc Lit an imprint of Joffe Books on 23 January 2024 here.

Next week I’m going to be sharing details of some of my friends’ novels out around the same time as mine
.

A New Arrival and Merry Christmas
My seventh novel is now up for pre-order on Amazon! Amazing that I never imagined I’d be able to say those words. A New Arrival in Borteen Bay published by Choc Lit an imprint of Joffe Books on 23 January 2024 tells the story of four characters – Skye, Adam, Buzz and Wynn and has a fair smattering of characters readers will recognise from my other books in The Secrets of Borteen Bay series.
And here is the lovely cover –

This is what the description says on Amazon –
FALL IN LOVE WITH AN UTTERLY IRRESISTIBLE, BRAND-NEW ROMANCE ABOUT FRESH BEGINNINGS AND LETTING GO OF THE PAST.
Skye knows it’s now or never. It’s time for her to reveal herself to the father she’s never met.
So she hops on a plane from Dublin to the English seaside town of Borteen.

Skye thinks they’re better off as friends, but Adam has other ideas. Even when she reveals a secret of her own.
Will Skye allow history to repeat itself? Or will she let go of the secrets of the past and open herself up to the future?
This uplifting and feel-good romance is perfect for fans of Beth Moran, Shari Low, Jessica Redland, Sue Moorcroft or Isabella Connor.
Just that last line, comparing me to other authors made me smile, as Sue Moorcroft’s books were the reason I started to write romantic novels in the first place.

I do hope that readers will enjoy this story of long lost family in Borteen Bay.
If you would like to pre-order the book will be out on 23 January 2024 and the link to buy is here.

This is such a lovely thing to be able to share in this my last blog post of the year. I would like to send everyone who has supported me, my blog and my books best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. May 2024 be kind to all of us!

The Twelve Days of Christmas by Georgia Hill
Georgia Hill returns to my blog this week with a Christmas theme to go with her new book – New Beginnings at Christmas Tree Cottage is published by Bloodhound Books. I have read and enjoyed the story and include my review at the end of the post. Over to Georgia …

Many thanks to Morton for hosting me yet again. This is something I revisit sometimes and, seeing as we’re well into the festive season run up, I thought it would be a fun one to update. You’ll quickly get the idea …
1. On the first day of Christmas, my true love asked of me: what was your best present? Memorable presents include a dolls house and a Making of Pride and Prejudice book (books always go down well with me). I’ve had lots of really lovely presents over the years but, if I’m honest, I’ve got to the stage in life where I don’t really need anything new. I’ve hinted heavily to the other half that I’d love a blow-up dinosaur this year but that’s falling on deaf ears! As I’m writing this, I’m waiting for a medical procedure so I’m going to be cheesy and say the best present I could receive is good health.
2. On the second day of Christmas, my true love asked of me: what was your worst present?
Ah – I’ve had lots of those too. A green plant holder in the shape of a dragon with a dead cactus in it is probably a candidate. Ditto a hamper which included steak and kidney pies. Reader, I’m an ex-veggie who doesn’t eat much meat and shudders at the very idea of kidney. But it’s the thought that counts. Remember to put on your grateful face!
3. On the third day of Christmas – oh I’m sure you get the idea by now – what was your best Christmas?
I’m like Honor in New Beginnings at Christmas Tree Cottage I think there’s just something truly magical about the season. I love it, wherever I celebrate it and whoever I’m with, so every Christmas is my best. Snow makes it extra-wonderful though.
4. On the fourth day … what was your worst?
Without going into details it involved a Christmas Day spent in hospital with a very poorly family member. That takes some beating, although there was one when I had to fight Bank Holiday traffic on the M5 not just once but four times.
5. On the fifth day … weirdest Christmas?
I’ve spent Christmas Day on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic and one in Siberia. Both weird but also wonderful in their way. No shortage of snow in Siberia! The huge ice sculptures in the park in Irkutsk were astonishing. Great snowball fights too. Oh – and the one without alcohol. I hardly drink but what’s Christmas without a cheeky Bailey’s?

6. On the sixth day … ideal Christmas?
I’m going to be cheesy again. This year my ideal Christmas would be one surrounded by my friends and family – with them all enjoying good health. It’s amazing how your priorities change with age.
7. On the seventh day … favourite thing about Christmas?
I love everything about Christmas! Food, the television specials, Christmassy pop music, hunkering down in front of the fire with a dog to cuddle and a good book, the smell of the tree, twinkling lights, the funny little Father Christmas figures my mum knits, finding that perfect present for the one you love. I adore unpacking the decorations and finding my favourites to put on the tree and I even like the short, dark days as you know the world has turned and spring is on its way. The Celts had Yule, the Romans their Saturnalia and Christianity nicked traditions and customs from both. We need good food, evergreens to decorate the house and a bit of fun in the depths of December. Bring it on!

8. On the eighth day … favourite carol?
I love In the Bleak Midwinter. It’s a quiet thoughtful carol, with beautiful poetry by Christina Rossetti, but belting out Once in David’s Royal City is hard to beat. I used to love Christmas in school when I was a primary school teacher. We held carol concerts in an enormous and very grand church and filled it to the rafters with song. Bit of a contrast to the village one I attended when the vicar chastised the (tiny) congregation for not singing up. Reader: it didn’t work, and we muttered into our hymn sheets, feeling even more self-conscious.
9. On the ninth day … favourite film?
No hesitation about this one – While You Were Sleeping. I watch it every Christmas, without fail. While I’m a real fan of a soppy Christmas B-movie (you know, where the big city heroine has to return to her hometown to save the family chocolate/biscuit/tinsel business and falls for the hunky boss/cop/fireman/Christmas tree grower) While You Were Sleeping, although dated, is sheer class. Top notch acting, brilliantly witty script, warm characters and Sandra Bullock and (especially) Bill Pullman being adorable.

10. Deep breath, nearly there … on the tenth day of Christmas my true love asked of me: what is your best cracker joke?
Apologies but here goes (this one always went down well with a class of five-year-olds). Q What do you call a donkey with only three legs? A Wonky!
11. On the eleventh day … Who would I like to find in my Christmas stocking?
Ooh, this took a bit of thinking about. The research was arduous, as you can imagine. There are quite a few I can think of … how about Gethin Jones, Colin Firth, Rob James Collier and Rupert Graves. New ones to add: Vito Coppola, Johnny Flynn, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Jago from New Beginnings at Christmas Tree Cottage. Do you think they’d all fit? Just as well I have extra-large stockings!

12. On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love asked of me: who would I like to entertain over the Christmas turkey?
If it’s not possible to have all those lovely men from the previous answer, I’d have Jane Austen, Dawn French, Miranda Hart, Eric Morecambe, Ray Mears and Rupert Everett. Oh, and Nigel Slater to do the cooking. What a party that would be.
Hope you found this fun and it’s got you thinking of your own answers. With warm seasonal wishes that your Christmas prep is going swimmingly and you’ve got the sprouts on. If you’re still deep in wrapping paper and Sellotape I suggest a large sherry and an even larger mince pie. Happy Christmas!

About Georgia Hill

Georgia Hill writes warm-hearted and up-lifting contemporary and dual narrative romances about love, the power and joy in being an eccentric oldie and finding yourself and your community. There’s always a dog. It’s usually a naughty spaniel of which, unfortunately, she has had much experience. She lives near the sea with her beloved dogs and husband (also beloved) and loves the books of Jane Austen, collecting elephants, and Strictly Come Dancing. She’s also a complete museum geek and finds inspiration for her books in the folklore and history of the many places in which she’s lived. She’s worked in the theatre, for a charity and as a teacher and educational consultant before finally acknowledging that making things up was what she really wanted to do. She’s been happily creating believable heroines, intriguing men, and page-turning stories ever since.

About New Beginnings at Christmas Tree Cottage

Christmas is the perfect time to fall in love. . .
The little English town of Lullbury Bay is a magical place to spend Christmas, and for Honor Martin it is the high point of her year.
However, newcomer Jago, doesn’t share her merry mood. After the devastating loss of his father he’d be happy to never hear another Christmas carol again.
But to help his little sister replace bad memories with good ones, he reluctantly joins in the festivities. As he gets to know her teacher, Honor, could she be the one to restore his love of Christmas?

A 5 Star Read
A great read that will have you thinking about Christmas and maybe buying Baileys!
I loved reading this book, which was a complete tonic in a stressful time for me. I always say that a book that can produce an emotional reaction is a good book and this one produced not one, not two, but three heart affecting scenes that had me thinking and reaching for the tissues. A cosy read, but with serious underlying themes of starting again after loss.
The characters are likeable and relatable, particularly Jago, trying to be the responsible son and brother, whilst nursing his own demons and heartaches, Honor, the primary school teacher with a big venerable heart and the amazing vicar, Verity, who is mad on ABBA. Merryn is a very wise little girl beyond her years. Georgia Hill weaves her story around community of Lullbury Bay, with each person living there having a distinct role and backstory. It sounds like somewhere I would enjoy living. I’d even take part in the yarn bombing brigade!
Highly recommended to get you in the mood for Christmas.

Why I Wrote The Christmas Season by Ally Sinclair
Glad to welcome back Ally Sinclair to my blog this week. She is going to tell us why she wrote her Christmas novel The Christmas Season, which is published by Hera Books. I always love a Christmas book, so over to Ally …

The Christmas Season is my fourth published Christmas story, and it’s been eight years since the last one. At that point I’d written the three Christmas Kisses (mybook.to/ChristmasKisses10) novellas, under my previous pen-name, in consecutive years and I honestly thought I’d said everything I could possibly say about love in the festive season.
So, what drew me back? Well the world of the Season was just too irresistible. It combines everything I love into one magnificently over the top, romantic bauble. There’s Christmas. There’s love in so many different forms. There are sexy bits. There is a hint of regency sparkle. And there are characters who grow and change and become better versions of themselves on their journey to find love.
And I poured all of that into The Christmas Season. Let’s break down those elements…
1. There’s Christmas.
There’s snowfall. There’s ice skating. There’s carol singing. There are kisses under mistletoe. Everything to make my little festive heart sing.
2. There’s love in different forms.
Love stories are absolutely for everybody. So The Christmas Season explores existing relationships that are faltering. Sibling rivalries and loyalties. Love after loss. Parent child relationships. Lots of lgbtq+ representation. And heaps and heaps of happy ever after.
3. There are sexy bits.
Sex is brilliant. And it’s part of love. Writers and readers sometimes debate whether you need to put sex on the page in romance stories. I’m very much in the camp that says if the sex is part of the story, you put it on the page and for one of the couples in The Christmas Season the sex is absolutely key to their story. It’s how they let their guards down. It’s how they become vulnerable. Ultimately it’s how they fall in love. So hurrah for the sexy bits!
4. There’s a hint of regency sparkle.
OK. I admit it. During the pandemic I might have watched too much Bridgerton. And I definitely watched Matthew Macfadyen striding moodily out of the mist in his Mr Darcy breeches more times than is healthy. It’s possible that I’ve become a little obsessed with the idea of the regency social season and the matchmaking that abounded within it. And my little writer brain caught onto the idea of creating the same sort of social season in the modern world. How would that work? That simple question kicked off both The Christmas Season and A Season for Love.
5. There are characters who grow and change and become better versions of themselves on their journey to find love.
And that, for me, is what happy ever after stories are all about. There not about being saved by Prince Charming. Or about somebody else fixing all life’s problems. They’re about self-love and learning to be open to love.
All these things are pretty much irresistible to me. My happy place is basically a Hallmark movie about an exhausted legal executive from the Big City finding love with a disturbingly hot smalltown Christmas tree farmer. This year I watched Red, White and Royal Blue three times in one week. I basically have no level of romantic sparkle that I consider too much. Especially as the nights grow darker and the wind gets chill, I want to be wrapped up in love and comfort and have my heart warmed. So that, in a nutshell, is why I wrote The Christmas Season.

About The Christmas Season

You are cordially invited to your Happy Ever After…
Emma Love is a matchmaker who believes in old fashioned courtship, over swiping left or right. She’s inspired by Jane Austen, Bridgerton and a thousand and one perfect romance stories, where matches were made at elegant soirees and not by sliding into your intended’s DMs.
This year, Emma is inviting you to a very special social season, where a hopeful singleton might find their own Mr Darcy waiting under the mistletoe. At a series of glamorous, festive, and, most importantly, romantic events, Emma is making it her mission to find love for everyone this Christmas Season.
How will she fare trying to find perfect matches for the Price twins, both too busy trying to outdo the other to ever look for love? Can she encourage the sexy Season rake, Theo, to change his ways? And what of Hope Lucas, who Emma has failed to match before, but who still has faith that Mr Right is out there?
And with Emma so focused on finding everybody else’s happy ever after, is she at risk of letting her own perfect match slip away?
Welcome to the Christmas Season.

Did Anyone Notice?
For years now I have almost religiously blogged each Monday first thing in the morning. I do have a lot of guest authors on my blog so I feel I owe it to my visitors to be consistent, but this week I lapsed and here I am blogging on a Wednesday!

It so happened that this week I had reserved a slot for myself to blog and the time I should have been posting coincided with an intense period of publisher edits for my new book out shortly. I don’t have an actual date as yet or even a completely confirmed title, but it is exciting to be publishing my seventh book in The Secrets of Borteen Bay series seven years after the first book The Girl on the Beach was signed.

November is also the month that I normally complete the annual NaNoWriMo challenge to write 50,000 words in November. I had completed 34,441 words and was on track to achieve the challenge when my edits arrived and I had to abandon the project. Still, I have a good portion of the book written and know where the story is going so all is not lost and I can now carry on writing it.
Earlier in November, I went on a writing retreat in Wales with members of the RNA Cariad group. This was great fun, the house we stayed in was amazing, we ate far too much, but I wrote many words. All in all, a lovely time.

My cousin emailed me this week to say she had spotted one of my books Christmas at the Little Beach Café in a library Christmas book display at Ecclesall library in Sheffield. It is always a thrill to see my books out in the world

It’s at this time of year that I often find myself transported back to the days when I worked in the training and development department of Midlands Electricity. We kept a quote book to record things of note that people in the office said. A colleague was made fun of for making an excuse on the telephone for not having got something ready in time. He was immortalised in the quote book for saying – “What with December being such a short month and Christmas coming early.” It’s strange how these days it actually feels like that and I think he was very wise. It feels as if Christmas is bearing down on me at a rapid rate and I’m not ready yet, lol.
Having said that, I have made my Christmas gonk, a pig in a blanket and a snowman is underway. I often think that crochet keeps me sane.

I still have Ali Sinclair and Georgia Hill on my blog this year. You can look forward to their posts shortly and I am hoping I can share a cover, title and release date for my new book very soon.
Until next Monday …
Thank you for visiting Morton S. Gray’s blog. For those of you who haven’t yet read any of my books yet, the good news is that all of the six published titles are currently only 99p as eBooks or available free on Kindle Unlimited.
I also hope to have news of a new addition to The Secrets of Borteen Bay series shortly.

The Inspiration For My Bomber Command Novels by Vicki Beeby
My guest this week is Vicki Beeby, author of some wonderful books set in World War Two, the latest being The Girls of Bomber Command which was published by Canelo on 9 November 2023. Vicki is going to tell readers about the inspiration behind her Bomber Command series and in particular her character Pearl …

It’s lovely to be back on your blog, Morton. Thank you for inviting me!
A question writers commonly get asked is where we get our ideas from, so I thought I would describe the thought processes that gradually turned into my first book about Bomber Command WAAFs.
I’ve long wanted to write a book based around a heroine who is a radio telephone operator in the WAAF, thanks to the film A Matter of Life and Death. The opening scene of the film features a bomber pilot whose plane is on fire, his crew being either dead or bailed out. Although he doesn’t have a working parachute, he’s decided to jump to escape the fire. Before he jumps he sends out a radio message which is answered by June, a USAAF radio telephone operator, and they talk, both thinking he’s about to die. It’s a heart-breaking scene, which has stayed with me for years.
When I was researching the WAAF for The Ops Room Girls, I read a memoir, Keeping Watch by Pip Beck, who recounts her years as a radio telephone operator in Bomber Command. The passages that described her role reminded me of June in A Matter of Life and Death, and so I made notes of a few story ideas to return to once I’d finished The Ops Room Girls. What I didn’t have at that time was the right character to drive the story forward, and as it turned out, I wrote five other books before starting my Bomber Command series, so you can see how long I have to mull over some ideas before turning them into books!

When I was coming to the end of my Wrens series, I starting to think about characters for a new series, and Pearl Cooper appeared fairly early on. As I jotted down some ideas it occurred to me that Pearl was a little older than my other heroines (28 at the start of The Girls of Bomber Command) and was over-protective of her younger sister as a result of losing both parents at a very young age.
Planning a story is all about asking a series of ‘what if’ questions, and the first question that occurred to me with Pearl was: ‘What if this over-protective character ends up on a Bomber Command station with a high casualty rate?’ That premise sparked loads of ideas, and I knew I had finally found the right character to be my Bomber Command R/T operator. Most of Pearl’s story arc stems from that question, and I have to admit I had fun torturing poor Pearl by putting her loved-ones through the wringer and forcing her to confront her shortcomings.
All this is a very long-winded way of saying that while I usually have lots of ideas simmering in the back of my mind, I need a character who’s right for a particular idea before I can flesh out a story. So as long as I can keep on thinking up characters that inspire me, I’m going to carry on writing their stories!

About The Girls of Bomber Command

With an enemy in their midst, can they still protect their fighters in the skies?
Pearl has given up on her dreams of being a journalist after being denied a promotion because of her gender. Joining the WAAF as a radio telephone operator for Bomber Command, Pearl’s new job at RAF Fenthorpe serves two purposes – providing an income for her grandmother, and keeping a close eye on her younger sister, Thea, an instrument repairer at another Lincolnshire bomber station.
Pearl befriends Met WAAF Jenny as well as Australian pilot Greg, who she guides home safely during an emergency. Pearl’s journalism background doesn’t go to waste, however – a series of thefts from pilots rekindles her investigative fire and she is soon caught up in the mystery.
But when all signs point to the perpetrator being her sister, she finds herself up against the clock to prove her sister’s innocence…
A captivating and heartwarming WWII saga for fans of Daisy Styles and Johanna Bell.

Morton’s Review of The Girls of Bomber Command by Vicki Beeby publication date 9 November 2023 – Five Stars
Vicki Beeby has done it again!
I enjoyed her last two WW2 series about The Ops Room Girls and The Wrens, but I loved the first in this new series about The Girls of Bomber Command.
A poignant subject, Beeby comments in her notes that the RAF Bomber Command had one of the highest casualty rates of any Allied unit during the Second World War and yet the author manages to portray this sensitively in a very enthralling read.
I loved Pearl, who reminded me of myself as she tries to look after her younger sister and strives to find her own place in the world whilst staying true to her aspirations. Greg has to deal daily with the thought that he might not survive the next bombing mission and that colours how he lives his life.
The author’s notes on the research undertaken to inspire and also to make this story authentic were fascinating.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Thank you for visiting Morton S. Gray’s blog. For those of you who haven’t yet read any of my books yet, the good news is that all of the six published titles are currently only 99p as eBooks or available free on Kindle Unlimited.
